Who is ready to get this party started?
This notion of moving Colon inside to R gaurd has been going on for some time know. I would have to think he would go to the L side for pulling and trap plays. Foster has been avg at R guard but lacks foot speed and overall ability, to b moved to the L. Thoughts??
Well, I would say that LG is the bigger need than RG, but Colon is better in protection than he is as a run blocker. RG is often isolated one on one in protection against a 3 Technique. I would think Foster could move to LG as well.
I heard you on ESPN radio in Houston this week - Good Job! How many more pieces (players) will it take in Draft (or otherwise) to get Dallas' Def back to contender level?
A safety (Barron) could go a long way. Another CB wouldn't be a bad idea either, but I think that would be a 3rd roundish draft priority for me if I was in charge of Dallas. On the DL, I want to see one major addition-a potential difference maker. Cox would be great, but Poe or Brockers might do the trick.
Is Melvin Ingram a Top 10 lock?
No, but I said on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL) last night that these are the guys that I expect to go in the top 10 in no particular order: Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Richardson, Blackmon, Floyd, Kalil, Claiborne, Cox, Ingram...feel pretty strong about that too. Maybe Coples could go
Lions need a CB in a bad way (Jenkins, Fitzpatrick, Gilmore). I also think that OL needs reinforced with a few young bodies.
Do Tracy Porter and Mike Adams improve the Denver secondary enough to be even league average?
Yeah maybe-esp if a young Safety steps up in Year 2. Plus, their pass rush is quite strong-which obviously helps. League average sounds about right.
If Browns could walk out of the first two rounds of thedraft with Richardson, Hill-WR and Massie - RT, would national reporters consider that a great start to fixing the offense forthe Browns?
There would still be a big hole at QB, but that might have to be next year's project. No matter what, this O will not be fixed in one offseason. I kinda like Wright better than Hill for the Browns with their 2nd 1st rounder. I also have a hunch that Weeden ends up in CLEV
What are some options at right tackle for the Redskins now that Bell is not available? I don't like going into the season with Jammal Brown as the only option, given the questions on his health.
Yeah, I don't blame you at all. Good observation. Maybe M McNeal or Pashos. It's not like the Skins have draft picks to get a lot of impact in the draft.
Bunkley, Grubbs, Lofton, now Hawthorne...where are the Saints finding all this cap room MDub? Great moves but how about locking up their QB?
Along with Colston! I feel ya Bro...couldn't have said it better myself.
Do you think Brockers can develop into a plus pass rusher? Any chance Cox falls to the Cowboys?
Again, I think Cox is a Top 10 guy. So versatile. Maybe it would be worth it for Dallas to move up a few spots for him. As for Brockers, he has a lot of work to do as a pass rusher for sure, but he is still a puppy.
Flacco says he's the best QB. Do you put in the Top 5, Top 10, Top Half, or Bottom Half?
Not number 1! Outside the Top 10 too. Prob in the 10-15 range
M-Dub, it looks like the Eagles signed Demetrius Bell. What do you make of there LT concerns now? Will it be OK?
Big fan of Bell-shocked it took him so long to get signed. He isn't J Peters, but he is an above average LT who should continue to get better-plus, he will be coached well in Philly. But the Eagles now have a TON invested at OG & OT. The way I see it, Reid and company are worried about their jobs and need to win now.
Where does Burfict come off the board?
Suspension aside, I think Cotchery is a better fit for the Rams than Simpson. Thoughts?
Much more reliable. I like Cotchery quite a bit-as a 3rd WR. But Simpson can be a big time weapon. Still has a ton of ability-we just only see it here and there.
Given that Bruce Campbell hasn't shown much to date and is poor fit for Oakland's zone scheme wasn't acquiring Goodson a decent deal for the Raiders?
No question. Considering their cap problems, they weren't bringing Bush back. But they still REALLY need a backup for McF, who is obviously very injury prone.
See any JPP types this year? 2nd year guys who looked good but are ready to become great?
No. Overall, I don't really like this crop of pass rushers. They all have some hole in their game.
Matt, I see Tampa Bay taking Claiborne with #5, because there are other quality RBs available early in Rd 2 (LaMichael James?). Do you think this is the best scenario for them, or would they be better off taking Richardson and finding DB help later on?
I actually think Richardson goes 4th to CLEV, but that is a REAL tough call for me for TBay. I guess I go with Claiborne. Still a need position for sure.
Is Shea McClellin from Boise a reach at 28 for GBay? Will he be there for them in the 2nd? Would love his motor opposite Clay Matthews
He will not be there for GBAY's 2nd round pick and I wouldn't kill them for using their first rounder on him. Wouldn't shock me if NEng is thinking the same thing.
Does Morris Claiborne's Wonderlic 4 mean anything to you?
I have taken the test. Getting anything under a 10 is worrisome. Getting a 4 is downright frightening-he has been in college for three years! But...that doesn't mean he can't cover #1 WRs in the NFL. If he played another position, I would be much more concerned. But I still take him in the Top 5 and tell him to lock down the opponent's best WR.
Hightower to the Steelers? Or do you think the Best Player at the time will be OL?
Mixed feelings. Some of the time when I watched Hightower last year I wasn't impressed, but he was playing with injury. He has supposedly moved great in these pre-draft environments, so maybe that is who he truly is. My other question is if he can play on 3rd down. He skill set looks like a very good complement to Timmons, but if he is just an early down player, I wouldn't use a 1st rounder on him.
Receiver or corner in the second round for the Vikings? Assuming Kalil is the pick and they don't trade with a team looking for Tannehill.
I am going with the assumption that Kalil goes 3rd to Vikes-as he should! But the Vikes are then not hurting for needs after that. Will be a quality WR (R Randle maybe) or DB (Smith from ND comes to mind)...either works
You think Jerry Reese switches gears from the usual positions NYG takes in Round 1 (DE, DB, WR) and tabs Lamar Miller or Doug Martin at 32?
He could. RB is a really big concern right now. Maybe trade down a few spots, esp if Richardson is the only RB off the board when pick #32 rolls around. It would be an uncharacteristic move, but a logical one.
Is Ryan Broyles worth Dallas' third rounder? Would he last till round 4?
If healthy, sure. But I really can't comment-don't know how far along in his rehab he really is. Would need to bring him in for a visit and have team docs really work him over.
With the Chiefs filling most needs through free agency, where do you see them going in the draft?
They are in a good position. I think they would love to see DeCastro, Tannehill or Kuechly fall their way. Maybe Poe
Thank you Aggie! I feel like Broyles would be awesome in the slot.
Perfect spot for him. Plus, in Dallas, they could afford to wait a bit while he heals.
Who will be wearing Seattle's new digs after pick #12? Im thinking DeCastro, Kuechly, or Coples.
Hawthorne signing in NO makes LB a bigger need than before. I am with you on those picks. Maybe Perry.
Let's say Richardson is sitting there at 5 for TB. Would you make him an every down back and trade Blount? LaGarrette doesn't seem to want to have a split role, and we all know what happens when he gets angry...
Again, for TBay, I would prob take Claiborne over Richardson (barely), but if Richardson is the pick, yes he becomes #1 and a WAY better 3rd down option than Blount. But how much do you get for Blount in trade? Prob not enough to move him and he doesn't make huge money.
McNabbbs assesmet of RGIII to Rdskins ,somewhat founded or just BEP(Bitter ex player)?
I couldn't agree with McNabb less. RG3 is a perfect fit for Shanny's offense in my opinion
Can't wait to see what Coach Spag does with Cam Jordan this year.
Good call. I loved Jordan at this time last year. Still have high hopes. Certainly think he will get reps inside on throwing downs. NO needs to find one more edge pass rusher....maybe it is Romeus.
Dolphins fan here hoping that Tannehill falls to #8 - do you think there are teams inclined to trade with JAC at #7 to get him in front of the Dolphins (KC, Buf, Cle from #22)?
Could happen-or he could go 4th overall. Not sure that KC or BUFF trades up for him, but I bet they strongly consider taking him if he falls. It is VERY unCleveland like, but what a great move it would be to draft Richardson and then put a big time package together to move up for Tannehill.
What do you think the Bills do with the #10 pick? It seems to early to draft Reiff
I agree, but that would be the fall back option. Floyd or Tannehill would be excellent. Kuechly?
Do you think Tannehill is a bona fide starter prospect?
Yes. Is he a sure thing? No. But I think they way you described him was perfect.
Matt, it's been rough being a Saints fan. Give us some hope. With the LB upgrade and Spags, any hope for a decent Saint D this year?
I do expect the Saints D to be improved. It isn't very deep, but they did upgrade at LB in a big way and also at DT.
Several mock drafts have Fleener falling to Indy at #34, which I find hard to believe. Your thoughts?
A lot of teams from the 2nd half of round 1 could sure use him. I would say Indy's 2nd rounder is about as low as he could fall, but that would be PERFECT for Luck! Bet Harbaugh likes him though...
Agreed Buddy Nix seems like a BPA guy and I could seee them going with Kuechly
D could be awfully good
Wouldn't it be best for DAL to trade back in round one? They can consider any of 5 different players on their board at the time they pick.
Maybe. I put some Dallas options earlier, but I wouldn't trade down TOO far.
Kendall Wright a fit for NE to play opposite Lloyd at the end of round 1?
Sure, but the Pats now have a ridiculous # of WRs on their roster after going crazy at the position during free agency.
If Bucs take Claiborne at 5, who do they target in round 2? LaMichael James? A LB?
James would be a great RB to complement Blount-but still not sure either could pick up the blitz. Martin might be better. LB certainly would be a need.
What do you see happening with the LB situation in Tampa? Will the starters be addressed in the draft? Any FAs out there still worth signing?
For as aggressive as TBay was, I was shocked/critical of them for not landing Lofton or Hawthorne. I think they will regret it.
Aside from pass rush, what are other positions the Saints need to improve? OL, WR, maybe some depth at defensive positions?
Assuming Brees is there, Saints roster is quite strong. Seems like they need depth everywhere though (besides RB) and yes, a real pass rusher would be superb.
First Raiders draft without Al Davis in a long time. What can we expect from Reggie McKenzie?
Hard to say since McKenzie has never been in charge of a draft-and the Raiders have no picks! But I would assume that he takes a much more Packers-like approach to scouting players (value film more than Combine/speed) than the Raiders have of late.
Dallas needs someone like Barron, Matt. Someone who can be a leader of the Defense. Ware is the leader just by default since he's the best player.
I tend to agree. Of all those names I mentioned earlier, he would be the guy I want. Comes from a winner-knows what it takes. Leader.
From an X's and O's standoint, how does Hawthorne fit into NO's DEF scheme? He was a MLB in Seattle, but that spot is surely occupied by Lofton in NO. OLB in a 43?
Hawthorne is versatile enough for OLB. Better at MLB in my opinion, but I also think Hawthorne is a better Passing Downs LB than Lofton.
Regarding your comment about TB not landing Lofton or Hawthorne. Does that mean you are not impressed with Foster?
Liked him a year ago and I do think he deserves another chance-esp considering he didn't have mini camps, etc. But wow, was he bad for the majority of last season. And maybe OLB better fits him.
Derek Wolfe will be the best 3-4 DE from this class, True or False?
Real good football player that a lot of teams would really like to have, but Brockers to me is that guy.
is alan branch a demarcus ware type?
Yes, but a very poor man's Ware. Ware is going to the Hall of Fame.
WHo is the better LB prospect for TB? L. David or Zack Brown? Thanks
Both are WLB types, but I very much prefer David over Brown
Denver's draft needs? Think they would go after Fleener for another weapon for Peyton?
No. Signed two good TEs and drafted 2 last year. DT is their biggest need right now. Helping the secondary also makes sense-same with the OL. One more WR (Wright?) would certainly make #18 happy. And they do need a
If the Bears go DE at #19, who is the best fit/best guy available for them?
Mercillus, but there are a few guys like Perry that make sense. And you have to remember, they still do have Izzy to help the transition for a DE Rook
where will andre carter play next season?
His quad is still an issue apparently. He would be a great fit for the Bears. Has to go to a 4-3 team, but I was very impressed with Carter in NEng. Assuming he gets healthy quick, he will have a substantial market
Do you see Bruce Arians going with the 4-5 WR sets he used in Pitts. or will he more likely go to a lot of 2 TE sets to help protect his prize QB while learning the NFL ?
He used a TON of 2 TE sets in PGH and surely wants to do that going forward. Maybe they move up a few spots for Fleener. But either way-right now, the Colts are still super weak at WR and TE. Would be putting some bad players on the field.
What's up with London Fletcher? Skins can't let him get away can they?
Blown away that he isn't signed. Makes me wonder if he and the Skins have a handshake deal of some sort-never even hear of him making visits. Fletcher was excellent last year. Pure 4-3 MLB
Would you be shocked if the Giants drafted Stephen Hill?
Yes, because it would cost them their first round pick. RB, OL and MLB are just much bigger needs
After having LT with the Giants and getting beat by the Giants insane stable of pass rushers twice in the super bowl why doesn't Bill Belichick draft more pass rushers with all those draft picks he stock piles? It makes no sense!
Don't we all say this every year? And I very much agree with you. However, I have noticed that NEng wins the AFC East every year, gets to 12ish wins every year and goes to the Super Bowl with regularity...they are doing something right.
Who is the second RB off the board?
I have no idea. Can't figure that one out myself. I do think it is a true 3 horse race.
Is there that big of a gap between Floyd and Blackmon?
Matt, do you feel there's any chance Brockers falls to #35 in the second round to be picked up by the Vikings (as a replacement for Pat Williams)?
No chance. And he really isn't that type of DT/NT
The hoodie is a hoarder of draft picks.
That is undeniable. That made more sense under the former labor agreement though, where 1st rounders just got far too much money.
Bigger need for the Skins, secondary or o-linemen? Who do you see them taking a look at in early round three?
One thing about Shanny, he can manufacture good OL play from cast offs. But I still think the OL is the biggest weakness right now.
are the trade down talks for cleveland over with i hope so because i want them takeing Richardson at 4 your thoughts?
CLEV always trades down. That needs to stop. They need star power and difference makers. I would take Richardson, but I wouldn't kill them for taking Tannehill-would understand it
I would be appauled if Spielman doesn't take Kalil. Isn't it true that you can find viable CB's later vs. trying to find a stud LT?
Exactly. Well said. Should be decent CBs in the top 3 rounds. MUST take Kalil and I will attack the Vikes if they don't. Not a knock on Claiborne, but you take the LT-esp one year after drafting your QB.
Am I crazy for liking Tannehill more than RG3?
Yup. You are.
Is Demaryius Thomas a number one reciever?
No. But I don't throw that term around as much as most. I like his ability a lot and think he has progressed well, but I actually worry about him in some ways with Manning. I know that sounds nuts, but Manning has never had a big physical WR (who is very much still developing as a precise route runner). That Indy O has been predicated on small shifty explosive WRs who run tight routes-Peyton knows exactly where they will be. That isn't Thomas.
How does Tannehill compare to Henne when Henne was coming out of College? Just interested with all the speculation of Tannehill to Miami.
Very different. Henne was very experienced. Tannehill isn't at all-raw. Both can really sling it, but Henne is a statue and a pure pocket passer while Tannehill is a superb athlete with great movement skills.
Matt, given your comments to Jeff (Mpls), might it make most sense for the Vikings to draft Kalil first, the best WR available in the second round, and the best available CB in the third round? All 3 of those players could likely start on Opening Day for that team...
They might. I would take Kalil-no questions asked there. But the Vikes sure have needs. They have big needs at S, CB and WR. I would not pigeon hole myself to say that WR needs to come 2nd. Just take the best DB or WR available when that 2nd pick rolls around. That team can't afford to reach right now.
Must be noted about Tannehill's 40 time, he didn't attend any speed camps due to his broken foot.
Good point and honestly, I don't care what the stopwatch said that day. We was a very effective WR at a major college. He can really run for an NFL QB-no doubt
Who are the best pass rushing 4-3 DT's in the draft?
Cox, by far...big reason I think he ends up in Top 10
Folks, that is a wrap for me. Great chat today. See ya next week. Drop me a line on Twitter
