All right. Let's fire this thing up. Per the results of our weekly Twitter contest, today's first question will be a Redskins question. In fact, most of the questions in queue right now are Redskins questions. So if you're a fan of another team and that bothers you... well... ask a question!
I don't understand why people will still be down on the skins after they draft a QB. We beat the Giants twice and lost to the twice Cowboys in the 4th Quarter by 1 possession despite having some of the worst QB play in the league (in terms of passing, TD's and INT's). The three other teams have in the division have established QB's so their play should be stagnant next year while our QB play can really only go up if you look at mere projections. Omnibus rebus consideratis we should make up ground by just not being terrible at the QB next year. Am I missing something here?
Firing up the Latin with the first question! Yeah, we don't mess around. Anyway, I still think there are some pretty big question marks with the Redskins at wide receiver, cornerback, safety, offensive line. They still don't have Fletcher re-signed, and they need a veteran RB to go with the young guys. And the quarterback, while he's likely to be better than Grossman/Beck in the long term and possibly the short, will be a rookie. Rookie QBs have had success in recent years, but they've generally been on teams (Ravens, Jets) that were extremely strong in other areas.
Who in the NFC is the biggest threat to the NYG trying to repeat as Super Bowl Champions? And what is the Giants biggest flaw in trying to repeat at Super Bowl 47?
The toughest part for the Giants last year was actually getting into the playoff field. They did only win nine games and didn't secure their spot until New Year's Day. So it's not as though they're flawless and indestructible. Contenders in the NFC next year, at this incredibly distant point, would seem to include the 49ers, Packers, Bears, Falcons, Eagles. Maybe Saints depending on how many of them get suspended.
Hey Dan, think the Eagles favor getting a big WR or a TE to help in the red zone? Any names at either position you hear the Birds have had interest in?
Plaxico Burress has of course been mentioned and remains a possibility, as far as I know. As for tight end, haven't heard much, but they could be looking for one. With Jason Peters out, Brent Celek may have to do a lot more blocking.
Hi Dan, is there any update on when the WAS & DAL vs. NFL arbitration will take place? In anticipation of no to that question, could you in specualtion put a probability of it taking place prior to the draft?
I doubt it happens that quickly. Discovery can take a long time in a case like this.
Should the Redskins explore the possibility of signing Tanard Jackson to beef up the Safety position? Yes, he had substance problems and he failed his physical....but he's 26 years old, had a great start to his career and performed decently under Raheem Morris. thoughts?
The Morris connection makes this one worth watching, I agree.
Realistically, what is Felix Jones' worth in a trade-for-picks scenario?
I can't imagine they could get more than a 5th rounder for him, can you?
Greetings! As a Giants fan I am more worried about the Boys than the Eagles this off season for a few reasons: better QB and now improved D. Eagles also still have an o-line coach leading the D. Thoughts?
I think the Eagles entered the offseason with less work to do than the Cowboys did. The question is whether the work the Cowboys have done moves them past the Eagles. I don't think it has, but they do have the better quarterback.
Who do you think the skins would be better off with Luck or RGIII?
I think Griffin is the fit there for a number of reasons, but it's a can't-lose scenario. They'd be thrilled with either one.
Hey Dan!Do you see it as a good thing or a bad thing that the skins may go into the next season with the same starting o-line? Continuity vs. talent?
It's really only a good thing if Brown and Lichtensteiger are fully healthy, and I think those are big IFs right now. So I think they should have done more to upgrade.
Any word on an extension for Shady, or did the Eagles use too much of this year's cap room signing Bell as the emergency LT?
There is plenty of cap room remaining, and they have had discussions about a contract extension for McCoy. I believe that will get done, though maybe not until sometime during or after the coming season.
Obviously Coughlin has lifetime immunity now, but of the other 3 coaches who is on the hottest seat this year in the NFC East?
Quite obviously, Andy Reid, and by a wide margin.
Do you think Redskins will find a way to resign London Fletcher? Or will he be a cap penalty casualty? If that does happen. who could be the possibile replacements?
I think they will re-sign him. I do not believe they have considered Plan B options.
talking about the cowboys weather they draft fletcher cox mark barron courtney upshaw which player would make the most immediate impact and could dallas possibly trade down?
I think, of those, Cox has the biggest immediate impact. And I think he'd be a great pick for them if he lasts that far. Immediate help for the pass rush, flexibility on the line, pressure off of Anthony Spencer. Would be an ideal pick for them. Not sure he's getting to 14, though.
Gary Horton says the Cowboys need a #2 Corner to play alongside Carr. Am I mistaken in thinking that Carr is most likely our #2 corner playing alongside Jenkins?
I agree with you. I'd need to re-read what Gary wrote, but does he not acknowledge Jenkins, or is he assuming continued poor health?
Eli has proved he can make any TE useful so why prioritize that position with a first round pick
I don't think they will. Now, if their pick comes along and Coby Fleener is still there and he far outranks everyone else still on their board, they take him because of the value he represents. That's how the Giants roll.
HOW IS YOUR DAY GOING TODAY??
I mean, you know. Kids off from school. Kinda chilly out. Not bad, but a little more work to get through than a normal Tuesday. Thanks for asking.
Dan, I want the Eagles to get BC LB Luke Kuchely with 15th pick. Any chance he will still be there? LB group of WIL Chaney, MLB Ryans, and SAM Kuchely would be major upgrade
Most of the recent projections I've seen have Kuechly going in the top 10, possibly to Carolina. They may have to move up if they want him.
so fletcher cox is off the board at 14 who does dallas go with? barron? upshaw? brockers? or could they go with a cornerback and turn corner from a slight weakness into what would be a strength
As I have written many times, I believe the Cowboys should take the best available defensive player, regardless of position. There's no area of that defense that couldn't benefit from improved depth.
seeing as the giants stay course and tend not to do anything crazy. more impressive shot the albatross or the shot only bubba can hit?
Given the circumstances (i.e. the fact that it won the Masters) Bubba's banana hook around the trees is the answer. It will have more enduring historical import. But Oosthuizen's double-eagle was the better shot. You could live the rest of your life and never see anyone do it again. Bubba could drop 10 more balls in the same spot and conceivably hit that shot 7 more times.
Dan, who do you think will be starting at safety for the 'Skins this year? Gomes and Merriweather? Obviously Landry hadn't been performing recently, but it seems like they cut players without a real plan to replace them...
They did decide to move on from Landry because they felt he wasn't offering enough to justify the price. So yeah, they did cut him without identifying a replacement. They like Gomes but don't know if he's ready yet. I think they need a deep cover guy, and I don't think they have one on the roster right now.
so going back to my question above who do u think is the best player available brockers barron upshaw kirkpatrick?
I think probably Upshaw, but I saw Calvin wrote the other day that they're not that high on him.
Dan, given the news that Kyle Shanahan intends to travel to Baylor to work with RGIII, do you think contracts have been signed by Luck and RGIII?
No I do not.
I hear a lot about the Giants possibly trying to move up in the draft (if the right player falls that far). Which player, that has a realistic chance to fall, would the Giants view as someone to trade up and get?
I don't know where you've heard that, and it's something the Giants rarely do. If it's getting close to their pick and someone like Mike Adams is still there, I could see them moving up a spot or two to get him. But they tend to stay put and take the best player still on their board.
Dan was DeMarco Murray a one year wonder or is he here to stay. He had great success at Oklahoma but we all know about his problem with staying healthy.
I do not think he's a one-year wonder, but the way he runs does not lend itself to long-term health. I think the offense will be excellent as long as he's playing, but they need to back him up better than he currently is.
Hey Dan, as a Giants fan I know that they will take the player highest on their board that's available... my question is, Chandler Jones, Coby Fleener and Mike Adams, how do you think they have these three ranked? My guess is Jones, Adams, Fleener... your take?
I would not be surprised if that's the way they had them ranked. Adams fills an immediate need, though, and if it's close between him and Jones, they have a tough call.
Any chance the Eagles trade up for Poe? They have the DE that scare people if they get a guy in the middle that draws any double team has to help right?
I don't think, with Dixon and Landri re-signed, the Eagles have any incentive to trade up for a player that comes with as many question marks as Poe does.
Without a legit right tackle, do you think the skins offense takes a step back?
Again, Brown IS a legit right tackle. He just has a bad hip. If he can keep it healthy, they like what he gives them in their offense. A healthy Brown is better than any other current option they have. They just need to find a way to keep him healthy.
Chances Dallas trades up to take a more high profile defensive player?
I don't think the height of the player's profile is the Cowboys' current priority. They'll look for someone they think can help them, and if they need to move up a pick or two to get him, they've shown in the past that they're willing to do that.
Are the Redskins going to bring in competition against Gano for the kicker postion?
I don't know. I think they should, but that doesn't seem to be a major area of concern for them when I talk to their people.
A healthy Brown is better than any other current option they have.-----------*cough* Willie Smith *cough*
Well, but they don't know on Smith yet. They were pleasantly surprised with what they saw last year, and I'm sure they'll look seriously at him this preseason. But they just don't know. He'd be a surprise.
More interesting, first month of baseball season, wind down of NBA/NHL season or NFL draft season?
In my heart, I'm a baseball guy.
Do you think the Skins would have cut Atogwe, absent the cap penalty? I wonder whether they would consider bringing him back at a reduced price. What do you think? He did not perform to expectations last year, but he also wasn't healthy for most of the year.
There was some talk about cutting him when I was down there in December. Concerns about health, I think. I doubt they've ruled out a return for him at a reduced price, but they were already pondering other options even before the season ended.
As a fan of Bruce Carter, I thought the signing of Conner was a major detriment to his development. Then I looked at Conner's career abd was not overly impressed. Who do you think wins the ILB spot next to Lee between the two?
I think Conner will be the guy to start the season (or at least to start camp), and Carter gets time to learn and develop, which he needs. But as you suggest, if Carter comes quickly, there's little in Conner's history to suggest he'll hold him off. It's a good situation for them I think.
Do the Eagles draft or sign a red zone target?
I mean, McCoy had 17 rushing TDs. I think this is a little bit of an overrated idea, right, this need for a red zone target?
Dan, are you in the slightest upset about the 2012 budget... they cut school funding in Ridgewood by 8%.
Well, of course I am, especially since the taxes keep going up. But everybody likes Christie, so what can we do?
How early could the Eagles take a QB?I know it's not a huge priority but Vicks style means he misses 2-4 games and thats probably gonna get worse as he gets older.
They have two second-round picks and a third. I don't think it'd be surprising to see them take a QB with one of those three picks.
Do the Redskins think Lenard Hankerson can be a good enough WR to play on the other side of Garcon?
Yes. The Redskins think Hankerson can develop into a true No. 1.
Thoughts on when the new NFL schedule will be released?
Everything seems to be pointing to next Tuesday, the 17th.
Will Vickers do his job as well as Fiemnetta? That seems to be a major loss.
I think Vickers is considered a better player than Fiammetta. I think they upgraded there.
Do you see the eagles taking a running back later in the draft. Somebody like Vic Ballard to complement McCoy as a power back? Also what do you think of them also taking Nate Potter? Can you answer my question?
I don't know enough about those two players to address them specifically, but in general yes, I believe the Eagles will have an eye on improving their depth at running back.
How long do you think Grossman sticks around to be a backup? Is he at the point in his career where he knows he's not going to get a starting role so he'll just stay put for now?
Yeah, I would think that he is at that point.
Why do the Eagles D get no respect from fans here... they finished good last year 8th overall D and on top of that they have Todd Bowles to help Castillo.
It was a disappointing year in Philadelphia. No one's getting off easy. And the defense had major holes that helped cost them a lot of early games. Everybody thought the Castillo move was questionable when it was made, so obviously, when things went wrong, it was easy to point the finger there. 8th overall is nice, but the number under the "W" has to get higher than 8 for anybody to start feeling good about it.
re: Grossman - Don't you think the temptation to play him is too much for the Shanahans to resist? There's a reason why nobody else in the league wants to touch him, yet he's still on the Skins.
No, I think the 20th interception shook up that temptation a little bit. They traded three first-round picks and a second so they could draft a quarterback. What more proof do you need that they weren't happy with Grossman as the starter?
You had the GIANTS going with Mike Adams in the Bloggers Draft. Do you have someone within the organization grading him in the 1st or are you taking Scouts. Inc's grade. I just don't see them taking a soft, undisciplined player at a position they rarely draft that high.
I do not have inside-organization info on that, no. I was going with our Scouts Inc board and taking the guy who was the best player left available. Especially considering he plays a position of need.
But with the Giants, I admit it's a guess, and I wrote in the blurb that I thought Chandler Jones would be a more Giant-esque pick there.
Caz (Dallas )Gary Horton says the Cowboys need a #2 Corner to play alongside Carr. Am I mistaken in thinking that Carr is most likely our #2 corner playing alongside Jenkins? $50 million says Carr is the #1 CB.
Well, no, that's not true. I sincerely doubt, if Garrett thinks Jenkins can cover the other team's WR1 better, he'll put Carr on him just because of the contract.
I agree they don't like Grossman as a starter, but I particularly like him as a backup. Having someone there who knows the offense and can step in if needed and is willing to tutor a rookie is a pretty rare thing now-a-days.
I agree. I think Grossman is the exact right backup for this year's Redskins.
Do the Birds still move Asante if they can only get a 5th or 6th rounder for him, or keep him and let it ride? I'm not sure if I agree with some writers who think that keeping him for another year would be a bad idea.
I think they could make it work with all three. I don't think that's the sole motivation for moving him. Age, contract, his own attitude about being part of that three... a combination of things. I bet they move him for a fourth or fifth.
Can the Caps beat the Bruins?
I have no idea.
Do you think the Skins will eventually resign Hightower? Or are they content with the Helu/Royster combo? Personally I was a little more impressed with Helu and Royster and believe they have a much higher ceiling than Tim, especially with him coming off a major knee injury.
They are trying to sign Hightower, and if he's healthy, he's the starter. They think he's a more complete back than the other two, and they don't want to go into the season with just the two youngsters.
What do you think of the cardinals chances of repeating this year as world series champs
Pretty bad. Pujols would be tough enough to replace on his own, and now they're down Carpenter too. Plus, kind of like the NY Giants, it's easy to forget they barely even made it into the field last year!
What's the story on Mike Patterson's health?
I saw a report that the surgery went well, and I think he's in their plans for 2012.
What is your favorite all-time sports movie?
The first one that jumped to mind when I read the question was "Hoosiers"
Skins to trade their 5th for Asante?
Hard to see them dealing him in the division for a 5th.
Do you see RGIII coming anywhere near the performance of killa cam last season. I mean performance wise not record because thats certainly achievable...
Different sorts of players, and he does not have a Steve Smith in the WR corps. I can't imagine his numbers approach Cam's rookie numbers, but as you suggest, his record could be better.
Why are we talking baseball????????
Well, it is baseball season.
The eagles have so much talent and yet they fell apart last year. Do you think they're similar to the giants leadership wise, that if someone stepped up they can look like a completely different team
No, I do not think they are similar to the Giants leadership wise. They need to develop that. Cullen Jenkins is a candidate (with a Super Bowl ring), and I think they're expecting some leadership help from DeMeco Ryans.
Hoosiers is great but I must admit I can think of at least 5 better and more relative.....
Yeah, again, first one that came to mind. It may not be the answer.
Will andy reid's place on the hot seat make him more conservative or aggressive?
Oh, I think if Andy ever goes down, he'll go down doing things his way.
Which defensive line is better: Giants or Bills?
I'm a big fan of Mario Williams, but I'll stick with the champs on this one.
Is Caddyshack a sports movie?
Sure, and an all-time great one.
Do you think there is long term regret in giving Vick a huge long term contract?
I think they can get out of it after this year with very little pain, so I doubt there's any long-term regret. This is the year for Vick and the Eagles. Either they do something or they blow it all up.
Dan Graziano (12:44 PM)Hard to see them dealing him in the division for a 5th.We have an extra 4 we can throw their way...wouldn't he be worth that seeing our need?
Yeah, if I were the Redskins I'd give the 4th for Samuel. I'm just not sure, if I'm the Eagles, I want to play him twice a year.
Um, Remember the Titans? This IS a football chat..
I do like that movie.
do you enjoy being in charge of the craziest comment section on the internet?
I enjoy the comment section, but I never feel as though I am "in charge" of it in any way.
Hoosiers or Friday Night Lights? You gotta take Friday Night Lights Danny boy!
The movie? No. The TV series, absolutely. LOVED that show.
Hunger Games; book vs. movie, which did you like better. You've mentioned it, so I'm guessing you've at least read the book.
Haven't seen the movie. Did read the books. First book was very good, second and third not as great.
We can just move on if we all admit that the Sandlot is the greatest sports movie of all time.
Aw, man. Watched that with my kids a few weeks ago. They're still talking about it. Sensational.
If the Giants take a RB in the 1st, who do you think they take? Thanks and have a great day.
My guess is Lamar Miller would be the only one worth considering at that spot, but I think they'll find better RB value in a later round.
Following up on Mike Patterson. How much playing time will he get if the Eagles draft Cox or Poe?
Washburn knows how to rotate his linemen to maximize their production. Patterson would be a starter going into camp.
I dont like my football questions getting skipped for childrens book banter. I'm concerned about the lack of urgency in resigning LeSean. If he holds out (which from a biz standpoint he should) the eagles have no one behind him that can carry a load. Why aren't they getting this done?
I do not get a sense that he's a holdout candidate. There seems to be no animosity between him and the team regarding contract. From what I understand, the dialogue between the two sides has been encouraging and productive and there's no reason to worry.
SO IF LUCK HAD COME OUT LAST YEAR WOULD RG3 HAVE BEEN THE 1ST OVERALL PICK THIS YEAR?? BASICALLY THERE ARE TWO NO.1 OVERALL QB'S IN THIS DRAFT.
I think if Luck had come out last year, the top two picks this year would have been Griffin and Matt Barkley, and I have no idea what the order would have been.
What are your feelings on Ozzie Guillens comments about Fidel?
I think he was careless and stupid for saying them without anticipating the way they'd be received.
are you wearing pants? i never did.
I'll never tell.
I don't like my sports movie questions getting interupted by football questions.Rocky has to be a top 5 right?
You know, yeah. Rocky has to be the all-time best sports movie. But it kind of transcends the genre, no? I think that's why most people don't think of it when the question comes up. Also because boxing isn't a very popular sport anymore.
You turning this into a joke. I asked about Zach Brown about 30 minutes ago and you are now taking quesiong on movies. Can you say jerk
I can. In fact, I'm tempted to do so...
How censored are coaches going to be with their players in meetings and on the sidelines after what's gone on with the bounty tapes? Are generalizations like "put a good hit on him" all of a sudden not acceptable?
I think the key thing in the Williams tape is the specific mention of specific injuries. If I were a coach, and I was following this firestorm, that's what I'd cut out of future speeches. I think you can get your guys fired up without telling them to attack specific pre-existing injuries.
Tell us your favorite stadium experience! We are dying to know.
In football? It's either Lambeau or Cowboys Stadium. But the NFL offers very few unique stadium experiences.
If you ran the Eagles and you had either Keuchly, Floyd, or Cox at 15 which one do you take and why? and then you can end the chat!!!
Kuechly. See you all next week.
