And here we are again for the Friday chat. I'm in a place called Uncasville for Bellator 63 so will have to do a sort of shortened power session. Also TUF Live going off tonight, Nurmagomedov gets a foe, King Mo's Zuffa release, and whatever else is on your minds. Let's get this thing rolling....
Do you really think that Mayhem will retire if he loses to CB Dolloway?
I saw heard him say that, and I don't know. One thing to bear in mind is that Bisping loss and all the fallout was hard to take. My guess is if he lost a tough, inspired fight to Dolloway he'd stick around. But that's just speculation. I think the UFC is hoping they see a better version.
Buy or sell Jones/Evans going past the third round?
Hmm...I would buy that. Rashad knows his best chance is to grind with Jones, and if he prevails with his game plan at all he could drag it into the deep rounds. Jones has the ability to shut things down quick, but will say it goes into the championship rounds.
Hey Chaz. I have a meeting at 3pm, so hopefully you get this and I can check the answer post meeting...I'm guessing the winner of Mir/Cain will get the winner of Reem/JDS...Then what? Can't see them giving Bigfoot a shot if he beats Roy Nelson. Ay chance that the winner of the Strikeforce HW tournament will be next in line? That would be kind of cool to "unify" the titles,no?
My man in Manitoba...yeah, the heavyweight division gets very interesting very quick in May. All the elite heavies are fighting then (save Shane Carwin). I know that the winner of Mir/Velasquez will fight the winner of JDS/Overeem, but beyond that it's hard to say. It depends on how the fights play out. Looking forward to seeing Del Rosario in the octagon.
Can you explain Chael Sonnen's popularity to me? A lying cheater with a so-so record who will say anything (no matter how derogatory) to get under someones skin. Are there just that many people with low IQs out there?
He just talks. And talks. I guess there's some charisma. He's certainly well-spoken, contradictory, audacious. He lies for fun. Keeps people guessing. In general, he entertains, and people are compelled by whatever he's up to. Look for it to get a lot more intense in the coming months ahead of his Rio date.
who do you like overreem or dos santos? do you think dos santos will stand the whole fight? Or do you think we will see these other aspects of his game he supposedly has?
I am leaning towards dos Santos, primarily because Overeem has been hit or miss for much of his career. He looked good against Brock, but we learned later Lesnar was half out the door. You can't say the same for JDS. He has looked great in every fight so far. I think he'll look to stand and trade with Overeem, but I wouldn't be surprised if we do see his ground game this time through (which is at this point is only theoretical).
Chuck how can I get your job? Interview the best fighters in the world, get great seats to watch the biggest fights in mma, And get to chat while getting paid.
Just write a blog or something and get used to typing fast. Then see if what you wrote makes any sense. Pretty soon you'll be cageside.
Cole Konrad vs. Eric Prindle = two fat guys gassing out quick, that's a title fight I'm looking forward to.
Ha! Yeah, it certainly has potential of being a "slug" fest. April 13, we find out.
What's the hold-up in announcing Sonnen vs Silva II??
There's no real hold up. The UFC has officially announced it. The only bit of confusion is Sonnen saying it's not official, that his cryptic demands haven't been met. But it's happening.
What's the deal of putting Aoki/Alvarez on the same weekend as UFC 145?
That's a big bummer for media types who want to cover the fight that will be in Atlanta. But for a fight fan, what a great couple of nights of fights. Looking forward to that tussle. Alvarez has wanted to avenge that loss for a long, long time.
whats up chuck....any idea who anthony pettis might be getting next when he comes back from surgery? Would love to see Bendo/Pettis 2, gotta go with Bendo in that one
If there ever was such a thing, it's the perfect time for Pettis to have surgery. He can let Bendo/Edgar play out, and maybe sneak into a rematch with Henderson just as he's ready to go (if Bendo beats Edgar again).
Will you be making it out to Stockholm in a few weeks? You need to check out the Cafe Opera if you do. And also The Liffey!
Isn't the Liffey in Ireland? I won't be making it to Stockholm, which is a bummer.
Hey Chuck whats up? Who do you think makes the biggest statement at UFC 146 and why?
I think if Frank Mir were to find a way to beat Cain Velasquez, he would make the biggest statement. Not a lot of people are picking Mir, but he'd have strung together a big list of victims at that point.
Who you picking this weekend?
I'm taking RJ Clifford in his fight. Otherwise...will go Bryan Baker tonight in Bellator, Ben Saunders too.
Chucky! What do you think of Thiago Silva's chances against the Mauler???
A lot of uncertainty with Silva, but if he's anything like the beast he was in the UFC 90s, I think he could be trouble for Gustafsson. But I am taking the Swede. Too much length, too many tools.
Any word if the UFC is coming to the Philippines?
I haven't heard anything new on this. Would love to see them do it, as I know the country is into MMA. Plus, to hear the American media's late-night horror stories of $.50 balut? Too good to fathom.
What matchup are you most looking forward to in UFC 145, non Evans/Jones division?
I love the Miguel Torres/Michael McDonald scrap, as well as the Rory MacDonald fight with Che Mills. I don't think Rory will have much trouble, but his future is bright and this is a nice showcase. With McDonald, the kid is 21 years old and hungry. Talking to him about Torres gives him goosebumps. He's wanted this fight since he was 16.
I know that Matt Mitrione was a Lion for a little while. They let him in, and nobody paid for the privilege of seeing it.
OK, Charlie, you've seen Lloyd Woodard beat Patricky. Is he the favorite to win the tournament now?
That was good stuff from Woodard. He looks like the kind of guy who walks around with a musket in Missoula. That helps. But beating Patricky Pitbull the way he did was a great boost to his career. I still think Hawn is the one to beat, though.
Did you hear Bjorn Rebney make a reference between not knowing the difference between "Chuck Liddell and Chuck Mindenhall" on Ariel's show? I was like, who's Chuck Liddell?? ;)
I did see that. First time I've ever been a part of name association with the Iceman. Our biceps are very similar, too. The only difference is maybe six or eight inches.
Your MMA live boys picked Edson Barbosa's ko of Terry Etim as the 3rd best knockout of the last 12 months! You got to be kidding me. That s one of the best ko's of all time. Tell me you wouldnt have voted that way if you were on. They really missed that one, but Jorge Rivera is great on that show I thought.
I have to admit, I was surprised they dismissed Barboza's kick, too. That, to me, is the KO of the year so far. It landed so clean and flush, and dropped Etim like he'd been shot. Amazing stuff.
Thinking about heading down to Mohegan to see Bellator tonight. Give me one good reason to go instead of watch on TV.
Hungry gang of fighter, for one thing. Plus local boy Dan Cramer is on the undercard. But none of that matters as much as this: Roulette tables and clinking bottles of top shelf bourbon.
Whats the most brutal KO you've seen live?
Maybe that Cheick Kongo knockout of Pat Barry in Pittsburgh. I'd have to think about it, but that one comes to mind. Also Yves Edwards getting starched by Sam Stout.
No MMA Live this week? What gives?? But here's my question, do you like Jake Shields better as a middleweight?
Not the worst idea for Shields. He has his crack at GSP and didn't get much done, and it's a long, snaking line back to a shot. At 185 there aren't as many challengers to Spider, a guy he has said in the past he believes he has antidote for. He did beat Dan Henderson at 185 pounds....so, there's some intrigue there.
How weird is the Hunt/Struve fight going to look? How do you think it'll play out? Those 2 bodies are about as diametrically different as you can get in the same weight class...
I was thinking about that. Mark Hunt is a compressed slab of muscle. Struve is filling in giant. It'll look a lot like when Roy Nelson fought Struve. Nelson was able to get inside and land the big shot, and I'm guessing that's Hunt's whole game plan. Should be a fun scrap.
Great chat chuck! Love getting inside information on mma. After the Spyder takes out Sonnen, who is left that seems like a interesting fight besides and please don't say the count!
Maybe Mark Munoz. He was sort of right there in the conversation, and you can't underestimate his Donkey Kong.
Make sure you touch on the fact, that the UFC has purchased a helicopter, pope mobile, and has paid hundreds of riot police to ensure the safety of Chael Sonnen after he rag dolls Silva and the country of Brazil burns to the ground.
I am vastly intrigued as to how the scene at UFC 147 will look.
Chuck any word on Shane Carwin's return? Do not see him making another run at the title but never seen a boring fight with him. Possibly a welcoming for Fedor if there is any truth to the rumors?
The last I heard he was on track for a summer return, and I haven't heard too much since. Not sure if the UFC is interested in Fedor (they say no), but Carwin/Emelianenko would be cool by me.
Word is that Gustofson is training in the states and destroying people. He needs to get as strong as possible, but do you give him any chance against Bones if he shows some good stuff in his next two fights.
It's too early to say. I know that a lot of people sort of see him closing in on a shot, sort of the last 205er behind Rashad and Hendo who might give Jones a run for his money. He has some good tools, but so far when I contemplate that fight it seems like Jones has big advantages in most areas.
A lot of talk about UFC 146 even before UFC 145 plays out. Which in your mind is the bigger card??
Yeah, there has been a lot of people talking about UFC 146. The novelty of an all-heavyweight main card is there. And you have Edson Barboza on the undercard, plus Dan Hardy/Duane Ludwig. UFC 145 has a lot of big fights, too. I call it a push.
Are the TUF fighters going to crazy by being in the house for 13 weeks instead of the normal?
I mean, you talk to any of the fighters who went through the usual six week stay in the house with all those deprivations and they say "It was worth it, but I'd never do it again." Add seven weeks to that, and it's a regular booby hatch. I expect there'll be some contentious moments ahead.
do you think Brock will ever return for a novelty fight?
I really don't. I think he's done. He made some money, and he went for it. He was the champ, so he already experienced the zenith. He'll return to pro wrestling in some fashion, though. After he's caught all the crappie out of Lake Ida.
after ufc on fox, are there any next steps for MMA to take it to the levels where dana says it could be on par with soccer (football around the world)?
Time. I am not sure that it will rival soccer ever, honestly. That has been deep in family lines for generations. But the UFC just has to keep building its brand, and in time it'll be something more than a niche sport.
With no fights looming, who ya got in the NCAA tourney?
I picked Kentucky to start it, and they have looked every bit the tyrant of the tournament I suspected. So will stick with them. They rent the country's best 19-year olds and then ship them to the Association.
If you're a UFC fighter, do you cancel your twitter account?
No, because there are incentives to be found. If I'm a fighter, I do what Tim Kennedy is doing. That is, I crack. I put on a wig and give people the woolies. What I don't do is tweet things like this "Got up early. Quick bagel and off to the gym!" That's such strong banality.
if they fight tomorrow, who would you pick: bones or cain?
Wow. Tough one. I might pick Velasquez. He'd need to tackle Jones and just crush him with hulk. But I could see it the other way, too. Strafe, bam, boom....Jones on the feet.
How is your bracket looking and who do you have winning the games this weekend?
I have Kentucky. The rest are foreign to me. I picked Colorado State to upset Murray State in the opening round. When that fell apart, I watched through my fingers as the rest crumbled.
Which athlete from any of the big four sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) has the biggest chance of making it in MMA?
Tim Tebow. Heavyweight.
Is UFC 146 too stacked? Surely a draw like Dan Hardy would be better served fight on one of the many UFC TV cards in June rather than a Facebook prelim. UFC 146 also has super LHW prospect Glover Texiera fighting Kyle Kingsbury; once again, buried on facebook. Does UFC need to better allocate their talent?
It seems that way sometimes. Either cards are stacked top to bottom, or appear weak top to bottom. I think the long layoff between PPVs has made these next couple of PPVs look deep.
Favorite old pro wrestler. I have to go with Doink the clown.
Leaping Lanny Poffo was always a favorite. Liked his poems. But I liked better he gave them away to the fans via tossed Frisbees.
Chuck, give me a prediction on the ppv buyrates for ufc 145, 146 and 147? Do any of them break 1 million buys?
I don't think any of them break a million, but I think UFC 147 will outdo the others. Got the sport's best seller in Sonnen.
whats up chuck! any word on who else is on the barnett comier card?rockhold kennedy, woodley marquart?
I was assuming that Marquardt/Woodley would be on that card, but I haven't heard anything.
What's your take on the Kimbo "fight"? Dive/fix?
Dive. Green's corner yells 15 seconds, he drops his hands and opens his chin up for business. The coup de grace didn't have much behind it, either. Fishy.
Alright guys. I need to catch the shuttle over to the Mohegan Sun for Bellator. If I didn't get to your question, hit me up on Twitter @ChuckMindenhall. Until next Friday, my friends...until next Friday.
