Chat with Carter Strickland

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Texas Longhorns will play in the 2012 College World Series in Omaha?

Carter Strickland
  (3:01 PM)

Hmm, they are doing a ton better right now. That sweep of OU was big. I'm not sure they have enough quality depth to make it all the way to Omaha. But Augie has a way of making the most out of what he has.My guess is right now they have a 30 percent chance. That goes way up if they put themselves in a position to host a super regional

John McCrary (Willis, TX)

If my counting is correct that is 21 scholarships handed out so far by Texas does that mean they are no longer pursuing another TE and unless one of the two in state dbs do not commit not another db will be offered? Basically they have offered everyone they want and wont offer anyone else unless someone doesnt choose texas.

Carter Strickland
  (3:02 PM)

Trent Gow might be the right end. Don't expect all 21 of those offers to be accepted. Vonn Bell, for instance, might be a guy that stays n the SEC. Plus Texas may bring in 22 guys depending on the attrition rate from this year's team.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

What would it mean for Texas to get Maurice Smith and Antwan Davis??

Carter Strickland
  (3:04 PM)

That they finally have some DBs. Both are quality players that fit the mold Akina wants, guys who have multiple skills and hands. Now they are going to try and sign three DBs so the other might be Vonn Bell or they still have an outside shot at Harris. Luke is hanging around but it is not a good sign that he did not get offered.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

What 3 2012 recruits do you see coming in and competing for a "Two-Deep" position and get early PT?

Carter Strickland
  (3:06 PM)

Timely questions as I'm doing a story on the two deeps over the next two days on the hornsnation site. On offense I like all four wide receivers to play. Daje may not be a traditional wide receiver but could be a return guy or a guy like Monroe. I also like Gray, of course. That is it for that side of the ball.On defense, Duke Thomas is probably going to get some time. At linebacker Dalton Santos is going to get a hard look as are the other LBs. On the line Brown and Davis will also assuredly play.

ron king (oklahoma)

so is joe bergeron gonna be the starter........or is starting even gonna matter if everyone is gonna share carries........

Carter Strickland
  (3:06 PM)

I think Bergeron will be the starter. The thing about Joe is he can really get in his groove quickly and if he does look for him to pound it the first three series. Then they will come with Gray or Brown.

harold (texas)

how good is demarco cobbs?...... why wouldnt they put dj monroe to handle wildcat duties he seems like a good fit to me

Carter Strickland
  (3:08 PM)

Cobbs has excellent speed and is a great blitzing linebacker. Now what he has to be careful of is going too fast in one direction and getting out of position. But maturity and experience should take care of that issue.Monroe has terrible hands and they cannot rely on him to cleanly get the snap from center on the shotgun snap.

Jon Austin [via mobile]

The good, the bad, and the ugly from the spring game? Quarterback situation still looks iffy at best, sadly.

Carter Strickland
  (3:09 PM)

Good : ash's touch pass in the end zone to Shipley.Bad: Depth issues on offense and defense. Linebackers are very thin.Ugly: McCoy's four passes, two that were picked and two that should have been picked. Had Texas been playing in a live game with McCoy at QB they would have lost because of those turnovers.

Grecian (Houston, TX)

What happens first: Durant wins an NBA championship or Texas wins a national championship (football)?

Carter Strickland
  (3:11 PM)

Durant. I like OKC's chances this year. The Heat are really having a hard time scoring the ball. OKC has no trouble putting the ball in the basket. I know it is all about defense in the playoffs. But the pressure is going to be on the Heat and we saw how well LeBron did under the pressure last year.

David (Colorado)

What's your take on the two in-state cb offers and where does this leave Luke?

Carter Strickland
  (3:12 PM)

The thing about Luke is, he comes all this way for the spring game and doesn't get an offer. So let's say Texas whiffs on everybody and now has to go back to Luke. No way he listens to them now. So my guess is Luke will end up somewhere else.

ADRIAN 25 (RIO GRANDE CITY,TX)

WILL LUKE COLE GET OFFERED? IF SO WILL HE SIGN, HOW BOUT SMITH AND DAVIS JUST HEARD THEY GOT OFFERED WILL THEY COMMIT SOON?

Carter Strickland
  (3:13 PM)

First off ease off that caps lock key. Secondly Luke did not get an offer so I highly doubt that he will be a Longhorn. The chances of Smith and Davis committing are very good but both want to look around a little bit first. They have some visits planned and want to take them.

ADRIAN 25 (RIO GRANDE CITY,TX)

WHY HAS TEXAS NOT SETTLED ON A STARTING QB IF ALL I HERE IS ASH GETTING A LOT OF REPS WITH THE FIRST TEAM.

Carter Strickland
  (3:14 PM)

The coaching staff is being too timid and needs to make a decision. Ash is clearly the guy but they are afraid to put everything on his shoulders so they keep saying it is a two-man race. Bad move in my mind.

Dave (MD)

Do you think Ryan Tannehill should be a first round draft choice? He put up some good numbers on some lousy defenses, but every time he played a good D (like Texas these past two years, LSU, Nebraska), he was pretty average. And now, there's a possibility Cleveland may pick him to supplant McCoy because Tannehill can throw accurately on the run? Well, doesn't Colt do that too?

Carter Strickland
  (3:15 PM)

It's crazy to think that Tannehill could go as high as that after starting his career as a wide receiver. Here is the thing: He is a terrible decision maker as everyone saw in the UT game. But he has the arm and the potential is there. The NFL is all about potential. Sometimes these teams think they can get a guy who has raw potential and mold him into a QB. With Tannehill that is the case.

michael (san antonio)

will cole luke get offer

Carter Strickland
  (3:17 PM)

Not at this time. I think Texas wants to wait and see what happens with Smith and Davis and Bell.

Mark (Austin, TX)

Who is the best QB on Texas's roster?

Carter Strickland
  (3:18 PM)

I like the way Brewer can throw on the move but did not get to see enough of him Sunday to make an accurate read on his overall ability. So I have to go with Ash.

zaid (Houston)

What are Jcovan's draft chances?...does he stick with an NBA team?

Carter Strickland
  (3:18 PM)

I don't think he will get picked. I think he gets a free agent deal, plays in the d league some, goes through some 10-day contracts and winds up overseas playing.

Evan (union)

Even gundy is announcing his starter soon. However, do you think the players already know who their leader is going to be? Hopefully they're more excited about ash than gg because that was terrible last year.

Carter Strickland
  (3:20 PM)

I think the players do know that Ash is the guy. That is why it is so stupid for the coaches not to come out and throw their support behind Ash. Listen the guy needs every bit of help he can get when it comes to leading this team in the summer. So the coaching staff needs to come out and say ''Hey he is your leader, you follow him. He is the guy we believe in." They are making a mistake by not doing that.

Austin (Houston)

What is the order behind Mike Davis & Shipley on the wide reciever depth chart ?

Carter Strickland
  (3:22 PM)

Don't forget about Goodwin. Those three are going to catch 30-50 balls each. Now behind that I like Harris to be a part of things. And then the freshmen. Watch out for Cayleb Jones. He has been hanging around all spring, watching every practice. I'm not sold on Hales. Anyone can do it in spring. Show me something in the fall and then I will be a believer.

michael (san antonio)

bell, harris, or miles last db spot

Carter Strickland
  (3:23 PM)

I think so and bell and Harris are going to be tough to get because of where they live. Both are SEC country guys and it is hard to grab those players from those schools.

Austin (Houston)

What is the deal with the Demarcus Holland offer ? I can't find anything about him and no footage on youtube, Rivals list him as a two star and it seems pretty random ..

Carter Strickland
  (3:25 PM)

Totally random because the guy is a 6-3 shooting guard. Texas doesn't need that really. They must see something explosive in his game. What Texas needs is a finisher. Maybe he goes hard to the rim and can create and that is why he is getting some love from UT. Texas might also be getting a backup in case Pollard falls through. Although they play different positions.

michael (san antonio)

should texas offer vincent taylor or wait on manning

Carter Strickland
  (3:27 PM)

I think you might see something with Taylor in the very near future. Very near.

Evan (union)

Think Mykkele will be the next great Texas safety? He looks great on special teams. Outside Gray and Brown, who do you think will contribute most as a freshman this year?

Carter Strickland
  (3:28 PM)

Shiro Davis and one of the wide receivers.I like Mykkele because of his speed. Haven;t seen him really hit anyone yet though.

michael (san antonio)

will texas offer anymore de or lb

Carter Strickland
  (3:30 PM)

Read what I wrote about Taylor a few questions ago. And on LBs I think at this point they are standing firm with the two they have. Maybe Wade gets an offer late if Texas has the room.

Patrick (Austin)

Let's say Texas plays to their best potential this season.. How many games can they win? and are we talking another trip to the Holiday bowl or Cotton/BCS bowl?

Carter Strickland
  (3:31 PM)

I'm saying the over/under on wins this year is 9. Now i think they can win 10 games if they play to their potential. I'm not sure about beating KSU at KSU in December. And the RRR is going to be a tough one unless Texas controls the ball on the ground.

Evan (union)

Cotton bowl vs the Aggies!

Carter Strickland
  (3:32 PM)

That could certainly happen and you know the Cotton Bowl folks would love it. But I don;t think the Aggies are going to have enough wins to be considered this year. They have a rough schedule.
