Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Hey everyone. Thanks for joining in. This should be my new day, as I'll be doing Truehoop TV every Tuesday with Henry Abbott. "I just..can't..get..left!!"

Buba (Calgary)

Who do you think will win Survivor? Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I literally have never seen a single minute of that show, ever. Did not know it was still on air. Are they doing a moon version yet? Atlantis?

Jared (Alberta)

Hi David, shouldn't Dwight Howard want Otis Smith fired instead? I'm pretty sure any struggles they have can be laid solely at his feet, not Van Gundy's.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Salient point, Jared.

Pierre (Cow Town.... Moooooooo)

Is Tyreke the worse ROY since Steve Francis?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I liked what I saw from him against Minny. He needs to learn how to play sf and not have the ball in his hands as much.

Kevin Peavley (Bangalore, India)

Hi Mr Thorpe, I'm in India for 3 months for work so I haven't been able to watch my Pacers. Are they destined to be a middle of the pack contender for the next 3-4 years? Unless Paul George is a star....................

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

They are in prime position to make a key acquisition that upgrades them enough to compete with Miami and Chicago.

Andrew (Irvine, CA)

Hi David, love the chats! I heard you say the other day that Kevin Love has the most efficient shooting mechanics you've ever seen. Can you break down what that means exactly?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Yes. He has the simplest mechanic-upper arm parallel to floor, forearm at the proper angle, and then he just lifts it straight up. Less movement is better and faster.

Andrew (SF)

I'm not particularly impressed by Thomas Robinson. Who's his NBA comp, best, worst, and middle-ground?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

I am. He's got great quickness for a man his size. Mobile, aggressive, great attitude. Should be a long term NBA starter. I'll do comps later.

Steve (Indiana)

What do you think of Mark Curban on the TV show "Shark Attack"? I can't get enough of him; I think he's great. Do you know him personally?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I know him and like him. Treats me great. Treats his players great as well. Never seen the show, nor have I heard of it. Is it like Gilligan's Island, only with more sharks?

Dominick (Alabama)

Why do you think Wade is not getting alot of love for the first team NBA?A lot of analysts are talking bout Westbrook and Parker being the two gaurds, however i dont think its even close between parker and Wade

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I think he's one of the top 4 players on earth.

Eric (Hermosa Beach)

Wouldn't Boston be best off losing the Atlantic, getting the 7th seed, and being as fresh as possible for when they have to play Miami?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

No they would not.

John (Okc)

David, for someone who prides himself on player development, you must be applauding the strides the young players at OKC have made. Its a testament to the organization and to the hard work they put in.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Indeed it is. That's the better model for teams to follow when copying the "OKC way".

Carla (NM)

Coach Thorpe - How do you always look so tan? Is it the water you drink? LOL!! Do you buy into the rumors of MJ looking to sell the Bobcats?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I live in Florida, where we play outdoors all year long. Baseball and hoops with my kids! I think yes, MJ would sell for the right deal. But he says otherwise.

Matt (Salem, OR (Land of rain and clouds))

David, kind of a strange question for you. I've noticed that John Henson has an unusually high waist. How does being long-legged affect a basketball player? Or is it totally meaningless?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Great eyes Matt. I speak of this often. High waisted guys tend to develop later. Takes even more time to develop full coordination. It's why I think he can get much better.

Victor (Grand Rapids)

More upside: Derek Favors or Thomas Robinson?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Probably a draw, slight lean to Favors.

a facebook friend (worlwide web)

Coach Thorpe, thanks for your inspiring status updates. I find myself constantly checking your page to read your latest comments. I hope we inspire you as much as you do us.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

You do. Sometimes when I go to sleep I'll spend 5 minutes reading all the updates-helps me remember my tiny little place in this world. I see people in pain, people full of life, and of hope. Makes me want to get rested up and attack the world again when I wake up. I'm at David B. Thorpe on facebook if anyone wants to join our fun.

Andrew (SF)

Do you and Hollinger communicate often?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Probably every few weeks we'll call each other. I read him daily. It's like taking your daily vitamins-everyone should do it.

JB (Hoop City)

How about the improvement of players under the Grizz coaching staff? They're like the island of misfit toys... but it seems to work.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Most underrated staff in basketball.

Jeff (NJ)

I agree on T. Robinson. But Sullinger seems to be trending the other way. If he comes out how much did that Kansas game hurt his stock?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

None to my eyes. He has more all-star potential than anyone in the draft after AD.

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

None to my eyes. He has more all-star potential than anyone in the draft after AD.

Eugene (Long Island)

Hi Coach Thorpe,I'm coaching a 10th grade AAU team. We have an hour fifteen for practices. What are some things I can do to get the most out of the time and help my players not only for the AAU season but for their varsity season as well?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Ballhandling, individual and team defense, finishing shots in the paint, and passing.

clark griswold (london)

big ben...parliament.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Nicely done.

Andrew (Ocilla, GA)

How easy is it to love Kidd-Gilchrist? The guy is a winner. Which team would you like to see grab him and will he be the #2 pick?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Love him. But he's not in my top 5. He could help any team though.

Kyle (Cleveland, OH)

Andre Drummond, Perry Jones, and Harrison Barnes all seem to have a lack of a "motor" according to scouts. How correctable is this?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Very.

Brandon (New York)

What's wrong with the Mavs? They just don't look like the cohesive unit they were last year, especially with their perimeter passing and overall decision making.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Most champs jell late. Just as the Mavs did last year. Give them time, perhaps they still will.

Matt (Toronto)

Wasn't it deflating to see Withey easily defend Sullinger? I mean, that's not Anthony Davis covering him, but Cole Aldrich 2.0!

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

The NBA court is much bigger and more open. In the NBA Sullinger would face him up from 13 feet and blow by him.

Benjamin (Concord)

Is it possible Anthony Davis isn't done growing?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Dammit Benji, I'm a coach and not a doctor.

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

That's a line from "Bones" that he used often with Captain Kirk, I'm not really mad at Ben.

Joey (Laguna Niguel)

Is Isaiah Thomas a serviceable answer for the Kings at PG?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I see him as an excellent pg off the bench. Long time player.

Izzy (New York/Florida)

Mandlebaum! Mandlebaum!

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Thanks for making me smile.

Nick ((Chicago))

Can we all agree DeMarcus Cousins has arrived and he's here to stay? Despite all the stuff that has been said about him, I believe we are witnessing the birth of a superstar. What is happening with miniLeBron Evans?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Very impressed with DC, and he still can grow up a great deal. Seems his heart and his head are in the right place.

Mark (Detroit)

You're Joe Dumars. Would you rather have a) this pretty nice last 30 game record where the team is clearly playing better under Frank, or b) a tanking team going for the ping pong balls?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

No point in tanking. Try to build momentum heading into the offseason.

Jay (MN)

What would be your recommendations to Derrick Williams to work on this offseason? Lose weight to play the 3? Finishing at the rim? Shooting mechanics? The potential is there but he has work to do.

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Read my rook report next week. It's my annual "Rookies and Veterans" piece.

Kaka (Brazil)

Why do you answer questions only from people with an American name?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

You mean why did I used to do that?

Donny (San Francisco)

HEY COACH THORPE!!!!!!!! TRUE OR FALSE: STEVE NASH WILL RETIRE AS A SUN.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

NO IDEA.

Stewart (Phila)

David, it's difficult coming to conclusions about players who are so young, but do you think Holiday is better suited to the 2, and Turner to the 1?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

No and yes.

Joe (Columbus, OH)

Coach, what do you think Tristan Thompson's role going forward will be? Also what improvements can Cavs fans expect in the next year from him?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

He should ultimately be a stating 4 with major impact on offense, defense, and rebounding. We should see improvement next year.

Matt (SLC)

How would you compare MKG (of UK) to Shane Battier (when he was a Rocket)? Don't you think both players are perfect complimentary players?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Very different guys but similar impacts. I'm not sure MKG will be better than Battier was in his orime.

Steven (Atlanta)

I think you are a fraud Thorpasauras. ESPN employs many good writers and reporters, why do they have you? Why do people think you know basketball?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Sorry you feel that way Steve. I'll study harder I promise.

Dan (Brooklyn)

Any thoughts on the emergence of Avery Bradley? It seems to me he could be really good someday. Even though he's still really raw, he's talented, hard working, and plays for a good organization where he can learn from the best (Doc, Rondo, Allen, Pierce).

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

All good thoughts here on AB. Tenacious.

Benjamin (Concord)

On your Battier Kidd-Gilchrist comparison isn't MGK much more athletic and better at finishing at the rim while Battier a much better perimeter shooter? Where's the comp?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Correct. Battier was better in the paint when he was 21, of course. Both do lots of little things well, amazing attitudes and toughness.

Dale (Madison)

David, I follow the NBA closely and watch-listen-read about it as much as I can. Been doing this for over 20 years. I've listened to a hundred coaches and executives speak over the years about basketball, but they've never made as much sense as you do when explaining the game. I find it hard to believe that you don't want to match wits with the other GM's out there.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Thanks Dale. It's my job to make sense, not theirs. Smart GM's don't want to reveal their secrets.

Daniel (NYC)

You like Austin Rivers? I think he's a good scorer with that first step and crossover, but doesn't impact the game elsewhere.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

He can learn how to do lots of things better. His upside is considerable.

Craig (PA)

Did you read Bill Simmon's "Book of Basketball?" Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I did, last year. I found it to be very funny. When he told me he was working on that book a few years ago, I made him mad when I asked him "which Boston team did you pick for the best team ever?", though I thought he defended his choices well. It's clear he is madly in love with the NBA, which makes me smile.

Davide (SC)

Do you love the way Durant and Westbrook are playing together? Are they the best tandem in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

You mean after Bron and Wade?

Benjamin (Concord)

Bradley Beal is a 2-guard right? While his height isn't NBA ideal his length is, allowing him to guard and bother taller players so I don't think defensively he will be as much of a liability as say Eric Gordon

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Agreed.

Jimmy (Fairfax, VA)

What are your thoughts on John Wall's progression this year? He started off poorly but has stepped up his game later this season. Getting rid of the mental cases this year through trades and next year through dumping Blatche and Lewis can only help him, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Right, he is improving. Could be am All-Star in a season or two.

Russ (Cape Cod)

David, I'm a huge fan of yours. Thanks for your expertise. I wish you did more podcasts, which I could listen to while driving to and from work.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Thanks. I think all the podcasts we produce are informative.

Chris (Indy)

when will people stop putting cody zeller on their mock drafts? Everyone that knows anything about college ball knows that Zeller is staying at least one more year at IU

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Is that right?

Zack (Vegas)

Did you buy a lottery ticket?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Not since Florida's first every lottery back in '88 I think. So I'm 0 for 1.

Marlo (CT)

Thorpedo: Do you follow any other basketball websites (e.g. nba.com, hoopshype.com, insidehoops.com, nbadraft.net)? Where do you go for your NBA rumors and info?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I live on all of the espn writers plus Truehoop and the Truehoop network.

Thomas (NYC)

Coach T, quick question. How are you not moving up here to be on tv for espn as often as possible? Your stuff with Abbott is so much more interesting than anything I see on any network regarding basketball. I want an answer.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I've heard I have a face for radio (and apparently podcasts), plus I don't think the average fan would find my insight interesting. Thankfully some do, which is why I'm happy doing what I do. I will be moving up to NYC after my twins leave for college. Me and Mrs. Thorpe have always planned on renting in Manhattan for 4-6 months when the babies leave the nest.

Aaron (Seattle)

Who do you see as potential all-stars from this draft class?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Davis and Sullinger.

Rory (Sacramento)

Do you ever seek to work with a player, or do you just wait for them to request your coaching? Could you work with some of my Kings? Please?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I do not recruit.

Alexander (Texas)

Can you say something good about the Spurs going into the home stretch? It seems ESPN refuses to do so after 8 in a row....

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I think they will win the west. How's that?

Alex (Dallas)

Coach Thorpe - Who's the biggest enigma in this year's draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Drummond.

Pedro (Billings)

Yo yo yo Coach Thorpe. What can you tell me about Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins? Can they co-exist? I'm thinking they'd be one of the most formidable front-courts of all time. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Agreed.

iztok (Slovenia)

Hello from Slovenia Coach! Your thoughts on Dragic.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Agreed. He's a great athlete with lots of courage. Playing in the perfect system for him to shine.

Jeremy H (Minneapolis)

I know you will kill me for this but what about a trade of Kevin Love and Beasley for James Harden and Ibaka....Makes sense for both teams. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

You don't trade someone who has MVP talent.

Jack (Toronto)

Is Andrea Bargnani starting to "get it"? He's finally using his size to his advantage backing people down in the post, rebounding better and Casey even has him playing passable defense. BTW, Casey won't get any nods for CoY but the fact he has the entire team playing decent defense this year is a minor miracle.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Yes and yes.

Joe (Columbus)

Coach, could you elaborate on Jared Sullinger and what you see in his game? I love watching him and supporting the Buckeyes but I think most people just don't see him translating well to the NBA.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

That's because they see how crowded the college game is and forget how open the NBA one is.

Jeff (Ohio)

Coach, did you attend WrestleMania last weekend? Come on, admit it!

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I have not seen wrestling since Harley Race was the champ.

David (St. Louis)

Is it me, or does your opinion on Sullinger differ from most scouts? Not to say he won't be good. But that his upside is limited, according to what I've heard from other NBA sites.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

We are all entitled to our own opinion. If Sullinger goes to the right team, loses 25 more pounds, and gets super hungry, he's an all-star.

Stewart (Phila)

Based on your answer to the Holiday/Turner question, one of them must go. Who?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Maybe it's Lou and Turner comes off bench.

Larry (SLC)

Jazz make the playoffs Corbin is coach of the year? Most of you analysts had them last in the West. And, if he does win it the award should be called the Jerry Sloan Award.

JR (Chicago)

On the topic of Sullinger, if he loses that 25 pounds, he may be a slightly better version of Paul Millsap. They will have very similar skill sets. That probably makes him an All-Star

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Exactly was thinking and he's better in the paint than Paul.

Craig (San Diego)

Better shot blocker in the pros: Anthony Davis or Theo Radcliffe?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Really? Let's just say Davis will be the better overall player.

ken (dc)

Finish this sentence for me: If the pacers land Deron Williams in the offseason they will be____________________.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Really darn good.

TasmanianDevil-43 (charlotte)

coach, thanks for the chats. If the bobcats dont get the first pick who would you select with the second or third pick given their lineup.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

They need help everywhere. Pick the best prospect possible.

Mandy (St. Louis)

Coach Thorpe, I'm a HUGE fan of yours. Have you ever thought of doing play-by-play commentary for ESPN or NBATV? I think you should consider it.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Thanks and no. I've done color many times before, years ago. I'm probably better at this.

Jim C. (Boise, Idaho)

Do you think that Hollinger's formula for rankings might need to be tweaked a bit given that he currently has the Lakers ranked behind the 25-28 Bucks? Not saying it's biased, but maybe it takes recent performance a little too much into account when a team with a losing record that will miss the playoffs is ranked ahead of a 3rd seed team.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

His formula is based on mountains of data.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

That's it for me today. Hope you all had fun. David B. Thorpe on Facebook. @coachthorpe on twitter. Be safe!!
