Chat with Mel Kiper

Mel Kiper
  (1:02 PM)

The first two rounds of my next mock draft are up now and the third round will go up early next week.

carlos (elpaso)

How big is ryan Tannehill upside because he was a late 1st early second at one point???

Mel Kiper
  (1:03 PM)

He's a top 8 pick. He will go to Miami at 8 or Cleveland. I don't think they'll pick him at 4, but they might be able to use that 22nd pick to move back into the first round. But if he goes 8 to Miami, I think he'll be overdrafted. I have him at 18 on my Big Board.

brian (mass)

do you think claiborne wonderlic test hurt him at all?

Mel Kiper
  (1:04 PM)

No. He's a CB not a QB. That's a big difference. If he were a QB, that would be a huge issue. His instincts, his ball skills, his anticipation, awareness in coverage is outstanding. He has the exact skill set you'd need to be a good CB.

peterock (longisland)

Whats the deal with Quinton Coples, it seems like he's starting to fall out of the top ten

Mel Kiper
  (1:05 PM)

He didn't have a good start to the season. Even when he came back, he wasn't putting up big numbers. You can have a sack per game, but that's not the whole story. There are 60 minutes to the game. He has talent, but it's not Julius Peppers talent. If he can become more consistent, he can be a very good player, but there's some boom or bust there. That's why I think Ingram will be the first DE taken.

steve (california)

Who are some of the better passrushing defensive tackles in the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:07 PM)

Derek Wolfe is the most underrated DT in the draft. He's the perfect 3-4 DE or he could be a penetrating 4-3 DT. Brockers has a chance to be a good pass rusher. Fletcher Cox from Mississippi State. Those are the guys. But Wolfe is the most underrated.

Ken (Anaheim)

Mel, Say the Rams don't get Blackmon, who's the best fit for the Rams?

Mel Kiper
  (1:08 PM)

It depends who is there. I think Blackmon could be there. If Richardson goes to Cleveland at 4, then they can get Blackmon. If Blackmon's gone, they could get Richardson. They'll either get Richardson, Blackmon or Claiborne.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think that the Giants will select with their first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:09 PM)

They brought in Martellus Bennett. He's not as good of a pass catching TE as I would prefer. I would go after Coby Fleener. You can flank him out wide. There's nothing wrong with having two TEs. Look at the New England Patriots. Fleener can be outstanding catching the football.

Mel Kiper
  (1:10 PM)

That's interesting because you would have a Stanford player at the first and last pick of the first round.

Ned (NYC)

Can the Jets get a starting rt in the 2nd round? How good is that Missouri rt?

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

I have the Jets picking, at 47, Bobby Massie, OT from Ole Miss. He's a very good RT prospect. They beat Alabama at Ole Miss to get him. He'd be a good upgrade.

Nate (Sacramento, CA)

How worried should teams be about Mark Barrons durability?

Mel Kiper
  (1:12 PM)

No, he's fine. He had the hernia. It's over and done with. There are no concerns. He's going no later than 16 to the Jets. He could to Dallas at 14, Philadelphia at 15 or the Jets at 16.

Chad (OKC)

Mel, Is there any way that Cordy Glenn slips to the niners at 30? Or could they trade up for him?

Mel Kiper
  (1:13 PM)

No, he's not getting down to 30. For the 49ers the main thing is to get a OG. They lost one in free agency. Brandon Brooks could be a good second round pick. At the end of the first round, a WR would help. Glenn, I have, going 22 to Cleveland.

jae (wv)

What round is Alshon Jeffery going in?

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

I think anywhere from late second to early third. Right now I have him as the first pick of the third round to the Colts. You could look at him at No. 50 to Chicago. Baltimore at pick 60. SF at 61.

Johan (Minnesota)

With the Vikings taking Kalil 1st. What would be their best choice in 2nd WR,CB or Safety?

Mel Kiper
  (1:16 PM)

They could take a safety like Harrison Smith out of Notre Dame. Janoris Jenkins. I think they might end up with Smith. Josh Robinson from Central Florida.

Benny (Jerz)

Are there major differences in blackmon and floyd?

Mel Kiper
  (1:17 PM)

The main thing is size. You think about Blackmon, he's not as big as Floyd. But he wants the ball at crunch time. Floyd runs a 4.45. Blackmon runs a 4.49. Floyd has the better measurables, but Blackmon has the want-to. I have very high grades on both of them. I'm rolling the dice that Floyd maximizes his play in the NFL.

Vlad (Houston)

Who should the Texans pick at 26 if they are both still left on the board: Hill from GT or Wright from BU?

Mel Kiper
  (1:19 PM)

I would take Wright over Hill. I gave Wright a 9.1 grade and Hill a 8.8. Hill is coming out of an offense where they predominantly run the ball. I give Wright the slight edge.

Marvin (Ny)

Will Lamar Miller be anymore than just a felix jones in the league or can he carry big load?

Mel Kiper
  (1:21 PM)

I think he has to prove his durability in the NFL. He has a ton of talent. He would be right behind Richardson as a pure RB. I love the way he sets up his blockers. He has speed. He's bigger than you think. He's been a good kickoff returner. What he has to do is be a better receiver out of the backfield. But these days, there are no more work horse backs.

Austyn (Ohio)

Will the Patriots take a LB and two DB with 3 of there 4 first 4 picks and what are the chances of the Patriots trading one of their first round picks again?

Mel Kiper
  (1:23 PM)

They could move them around, but you can't get too cute. It's nice to parlay picks into more picks. But don't get too cute. Don't think you have to do that. You can't pass on Clay Matthews like they did a few years ago. Shea McClellan is who I think they take at 27. Derrek Wolfe at 31. In the second round, pick 48, Josh Robinson. Then in the late second, maybe Amini Silatolu at OG.

Mel Kiper
  (1:23 PM)

Chris Givens, WR in the third.

John (Wisconsin)

which 'tweeners' do you like best at OLB between Andre Branch, Whitney Mercilus, Nick Perry & Vinny Curry?

Mel Kiper
  (1:25 PM)

Mercilus, Branch, Perry, Curry. All four of those guys could end up playing on their feet. I have Mercilus going to Chicago at 19. Branch going to Miami at 42. Perry going to Green Bay in the late first. Curry going 52 to Tennessee.

raul (rio grande)

Do you think Brockers makes a difference at DE for the 'Boys at 14?

Mel Kiper
  (1:26 PM)

Yeah, I do. I think he is a difference maker. He needs coaching. He's a young football player. He has a chance to be a good player. He has to learn to change direction a little better. He has talent. He has a lot of upside. Brockers could go between 14 and 25.

Dr. H. Doofenshmirtz (Tri-State Area)

Poe get drafted behind Cox and Brockers?

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

No. I think he goes ahead of those two. He's a different kind of player. He's a space eater. He can penetrate. He didn't have a lot of tackles, but he had some plays behind the line of scrimmage. He's a space eater. He's not the player like Haloti Ngata. He could be the first DT drafted.

E-Money (Ga)

Can Ryan Broyles become a potential steal in the mid to late rounds?

Mel Kiper
  (1:29 PM)

I think he is the kind of guy that will go in the third round. He is coming ack from the injury. If he could go to Cincinnati, Miami, Jets in the third round, he'll be a real good pick for somebody. If he didn't have the injury, he'd be a second round draft choice.

Wyattjustin (Seattle)

Do you see the Hawks moving down in the first round? What type of value would they get for moving from the 12th pick to somewhere in the 20's?

Mel Kiper
  (1:32 PM)

It depends who they want. Could they move down? They could. But they could also look at a DE like Coples. They need LB help. Luke Kuechly would be a good pick. I could see them using multiple picks on LBs. If they're looking at 2nd round LB, they could look at David, Ronnell Lewis, Zach Brown. If David's there, that would be a steal. Mychal Kendricks is a versatile guy. But they need help at LB.

J (NY)

Do you really think the Jets would consider Barron? Isn't he clone of Landry, who they just signed to be their SS?

Mel Kiper
  (1:33 PM)

Yeah, they would. Barron is a heckuva player. He has some versatility. Landry has some injury problems the last few years. They'd also have to look at Courtney Upshaw. I still think they need a WR. They could get a RB. Mark Sanchez is too much of the focus here. Tebow and Sanchez have way too much talk. They need a RT in the worst way. They need a RB and they could use a OG.

Mel Kiper
  (1:36 PM)

Those wouldn't be luxury picks. They need a NT. They need a ILB. They need OL help too. The OL overall is very lean this year. If you can get Hightower at 24 and come back with Kelechi Osemele in the late second for the OL. And then a NT in the third like Alameda Ta'Amu.

John (Wisconsin)

who are the top 5 safety's in the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:38 PM)

Barron is 1. Harrison Smith is 2. Antonio Allen. Brandon Taylor. George Iloka. Some underrated safeties: Jerron McMillian, Whitley, Delano Howell, Brandon Hardin, Darius Prelow.

Dave (Delaware)

Do you think that Stephen Hill falls to the 2nd rd?

Mel Kiper
  (1:39 PM)

He could. I don't think it's probable, but it's possible. I have him going 30 to San Francisco, so he's not that far away from the second right now. He could go to Houston at 26, Cleveland at 22. He could go anywhere between 22 and 37.

Bryan (Boston)

You said earlier that taking Tannehill at 8 would be overdrafting. So, if Cleveland doesn't take him at four, would the smart move be for Miami to trade down into that 15-18 range and pick Tannehill then? Or are there other teams out there looking for a QB that would take him first?

Mel Kiper
  (1:41 PM)

The smart move for Miami would have been to sign Matt Flynn and reunite him with his old coach Joe Philbin. Then they wouldn't have to take a QB at 8. Tannehill's old coach Mike Sherman didn't even play him at QB until 2010. They could have gotten Flynn and then they could have used No. 8 on Riley Reiff. That would have made the team that much better.

Ross (Long Island)

Who do the rams draft with there two 2nd round picks?

Mel Kiper
  (1:42 PM)

I would say Jerel Worthy at DT from Michigan State. With the other pick at 39, maybe Mike Adams, OT from Ohio State. That would be assuming they get Justin Blackmon at 6.

Devin Brooks (Garden City, MICHIGAN)

Mel, I know the Lions need a CB or LT.. but here my thing, Do you think they Lions trade Fairley or Leshoure for a draft pick and then package that with their number 23 pick to move up in the top 10 to get Richardson or this best CB?

Mel Kiper
  (1:44 PM)

I don't rule out a team being aggressive. To get Claiborne, they'd have to get to No. 5. At 23, they could look at Martin at OT. Stephon Gilmore at CB. He could drop to 23.

Mel Kiper
  (1:45 PM)

They could also look at the second round for guys like: Trumaine Johnson, Dwight Bentley, Jayron Hosley. We have to see where Janoris Jenkins comes off the board.

Marc (NH)

Which players draft stock has went down since the combine?

Mel Kiper
  (1:48 PM)

Quinton Coples has moved down. Along with Courtney Upshaw. Jonathan Martin. Janoris Jenkins. Devin Still. Dwayne Allen. David Wilson. Zebrie Sanders. Melvin Ingram has gone up the most. Along with: Ryan Tannehill. Dontari Poe. Stephone Gilmore. Dont'a Hightower. Shea McClellin. Derek Wolfe. Coby Fleener.

Chris (Oregon)

Have we ever seen such a drastic plummet in draft stock like what we've seen with Burfict? He was a first round guy now I'm hearing 4th or 5th round, maybe lower.

Mel Kiper
  (1:50 PM)

His stock has been plummeting. He didn't dominant to the level of his talent. He played out of control. At the combine he ran a 5.0 40. You can't run a 5.0, have an average year and come out early. I wouldn't be surprised if he went in the 5, 6, 7 round. He's droped more than anyone in the draft from January to now.

Henry (NY)

You have Brian Quick going to Buffalo in the 2nd round. Who would you compare him to in the NFL?

Mel Kiper
  (1:52 PM)

He's an excellent talent. He only played one year of high school football because he was a basketball player to that point. He's 6-3, 220. He runs in the 4.49 range. He dropped some catchable balls. But he improved as Senior Bowl week went along. He was a little nervous. He would be a guy that has a chance to be a heckuva WR. Buffalo could look at Michael Floyd at 10. But they could also look at Riley Reiff. Depending on how that pick goes, it changes who they get in the second round.

Tyler (Tallahassee)

Any chance Jags get lucky and have Blackmon fall to them?

Mel Kiper
  (1:54 PM)

I would say no, because I couldn't see St. Louis passing up on him. I would say it's a slim chance that he gets to them at 7. But it's possible. They also need a guy like Ingram. They could reach for Floyd. They could get a decent WR in the second round. AJ Jenkins, Brian Quick, Rueben Randle could all be there in the second at No. 38.

Tom (Chicago)

Which round do you see Jared Crick going?

Mel Kiper
  (1:54 PM)

I have him going late second round, 59th pick overall to the Packers.

Ian (Glen Allen, VA)

Do you think the redskins made a smart move by trading for the 2nd overall pick in the NFL Draft

Mel Kiper
  (1:56 PM)

It depends on how RGIII plays. How quickly he wins as a NFL QB. They gave up what they needed to. I don't think it was too steep a price to pay. But RGIII has to learn what it takes to play QB in the NFL. He dealt with a very simplistic Baylor offense. This is the team that beat the Giants twice last year. They beat the Packers two years ago. They have a young LT. I think RGIII goes into a much better situation in terms of personnel than Andrew Luck does.

Jeff (Atlanta)

Mel, since my Bills signed both Anderson and Mario Williams and let OT Bell go, I would imagine their pick at #10 will be Riley Reiff or Cordy Glenn?

Mel Kiper
  (1:58 PM)

I have them taking Reiff. That's too early for Glenn. Reiff can play LT or RT down the line. They can get him in the first and then maybe a WR in the second. They can get a WR. I think getting Reiff would really help Ryan Fitzpatrick. He can help the run game. All of a sudden, your offense is looking better.
