We'll get started in a couple of minutes. Keep sending in your questions.
Could they name the stadium after AD?
It's going to take a lot more than a million dollars to get the stadium named after him.
Will the Oklahoma Sooners play in the College World Series in Omaha?
Right now, I would say no. Sunny's boys haven't shown enough to suggest they're of that caliber.
Who do you see winning the RRR game this season and a ball park score prediction?
It will be closer than 55-17, but I don't think Texas has enough offensively to win. For my spring prediction, I'll go with OU 28-17. Obviously that could change as the season gets closer.
Hey Jake, I got a couple things for you...1) Really, how much more effective will Javon Harris be at the strong safety position? If Harris' move turns out to be solid, is Colvin a lock at corner opposite Hurst? Also, how awesome is that secondary going to be with Jefferson back at safety?2)What is Landry going to have to do this year to resurrect his standing among Sooner fans?
1. The position change could make a slight difference, but I see it as minor. The biggest change for Harris has been a chance in scenery with the coaching staff. It's allowed him to hit the reset button. 2. Colvin is not a lock to move to CB, but all signs are pointing that way. 3. The secondary should be more sound with Jefferson at back safety. He brings a steadying presence that was missing at times there last season. 4. Probably win a national title.
What is going on with OU and Justin Manning? Are the Sooners trying to hand him over to Texas, LSU, or some other program? Is this a case of the staff taking his commitment for granted, a HS kid wanting more attention, or possibly a combination of both? What's going on here? Thanks
I can't say for certain what's happened, but Manning's perception is that he has been slow played by the Sooners. It could be a combination of both, but again, without tapping the phone lines, it's hard to say for certain. I just know what Manning feels. He could still end up with the Sooners, but it wouldn't stun me if this snafu leads Manning to ink with TCU.
Hello from a Sooner fan in Delaware. Do you think the defensive tackles are the weakness of the OU defense?
Glad you have you on the chat. I have a Blue Hens t-shirt in my closet. While the moves in the secondary have shown promise, I'm going to reserve judgment until I can see it in person. The DTs could be solid, but it's certainly not going to be the strength of the defense.
Thoughts on Chaz Nelson and the dline as a whole?
I think Chaz will help. His speed gives the position a change of pace off the sidelines. The starters there, though, will be King and R.J., with some combination of Walker, McGee and McFarland starting at tackle. The line has a chance to be good, but replacing Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis is not going to be easy.
What's up, Jake? If someone steps up at corner and Colvin makes the move to safety, who's the odd man out? Does Jefferson move back to nickle or does he stay at safety and Harris sits?
Hey Michael. That would probably make Harris the odd man out. It doesn't sound like Jefferson is going back to the nickel right now.
You might not agree, but besides the secondary and Landry's foot work in the pocket, the only obstacle appears to be avoiding the injury bug. Fans are so quick to judge Landry for doing poorly after Broyles going down as well as Stills not stepping up, walk a mile in his moccasins; how would they feel if their number one target for three years went down? Just venting, along with giving up the deep ball our only worry should be hoping the injury bug stays away.
I don't completely disagree. Landry was blamed for a lot of what happened late last season, but he played well enough in Waco for OU to win. He obviously didn't play well in Stillwater, but who really did?
Do u think Kenny Stills will play the slot receiver position this year?
I think that's a possibility, although I don't know if I see him as the full-time slot guy the way Broyles was. But with Metoyer coming on, they need to find a way to get both he and Stills on the field at the same time. That could require Stills sliding to the slot on occasion.
Talent wise, how would you rank the 2010, 2011, 2012 rosters?
That's a tough question. The margin between the three rosters is almost negligible. With a healthy Broyles, I'll go with 2011.
What do you see as the biggest positive and negative to this upcoming team?
Positives: Veteran QB, several potential playmakers, veteran line, battle-tested LBs, 3 stars in the secondary; Negatives: No proven No. 1 WR, injury prone RBs, no experienced TE, questionable as to whether there are any difference makers on the d-line, return game.
With three senior defensive tackles for this season, who will fill their shoes in 2013?
Jordan Phillips and either Jordan Wade or Marquis Anderson.
With a QB corps of Bell, Allen, Thompson, Knight, and potentially Brayden Scott/Kelly Hilinski...which QB is most likely to transfer?
I can't see any of them transferring. Allen will be a senior next year, it makes no sense for him to transfer if he loses the job to Bell. Bell could still start his senior year, even if he loses the job to Allen, and could still operate the Belldozer. Thompson could always play another position if QB didn't work out. Knight is the only QB in his class, and really the only upperclassmen he would have to beat out would be Thompson.
If you had to pick an offensive and defensive breakout player for 2012, who would you pick???
Offense: Trey Metoyer; Defense: RJ Washington
Is Patrick O'Hara still on the team? I didn't see him on the online roster. Will Hunnicutt be handling kickoff duties this year?
O'Hara isn't currently with the team. Stoops attributed his absence to a personal matter, so who knows if he'll be back in the fall. Hunnicutt is handling kickoffs right now.
Of the youngsters, who will you be looking at most during the Spring Game? For me it's mostly on the d-line and secondary.
Here are the players I'll be paying attention to: Metoyer, Brannon Green, RJ, Javon Harris, Chaz Nelson, Derek Fairnoik, Danzel Williams, Jordan Phillips, Jordan Wade and Lamar Harris, among others.
Where do the Sooners go after losing out on Max Browne?
Bob is going to be breaking that down on SoonerNation tomorrow.
Will landry Jones lead a better legacy than sam bradford? Where will jones be drafted?
To do that, Landry would probably have to win a national title. Sam was one of the most popular players with fans in OU history. Barring injury, Jones will be a first round pick, and possibly a high round pick if he goes out with a banner senior season.
Who are the current front runners for potential QB's in this upcoming recruiting class? I see a lot of talk about Brayden Scott but neither OU nor OSU has seem to offer him yet.
Again, Bob will have a big writeup tomorrow breaking down where OU goes next at QB.
Besides DT what position would you say would be the one needing the most attention in next years class? Lb's seems to be one of the positions that will need a talent influx.
Bob and Brandon think OT is a big need. I'm not as concerned there, but they do need to add a couple of OTs. DL should be a major focus, since they didn't add any DTs last season. Really, everywhere defensively needs to be replenished. What does OU not need? WRs.
How many TDs will Blake Bell have this season?
He had 13 in half a season. Would it be crazy to say he could have 20?
Anything new on Gardner? Would love to see what he can do out there with Stills and Metoyer on each side of him.
That makes two of us. Gardner has gone MIA since the arrest. We'll continue to try and get him on the phone, but right now, he's not returning any calls to anyone.
Hey Jake, would you put Landry in your top 5 for returning QBs next season? Andre Ware apparently didn't think he was deserving.
After Barkley, he's as good as anyone else. Obviously the end to 2011 wasn't pretty. But Landry is better than what he showed vs. OSU.
How long will Mike Stoops be at OU? Thanks for answering my Qs.
No problem. If a big job came open, he might be tempted to leave. Then again, he might be thinking he could be Bob's successor at OU if he stays. Every year it seems as if somebody new is offering Bob a job. I'm sure it will be the same with Mike.
Hi Jake. So, now that I've been caught hot-wheelin' with my mistress and brought some shame to the Hogs, do you think this will have an impact on recruiting and will OU benefit from it?
OU and Arkansas rarely go head-to-head with each other that I doubt it will be much of a factor. Then again, OU snagged Gardner from Arkansas, and both schools were two of the three finalists for DGB.
Is it just me, or does Tim Kish share a strong resemblance to Walter from The Big Lebowski?
My favorite scene from that movie is when Walter is berating Donnie for asking what they're talking about.
IS NATHAN HUGHES GOING TO PLAY AT ALL?
It doesn't sound like he's in the mix. That could change, but I don't hear his name popping up very often.
You also asked about Kellen Jones... Last I heard, he was looking at Clemson and Purdue.
Which current player gives the best interview? And which current player does the most trash talking without backing it up?
The most insightful interviews on the team: Ikard, Clay, Javon Harris, Jefferson. To your second question, think last year's team...
What is the most negative thing you've ever heard a former player say about Stoops or the program?
There are some former players who aren't too high on Jerry Schmidt.
Instead of calling any players injury prone, I imagine that we might also be able to call them "statistically unlikely to have many further injuryies". Research would be needed to support my hypothesis, it may prove the same odds as a coin flip. What say you, Blue Hen Booster?
I don't even think I understand the question.
What are you most intrested in seeing in the spring game? For me it would be if the DB's look confused like the seem to always be under BV...
Wow, negative nancy. I'll go with the glass half-full approach: Trey Metoyer.
Best OU coach of all-time... Wilkinson, Switzer, or Stoops? and why? (and don't say they're all great... we already know that... pick your definitive answer)
I would rank them 1. Wilkinson, 2. Switzer, 3. Stoops. It's closer between 1 and 2 then 2 and 3. I give the edge to Wilkinson because winning 31 and 47 straight games is an incredible feat, especially for a program that had done nothing before he got there.
With the WR position being the strength of the offense, do you see a scenario where OU plays with 4 WR's at once rather than 3 WR's & 1 TE?
Yes. I could see a lot of that. Or Millard with 3 WRs.
Trey Metoyer's spring highlight catch: awesome play or shoddy defending?
Awesome play, but the tackling was horrible. I'll have to ask Tony J about that one.
Wide receiver looks like it could be a liability or be the hands down strength of the team. All the talk about Metroyer and we haven't even seen Duron Neal on the field yet. Gut feeling which way the position goes: strength or liability?
Strength. Assuming Stills elevates his game.
So... women's basketball. Is the future bright for OU? Do you think Coach Coale will finally wrangle a national championship at some point?
Nothing like talking women's hoops in April.
Guys, that's it for the chat this week. Check in next Monday as we review the Red-White spring game. Same time, same place. Until then, have a great rest of the week.
