Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

ESPN Dallas
  (1:03 PM)

Jean-Jacques Taylor will be here in a minute or two to take your questions. Hold tight!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

Y'all ready? Mavs, Cowboys, draft, Rangers, Stars and NCAA tourney are all worthy subjects. Let's roll.

Danny (Houston)

JJT - The boys should just go with best Def Player avail at #14 and not over think this! Im thinking it will be F. Cox, M. Barron, or S. Gilmore - ur thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

As of today, I'd say Barron. He's the guy they've been raving about for months and he fits a position of need even more than Kirkpatrick because he's a starter the minute he arrives at Valley Ranch

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What does the Dallas Cowboys need to address in the 2012 NFL Draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

The best player. NO trade downs. Get they guy YOU want - not the guy left from a pool of 3-4 players

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the Texas Rangers Pitcher will lead the team in Strikeouts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

I'd say Derek Holland. Left-handed. Good velocity with fastball. Excellent slider. Will be tough on lefties. Feliz might have more Ks per 9 innings, but he's going to provide quite a few 5 and 6 inning starts because of pitch count. Darvish might have lead in Ks per 9, but won't match Holland's innings

raul (rio grande city Texas)

JJT, are u high on Emanuel Acho...do you think he would be a good pick up for Dallas at some point in the draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

I don't know enough about him. I'm not a dude who studies the entire draft. I focus on 4-5 guys the Cowboys might take in the first round and a few guys who personally intrigue me for one reason or another. I covered the Cowboys beat for 11 years and had to know every little thing about the draft. Once I become a columnist, I downsized my draft knowledge on purpose

Stu (Beijing)

Is Mark Barron worth the 14th overall pick in the draft

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

Personally, I don't like that line of thinking. Is he worth it TO THE COWBOYS should be the question. Let's say, he is what we think he is going to be: 10-year starter, 4 Pro Bowls. Is that worth the 14th pick, yes

Sean (TX)

If the cowboys select mark barron in the draft will they release gerald?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

nope. He just signed a 5-year deal

brian (nyc)

Whos the better of the two corners, jenkins or carr?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

i assume Carr, but I haven;t seen many Chiefs games over the years

Tyson (Florida)

If Janoris jenkins fall to the 2nd or 3rd round do the cowboys select him because of the value?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:14 PM)

Never. Garrett doesn't like dudes with issues.

jon (south carolina)

Demarco Injury is similar to dez injury last year, so its safe to say he will be back by training camp?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

haven't heard anything to indicate he won't, though you should know that no two players ever heal the same. Everyone's body is different.

naquan (brooklyn)

Whos the next back up tight end?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

John Phillips unless they draft a dude, which they better cause there ain't no way you can run the same offense with Phillips filling in for Witten

jamol (md)

What are guys hearing about dez, is he coming in working hard during the off season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

No idea, been covering the Rangers and Mavs. haven't talked to any Cowboys lately. I do see Dez at the gym once or twice a week, when he's playing ball. Our conversations are usually brief

Jeff (Middletown, Ohio)

Is the Cowboys 2012 starting center currently on the roster?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

Good question. I think they'd like to draft one in the 2-3 round to compete with Costa. Ultimately, I think Costa is a good backup, capable of starting 3-4 games to help a team out when starter is hurt

Joe Faulkner (Midland, TX)

Agree on Barron, but if someone like Cincinnati offered #17 and a second, think Jerry would take it and still get Barron especially with Jets needing OLB and Eagles need OL help. Wouldn't that be a better deal?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

What if the Jets, who like him, move from 18 to 16 to get him? Now, you don't have Barron - the guy you wanted and needed - but you do have an extra 2. Whoopee!!

Karl (ca)

Seems like Rob values the corner position more than the saftey position in his defense. so what corners in the upcoming draft do you think are fits?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

I could see them taking Kirkpatrick or South Carolina Stephen Gilmore in the 1st round

Scott (Albuquerque)

JJT - Who do you think are the top 3 (realistic) choices for the Cowboys at #14?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

Barron, Kirkpatrick or Gilmore, upshaw

Jack (New Haven CT)

First I want to say my prediction of Brees getting franchised was correct, when you said he'd get any deal he wanted. But my question is with all the signings that the Cowboys made, how much have they improved as of now?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

until Brees signs the franchise tender, which he won't do, it doesn't mean much. They need depth everywhere. They've missed playoffs 3 of 4 years

Felipe (Colorado)

JJT... a new column came out last night in an interview with D-Will where he basically talks about being a Net in the past tense and how much Dallas fans on twitter want him to come home. What odds are you thinking Deron is here come July?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

60-40. My experience is athletes follow the money. If the Mavs can pay him the most money, he'll be here. If not, he won't

Mike (San Diego)

JJT, so, is Garrett the leader in the draft's war room? For some reason I thought it was the old, funny looking dude that owns the team.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

No matter what you hear, it has, for the most part, always been a collaboration. Yes, even with Parcells. He wanted Spears at 11 and pouted when he didn't get him, though he liked both players

Danny (Dallas TX)

This may be a little irrelevant now but what happened to Marion Barber?? Performance wise that is.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

old for a RB. It's a physically demanding position and all it takes is to lose a fraction of a second of quickness and you can no longer get through the hole.

Steve (NY)

Simple JJT- If Dallas can net another 2nd by only dropping 2-4 spots back and someone grabs Barron...........then you draft pass rusher!! Bigger need than safety. Secondary can't cover for 10 minutes while it's only Ware getting after the QB AGAIN!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

What pass rusher? You fall into the same flawed thinking I don't like. TAKE THE GUY YOU WANT. Why do you want a fall-back dude. It's never bad - even if it doesn't work out - when you take the guy you want.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

The draft is not about trying to outsmart every other team and GM. It's about getting the guys you want that make your team better

raul (rio grande city Tx)

JJT, I imagine there will be a 3 man race for the starting center Costa/Nagy/Arkin do you think Costa is better suited to play guard?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:32 PM)

Nope. The Cowboys signed their guards in FA. Costa is either going to start at center or be on the bench

MEECH (Ga)

if the redskins let santana moss go, do you think he can be a fit as the 3rd guy?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

I hadn't thought about it because he's still with them. He's spent so much of his career on the outside, I suppose he could play the inside. But they really are 2 different worlds. The action is lot quicker in the slot.

andre phils pa [via mobile]

How much do you think the cowboys have help them selfs during this off season. And do you like the moves

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

I like Carr and Orton probably more than most because backup QB is a key position - even if u hope the dude never plays. We all spend money on life insurance we hope we never need for a long time. I'm taking a wait and see attitude with the rest of the moves, especially since none of them were high profile. I do like the fact Dallas picked out the guys they wanted and got them signed.

Tyson (Florida)

Seeing that the cowboys like selecting guys with injury history do you see ryan broyles or jared crick being an option in the mid rounds?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

sorry bro, I don't study the draft that deep. Just the surface. As a columnist, I have to keep up with the other teams. Something has to give - for me it's the draft after the first round

Brad (houston tx)

The problem with the cowboys is they took an entire draft off in 2009, therefore theres no quality depth on the team. which positions do you think cowboys need get depth at in the draft?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

the need depth virtually everywhere. That's why they just need to draft dudes who can play. The position doesn't much matter

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

I think the Cowboys are potentially one of the handful of big winners of free agency this year in the sense that they put themselves in a position to consistently draft the best players available at all the positions they needed to fill, mostly because they acquired either sure starters or players that will challenge the draft picks for starter spots this year throughout free agency....your thoughts/

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

i'd agree with that

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

What are your top 3 concerns about the Mavs? Mine are no one wanting to own the spot of being the 3rd option behind Dirk and JET, lack of hustle from game-to-game, and lack of disgust following the games they lose

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

Those seem to be emotional concerns. You should focus more on the reality of the situation: 1) they're old with 8 players over 30 and this condensed schedule has taken a significant toll on them physically; 2) they shoot too many 3s because only VInce Carter and Roddy B like to drive the ball and neither does it as much as they should or could; 3) they're a poor rebounding team, which gives their opponents too many possessions

Willow (Southside)

What sort of business plan would you like to bring to Mark Cuban and the rest of the panel on SharkTank?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

hadn't thought about it. I didn't want to be an editor because I didn't like being responsible for other people. I like doing my thing

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

I wouldn't do it, and I would prefer he wouldn't do it, but his teammates say it's Jet being Jet, so I wouldn't say it's really a big deal

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:45 PM)

Probably the Spurs because they have no fear whatsoever of playing the Mavs. The Thunder is better, but they probably still fear the Mavs' ability to win after losing most of the game

Rick (TX)

Number one problem for the Mavs: they're always quick with excuses. X games in Y days, injury this, contract that. When the Mavs learn that nobody cares about their problems, I think they'll turn a corner. Your thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

it's not an excuse. It's reality. Jason Kidd is out for 4 games because he's physically broken down from the condensed schedule. That's why they're just trying to make it to the postseason, when they'll have 1-2 days off between games. The problem is they might not make the playoffs. And if they do, they might get Spurs or OKC in the first round

jay (ny)

will the cowboys have a new nike jersey?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

Yes, and it looks just like the old one except for the Nike swoosh. You can't mess with a classic uni

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)
