Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Hey sportsnation, lets talk hoops. No quote from me today. I want you to send me a favorite line and I'll post the good ones.

Jason (NY)

As a Bulls fan I'm not looking forward to possibly running into Boston in the playoffs. They're playing at such a high level right now and I think Rondo deserves to be in the MVP discussions. Can you see them challenging Miami and the Bulls for the East?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Yes I can. Shut down d and an inspired KG. That's a formula for winning.

Josh (ATL)

You are the Heat.....you lost shamefully in Boston 9 days earlier and were now on your home floor with your arsenal of talent and serious revenge on your mind. And yet you still lose pretty easily to the Celtics. How can Miami seriously be a viable playoff contender if they had everything in their favor last night and still lost? You think the Bulls, Spurs, Celtics, or Thunder would EVER have lost a revenge game at home to anyone?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

I think games in April rarely suggest anything too meaningful for the postseason.

Josh (Chicago)

I ready anything I can get my hands on about the NBA, books, blogs, articles, and chats. What are some of your favorites? I recently finished simmons' book of basketball and shaqs book.

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Are you ready to get serious? Then read guys like Wooden, Knight, Brown, Smith, etc. Phil Jackson's forst was great as well. Majerus had a good one.

Jackson (New York)

Remember when some people thought Norris Cole would be a better player than Kyrie? Wasn't that funny?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

It's why we don't throw parades after a month of action.

Eric (London)

Is the sky the limit for Kenneth Faried?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

No-I don't trust he'll ever develop an incredible skill game. But can he be a long term starter? Of course.

doug (wilmington nc)

how good of a defensive player do you think Iman shumpert can be?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Very good. But I have my doubts that he'll be a starter over the long haul.

Davion (CLEveland)

Do you think anthony davis will get bullied his first few years in the league? He is awful thin for a big. What position will he actually play?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

He'll be a 4 and he'll be terrific in a season or two at most. Game is called much tighter in the pro's. Pekovic, though, might break him in two.

Dan (South Beach)

That's not a knife. THIS is a knife!

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Nice. Croc Dundee!! right?

Julius (Atlanta)

Frequent reader of your chats, and you post my questions regularly so for that, thanks! Question, Which team right now looks most dangerous, OKC, San Antonio, or Memphis?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

It's a tie.

Step (Toronto)

Hey David, longtime raps fan up here....what do we do with demar? Is he legitimate guard in the NBA for a competitive team (which I hope we're aiming for)...draft another SG like Beal if available, or is it redundant?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Shooting guards that can't shoot always worry me, unless they are named D Wade.

Jimmy (Memphis)

Why isn't Lester Hudson receiving the same praise as Jeremy Lin? 25/8/6, 26/4/3, 23/2/7 (in his last 3 games) ain't too shabby. And he's playing fewer minutes than Lin.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I thought the same thing the other day. Could it be that hype in New York is stronger?

Bodhi (Kissimmee)

Is Derrick Rose overrated ?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

If you think he's the best player in the league, then yes. If you think he's a rock star and an amazing talent, then no.

Rick (Kansas)

Thomas Robinson announced he was going to the NBA (not surprising). Do you see him being better than a lot of the disappointing Kansas big men (Aldrich, Morris Twins, Arthur) that have gone to the NBA recently?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I do. Great quickness and toughness.

pat (rick)

Dear David: "He needs another year of seasoning at [his current alma mater]" is something we hear quite often this time of year. What coaches/coaching teams in the pros and in the NCAA, and what programs / teams do you think are really good at player development?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I think the whole notion is absurd. NBA players are drafted based largely on potential. End of story. Please ignore any comments to the contrary. Now, can a student go back to school and prove that he actually does have NBA potential? Yes.

TC (Chicago)

"You think I watch your movies Harry? I've seen better film on teeth."Do you think Rip has enough left in the tank to take some scoring pressure off Rose? He certainly looked good last night, but will it last?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Is that "Get Shorty"? I'm not sold on Rip. Yet. Need to see more.

Craig (CA)

You should drink coffee. It's awesome. Not drinking it is dumb.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Then as someone who has never had even a sip, I must be the dumbest dude on two legs.

Wayne (California)

Yep, it's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

50% of the time it works every time.

Gary (Phoenix)

Your thought on Anchorman 2?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

My wife currently has his picture as her Facebook profile, so that's all I have to say about that.

Playtime (Valpo)

In reference to the book question, if you had to pick one to give as a gift to a young, aspiring basketball coach, which book would it be?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Depends on the coach. He needs to develop a philosophy first. And it has to be organic.

Daniel (ohio)

if you could have it your way, how many years would you want to make players stay in college before they could be draft eligible?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Nil.

Andrew (SF)

Do you agree with yanking Evan Turner from the starting lineup?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

In the sense that Collins was looking to create a spark, yes. Putting a finger into the hole in the dam, though, metaphorically speaking.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

your name Ryan (Woodland)

Mr. Thorpe, who is the best case scenario for the Kings in the draft assuming we pick fourth or worse?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Ask me again once we know the final draft list.

Playtime (Valpo)

What type of philosophy? A basketball system philosophy (e.g. type of offensive system)? Or a leadership philosophy?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

It's all tied in. I feel Kurt Rambis hijacked Phil's, and that is why he was so horrible. He needed to be himself.

Jackson (IA)

John, I was first team all-state. I can put the ball wherever I want to. I'll make it rain out here.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

Wedding Crashers. Classic.

Nathan (Portland)

The blazers front office is pushing the fact that they are "retooling" not "rebuilding." Is retooling even realistic with the state of the team, or is this just the front office trying to pull the wool over the eyes of potential season ticket holders?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I think they are dead on. That team is closer to contending that to starting over.

sally (chicago)

Assuming Rip is healthy throughout the playoffs, does Brewer or Korver suffer most?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Tough question. Brewer is vastly underrated. Probably Korver unless Rip can't shoot straight.

Mary (Dallas)

David, you always seem to have a nice, beautiful tan. Do you spend lots of time laying out at the beach? Or do you visit the tanning salons?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I live in Florida and am on the baseball field 4 days a week typically, and on the hoops court 2-3 days a week. One beach visit since summer.

Sean (facebook friend) (SLC, Utah)

Why are T.T. and Florida St. Coach so great at coaching d? Is it their ability to have everyone buy in? holding them accountable? or just really good at teaching rotations and indv/team d?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

They teach every skill, big and small. Nuance and big picture. Sound in philosophy and in strategy. Great at adjustments. And they both know how ti inspire players to live and die on that end of the court. If I owned an NBA team I would have hired TT 5 years ago, and I would hire Stan Jones immediately to be my defensive coordinator today.

Sean (facebook friend) (SLC, Utah)

Have you had much time to watch the Jazz, and if so what do you think of Corbin? I like the guy, but feel like he's failed to make some obvious adjustments at key point in games (subbing Favors for Jefferson on the last play of a game on D) etc.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Coaching is a profession that can not be mastered fast. I think Corbin is doing impressive things. I see more good things for him going forward.

Sam (Boston)

Teague and Smith have carried the Hawks this year without Horford. What's their ceiling with Horfy back, and is the future not awful in ATL with those three still young and in their primes?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

With Al healthy, they can win a playoff series. Maybe two. Last year's Memphis?

Chris (Porterville, CA)

So Coach, not to try and emulate (steal) yours, what is your coaching philosophy?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I liked to play fast, deny all ball side passes and every inbounds pass. Pound the paint early with post ups and seals, plus hard dribble drives.

chilly (norfolk, va)

everybody talks about the bobcats getting anthony davis but did anyone in charlotte management think about the effect that all of this losing is going to have on their young players? they are the joke of the league, this might scar them for years

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Excellent point, but scarring would only come in another year or two. Wizards grabbed Nene in part to start getting their guys to know what it's like to be a solid team.

Leonsis (DC)

Thorpedo, what are your thoughts on Kevin Seraphin? As a Wiz fan, the guy has had me mesmerized for two years. He might not have any idea what he's doing out there, but I'm also not sure if there is a big man in the league with better touch. Have you had a chance to analyze his play?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

He's coming on!! They have been high on him all along. Nice to see Kevin being the player they hoped he could be. More good things to come as he gains confidence.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

Sam (Nashville)

David, please keep doing the Truehoop TV stuff. You and Henry are great. I only hope espn tv does not steal you away. My wife says you are "easy to watch" and I think I know what that means. :) Keep up the great analysis.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Thanks, and there is no worry about tv. I was born to be a dot com/podcast guy.

Matt (Irvine)

Hi coach, love your chats.I don't mind Gasol getting pau-sterized by Blake Griffin, but he always has difficult time with physical power forwards. I look for Blair to have his way with Pau tonight. What can he do to stand toe to toe with them.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Well, avoiding getting a forearm to the face is a good start.

Markus (Germany)

Not trying to overreact, but will Dwight Howard ever get it? I don't think it is likely at this point that he will go down as an all-time top notch center like Hakeem and Shaq and will at best be Zo with more talent and much lesser heart. AGree?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Yes I think he'll continue to mature.

Harley (Billings)

Thanks for sharing with us your article on Kawhi Leonard. If DeMarcus Cousins had been drafted by the Spurs or Celtics, do you think he'd be an even more dominant player (statistically speaking)?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Possibly. He's a more challenging guy to properly motivate. Evans would have been better off I'd guess. But Cousins is coming on...

shawn (sacramento)

Wouldn't it make sense to do a baseball style system for the draft? They can either enter right out of high school, possibly entering the minor league system, or if they go to school they have to stay for 3 years. Seems like the best of both worlds--the LeBrons go to the NBA and the others go to school..

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Make sense for whom? Irving is doing fine, Rose, Westbrook, KG, etc.

Lee (Indy)

In the Grantland article about Rubio last week, it said he chose to shoot with his right hand, but he's left eye dominant. I know that's not the whole problem with his shooting, but is it part of it?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Possibly, but I'd only know after fixing his broken mechanics.

Chuck (Rip City)

David, Portland still doesnt have a GM. You interested?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

No, though Abbott and Hollinger rave about that city.

HeatFan5 (MIA)

Not to overreact, but shouldn't the Heat try to mix it up instead of overloading on help defense on virtually every play? Going to some man-to-man might have helped slow Boston's shooting last night. They were just knocking down a lot of wide open jumpers all night...

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I think teams play percentages more in the regular season. In a playoff game, that changes.

Don (Edmond OK)

If the Thunder can't pay both Harden and Ibaka, which would you keep?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Harden.

Drew (Williamsport)

Which rookie who had a dissapointing year could you see being a star in the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Not sure about "star", but D Williams can be far more productive and efficient.

Aaron (Los Angeles)

From your chat today, it appears you are somewhat discounting regular season I see, so do you have the Heat in the finals? Please don't say it depends on this or that?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

I think they are the strongest bet, yes.

Bizzle (Virgin Islands)

I think Houston should trade Lowry, Scola and Martin and try to get better talent via the draft..They have been treading water for years n to get good you have to become bad!!!what do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

I think you need to read Truehoop a lot more.

Scrapper (Chicago)

Chances that a team other than Miami or Chicago get out of the Eastern Conference?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Let's say, %Miami 51Chicago 40Boston 6Orlando 3

Bob (D.C.)

David - Allow me to dream ... Orlando fires SVG ... Wizards win lottery (& take Davis obviously) ... Wizards hire SVG. Would that not go a long way towards eliminating the cultural malaise that has saddled the organization for literally decades? And do you think SVG would be up for it?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

That is truly winning the lottery.

Marvin Williams (Atlanta)

"Let's say, %Miami 51Chicago 40Boston 6Orlando 3"Coach you said ATL could win two rounds! You forgot us!

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Not in my mind, but in reality.

will (st paul)

who does kidd-gilchrist remind you of in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Gerald Wallace mostly.

Jose (California)

Are you a baseball fan?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Rays baby. And the Cardinals in the Countryside Little League Majors division.

Steve (Cleveland)

Can Tristan Thompson be an all-star an contributor on a contender? He seems to have no clue on offense (most of his scoring comes off dunks and put backs) and his lack of improvement on that end throughout the season is troubling.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Yes he's another rook who should get much much better. Think Bynum is good now? How was he as a rook?

Xander (Philly)

Is Evan Turner a.) being coached by the wrong guy, and under the right guidance could be a very good player OR b.) just not all that good?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

He's probably better off playing on another roster. Needs to be a pg I'd guess.

Mike (Chicago)

Why is Doug Collins coaching career like groundhog day?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

He goes to the whip immediately and never stops.

Drew (Williamsport)

All NBA: Westbrook, Bryant, Durant, LeBron, Dwight?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Need K Love in there. M

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Need K Love in there.

tim (space)

Do you see Mark Jackson as the long term answer at coach for Golden State?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Not yet I don't.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

That's all I have for today. Thanks everyone. Have a great rest of the week. Be safe.
