Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

Hey people, what's up?

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

What's the deal with Irsay pretending they might not draft Andrew Luck? Does this make any sense to you?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:01 PM)

No. But you play the game, I guess.

Tim (Houston)

Is Schaub expected to be on the field opening day for houston? And if he is, is it the type of injury where it takes a while to fully recover, or is he still going to be the qb he was before he was injured last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:02 PM)

He's expected back, and if he's out there at the start it's because he's at 100 percent or very close.

Wade (Houston)

Lets say you were running the show in the FO of the Texans. With the salary cap issues and the vast number of unrestricted free agents the Texans had this year, would you have done anything differently than they have up to this point? If so, why?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:03 PM)

I would have worked to keep Winston. But I am not sure how exactly. Would rather have him and do a restock at wide receiver beyond Andre, perhaps. Go further back and extend Mario Williams a year ago?

Sean (Tally)

Any chance the Jags can trade back. I personally like Michael Floyd at 7 but im sure the "experts" would say it was reach.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:04 PM)

They would. And it might be. I don't know who's coming up for what.

Curt (Houston)

So apparently Wade Phillips defense's historically see a rather steep dropoff after strong performances his first year. Is that probably a coincidence or is it a legitimate worry that the Texans defense won't be nearly as strong as it was last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:06 PM)

Regression to the mean is a concern, for sure.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

You mentioned that this would be the last year that free agency would have any big name players worth going after. Was that due to the belief that the cap would go way up? Now that we know for the next couple years that the cap will basically stay where it's at, does that change things?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:07 PM)

You raise a good point. Partially based on that. But also, next year or the year after, teams have to spend to almost the full cap, by rule. If you have to spend, odds are you spend on your own guys.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

If the Jags stay at 7 and neither Blackmon or Clairborne fall, what player or players might the Jags select?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:07 PM)

Melvin Ingram.

Dennis (New jersey)

Even though they should have added more receivers. I think the jags did a good job in free agency. Especially by resigning their own. The receiver market was way over priced

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:08 PM)

They have a boatload of money. I'm sorry, signing your own is great, and they needed to keep Dwight Lowery for sure, and Jeremy Mincey, to a lesser degree. Then go get more.

Colin (Indy)

Where do you think Indy will find its 3-4 NT? I haven't heard that they've had any interest in the current FAs, though that doesn't mean anything.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:08 PM)

I presume they will draft one.

Sharp (Naptown)

Over Under on the Colts making a move in the Draft to try and grab Coby Fleener to play with Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:10 PM)

Don't know how to set an over-under on a yes-no question. They can't make a move, they can't give up picks with all the needs they have, I don't think.

Matt (Lincoln)

What is the biggest need for the Titans in this years draft

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:10 PM)

Still defensive end, I think.

Jason (Los Angeles)

How do you see Wimbley performing next season? Do you think he benefits defense dramatically or at all?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:10 PM)

I think he's better than anyone they had last year.

Eli ( My Cube)

Paul, Jax is on the clock, Claiborne and Tannehill are there, Browns are calling to get ahead of Miami to take Tannehill, you trade or draft Claiborne?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:11 PM)

Trade. Or take Ingram. The Aaron Ross signing reduces likelihood of a corner to me.

Wade (Houston)

Do you think the Texans could get away with drafting Fleener in the first with the pressing need at #2 reciever?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:12 PM)

I doubt Fleener is going 20th. And the Titans feel pretty good about Jared Cook and Craig Stevens as their top two.

Todd Smith (Coltsland)

With Fleener likely off the board at 34, Tamme and Clark gone and only Eldridge left what are the Colts options at TE? Luck loves to throw to his tight ends so I can't see the cupboard remaining this thin.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:13 PM)

Draft pick(s) later.

Bo (NC)

Do the Colts want Wheeler back? He is to good to let him walk away

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:13 PM)

Huh? He failed to hold a starting job how many different times? I don't think they are trying to keep him.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Do you know if the parameters of the Samuel trade are what have been reported--a single, third round pick?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:14 PM)

I don't think there is a Samuel trade.

Ryan (Jacksonville Beach)

Do you believe that Gene Smith drafts need over BAP?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:15 PM)

Historically or now? Look, everyone says he is best player available. But how often do you see a team with great starting tackles use their first rounder on a great tackle, etc.? (That's an example. I'm not saying the Jaguars are set at tackle. Obviously there are question marks beyond Monroe,)

Daniel (Office)

With a fairly deep class do the Titans target a CB early in the draft or continue to feel out the market for veterans? Samuel doesn't seem worth a 3rd.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:15 PM)

They'll take a corner. I don't know that he will be early. I don't think he has to be early. They are OK at corner.

Benny Mac(with cheese) (Texas)

I've seen that the Texans are going to be hit with $750k from Ryans' contract this year. But did the Texans ultimately save money by not having to pay his contract for next year? Thanks in advance.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:16 PM)

They save a ton of cash. The $750,000 is cap money, that's already been paid. They then save big base salaries over the next two or three years. Significant savings.

steve (bloomington)

Why has there been so little interest in Dallas Clark? In what is being called a poor draft for TEs, I would have thought that someone with his resume would have been snapped up at the start of free agency. Are there concerns about his injuries? or is he viewed as a product of Manning at QB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:17 PM)

I think there are definitely questions about his health.

Mike (Charleston)

in the RTC it says Ross and Mathis will be battling for the starting sopt opposite Cox. what happens to the guy that losses out with Cox being the #2 and Drew Coleman playing Nickle?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:18 PM)

Great question. May challenge Coleman. May be depth. May be cut if it's Mathis.

Andy (Texas)

Paul, We know that the Texans will not receive a compensatory pick for Mario Williams until the 2013 draft. Does resigning your own teams FA's count in the formula that determines what pick(s) you get? Basically does resigning Foster and Meyers affect what kind of pick they will receive next year? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:18 PM)

It's about losses vs. gains. Re-signing your own guys doesn't amount to gaining.

Dan (South Dakota)

Out of all the moves the Colts have made thus far, whether it's keeping someone in house or going after free agents, which one do you like the best?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:19 PM)

Keeping Robert Mathis, I think.

Ryan (Houston)

Most everyone who is doing a mock draft sees Houston taking Kendall Wright with the 26th pick. Personally, I see this as a poor pick for Houston. I think Wright will be an solid slot receiver in the league, but I do not think that is what Houston needs in the receiver they pick. I think the receiver needs to be a big, physical receiver to line up opposite of Andre who has the potential skill set to do things that only Dre can currently do in the instance Dre goes down (red zone, catch in traffic, etc). What are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:20 PM)

It's easy to say go get another Andre Johnson. He was the third pick, not the 26th. But maybe Reuben Randle is a better option for them.

josh (jax, fl)

Would you rather draft Jeffery or Hill?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:21 PM)

I don't know a lot about Hill, but I presume he can separate better than Jeffrey -- who a lot of people say cannot separate.

Peyton Manning (Denver)

Pete Kuharsky, I'm going to miss you dearly. Need a favor. Will you please introduce me to Bob (yes, Bob) Williamson of the AFC West? He ignores me. He and I haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:21 PM)

You kids will get along just fine.

Rob (Kentucky)

I know this doesnt pertain to the AFC South but where does the money go that the Saints coach and GM or who that got suspended would have gotten paid.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:22 PM)

I presume the owner keeps it. But maybe the league collects it and it goes to charities like fine money.

Swanson (Nashville)

Can you see the Titans going into the season with Campbell, Mouton and Hawkins as the reserve CB's?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:23 PM)

Yes. I have said all along it's possible it's those three plus a middle-round pick.

Steve (Chicago)

Outwardly Munchak, Reinfeldt and the entire Titans organization is going to have positive things to say about Locker. Behind closed doors do you think they believe they have something special?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:23 PM)

I do.

Louie (Nashville)

Jury is still out, but Munch seems legit. Any reason he didn't get more sniffs from other teams before Fisher left unexpectedly?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:24 PM)

He was a position coach and most hires are coordinators. He wasn't necessarily looking to climb the ladder and leave Nashville.

Parddy34 (West Springfield,Ma)

Any chance the Titans draft Konz at #20?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:24 PM)

People in the know I know say it's too high.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

Its rumored that Denver is getting the Sunday Night Opener at home vs a non-divisional opponent... Which is better game: Steelers @ Broncos or Texans @ Broncos. . . .

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:25 PM)

Steelers give you the playoff game rematch extra angle.

Andrew (Houston)

I understand the want for a WR first round for the Texans, but is a late first round pick worth it for a WR? Seems risky, wouldn't it be better spent on OLine or defense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:26 PM)

Depends on which receiver, which offensive lineman and which defender is there.

Robbie (JAX)

Lee Evans visited JAX and let without a deal. Wallace would cos thte Jags their #1 and more. Mike Thomas and Laurent Robinson are OK. Marcedes can't possibly worse than he was in 2011. Jennings brings back a true pass receiving RB. Does it matter what WRs are brought in if the OL doesn't step up?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:27 PM)

If there are good receivers, the QB doesn't have to hold the ball as long as often. Of course it matters.

Jason (Los Angeles)

Any chance the Titans achieve the same success in the draft as last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:28 PM)

Awfully hard to match that immediate production. And there shouldn't be the same amount of opportunities to get on the field.

Jason (Bmore)

Are the Titans high on Tommie Campbell, enough that he eventually becomes a starter?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:28 PM)

They like him, yes.

Bryan (Houston)

Hello Paul, I know you are more of a realist than i am so shut me down or give me light with this one. With so much people saying the texans are drafting a WR in the first round, why not go for Mike Wallace? The Steelers probably wont be able to match what the Texans can offer. What say you about this?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:29 PM)

Can't match what the Texans can offer? What can they offer? They have no money. They had to cut Eric Winston to get under the cap. Wallace wants a lot, too.

Joey (San Antonio)

Has the big list of departed players from Houston (and the lack of incoming players) affected the balance of power in the AFC South at all as of yet?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:30 PM)

Helps close the gap some. But a good draft and a healthy starting QB should mean they are the favorite again.

Johnny (Orlando)

You say the Jaguars have great tackles? Who are they other than Monroe??

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:31 PM)

I didn't say they do. I was using the position as an example. And Gene has spent a first and a second on OTs. I don't see an OT worth seven that they'd take. Eben Britton still has a chance to be good.

Cory (Dayton, OH)

The Colts got rid of their marquee players to save cap space, but how much of a cap hit does it hurt them this season? Do they only take the hit this season or are they still affected by it until the original player's contract would have been up?Basically, should Colts' fans (like myself) be expecting one season of cheap talent or many?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:32 PM)

They are taking on a ton of dead money this year in order to be back to a normal situation next season.

Jason (Los Angeles)

Do you think Jags overpaid for Robinson? By a lot? I mean, like a lot?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:32 PM)

Have to overpay for people in free agency. I would have had a bigger complaint if they got no one.

Wesley (Nashville)

Who young player on the Titans D do you see making the biggest jump: Morgan, Casey, Klug, Ayers, Mccarthy, Verner?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:34 PM)

Well, I think Casey, Klug and McCarthy are already pretty good at what they do. I expect improvement, but would be OK if they stay the same. I expect Derrick Morgan and Akeem Ayers to make jumps.

zoo (indy)

What can the Colts add at receiver & rb to take pressure off the new qb?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:34 PM)

Draft picks.

Kevin Cunningahm (Portland, OR)

I read an article making the case that the Texans cuts this year are more palatable due to the weak division, and the fact that they have big extensions coming due soon (Brown, Barwin, Cushing, Schaub, et al.). Is this the approach you think is best, or would you have gone "all-in" for this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:36 PM)

You can't go all-in for this year if it means losing those guys later. Besides, what could they have done to be all-in given their financial difficulties?

Will (Poth, TX)

Would it be smart if the Texans went after Hightower instead of a WR because the WR is so deep? If not would they need to go after Kendricks from Cal later in the draft or someone else to replace Ryans? Thank you.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:36 PM)

Daryl Sharpton will replace DeMeco Ryans. They need to replace Sharpton.

Bryan (Houston)

Are the texans as bad as people saying aroung here in Houston after all the cuts? I keep reiterating that those players were key but we still have players that can do the job. Do you think they will have similar success by taking the AFC South crown?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:39 PM)

Mailbag: A frustrated Texans' fan

Wade (Houston)

Do you think Arian Foster is the best back in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:40 PM)

I do. Part of it is from him being on the better team. But he's so well rounded. Maurice Jones-Drew is great, too, of course.

Mike (Brunswick)

If circumstances put Locker, Luck, Yates, and Gabbert all starting for the AFC South for Week 1, which team would have the upper hand (and I mean upperhand based on QB not the rest of the roster).

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:41 PM)

Well, some degree of experience helps the other three. But I'd take Andrew Luck.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

I know you have Ingram going to the Jags based on what you believe Gene Smith would take. Who would you take personally and why?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:45 PM)

I think I'd probably take Ingram. They are a premier pass rusher away from being an excellent defense. Sounds like he has a chance to be one.

MANNY (BROOKLYN NY)

WHO DO YOU SEE THE COLTS TARGETING FOR THEIR SECOND ROUND PICK?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:45 PM)

I can't pretend to know. And please don't shout.

Will (Poth, TX)

Do you think the Texans really do need to go WR first round or go with some other positions first?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:46 PM)

I think they have the luxury of taking just about anything that jumps out at them.

Jason (Los Angeles)

It seems like a lot of people have written off CJ because of one mediocre year (see above question and response). No chance of a comeback?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:46 PM)

Definitely a chance at a comeback. He can't be happy with what people say to him when they see him now.

Mike (St. Augustine)

How can you be critical of the jags deciding not to grossly overpay free agent receivers or DEs just because everyone else is doing it? That doesn't seem like good business.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:47 PM)

I didn't say to grossly overpay. But go get involved in he chase.

Mike (Not Sure)

How many hours a week do you put in this gig Paul? Or does it just depend...

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:49 PM)

Who's counting, really? Depends on time of year, what's going on.

Vince Young (My steakhouse)

I don't have a new job yet. Will I have one when training camp starts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:50 PM)

Probably. People are desperate.

Greg Brady (The 70's)

"Something suddenly came up." You know I know what that really means.

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:50 PM)

It's an excuse for Marsha Brady to get out of a date.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

With every TD & Turnovers being reviewed now, shouldn't the NFL just go all out and make every play reviewable, and elminate challenges ? I know it sounds ridiculous, but so many other things can factor into the final result including penalties

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:51 PM)

Would simply slow a game down too much.

Bud Adams (On a Plane to Denver)

Should I still give Peyton a job for life once he's done leading the Broncos to the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:54 PM)

No need to decide now.

Johnny (Orlando)

If Alshon Jeffery is there in the 2nd round do the Jaguars take him? Would he be a good fit with Thomas, Robinson and Lewis?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:55 PM)

Did they take a wide receiver in the first? Do they think Jeffrey can separate?

Jason (Los Angeles)

I've seen a lot of mocks (for all they're worth) that have DeCastro falling to mid to late round status. Do you think he's available at 20 and if so, do the Titans pull the trigger?

Paul Kuharsky
 (4:58 PM)

I don't think he's there. I think he'd have to be tempting if he was. Also depends on who else is on the board.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

What are you reading in your leisure time?

Paul Kuharsky
 (5:00 PM)

I'll be picking something off my stack next week, when there will not be a chat because I might be on vacation.

Jack White (Nashville)

Thats it everyone!! Great chat!

Paul Kuharsky
 (5:00 PM)

Thanks Jack. Thanks everyone.
