Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. The big notebook is up, two video blogs are up, some blogs (including my Tyson interview) and some news stories. So check it out and we can discuss it all on what is a pretty light fight weekend other than Kelly Pavlik's comeback and a good ESPN2 main event tonight between Dannie Williams and Hank Lundy. So let's get to it.

Bobby (Louisville)

Next for Andre Ward? Hopefully not Anthony Dirrell..please

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

He is a mandatory and it is due so I do think that is a possibility.

Sam (London)

Is Gale Von Hoy the worst judge since the OJ SImpson trial?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! call me crazy, but wouldn't you still like to see a PAVLIK-ABRAHAM fight, seems viable for that June 9 undercard. Likely would be a good fight..

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I wouldnt necessarily mind seeing it but there is zero chance of it being on that card.

Carnell (DC)

Does Molina get the Paul Williams fight now that Kirkland is on the shelf with the surgery?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

He should but he probably won't.

Radu (Romania) [via mobile]

Pirog - Geale and Trout - Dzindzriuk?!?!? OH MY GAAAAAWD!!!!!! That's 3 of my favourite fighters right there!!! I am extatic!!! This makes PERFECT sense for everybody involved AND fulfills HBO's promise to Dzindziriuk!! And provides an opponent for Martinez. And is just good matchmaking. WAR Artie Pelulo!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Well said. And Gary Shaw too.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Dan did u watch Kimbo Slice fight? I heard his Ko would make Likar Ramos very proud.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I saw it on youtube. Ramos still wins the Academy Award but Kimbo's opponent deserves a nomination.

Nick (Rialto, CA)

Hey Dan, good main event for FNF tonite, who you got Lundy or Williams?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I kind lean to Lundy but it should be a nice fight.

Gary (Ft. Wayne, IN)

changing the result of the Molina-Kirkland bout to a NC is interesting. do you think that would be a fair solution?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

1000000000000% yes.

Jesse James (Warren, Ohio)

Assuming Pavlik Wins Big this weekend. name a few boxers you would like to see him face in his 2nd fight in June.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

No because if he fights in June it will be another lesser sort of fight.

Duff (Boston, MA)

The WBO had it right the first time when they weren't going to sanction the Cleverly-Krasniqi fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

But then they did their usual fraud nonsense and sanctioned it.

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, what ever happend with the whole James Kirkland pee test?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

He filled the second vile after the fight.

rocco (pa)

happy firday danimal! so whats the news with chavez jr.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Supposed to go June 16 on HBO, maybe vs Andy Lee or Vanes Martirosyan. But, according to Billy Keane, Chavez's manager, Top Rank is insisting Chavez sign a contract extension as part of the deal and they rightfully are refusing since they say they still have 16 months left on the deal. Why should Chavez sign an extension if he doesnt want to yet? Anyway, I assume it will be resolved and he'll fight on June 16. But anyone who tells you a Sept. 15 fight with Sergio Martinez is done is full of it, despite some poor reporting around the Web.

Carnell (DC)

Does Gamboa fight again this year or will the legal disputes keep him on the shelf? Would Broner be a logical opponent since Gamboa was planning to move up in weight

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Gamboa is simply on ice right now until this legal thing plays out. Could be short if they make a settlement of some kind or could drag on. No way to tell right now. Forget the Broner fight. That's a TR/GB thing and wont happen any time soon, especially with Gamboa's situation so unsettled.

GUS JOHNSON (PR)

NUTS AND GUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Naturally.

Duff (Boston, MA)

What are your thoughts about Latimore-Quintana on the May 5 PPV? I'd much rather see that the night before on FNF.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

The fight does very little for me. Not impressed.

Jon (Ottawa)

I have a work assignment due in an hour, but I think I should let it marinate for a while. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Go for it.

Slater (West By God Virginia )

Very excited at the annoucment of title unification of Pirog, and Geale. Do you think theres any chance the winner will fight Chavez Jr, Sturm, or even Sergio Martinez? I definetly think it would be good for boxing to have a undisputed champ.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Make no mistake -- Martines is THE champ, belts or no belts. That said, having a fight like Geale-Pirog on HBO is great because it will raise the profiles of both guys and help create a possible opponent for Martinez while also giving fans a good, competitive fight.

Gale Van Hoy (Deep in the heart of Texas)

I had Shane Mosley beating Mayweather 117-111.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Why so close?

Chris (Indianapolis,IN)

What are the chances of a Brook, Khan fight in the near future. I know Amir wants to move up and it would seem like huge money across the pond.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I think unlikely for now. Khan has his eyes on much bigger fights, not a domestic fight. Brook is going to have to do a lot more than beat up Matthew Hatton to get into that level fight.

Sam (Santa Monica)

Do you think that the WBC enforces the Olesegun mandatory? He can give Garcia a lot of trouble and I can see his team (Al Haymon) trying to avoid fighting him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

The wretched WBC makes stuff up as it goes along so I have no idea if they will follow their rules. If the fight does happen, Garcia will be a very tough fight.

John (Austin)

I hate it that Texas is getting a bad rep for the recent troubles. We've got some great boxing fans and thousands of freaks down here!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

The fans are great. The regulation and officiating is terrible.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

I am pleased to announce that Gale Van Hoy is the new official WBC silver champion of judging...in return for a small sanctioning fee.

Wade (ATL)

So dan, how is the new madonna album treating you? Is it still as good as the first listen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I'm enjoying it and looking forward to the September concert I have tix for.

Mike (Chicago)

The State of Texas Commission acts as if they don't care about all the controversial outcomes in their fights, and are answerable to nobody. Makes me appreciate the State of New Jersey even more for how they handled the Williams vs Lara judges.

Mike (DC)

With Williams-Kirkland a no go for 6/30. What has GBP mentioned as possible for the card at the Verizon Center? Seth Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

All TBA.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Any word on a possible co-headliner for the June 9 PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I've been hearing maybe Arce on the Pacquiao-Bradley card.

Chris (Seatte)

Dan, 640 million now for the Mega Millions. I would pay Floyd and Manny PERSONALLY to fight in my grandmother's living room.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

My wife bought some tix yesterday on the way home from work. If I win, don't expect a Monday Scorecard next week.

AJ Pesh (Strathcona MN)

Match-making at it finest ..... who would win in this fight: Mike Tyson's face tattoo or Jim Lampley's new glasses? The veteran Tyson's tatto will be a real test for those new Lampley glasses, but I think the up-and-coming glasses, with it's strong over-the-top dark color and "in your face" style of nose sitting will have the edge.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I like the tattoo by KO.

Brian (Toronto)

Wrestlemania predictions ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Cena, Undertaker, Jericho, Big Show.

chris k (chantilly, va)

RIP Bert Sugar :(

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Definitely. I was really sad about that. Bert was a longtime friend and just a wonerful guy to hang with. He was always great to me, a real mensch.

Rudy (Bell, CA)

Hello Dan. Has the Staples center been officially announced as the venue for the Ortiz-Berto rematch? If so, do you know when tickets go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

It's not official yet but that will be the site.

Matt (NYC)

Dan, Was really impressed by Zab last week. Do you think he waits for the Khan/Peterson winner, or goes in another direction?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Zab looked great. The Peterson-Khan rematch is not far away so I'm sure he'll wait to see what happens and decide what he wants to pursue.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, if you win the 640mil forget the scorecard but you still have to do the weekly chats!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Maybe.

Jason (Philly)

Just finished the notebook for this week. Does it hurt or help the fighters like Sadam Ali who insist on promoting themselves?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

In Ali's case, it doesn't help. He is so far off the radar at this point. He is spinning his wheels.

Mike (DC)

Any opponent yet for Adrien Broner on May 19?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Not yet. They're having a really hard time coming up with someone. The 130 division is horrible and some guys have turned it down or are not available.

Gale Von Hoy (Germany)

My scorecard read David Haye 119 - Klitshcko 110

Alex (San Diego)

I bet if you win Mega Millions we still get a Monday scorecard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I bet you are wrong.

Kevin (Milwaukee)

I thought Molina was winning the fight but made it so ugly with all the hold and pushing. I not really looking forward to seeing him fight again. He looked a lot better in his past fights

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

If the referee would not warn him Molina just kept doing what was working. And I didnt think the holding was all that bad. Kirkland initiated some of it too. And Molina also landed a lot of shots upside Kirkland's head. He dominated even with some holding.

Horn (Vegas)

Ok Dan you have been at ESPN for a while now. Don't you think it's time to establish the Freak's Hall of Shame? If so, I would nominate Jose Suliaman and Gale Van Hoy to be on the first ballot.

chris k (chantilly, va)

"I'm not Mother Teresa, but I'm not Charles Manson either."

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

That's Tyson for ya. Great quote.

chris k (chantilly, va)

how did Rahman become a 'mandatory'?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

It's the vile WBA. Dumb question.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Any chance the Geale/Pirog card winds up in NYC at the Theater in MSG? Shaw should do some promoting and market it to the Russian community here, do you think thats a possibililty or is this card destined for Chumash?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

It wont be at either place.

Gale Von Hoy (Parts Unknown)

I predict these "smart" phones are a crazy fad, and we'll be back to using reliable pay phones any day now.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I had Sarah Palin winning the 2008 presidential race 48 states to 2.

Frank (PHX)

Dan with HBO PPV doing the Rios fight and JMM on 4/14, will it have Lamply, Steward and Kellerman calling the fight or a different announce team?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

No, Top Rank is doing the production and will use its announcers.

The Met (Toronto)

"Super Six World Boxing Classic washout Arthur Abraham". Lol. That'll be written on his tombstone one day.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

True isn't it?

Wade (ATL)

Is there any place where I would be able to watch the Pavlik fight? Internet, anything?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Live on Azteca America at 9 pm ET on Saturday.

Gale Von Hoy (The Alamo)

Hey? Did we win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike (DC)

Any site yet for Tarver-Kayode? Small casino in Wyoming?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Not yet, but I've heard a few places mentioned, including SoCal.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I scored the first round of Pacquiao/Hatton to Hatton

Johnny (Brooklyn)

Big Diego Magdeleno fan, looked good in his next fight. Hope he gets a title shot soon.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He has looked good and I think he will sooner than later. He fights in a wide open division, which should help.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I will judge the cook-off at your upcoming Memorial Day BBQ. I have begun filling out my scorecard already.

Peter (NYC)

Thanks to Antwone Smith, I now watch fights on mute

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

How utterly annoying is his constant grunting?

Mike (DC)

Any truth to talks of Cloud-Pascal? Love it! Bombs away!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, being discussed for August on Showtime. I have some stuff about it in my blog, which should be published at any time.

C.M. (Toronto)

Not even Jim Lampley's funky glasses could have seen what Gale Van Hoy saw on Saturday night.

Matt (NYC)

Not sure what you were watching, but Molina's holding was beyond excessive. Ref did an extremely poor job at stopping it. Ruling at the end was a joke too

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Schorle was HORRIBLE.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Michael Grant over Lennox Lewis Rd 1

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I had Arthur Abraham winning the Super Six final 120-108

Horace (Ely, NV)

Hi Dan! How impressed are you with Bryant Jennings? Do you think he has as much upside as America's other top heavyweight prospect, Seth Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Jennings looked good vs Liakhovich and he is developing. I'd like to see more of him.

Joe (Vancouver)

I see Wladimir Klitschko sold his Olympic Gold Medal and raised $1,000,000 for disadvantaged children in Ukraine. Why does such a fine man and great champion as Wlad receive so much bashing and negative criticism from some people?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Because a lot of people are morons. (By the way, the guy who bought it gave it back to Wladimir and will just donate the money.)

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

My score card for Custer's Last Stand: Custer 118 - Indians 111

Craig (Colorado )

It was fun flipping between the Judah/Paris card on NBC and the Garcia/Morlaes on HBO. Not only no commercles but no 1 minute between rounds. Just non stop boxing.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I thought Montell Griffin had a strong 1st round in that rematch with Roy Jones Jr.

Keith H (Seattle)

Keith Olbermann did a great tribute to Bert Sugar (Keith's first job) on Monday. Here's the link for those intrested: http://current.com/shows/countdown/videos/keith-olbermann-pays-tribute-to-the-life-of-his-first-boss-boxing-writer-and-historian-bert-randolph-sugar

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Yup, I watched that. It's terrific. All Fight Freaks should check it out.

John (Phoenix)

Gale Van Hoy is a complete nightmare, but in defense of the man, he is nearly 135 years old. I heard he graduated from High School with Yoda.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Which is why he should not be permitted to judge anymore, like when elderly people have to give up their drivers license because they could hurt someone. Well Van Hoy hurts fighter's careers with his obscene scoring.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

James Toney got robbed against Lebedev. I had it 119-110 Toney!

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Note to Freaks, many Bert Sugar ESPN.com chats are available on the archive: http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/archive/_/id/246/name/bert-sugarAlways a good read.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Munroe vs Quigg. Great fight, crappy belt. They don't need that trinket to help sell/promote the fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Agreed. The vile WBA is a joke for creating another pointless interim belt.

Lou (Detroit)

Povetkin-Rahman? Wladimir-Thompson II? Really? Who do we have to thank for this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

The vile WBA and IBF.

salvatore (socal)

are you looking forward to seeing Sillakh batter and punish Grachev or does the fight not do much for you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I always like seeing Sillakh, although I am not very familiar with Grachev.

Gilbert, SLC [via mobile]

Dan, Texas should never hold a fight again. This is what keeps the common sports fan away from the sport.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I've heard that a lot of fight freaks miss seeing your cabinets during the Ring Tones segments...

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

LOL!

Gale Van Hoy (Israel)

Goliath 120 - David 108

John (Austin)

Maybe Gale Van Haye (I mean Hoy) was having trouble with his toe Saturday night.

Sancho (underneath the bed)

Hey Dan had a quick question!!!!! Any word on where the Ortiz - Berto fight is going to be held???? gonna be a great card with Soto vs Mathyses undercard!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Most likely Staples Center.

Bobby (Louisville)

More of a chance for the HALL OF FAME- Pavlik or Jermain Taylor?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Neither.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

I guess this will be known as the Van Hoy chat. I love when your chats get a title.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Hilarious.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

On your next Ring Tones segment while talking, you should hold and pet one of your cats Dr. Claw style.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

LOL. Actually, during the taping last week, one of my cats jumped up on the desk I was at and he nearly wagged his tail in front of the camera.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Who else had Kevin Johnson beating Vitali ?

Nicholas (Montreal )

What do you think Paulie Malignaggi's chances are of pulling out a win in the Ukraine?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

He'll need to put on a boxing masterclass to get a decision there because he has almost no chance for a KO.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I had Gatti ahead of Mayweather 59-55 at the time of the stoppage

Danny (NY)

The way Zab looked, any more interest in a Khan rematch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

No. Why? He had his chance and did NOTHING.

Van (Phoenix)

Does Gale Van Hoy get up and use the restroom during fights, like one of those old guys that has to pee a lot?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AL M (NYC)

Did you catch Jimmy Iovine's shout out to Harold Lederman on idol last night ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

YES!! I tweeted about it. That was epic.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Mormeck was cruising towards a UD before Wlad stopped him

Frank (PHX)

Gale Van Hoy had Santa Cruz beating Cassamayor. . . . Oh wait a min some other blind judges actually did score the fight that way

John (Idaho)

Any news on the love child?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He headlines NBC Sports Net card on June 1 vs. Gabe Rosado.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Baldomir got robbed against Floyd

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I had Diaz beating Malignaggi. Oh wait a minute, I actually did.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

YES!!!

the problem [via mobile]

Dan, during your dinner with your wife for your anniversary what type.of food did u eat? AfriCAn? AmeriCAN? MexiCAN? DominiCAN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

LOL!!! AmeriCAN. We had a lovely night out to celebrate. 8 years.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I had Judah ahead 1-0 versus the shower stall

Adam (Tarzana)

Great piece on Kelly Pavlik and his work with Robert Garcia in today's notebook. Garcia is now established himself as one of the top five trainers in the sport. You agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Thanks. Robert has a good stable to top fighters and he is certainly part of their success. Donaire, Rios, his brother Mikey.

Mario (Houston)

Gale DAN hoy, who has better chance of winning, Cotto or Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Than nickname offends me.

Ruben (Houston, TX.)

Hopefully Gale doesn't get the call to read out tonights numbers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

If he had the winning Mega Millions ticket would he even know it?

pierre benoist (canada)

why all the hate for gale van hoy? i think he's a fine judge.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Guess you guys have to stick together.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi)

Dan, do you know how much they will be charging for the Rios PPV April 14th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

I believe it is $44.95.

John (Austin)

Worst career moves for Gale Van Hoy: 1) air traffic controller, 2) proctologist, 3) judge that decides death row appeals

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Wow. Just wow.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi)

Is Jessie Vargas getting snubbed from the Mayweather-Cotto card now that Deandre Latimore is opening up the PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

No, Vargas vs Alfonso Gomez is still on the PPV.

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Si Hun Park over RJJ

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi)

Dan, what happen to Casey Ramos? Wasn't he supposed to fight on the opening bout of the televised card this weekend in San Antonio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I was told he had strep throat and withdrew.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Somehow, I think Eugenia Williams is thankful for Gale Van Hoy...

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

Happy to announce I will be taking over Chuck Giampa on 'Inside The Mind Of A Judge'......... .....

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Awww..... sh--.

Joey (UK)

So sad to see that Frank Warren, through his matchmaking, has been clear in stating he has absolutely no faith in Nathan Cleverly's abilities.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

The recent Cleverly matches are a disgrace. Giving him one duck like Karpency, whatever. I get it, it was the homecoming. But two in a row is sad, especially when you go back on your word about making the mandatory. Shame on Frank and Cleverly.

Will (Queens, Ny)

Dan, we better not see delay in your Monday Scorecard going up. We are all gonna freak out thinking you won! Remember the freaks if u win lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Maybe if I win there will be a Freak BBQ!!!!

jh123 (australia)

What do you think of Mundine skipping out on Trout?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No surprise. Mundine camp has never wanted that fight ever. And I have no issue with that fine. But dont lead them on making them think you want it, coming close to a deal when Trout agreed to go to Australia and then reneg on the deal. They could have also simply declined instead of wasting everyone's time on the purse bid.

Nick (West Virginia)

Read where Sky turned down a possible Vitali-Toe Boy fight, any truth to that and do you think that fight happens ever?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I hadn't heard that but if so, good for Sky. Vitali vs Toe is a joke right now. Toe does not deserve a shot at the title or the payday. Let him go beat a real guy first instead of trying to con his way into another money fight. #toe

Gale Van Hoy (Texas)

I have just been offered a job as the head NFL reply official! #excited

Chewy (Suisun)

Who really has the last slot on the undercard of Mayweather/Cotto? Yesterday there were reports the Ponce De Leon was on the card.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Ponce was considered for the card. At this point I dont think he is on. The lineup for TV will be Mayweather-Cotto, Alvarez-Mosley, Vargas-Gomez and Quintana-Latimore.

Cody (Minneapolis)

every fight on the mayweather-cotto pay per view is awful.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

If you feel that way then don't buy the show. Nobody will force you to.

John (CT)

At the end of the day, some heavyweights are more deserving of title fights than others, but no one is truly a worthy challenger to Vitali - so if he wants to fight Toe, let him fight toe. The outcome will be the same as if he were fighting anyone else.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Anyone is more worthy of Toe at this point.

darryl p (indianapolis)

there be talks about a zab judah vs danny garcia fight....do u think that fight can happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I wouldn't mind seeing that. I doubt it will happen, at least for the time being, but you never know. Garcia does have a due mandatory, which I hope is enforced.

Aaron (MI)

How can you say Toe needs to "beat a real guy" before getting a shot at Vitali when you endorse Arreola vs Wlad? Arreola has fought a string of bums. Haye beat Ruiz and Valuev at heavyweight. You need to get over it with Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

At least Arreola has stayed busy and won five in a row against the guys who were there. He's not a con artist who has no heart. Arreola goes in there and lays it all out for better or worse. Toe doesn't. #toe

Mike (Massapequa)

Thought the heavyweight Jennings looked pretty decent last week you think there is some potential there ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Yes, there is.

Slater (West By God Virginia )

We all make jokes about bad ref's, bad judges, and the awful sanctioning bodies, but few solutions are offered. Dan do you have any thoughts on how to clean the sport up? Database of bad judges, and refs? Maybe more investigations into fixes? Somethings gotta happen the number of bad decisions is out of hand!

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

I agree and I wish I had the answer. All I can do is continue to expose it.

Jose Sulamain (Mexico City)

What do you mean bad judges, fixes and bad decisions? Im not sure Im understanding.....however, for a small sanctioning fee we can sit down and discuss these issues.

David (Mims Fl.)

Speaking of Arreola, will he fight again before getting his probable shot at Wlad

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Yes, he will.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - Kessler vs Alan Green? Really?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Unfortunately. What a terrible fight.

john (syracuse)

since adrien is having a tough time finding an opponent why dont they just give him gary russell jr that shouldnt be hard they have the same promoter

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Good fight but I guess you don't understand why it won't be made.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Kessler vs Green is a bad fight, but at least its for a silver belt. That gives it some credibility at least!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

My bad. #wbcisdisgusting

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What's your stance on 10 - 10 rounds? Do you use them rarely when scoring, or a bit more liberally ala Mr. Atlas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

There is a time and place for them. I probably score a couple per year. I do not think there is a place for a 10-10 in the 12th round of a tight fight, the way Mark Green scored the final round of Garcia-Morales. Typically, if I score a 10-10 round it will be the first round of a fight where nothing happens.

Liam (Boston)

Kudos to the Klitschkos for the Boxing Writer's award. They are among the best ambassadors in the sport and the recognition is richly deserved.

Brandon (Mass)

Just watched the Keith Olbermann segment on Bert Sugar. Truly moving.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

All Freaks should check that video out.

Seamus (St. Paul, MN)

Dan The Man, please tell Cody in Minneapolis that Champs in St. Paul always has PPV's for a $10 cover. The guy that works the door must be a freak because he calls it a "small sanctioning fee" if he needs to make you change.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Love it.

Reid (Cleveland)

Not to spend a lot of time on this garbage fight, but will Kessler v Green be on Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

No, thankfully. Although if it was a Golden Boy or Al Haymon fight, it probably would be. :)

Kevin (Boston)

After the Cotto-Yuri Foreman site I made a point to go up and shake Bert Sugar's hand. He was super cool and happy to talk to me. I asked him what he thought of the fight, he smirked and replied, "kid showed he's got matzah balls"

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

That's Bert.

Peter (Portland)

People rag on Klitchko-Thompson 2 but Tony definately earned the opportunity. I would have preferred to see him against Vitali though.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I dont disagree. I'd rather see Tony vs Vitali because it's a fresh fight. But Tony has won 5 in a row, all by knockout, since the first Wlad fight and even though it was lopsided he at least gave Wlad his toughest fight of any of his defenses in this reign. Is it a perfect situation? Definitely not, but it's better than some other fights that could have been made.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Really random question, but is Juan Urango officially retired?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I dont think he called a press conference or put out a press release but he has not been in touch with his promoter, has not fought and has not been heard from. Pretty sure you can he's retired and raising the pigs on his pig farm.

One half of the Wild Samoans (The Fiji Islands)

More headbutts?? Wrestlemania or Bradley-Pacqiao?????

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Tough call.

darryl p (indianapolis)

any news on devon alexander next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

No. He got cut in his last fight and probably wont fight until the late summer or fall.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

By the way, here's the notebook link: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7754221/kelly-pavlik-hoping-change-course

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

My new random thoughts blog has also been posted: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/900/texas-officiating-needs-a-makeover

Dustin (Columbus, Ohio)

Dan, great stuff about Bert earlier this week. Would he attend every big fight or just the major big name ones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Bert would come to most of the PPV fights working for HBO. He'd also come to New York fights regularly.

Samuel (Indianapolis)

Dan, fact or fiction that Chavez jr and Martinez will fight on september 15?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

I'll believe it when I see it. I do not think it happens.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

I considered Sugar the most knowledgeable 'historian' when it came to boxing, now that hes passed, who takes that mantle from him, or whos in the running?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

That is a good question. There is a huge void.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

What really boggles my mind is how can millions of boxing fans have more reasoning and common sense then actually licensed judges like amm Gale Van Hoy? Plus at every fight when they show the judges they are older than 50 easily, I've seen some look in their 80s, lol. I just don't get it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

You and me both my Freak brother.

John (Austin)

Dan, I'm a high school teacher and one of my students just got a bad test grade in my class. He referred to it has being "Van Hoyed). True story. I think I'm supposed to be insulted but it was pretty funny.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Epic.

darryl p (indianapolis)

do u think kelly pavilk will stay on the right path? when the big fights or big money comes do u think he will go back to his old ways?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

How would I know? I just hope Kelly keeps his life and career together. It will be good for him and good for boxing.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Dan if you win the lottery buy the rights to Don King's video collection and start your own channel.

Gale Van Hoy (Rocky IV)

I had Creed over Drago at the time of death.

Nicholas (Montreal )

How much would you take from the Garcia-morales fight? Is it a case of an impressive young fighter or an old Morales making Garcia look good?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I thought Garcia won the fight but did not look overly impressive. A Morales closer to his prime crushes him. But Garcia had the youth and quickness and just is fresher physically and had more than Morales, who even as an old fighter, was still very competitive. So I'd say it was a combination of both.

Mike (Chicago)

Dan, is there any indication what personal problem Niskioka is dealing with right now? I can't wait for him to fight again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I've asked his people and they aren't saying.

John (Austin)

I'm not defending Van Hoy in any way shape or form but I challenge any Freak out there to mute any fight and judge it for yourselves, just to see how close you are to the "real" judges scores. Sometimes its really easy, sometimes not so much. Granted, Molina over Kirkland should have been easy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Kirkland-Molina was very easy. And keep in mind, the fans in the arena and media dont have access to the commentary either.

Kevin (LA)

Dan, does Garcia's camp realize they need to straighten out his shots a bit - it seems like that is going to hurt him against a faster fighter

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

They've been hearing it for years and dont nothing to clean it up.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Garcia just doesn't impress me to be honest. He wins his fights based on pure determination.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

What's wrong with that?

Emil (Titusville, Fl.)

Speaking of video collections, Dan who has possession of the extensive library of the deceased Bill Cayton and Jimmy Jacobs.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

ESPN bought that library years ago.

mossy (uk)

garcia maidana makes sense. good fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Very good fight. I talked about it in this week's Ring Tones. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7752420&categoryid=2491554

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Here's my other Ring Tones from this week on Pavlik's comeback: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7752490&categoryid=2491554

Nick (DE)

I think Judah looked great, but what about Paris, how do you look that confused after talking all the mess?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Paris is/was vastly overrated. I was at his fight with Emanuel Augustus, who I thought schooled him on the Bradley-Alexander undercard and Paris got a GIFT. I'm mad at myself for picking him to beat Judah.

Ferdie Porno King (dominican republic)

hey dan what time does linares fight start?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Fox Deportes telecast begins at 10 pm ET on Saturday.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Fox Deportes telecast begins at 10 pm ET on Saturday.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, I love that HBO is showing the replay of Mayweather/Corrales. I've only seen it once and it gives me a chance to save it on my DVR. Do you think thats Mayweathers best performance he's had so far?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I love that HBO gave fans the chance to pick the classic fight replay. I was at Mayweather-Corrales and it was a BRILLIANT Mayweather performance. Five knockdowns against undefeated monster with one-shot KO power at 130. Mayweather made him look like an amateur. I rate that as Mayweather's most impressive victory.

Michael C (HOU)

Dan. Sat right behind you and press row last weekend in Reliant. Did you see anyone on the undercards you liked? What was the reason for Cotto/Castillo not happening?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I liked how the Charlo brothers looked, especially the one with the big KO. Cotto declined to accept the fight when Castillo was way overweight and Cotto was already spotting him weight to begin with. Then Castillo did not make an attempt to lose anything after he was over. In fact, he gained weight when he weighed again later. So the fight was canceled.

Pete (Jersey)

My DVR ran out in the middle of the Judah-Paris fight. Does anyone know when it will re-play?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Check the cable guide. There are some replays scheduled.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats up Dan, long time since I been on the chat, Just want to say how disgusted I was in the robbery of Molina's performance and Gale Van Hoy scorecard, why is he allowed to judge, his bosses must be blind to if they continue to let him judge

Dustin (Columbus, Ohio)

When is HBO showing PBF/Corrales? Please and thank you!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Somebody didnt read the notebook. I forget the time and day but it is listed in today's notebook.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Chris Chatman is no joke and Jermell Charlo annihilated him. That was really impressive.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

A one-punch, clean knockout. Was impressive, although I was not very impressred with Chatman at all.

Danny (Unadilla, NY)

Dan, what did you make of the Proksa loss? I was surprised after his previous dominant performance, although, I had him winning the fight close.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I think the cut hurt him for sure and I also think many of us overrated him for the Sylvester victory when it might have also had to do with Sylvester being a bit shot, so much to the point that he retired after the fight. Maybe Proksa got too much credit for beating Sylvester.

Bryon (Chicago)

Maybe my perception was skewed because I was rooting for Kirkland but it seem that Molina had a 1:1 punch to grab ratio...

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

You're being a bit overdramatic.

AL M (NYC)

Dan, How are tickets sales going for Hopkins vs Dawson II?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

I've heard very well, actually.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

For all the grief Blind Van Hoy has gotten today, Jon Schorle has not gotten nearly enough.

Jake (Homewood, IL)

Dan,Could you see a possisble rematch between Arreola and Adamek as their next fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Not next, no chance. Arreola is going to get Wlad later in the year. But I could see that down the road for sure. This time in Newark.

Frank (PHX)

Dan, Kirkland looked really SLOW and just not into it last week, do you think now that we know he needs shoulder surgery is the reason why his performance was bad?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I think that had to be part of it.

dcalame (Arkansas)

Rumor has it....Gale Van Oy scored the first round 10-9 for Spinks against Mike Tyson lol

Cody (Minneapolis)

Jon Schorle is an abomination of an official. Not just in boxing, but in MMA as well. I have been saying for years that he is the worst "referee" (I use the term loosely) in all of combat sports. Not only does he not know the rules, but i can think of at least a half dozen instances where he has nearly gotten someone killed.

Ferdie Porno King (dominican republic)

hey dan when is espn gonna give u your own show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Ask them.

sammy AL-SAIDI (DEARBORN,MI)

who got worst luck, gabriel campillo or carlos molina?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Molina.

j (nm)

Any update on when golovkin is fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I spoke to his people recently and probably summerish in Europe.

Piotr (Jersey City)

Have you ever been to Prudential for an Adamek fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I've covered a fight there but it was not Adamek.

Dan (Toronto)

hey dan are the weekend scorecards archived on espn.com? would like to see some of them as i look forward to them each week

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Yes, they are all in my archive, which is in date order.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Adamek vs Jennings on June 16th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Doubtful. I dont think they'll do that. Would be interesting though.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Is JMM-Rios as good a match-up as a Rios-Gamboa was? For me it isn't even though it sounds like a great great fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I'd like to see either one, although my preference given the choice between the two would have been for Rios-Gamboa.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

I would put Floyd vs Gatti up there as well. But I dont think anyone expected him to do what he did to Diego.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Mayweather vs Gatti was an epic mismatch. Gatti had a big name but no chance to actually win unless he landed a miracle shot.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Dan who was responsible at hbo for putting up past mayweather and cotto fights up to a fan vote to be aired a couple of days before their fight. Im looking forward to seeing mayweather corrales again

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I dont know but that is HBO PPV chief Mark Taffet and his excellent staff. That was a great idea, whoever had it.

Ken (OH)

Dan, Judah-Rios, any interest?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Not really. Other fights I am more intersted in.

Joe (Ellsworth Air Force Base)

youtube has Floyd v Diego widely available for those freaks who cant wait to see it again. I have watched it at least 10 times.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I would suggest you find some other activities to fill your obviously empty schedule.

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Dan, did you see the Campbell-Cayo fight last week? thoughts

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Have not seen the fight, but saw the result. Terrific win for Nate.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you get a chance to read all the new stuff from the week and today. And enjoy FNF tonight and the Pavlik fight tomorrow and, of course, WrestleMania on Sunday!!! Talk to you next week. Peace.
