Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Full disclosure to start the chat. I'm sitting in a McDonalds in Waynesboro, GA (about 30 minutes away) tried to take a "short cut" that didn't work. So as soon as we're done, I'm heading for that magical place for my first time. After I get in the gate, what should I do first?! And who's gonna win? Let the quickest golf chat... BEGIN!!

CP (Charlotte)

Do we have a new golf term? Kim'ed. The feminine synonym of Hoch'ed and Sanders'ed. Related terms TC Chen'ed and Vandeveld'ed. That was tough to watch.

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

The worst part was that putt still meant she was in a playoff so you knew you had to keep watching just to see her lose!

Mike (Charlotte, NC)

Just wanted to say I'll be having a Pimento cheese sandwhich while I enjoy this chat

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

That's awesome. I've only ever had one but it wasn't at Augusta. I am a huge egg salad fan and I hear theirs are on par too.

Scott (DE)

The winner of the Masters shoots ________?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

-16. -4 everyday should do the trick. Especially since there's weather popping up in the forecast for later in the week.

Alex (Anaheim)

If there were no such thing as golf, what would you be writing about?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

I wouldn't. I'd still be doing stand up comedy talking about how the world needs a new game that's outdoors and takes 5 hours to play. Where drinking and driving may be involved!

Muhammad denver co [via mobile]

Your view of woods chances at augusta ?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

I've been saying it since last fall, he's going to win.

Aaron L. (Missouri)

How will Tiger's Distance control come into play at Augusta? There's not too many holes you can miss short or long and still salvage a good number.

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

It'll play huge but Tiger knows the course so well he knows where to miss and he'll always err on the safe side. It's why he's finished 4th the last two years on one leg.

Griffin (Geneseo, NY)

Have you had a chance to see the par 3 course? If so, what's it like for the us who have never been there?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Funny you should ask, I just found out from my boss that I'm doing a Live Chat DURING the Par 3 tournament on Wednesday. Ask me then!

Griffin (Geneseo, NY)

When a bunch of espn golf guys go to one tournament, how is it decided who gets to follow what group?

Dylan (Buffalo, NY)

Hey Michael, big fan of yours!...I am pretty new to golf in the fact that I just started to play last year, and I just started to heavily follow the PGA Tour this year. I always hear you and the other ESPN writers talk about how Augusta is a perfect fit for Tiger and Phil. What aspects of their games make them play so well on this course? Thanks! O, and go TIGER!

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

Thanks Dylan. Experience and creativity is what gives them such an advantage there. They can not only see things (shots) but will try things that no one else would.

@pjmorgan11 (Provo, Utah)

What are the things (traditions) you HAVE to do when you get to Augusta each year?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

Well since this is my first year going, give me some suggestions. I know about the pimento and cheese sandwich. I have to get a flag, a hat, and a polo. I have a scorecard (long story and I promise I'll share it sometime). What else

James (New York City)

Just read Haney's book... definitely a "golf book" and certainly not a tabloid gossip piece... thought Haney was more than fair and complimentary to Tiger...

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

It's funny how people who've only read the excerpts from the book have a different opinion then the people who've read the whole thing. Red flag for me but I still haven't decided whether or not I wanna read it.

Ronnie Davis (Montgomery Alabama)

Michael What are your top five finsihes of and or winners of the Masters?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Nicklaus in '86 still the best. The rest can be debated... Tiger's 1st, Phil's first, Faldo's when Norman collapsed, and Schwartzel because he did it in a way we've never seen

Tim (Denver)

What do you think about Steve Stricker's chances this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

He's gonna be fresh like Adam Scott, but his length (lack of) could hurt him if they get any kind of rain on the weekend.

Scott (DE)

How has Angel Cabrera been playing as of late? He seems to do well every year for the Masters?

John (PA)

Angel Cabrera a good sleeper pick?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Yes, he is a good sleeper pick. And since having all the dental work done he seems to be getting back to form. He's another one that for some reason no matter how he's playing, Augusta brings the good stuff out in him.

Steve (Minneapolis)

Could the women have played any slower yesterday?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

It's been an issue on that tour for a while, but I have to say they will definitely do enforce time penalties much quicker than the PGA Tour, but yesterday for a major I guess they just got lax. it was brutal. Looked liked my muni Saturday on the first tee at 10am.

Kirk (Cleveland)

Didn't know you did stand-up. Been doing it for 12 years. Do we know anything about Tiger's personal life. Not that it matters but I'm curious how he's lined up the important things and people in his life.

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

I've done stand up since '91. It's like therapy for me.Tiger is even more private now than before. Wouldn't you be too?

Ed (Long Island)

With everyone saying that Augusta is very tough on first timers, that it takes experience to understand where to hit each shot, why wouldn't a first timer go with an experienced Augusta caddy rather than his own? Seems there could be invaluable knowledge that the Augusta caddy could bring.

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Because it's a team game. The only way for your normal caddie to learn the course like you is to go thru it together. And it's tough to trust a stranger. Or you could do like Webb Simpson and get a tour caddie that has Augusta experience.

Brad (Greenville, SC)

Michael, You ever loop at Augusta? Any unknow caddy traditions that John Q doesn't know about?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

No I haven't and it's one of the things that is making this trip a little tough for me. The only way I wanted to see the course and tournament for the first time was wearing that white jumpsuit. So there's a part of me that is gonna be hurting walking thru that gate this afternoon.

Glenn (Chicago)

Michael, I see the young kids making a run at Augusta this year. Dustin and Hunter in the last group, Tiger and Rory in the next to last. Tiger wins...you thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Tiger/Rory final group, and I'd love Mickelson/Mahan penultimate, then Adam Scott/Westwood next. I don't know that I could contain myself

Bob (Seattle)

Did you take your picture at Kapalua or the Sony?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

If it's the one in the blue polo that was at Arnold Palmer. If it's the one in the white shirt that was in Bristol.

Griffin (Geneseo, NY)

How does one become a member at Augusta National?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

I believe you have to first be invited to join, then there's a process. You don't just walk in and plop down a check. That happens AFTER you're accepted! haha

tim (scotland)

an ex-pat in scotland and I have to hear the brits say that the open championship is the best major in golf. put this case to rest. the masters is the best major because...

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Glad you asked. It's the only one held at the same place. And until they hold the "Open" Championship outside Great Britain, I'll keep calling it the British Open. Just because you're the first doesn't mean you're the best.

Scott (Spokane, WA)

Rory will score a ____ on Amen Corner in his first return on Thursday.

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

par, birdie, par. -1 first time thru the corner!

Paul (Kansas)

What is a typical routine for a player on the Monday and Tuesday before the Masters?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Most guys practice light and only play 9 holes a day. Gearing up for the pressure means staying as light and fresh early as you can.

Tom (L.A.)

Hope weather doesn't come too much into play. Weather affected the Johnson and Immelman Masters and those years were really boring.

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Not to worry, it is NOT going to be cold this week.

Richard (Hilton Head, SC)

Michael, used to loop for Couch too...I like Justin Rose this weekend. Enjoy Augusta. Cheers !!!

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Solid pick. Caddying for Couch was some of the best times on the golf course I've ever had. Cheers

Nick (Augusta)

I'm from Augusta. Go to the Snug Bar and Grill off Davis Rd. It's a great place for steaks (and a great crab dip) and not too well known during the tournament, so it won't be super crowded. Tbonz is WAYYYYY OVERATED!

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

I'm there! Thanks Nick, and if it isn't good... I will come find you and... just kiddin'!

Brett (DC)

Think Keegan Bradley's got a shot to make it 2-for-2 in majors, or is it too much to ask in his first trip to Augusta? He does seem to be at the top of the leader board nearly every week these days.

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

This is the one place that I think it's too much to ask. He'll finish top 30 though.

Steve (Denver)

What's the top-5 this week and in what order?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Check out the home golf page, a bunch of us picked the top 25 in order of how they'll finish!

David Mike (Long Valley, New Jersey)

I just want to say I enjoy your interviews and opionions on golf. There is nothing like a litte humor while interviewing people

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

I appreciate that. Thank you. I talk with them the same way on camera as off camera and most of them enjoy that too.

Glenn (Chicago)

Michael you caddied, does slow play really bother the the tour players (Brian Davis yesterday), it looked like Carl Petterson was bothered by how long he took to hit 2 shots.

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Yeah, when you're in a groove or playing at a good pace and something or someone takes you out of rhythm guys get a bit peeved. But you know the night before if you're gonna be playing with a slow player so you can be mentally ready. The Brian Davis thing was a freak thing on the 18th, he's not a slow player.

James (NY, NY)

I'm surprised that no one's talking about Phil... I think he'll be in the mix... more chance than Luke D.

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

He does have a couple more green jackets than Luke does!

Showtime (Chicago)

First stop - merchandise tent. Buy all your gear early and the ship it home! After that, start on 18 and reverse walk the course (don't walk backwards, just go 18, 17, etc)! Camp out at the tee on 12 for a few groups - you can see 11 green, 12 and 13 tee...best spot on the course. Question - what will Phil do this week? Do you think he'll finish above Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Thanks for the heads up! I drove so I can FILL the car up with merchandise! Check out the golf homepage for my picks.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

Do you think Zach Johnson's prepared for a run at the Master's and how about Weir?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

According to your name I can't answer that question.

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

Honestly though, no and no. Neither will finish inside the top 25.

jimmy v (hampton, sc)

I have been to the masters numerous times, 86 being my first. You have to get a ham and cheese on rye. Since you will have access to the club house, make sure you have their Sunday brunch. It is awesome. The best place to hang out on the course is at 6th and 16th

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Got it!

Kody Miller (Idaho)

Is Tiger still the most talented golfer on tour or have the younger players closed the gap slightly?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

More than slightly, but the question is now when they are all in the mix on Sunday, will they falter like the older golfers used to with Tiger. I say no.

Tom (L.A.)

Do you think Schwartzel can be a regular contender at the Masters and other Slams, or will he be more of the One Slam Wonders like Johnson, Immelman, Glover, Yang, etc?

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

He's still young enough and long enough to be considered a guy who can be a regular contender. I wish they would've let him on he grill for the Champions dinner though. If he wins another one they may have to let him!

jimmy v (hampton, sc)

As a caddie, do you check the weekly forecast for rain, wind changes during the four days and knowing where the pins will be ahead of time to the players practice for the wind changes?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

If we had a 7 am tee time I was awake at 3 am checking three websites for the hourly wind forecast. I would have also made notes in the yardage books from years past of where the pins were. I have most of the pin sheets from the tournaments I've caddied for the past 6 years.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

McIiroy has had 3 weeks off, every pro prepares differently. As a caddie, what do you think is going through the pro's mind on the first tee on Thursday?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Go thru your routine. That's all that should be focused on.

Kody Miller (Idaho)

Rory and Tiger tied going into Amen corner final group on Sunday who wins?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Tiger, and it would be AWESOME to watch!! Birdie on 18 wins. OMG I'd be like a teenage girl at a Justin Beiber concert.

Drake (NYC)

One word. Sergio!

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

One word. No.

Shoshana (Boston)

If Adam Scott wins, I don't think elite tour pro's will ever play regular tournaments again. Then again Steve seems to have this part time caddy gig down pat

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

He's the Australian Bruce Leitzke!

KOSTA (AUSTRALIA)

I think tiger will win by a dominating score.People dont understand what he has gone through, and still climbs out better.Who do you think is his biggest threat?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

This week, McIlroy.

jimmy v (hampton, sc)

why were you in Waynsboro (bird dog capital of the world)? Where you driving from?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Gainesville, FL

Shoshana (Boston)

Enjoy your first masters. The rest of us will be living vicariously through you

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)
