Welcome to today's HornsNation chat. It's a beautiful day in Austin, Texas, and there's plenty going on right now. Let's talk Texas and whatever else your hearts desire.
if Texas can Nab Pollard and Ridlet tomorrow how good do you think they can be next year ?
Ridley will sign tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. Pollard? I'm not so sure he's a Longhorn, and our ESPN basketball recruiting experts say he could end up at Alabama, Georgetown, Mississippi State, Missouri and possibly even Kentucky. It's wide open right now. I just don't love Texas' chances.
Would you say the longhorns have the one of the best cornerback duos in all of college football this upcoming year?
Yeah, I would say that. Byndom and Diggs are terrific. Obviously you have to look at the SEC when you talk about best tandems. Tyrann Mathieu and anyone else is a darn good one, and Alabama has been so good at recruiting secondary under Saban. They'll play some elite JUCOS at CB this year with young Dee Milliner and probably still thrive.
In addition to Dylans question, could you say Texas has the best secondary in all of college football?
Really depends on how good the guy next to Vaccaro is. I assume that's Adrian Phillips, but he missed the spring so it's hard to fairly gauge that right now.
Are there any good TE prospects for 2014? I can't believe Texas isn't looking at Christian Morgan anymore. Is the plan only 1 TE this year?
I know a few Texas commits have told me they're also surprised Morgan isn't really on UT's radar right now. The plan is probably 2 TEs, with the second being Jeremiah Gaines or Trent Gow.
So please tell me that Texas has a shot at landing that stud Marcell Harris. Also, will Maurice Smith or Antwuan Davis commit?
Texas has a shot at landing that stud Marcell Harris. I'd guess Vonn Bell likes Texas a little more than Harris does, but even landing just one of those two would be impressive.
Has your sunburn subsided from the Dallas Nike Camp?
Yes it has! Thanks for asking.
who do u see as the next Texas commitment?
Give me Maurice Smith on this one. He is going to Alabama on Saturday, though, and will witness the Crimson Tide play their A-Day spring game in front of 90,000+. He should be much closer to a decision after the weekend.
Any chance Jalen Overstreet gets some chances in some trick play schemes to utilize his athleticism and arm?
No doubt. Mack Brown said he'll redshirt Brewer if possible but still hasn't said much about his plans for Overstreet. It'll be very interesting to see who emerges in fall camp as the guy who can replace Fozzy as the leader of the Wild offense.
I see Bergeron being the starter, Malcolm being a heavy asset and Gray taking over the Wild as the new Fozzy.. Your takes?
Good take, though Wild is still very up in the air. Get ready, folks. This is the kind of stuff everyone will be bickering about this fall: Did Bergeron get enough carries? Should Brown be the starter? Why isn't Gray getting more snaps? Comes with the territory of having so many good backs.
do u see texas taking another lb or de? and who would it be?
Defensive end, yes. I still like Texas' chances with Torrodney Prevot. If they don't get him, they probably look to take another defensive tackle. Linebacker, I doubt it. They were lucky to get two. Then again, maybe another spot opens up if Texas has a few transfers after this season.
Texas undoubtedly has the best running back corps in the Big 12, who would u say has the best receiving corps?
Good question, Brady. Baylor had a very good one last year and brings back Terrance Williams. The first answer that came to mind was Oklahoma, but then I looked up West Virginia's stats. They're pretty loaded with an impressive trio of young guys in Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin and Ivan McCartney.
Whats d possibility of ODOM going to the Rockets.
He can't go anywhere this season since the Mavs didn't cut him in time (I believe the deadline was March 23?). What a wasted year for him. He's probably best off trying to get back with the Lakers. I'm sure Khloe would appreciate that.
Who do you think will get the more PT between freshmen. Jinkens, Santos or Timbo Cole?
I'll take Santos, but I think Jinkens is the kind of guy who could make a killer impact on special teams right away too. Coming out of the spring, I think the LB plan of Hicks, Edmond and Cobbs looks a little better than expected.
Do you see any suprise offers coming after spring evaluations? And if so any predictions other than Vincent Taylor who has been on the cuspse here recently?
That's a good question. I think you could see an offer to a tight end - Gaines or Gow. I'm also interested to see if another in-state defensive back like Chevoski Collins or Kameron Miles gets one. Perhaps that depends on how quickly Davis and Smith reach their decisions.
Will the Texas coaching staff name David ash the starter before the season starts? Or do you think they will keep the option of starting case McCoy throughout the season?
Both. I'm guessing they name Ash the starter a couple days before the opener and then get McCoy a bunch of snaps against Wyoming. Whether it is or isn't, they'll continue to call it a daily competition.
Besides the big names coming out of spring, who do you think will have a breakout season next year?
Besides the stars of the spring, I'll say Mykkele Thompson, Demarco Cobbs and M.J. McFarland. I like Duke Thomas, too. Of the incoming freshmen, Johnathan Gray and Torshiro Davis are the easiest choices.
Can Texas basketball win the big 12 title next session?.
So hard to say at this point. I like Baylor and Texas right now. Having Missouri out of the picture helps, and Kansas loses Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor. Somehow, Self will find a way to produce a solid team without them.
so will texas offer cole luke if davis or smith take long to commit
Depends on what's considered a long time. By the end of April? May? I don't think they'd play games to mess with Davis and Smith's plans. Best guess is the offer goes out if one commits elsewhere, though I'm sure Akina will do more scouting of Luke this spring and may change his mind.
if texas miss on prevot who is plan be
Plan B is looking like Vincent Taylor, though UT coaches would almost certainly prefer Justin Manning if he wants to be a Longhorn.
More likely to be All Big 12, Jackson Jeffcoat or Jordan Hicks?
Gimme Jeffcoat. I think he's primed for a big, big year.
What teams do u see Texas losing to this year?
That's the question all Texas fans will debate over these next four months. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think there's 7-8 wins on the schedule and 4-5 toss-ups. If they split the toss-ups (Oklahoma, TCU, West Virginia, Kansas State), it's a 9-10 win team.
do you see miles or massington getting a later offer
Miles is more likely, I think, since Texas is pretty much done when it comes to WRs besides Ra'Shaad Samples. I don't know that Miles has a ton of interest in Texas anymore, though, after not getting an offer at his junior day visit.
how long do you think Coach Brown is going to coach for? or is it mroe of winning another naty or two?
Well, the real question here is probably what's his goal? Is it to win that national title and go out on top? Or is it to get to a few BCS games and make sure the program is on the right track? Another factor that intrigues me is Harsin and Diaz. No way one of them is named coach-in-waiting, but what will Texas do when they start getting big-time offers?
Why have the offers at the secondary positions been so few and slow to come? It seems like most of the other schools had no problem evaluating the top talent around the nation. Its possible that Byndum/Diggs may both leave early and depth at safety (or who will start when Vaccaro/Phillips leave) is a bit of a mystery. Do the coaches know something we don't? Is the next Earl Thomas/Cedric Griffin on campus, waiting for Akina to turn him from a RB into a stud DB?
A very solid question. From what I'm told, Akina just likes to take more time on his evaluations of these guys. Perhaps that's because he'll need ones who have what it takes to play early in case you do see those starters go pro early. As for your Thomas/Griffin question, I'll throw one name out there: Daje Johnson. I know TCU coaches were very sold on him being a seriously talented corner. If he doesn't like where he sit on the depth chart, he could move back to the secondary someday.
if samples doesn't commit who will texas go after
They'll go even harder after Dontre Wilson, I'm guessing. Don't know that there's another WR out there who immediately gets an offer, but keep an eye on Massington and Robbie Rhodes in that scenario.
Do you think torshiro davis has a huge impact in 2012? What role do you see daje johnson playing in the offense?
Shiro could be a potent weapon right away subbing in on pass rushing situations. He's a guy who will find a way to do a lot with the few snaps he gets early on. As for Daje, he could be one of the answers at punt returns. Hard to know how they'll find him a ton of snaps on offense considering all the guys who need the ball on their hands, but a D.J. Monroe-type role wouldn't surprise me.
I'll take a couple more questions, guys. Thanks for giving me some good ones today, it's been fun.
As a Cornhusker, do you miss the Battle of the Big Reds every November? Do you think the schools will ever renew the rivalry and begin playing every year again? Similar to when the Horns were in SWC, and Nebraska was in the Big 8, with Texas being OU's main OOC game.
I miss a lot of Nebraska's Big 12 tradition, sure. Since nonconference schedules are so locked up for the future, I guess the only thing you can do is hope some of these former Big 12 schools will want to play their old rivals again a decade from now. I know I'd like to see it.
Ill answer that Carter.. "David Ash" will prolly have a breakout season. especially comparing to last season.
Did you know: David Ash threw 4 touchdowns and 8 interceptions last year. He'll be better this fall.
One last question...
Hey Max, having a debate with some people right now: What's the best Pixar movie? I gotta go with Up, but I'd honestly be ok with someone naming any of the Toy Story movies, Wall-E, The Incredibles, or Monsters Inc. What say you, knower of all things Texas football?!
I've got a lot of love for Up. Not much love for Cars. My top five would be the three Toy Story movies, Up and probably The Incredibles. Toy Story 3 was really, really good, but I have to take the original Toy Story as my favorite Pixar film.
Thanks again for some great questions today, and be sure to head over to HornsNation.com for all the latest Texas news. Have a great day.
