Welcome to a rare Tuesday ESPN.com chat for me. Hope everyone enjoyed the off weekend and had a great Easter with their families. I know I did. Now I'm ready to answer your quetions. Fire away.
Where does Jr. come off demanding an explanation from Rooty and making sarcastic comments about excuses being laughable?
Thanks for beating Chris for the pole position. As for Junior, he was upset that Reutimann stalling costing his teammates a 1-2 finish. He had a good point, though. NASCAR should have gotten the 10 car off the track at least four or five laps earlier. And while I'm on the soapbox, if drivers 30-43 or possibly 35-43 were awarded an equal amount of points you wouldn't see many wrecked cars on the track.
If David Retimann Does Not Qualify for the Samsung 500 will he Part Ways with Tommy Baldwin Racing? If Reutimann Part Ways who will share the #10 Car with Danica Patrick?
If for some reason Baldwin lets Reutimann go I'd try to get Brian Vickers in as many races as I can when he's not in the MWR 55.
Will Danica Patrick race in selected Nationwide Series Races in 2013 while she races full-time in the Sprint Cup Series?
I would suspect a few. But she hasn't said.
How's traffic heading up to TMS? I've never been there before and I'd like to get a decent parking space.
Hit and miss. I've been in bad traffic there and not so bad. All depends on what time you go. If you get there early enough you'll miss it.
What's the chances of Rowdy sweeping the weekend? He looked strong the last time they raced at Texas.
He's definitely due. He really needs a good weekend to get his mojo back.
Can you just admit that Joey Logano is not who you thought he was and that he will never consistently compete at the Cup level? Thanks.
I never had any expectations of where he would be at this point. I like what he's done so far this year with the exception of Martinsville and believe he has the talent to compete at the highest level in a few years.
Does future Hall of Famer Rowdy deserve more respect for running KBM while trying to get the most Nascar wins all time?
Thanks for the sarcasm. First, he's not trying to challenge Petty's record 200 Cup wins as much as he set that as a number to reach. You do have to respect him for attepmting to run his own team. And I do expect him to be a Hall of Famer one day.
Junebug's performance this year is misleading because most of his good finishes were due to pit strategy for dumb luck. Should he be concerned about missing the Chase for the fourth time in 9 seasons?
Dumb luck? You're watching different races than I am. No concern. He'll make it in easily.
How concerned are you that Smoke peaked too early and will run out of momentum come Chase time?
That is why I left him out of my top 5 favorites to win the title when I was asked here either last week or the week before. I do believe you can peak too early and perhaps this will be the case for Tony. It's hard to sustain for 36 races.
hey newt, who are your top 5 and darkhorse for texas?
Let's go with Biffle, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin, in no particular order.
if the chase started today alot of big names would be on the outside looking in(18,24,1,5 ). Which of these guys do you see turning there season around and making the chase and who will remain on the outside? thanks newt
Definitely Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon. Not so much with McMurray and Kahne, Not even sure how McMurray got on your list. He didn't make the Chase when he won the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same season.
With speeds nearing 220 mph in a tire test, will NASCAR mandate restrictor plates at Michigan if speeds are too high during early practice June race weekend?
Plates would be a last resort. They'll fix this with the tires.
David, both Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne seemed to struggle Saturday night at Attica. Should they consider cutting back on their Sprint Cup commitments in order to concentrate on the sprint car side of things?
More sarcasm. I love it. Kahne definitely should the way his season has gone. Back at you with sarcasm.
Newt: I know Chip really likes Juan Pablo, but how long can he put up with him finishing in the Mid 20's every week?
When the sponsors say they are moving on, which could get getting closer than we think.
Hi David, where does Earnhardt come off asking Reutimann for an "explanation" on Martinsville and saying it would be "laughable"? Since when did he become so sarcastic and negative?
Didn't I answer this already?
After the M'ville race I saw Brad K say that Rooty was "dirty racing" and wondered when Brad began suffering from "big headed disease'?
No big head with Brad K. He does like sharing his thoughts with the public to help educate them on things. I kind of like his brashness.
Newt, do you think Rowdy, Dave and the #18 guys will finally get the monkey off their backs and get that first Texas win after being so close so many times before?
With the way Jr. stepped in it and put his foot in his mouth with the sarcastic Rooty comments, are you hearing the HMS brass is telling Jr. to worry about winning a race instead of running his mouth about the other drivers?
Not at all. Seems we have a bash Junior club going today.
Since Rooty won cup races in '09-Charlotte and '10-Chicago and Jr. hasn't won since 2008 where does Jr. come off criticising Rooty's racing?
How many times has Reutimann made the Chase or won the Daytona 500? Just saying.
Did you see Baldwin on Despain praising Jeff and Jimmie for taking the high road on the #10 Martinsville deal but bashing Jr. for his negative comments? What did you think?
Missed that, but not surprised. Tommy is a proud man.
Newt, with all of the bad luck the #18 team has suffered, do you think Rowdy will need to win 2-3 races to make the chase as a wildcard?
Nah. He'll rally and make the Chase with wins and points.
David, anything new on Dodge for 2013...and what are the chances of them getting EGR and RPM ?
Nothing new. Heard a few EGR rumblings, but I'll believe that when I see it. Hearing RPM not interested.
Will dodge be in Nascar in 2013..with a decent team ?
The decent team is the tricky part. I'm skeptical. Just aren't any really good options. And do you consider EGR or RPM decent?
Octo Schmocto. Last time I checked, we live in a country that allows free speech. I think we're even allowed to like NASCAR without worshipping Junebug in America, too!
Can't argue that.
Hi Newt! Why do Kurt and Kyle race NW ser ies and steal sponsors from young guns Trevor Bayne?
The sponsors picked Kyle and Kurt over Trevor. Can't blame the drivers for that. It's not stealing.
Mr Newton, do you see another NW stud like Cole Whitt winnning soon. It's nice to see Kyle not winning every minor race.
Not sure it'll be Cole, but do see others with a chance.
Hi. Do you think MWR is the new Toyota powerhouse since they are owning JGR weekly?
Not there yet, but closing in. And remember JGR has a win with Hamlin. MWR has no wins.
Does Jr win this week? #JrNation #Snookie
Does Jr take the point lead Sat night?
Gonna be interesting. Greg Biffle isn't bad at Texas, either. Could be pretty close after this.
As a CT resident, I am disapointed in Logano. I have shifted my focus to Parker Kligerman. He will be a star. Logano will be back in NW next year
You may want to wait until the end of the season. I still see Logano sneaking into the Chase.
When does Kurt explode? Or Kyle? They are both doing bad this year
Kurt as I've said all season can't afford to explode. He needs to behave for a ride next year. Kyle ... a few more early wrecks and you might see something. Couldn't blame him, honestly.
You writers claimed Kasey will win multiple races and make the chase. You guys are jinxes.
Don't include me in there. I didn't pick Kasey as my favorite to win a race or two and get the top wild card spot. I picked Jeff Gordon. Marty Smith did as well.
KBM seems down this year? Is Kyle expanding too much energy and it causing him to stink in Cup and his NW and truck teams to be bad?
This is KBM's first venture into NW,so give them time. Is this a distraction to Cup. I'm sure Kyle will tell you no.
With Logano on the downward spirel, who drives the 20 next year?
Kurt Busch is the popular answer, although I don't see Logano on a downward spiral due to an average finish at Martinsville. If I were the Gibbs and do make a change I'd try to get one of the Roush young drivers.
When does coach fire Scottt and put Ryan Truex in the car fulltime?
He was fourth in his last outing at Fontana. Don't throw dirt on him and his family money yet.
Why doesn't NASCAR tell the teams that Cup drivers like Kyle, Kurt, Joey, and Denny belong in the Cup series. I will not pay to go to a NW race they are in.
There are a lot of people that go to the NW races to see those guys. Honestly, without them owners might find it hard to sell enough sponsorship to have a field of more than 35 cars.
Why does everyone get mad at Jr over the Ruitimann thing? He was asked a question and answered it.
The top 35 rule needs to stay. Just because a driver quals well doesn't mean they will race more than 10 laps and park. I want the bigger teams in there and not the scrub start and parks.
Agree. Read my take on it in Turn 4. I'm in the minority, but the Top 35 rule isn't the problem.
Danica will win a race this year! Mark my word!
Let me know when and where.
Danica doesn't need Reuti to keep her car in the top 35. She will be oon the pole in Darlington.
Are you kidding? It's the toughest track on the circuit. She'll be lucky to get through qualifying.
I understand why so much of the press talks about Dale Jr... that's what the readers want. But why do so much of the press still talk him down and say he still can't turn his career around and be a regular contender? Even after we've seen marked improvement from him last year and this year. Its not something I've noticed here as much as I have on that OTHER network...
Hey, I've picked Junior to win a few races and make the Chase. The reason the press talks about him is the reason you said, that's what readers and viewers want. It's kind of like Tiger Woods. No matter where he is in the field there is an obligation to follow him and gie updates.
I've seen alot of people talking about the fact that Travis Pastrana is driving a Dodge Dart in Rally cars now... I think people are supposing its an indication that MWR will switch to Dodge in NASCAR next year. Do you think that is the case?
Can't see that happening. Waltrip wouldn't have made it this far in his Cup venture without Toyota support.
Why does it feel like NASCAR (and Fox) has forgotten everything that hapened in the sport before 2001?
Not sure what you mean here. Besides, during the race I am on the ESPN.com race chat. More fun.
Last week you said you answered dumb octo questions because its' "equal opportunity". How is that equal opportunity when you answer a dozen dumb octo questions and only one or two intelligent questions from the rest? Just skip the dumb questions. Is that so hard for you?
So should I skip this one? Seriously, while some of you have mastered identifying the octos, I have not. I just take the questions and move on, trying to get to as many as I can. Think i answer more than any other chatter.
Hey Newt, since Texas has traditionally be Ford country, do you expect Scotty Speed to score a top 20 with is Leavine Family Racing Ford Sat. night?
If I didn't know better I'd sware this is a Scott Speed Octo. No.
Golf doesn't guarantee that the top golfers will play in the final round. Neither does NHRA. I don't see why NASCAR has to do it especially when they get 2 laps to qualify. Besides how often does that happen anyway that it is a concern?
But golf and NHRA do allow those at the top of their fields to at least begin the competition.
If Dodge plans on staying in cup don't they have to step up very soon and make multi million $$ deals with teams and Penske engines?
I'd say we'll know something by mid-summer at the latest.
David, you mentioned last week that RFR is looking at 2013 for sponsorship. Any idea on how they are doing and who are they talking to?
No specifics yet. They don't like putting out the word on who they are talking to on the chance another team might sweep in and steal the sponsor.
YES, The Sprint Cup Series needs more short track racing. Rockingham and North Wilkesboro would both be good choices for the top series in NASCAR to return to. Even if they only did one race each year.
I agree, but it won't happen. The next short track we'll see is Iowa.
Over/Under. 24 Career Wins by the time Jr. Retires?
Tough one, but I'll go with under.
Our thoughts and prayers have been with David Reutimann and his family during this difficult time due to Jr's sarcastic and negative, post Martinsville remarks and I wondered if David has found it in his heart to forgive Jr?
Love this sarcastic bunch today.
In your opininon Who is the best driver at Interacting with the Fans at the track. I have met some and I think Michael Waltrip really cares about his fans and will hang out as long as he can with you.
Not sure I count Waltrip as a driver even though he is in a few races this year. As for fulltime drivers, I'll go with Keselowski.
Do you expect to see Edwards and Rowdy finally break out of their winter sleep and start racing Sat. night at Texas?
Not so worried about Kyle Busch. He's shown the speed to be up front a few times. Edwards' struggles are a bigger concern. He's typically good at Texas, so if he doesn't break out of whatever he's in it is a bad sign.
Hey Dave ...when and where do they post betting lines on Nascar Races?
I've seen them in Las Vegas.
What is one piece of Nascar Memorbillia you wish you had?
One of Richard Petty's cowboy hats.
Do you think Davey Allison Gets into the HOF One Day, He would probably be in the 4th or 5th class had tragic not struck.
Had it not been for his tragic death he probably would have. Not good odds now.
What do you expect out of Kurt Busch in his first Nationwide race with KBM?
He'll have a lot of fun as he's been talking all season.
With Chevrolet back in INDYCAR, any chance you see any NASCAR drivers( Chevy team i presume ) trying the Indy 500? Wasn't manufacturer the problem all along or are NASCAR drivers no longer interested.
Tony isn't interested. Jimmie Johnson has teased with the thought. Just don't see it anytime soon, though.
do you expect to see a squadron of ford fusions finishing 1-2-3 sat. night?
Question: I like how the points are right now but some complain that the drivers with the most wins aren't leading the points. But if Driver A wins a race and Driver B finishes third then next week, driver B finishes fourth and Driver A finishes 16th, why would he deserve the point lead. Technically, Driver B has finished ahead of more cars so why do some complain? It's not a one on one sport.
Agreed. And the biggest complaint I hear is fans simply don't like the Chase, or putting all the emphasis on winning the title. Seemed each event was more special back in the day.

should joey logano fans b worried ,and whos ur winner and dark horse for the weekend
Way too early for concern. Winner: Denny Hamlin. Darkhorse: Joey Logano.
AUTO UPDATE~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ON@!@@@@@@
turned it on before the chat started.
Do you expect a fan backlash against Junior for the way he put his foot in his mouth over the #10 M'ville deal?
Will the upcoming Michigan races see speeds higher than 216 mph?
Not if NASCAR and Goodyear has anything to do with it.
Does Kurt and Rowdy's dad, Tom Busch work with his boys at Kyle Busch Motorsports and does Tom spot for either of his boys?
I don't believe so.
Hey Newt. If you could do a sit-down interview with any NASCAR driver, past or present, who would it be and why?
I've sat down with most of the present, and many of those in the past that I would consider legendary. Maybe Fireball Roberts.
It seems like since Hendricks switched the shops around to benefit Junebug the whole organization has been off......just sayin'
Think it's is coincidence more than anything. Johnson's run had to end somewhere. But Junior and Gordon made the Chase last year, and Gordon won a few races, so there has been some improvement.
Howdy David. Can't wait to head to the track here in a couple of days! Last year in the Spring, the Ford camp dominated, but when the Chas race came around it seemed like other manufacturers (namely Chevy) had close the gap. Do you expect the same, or will the Ford guys be holding down the front for a second straight Spring?
I see a few Chevys and Toyotas in the mix this time around.
Newt, I'm amazed how many people are projecting Chase when we haven't hit the middle of April. This wouldn't even be the quarter pole from the gate at the Kentucky Derby.
Not me. It typically doesn't change by a few drivers after this point in the season. But it does change.
How did Kyle look strong at Texas last time? He was parked for being a moron!
Think the questioner was referring to the spring race.
Man, Tyler has some good questions today! Do you see the KBM 18 winning the first race back at the Rock?
Will Brian Vickers get a full time cup ride with a top organization next season?
If he can continue on the path he's on with MWR he will. Maybe even MWR will expand.
Do you think jr will actually win soon? When he wins will it poor?
Yes. Poor? or Pour?
so is dodge out of nascar ?
Nope. Working hard to remain viable in 2013.
What did you think seeing Harvick leading 248 of 250 laps in that M.ville, truck race in an RCR cup/truck against small 1 truck teams?
I thought it meant Harvick is pretty good at Martinsville with good equipment.
I know Jr. has had to deal with this his whole life and career, but he can't win. If he doesn't let things get to him, he doesn't care. If he becomes feisty, people ask who Jr. thinks he is. I will take feisty Jr. myself.
People underestimate him. But you're right on many fronts. He is in a no-win situation ... unless he wins a championship.
Texas is Ford country and we wondered if you expect to see Edwards finally win a race Sat. night?
Not the way he has performed so far.
Do you think Regan Smith should be considered for a ride with a better team? I mean, he's shown me more than Logano, with Furniture Row
Such Logano bashing today. I do believe Smith is better than his equipment. But having said that, owners aren't dumb and apparently he hasn't sone enough to warrant them taking a chance.
Is Kahne done with trying to make the chase via points? Is it a bridge to far.
Still needs to collect points to get back in the top 20 for a wild card. But he does have his back against the wall.
Based on experience in covering NASCAR, who be the favorite to win at a track between, David Newton, Blount, Hinton, McGee and Marty Smith?
I've played basketball with Marty and he's by far in better shape than the rest of us.
Do you expect any feuds to be reignited at Texas?
I hope so. Been way too quiet so far.
What are the chances Roush could lose either Stenhouse or Bayne to another team if they cant find funding. Say if Gibbs replaces Logano, or Penske adds a third team, and keeps Hornish in NW
Roush has contracts with both to protect them, but not sure that'll hold water if they don't get sponsorship and fulltime rides for both after this season.
Fans pay to see their favorite drivers. Fans say they want a change in the rule but if their favorite driver misses the race because they blow a tire they will not be very happy. Don't get rid of the top 35 rule, just tweak it.
At a few months shy of his 38th b-day, do you think Junior has missed the age window of opportunity on winning the cup?
If you had to explain this season to someone in one sentence, what would you say?
That's it for me, folks. Enjoy Texas races. I"m going to catch a little NHRA action in Charlotte this weekend.
