Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. Nice weekend of fights with Katsidis back on FNF tonight and a split-site PPV tomorrow with Marquez-Fedchenko and Rios-Abril plus lots of stuff coming up. There a bunch of new blogs up this week, news stories and my feature on Marquez, so check it all out and let's get to it.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Can't wait 2 watch 24/7 Mayweather vs. Cotto 2morrow night!

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Another things in boxing this weekend! First ep is Saturday night at 9:45 pm ET/PT on HBO.

Dan (Boston)

Is Joe Calzaghe a first ballot HOFer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I think he will be, yes.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Call me crazy....but I wouldn't go out of my way to provide Rios with extra motivation leading up to a fight. Don't poke the bear...

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

LOL, exactly. I think the Rios-Abril fight will be action.

Richard (Indianapolis)

Who has been the biggest mainstream star in boxing over the last 15 years? Tyson, Oscar, Floyd, somebody else?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I would add Pacquiao to that list but those are the guys. Holyfield too was also huge mainstream. My mom knows who he is too.

Ivan (Vancouver)

Dan, any news about Gamboa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I heard he ordered the PPV this weekend and then canceled it suddenly.

Charles (DFW)

How long before you think Kelly Pavlik is back in the ring? After watching the ease he had with the Jaco fight, would it be better for him to do an Arreola and stay busy for the next few months?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

He'll be back in the ring most like to headline on ESPN2 on June 8 in Vegas the night before the Pacquiao-Bradley fight. Mike Lee will also be on the card.

Charles (DFW)

Has Bob Arum indicated any other possibilities as headliners for Cowboys Stadium on July 14 besides Marquez-Rios and maybe Nonito?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Donaire would be the co-feature on that show. But it's all up in the air until we see what happens this weekend.

Mike (Yankee stadium)

Whats up dan sitting at yankee stadium waiting for first pitch what are your picks for this weekend

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Nice. I will have the game on. Want to see Posada throw out the first pitch! I think the favorites win this weekend -- Marquez and Rios.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

Happy Friday the 13th, Dan! Be careful TOEday, fight freaks...

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Excellent advice.

Julian (Cedar Falls, IA)

Alright, get the predictions out of the way. I have Marquez by late rd KO and Rios by mid-rd TKO... Also, what did you think of Faceoff? It was weird!

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

This edition of Face Off was the worst one in the series. It was only 15 minutes but it felt like an hour.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Not sure how much Katsidis has left, but he's always great to watch, and a really nice guy. Wish him the best for tonight's fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Exactly. He's moving up to 140 and not facing a world beater. If he can't shine tonight it might be the end.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Dan, is Urango's retirement and comeback one of the more bizarre you can think of?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Not at all. Why would it be? Lots of guys retire for a couple of years and come back.

Robert (San Diego, CA )

If we don't ever see Mayweather vs. Pacman will we ever see Mayweather vs. Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

We probably wont see either.

Alex Naldrett (London)

What is your opinion on Kell Brook? Because many believe that he is an elite welterweight already and would beat big names such as Ortiz, Mosley and Berto.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

He has to do a lot more to prove he is elite as far as I am concerned. I'm not saying I dont like him, I'm just saying the jury is out. He has not accomplished anything yet. He is a contender to watch. I have yet to see anything that makes me say that he will be "special." But let's see what happens when he faces a prime top-10 guy, not Matthew Hatton.

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

Congratulations to the NO Saints on naming an interim, interim head coach. Well done, my friends.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Pay the man his small sanctioning fee, of course, Shirley!

Justin (Boston)

What's up Danimal? Do you agree with the recent blog post that says Mayweather is in the conversation with SRR as Greatest of All Time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

No.

Tim (Alexandria)

Is Hopkins-Dawson one of the least hyped major fights you've ever seen? I know the action of the last one was putrid, but this is still a major fight in a historically major division.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

They're fighting again???????????????????

Robert (San Diego, CA )

In the Mayweather-Cotto's Faceoff with Max Kellerman, Mayweather said he is ok with his leagcy. Are you ok with his legacy? do you classify him as an all-time great?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Mayweather is an all-time great. But the question will always be how much greater could he have been if he had faced a series of certain guys when they were prime -- Cotto, Mosley, Margarito, Pacquiao, Paul Williams, etc... He faced none in their prime.

Charles (DFW)

So how much time does Leon Margules say Urango still has on his contract? I thought contracts ran out at a specific time, or did the clock stop when Urango retired, if in fact he did "officially" retire?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Typically, if you retire, the clock stops. Had Urango wanted to come back no problem. But he was, as I understand it, obligated to go through his promoter to take a fight. I'm sure Leon would have been happy to set up a fight for him.

Roberto (Charlotte, NC)

How many PPV buys do you predict for Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Minimal. I think they'd be thrilled if it does 50,000.

Nicholas (Montreal )

What is the news on the Pascal-Cloud fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Still in talks. Ball is basically in Showtime's court as I understand things.

Brad (Jonesboro, AR)

Hey Rafael Danal, is it just me or has there been ZERO hypeabout Hopkins-Dawson II? I know it's a likely snooze fest, but these are two prime LH's and some would say the best two in the world.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

They are fighting???????????????

Duff (Boston, MA)

Hey Dan, is there any news about a possible co-feature for the Pacman-Bradley PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Could be Arce. Mike Jones-Randall Bailey also will likely be on the card. Also Rigondeaux in a fight is being discussed.

Mike (DC)

Are they just gonna scrap Broner for 5/19? A little more than a month away and no opponent yet

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

No, he is scheduled to still fight. Can you make 130? You might be better than the crap that has been discussed.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

Any concerns about the Chavez-Lee fight being in Texas?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I'm concerned about a bar fight if it is in Texas.

Derek (Boulder CO)

Dan, what kind of drugs do you have picked out for your trip across the pond?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

TBA. For those wondering what he is talking about, when Epix televises Bute-Froch on May 26 we will be calling the fight from ringside in Nottingham, not the studio in NY. So I will be making my first trip to the UK.

Al M (NYC)

Nice To see epix flying you out for Bute-Froch, will that be your first time calling a fight rindside?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Yes. I have been ringside to do brief commentary on ESPN2 several times but never to actually call the fight, so I am excited about it.

Aaron (MI)

Any news on the next Andre Dirrell fight? Looked good in his last and haven't heard anything. Did he officially split with Al Haymen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

He says he has split from Al. There has been zero news.

John (Barcelona)

Dan - International Freak! I must say, I love JMM and I hope for another great performance tomorrow. The man has earned all the accolades he gets!

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I've bee a JMM fan since the days when he was coming up fighting at the Forum in LA. He's a great fighter and so this weekend he is not in the biggest fight ever but I am happy to watch him do his thing anytime.

JR (Los Angeles, CA)

who would you like to see devon alexander fight in aug. since most of the top guys at 147 are tied up or would be to early for them to return and fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Good question. You're right -- a lot of the top guys are tied up. So I am not sure who will legitimately be available.

Bearman (Biggest Little City)

Dan-a-maniac, was talking with a bud the other day and I brought up a point he couldn't believe. Vitali is the only lineal champ that has not been knocked down at any point of his career. Some debate he was never lineal champ but I consider him such after he beat sanders after lewis retiring (he was clearly #1 heavy at the time). Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

He was lineal after Lewis retired and he beat Sanders. And he obviously has a great chin. I can't say I've ever seen legitimately rocked by a punch and that includes some bombs from Sanders and Lennox. He will be far more appreciated years after he is retired than he is now, kind of how Lennox is.

Robert (San Diego, CA )

can you please Stop checking your bets on your Ipad and answer our questions lol.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Charles (DFW)

I was reading in Ring Magazine that HBO once offered $32 million for Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis to meet. That's almost their whole yearly boxing budget now. What happened?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

That would have been a PPV.

Chris (Brooklyn)

As a trilogy package, which one would you take over the other. Morales vs Barrera or Ward vs Gatti

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

If I HAD to pick just one to watch, I'd have to go with Morales-Barrera. Overall more action-packed fights (slim, granted), 12 round world title bouts too.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Who do you give a better chance at the upset this weekend, Fedchenko or Abril?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Probably Abril.

Ry (OH)

Dan, who do you like in the Alvarado/Herrera scrap? Seems like that should be the most competitive fight of the PPV.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I love Alvarado in that one.

Sam (London)

What do you think of Nathan Cleverly's latest opponent? Frank Warren needs to put him in with a live body if he's to call himself a world champion

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Terrible.

Jackson (IA)

Hey Dan! Sad part about Mayweather is...I THINK he really is one of, if not the, best of all time. But if you don't prove it...you don't get the title. Right now...top 30. If he had fought those guys, I think he would really win all of them...and he'd be sitting in the top 3. Shame, shame, shame...

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

You're right. You can say you're the best all you want but you do have to prove it. So when you are splitting hairs at that elite level, other guys have the superior resume. Not necessarily skills, but wins in the bank over other prime guys.

Mike (DC)

Ball is in Showtimes court on Cloud-Pascal?! What could the hold up be?! Is it because neither guy is w/ Haymon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!

Steve (DC)

Since the anniversary was this week, who did you have winning Whitaker or De La Hoya?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Oscar very close. I was not covering boxing at that time. Just watched it on PPV.

David (Quebec city)

Any truth to the rumours that Andre Ward is negociating a deal with HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

They've had discussions but Showtime still has rights.

Eric (Omaha)

Dan - Has Floyd ever really been knocked down? I know he took a knee against Hernandez but I thought I read it was because Floyd broke his hand and not from getting hit

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

He had an official knockdown called against him in the Carlos Hernandez fight but it was bogus. He hurt his hand on a punch and touched his glove to the mat. He was not knocked down. But he was legitimately dropped by Zab Judah but the referee missed the call. So he has been down once officially on a bogus call but down for real on a missed call. So once.

Tony Yayo (Southside Jamaica Queens)

Why is Katsidas fighting on FNF? Isn't he a big time fighter? Saw him vs Marquez and while back and he knocked him down

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Because he's a fighter and this was available and because he has lost recent fights nobody is paying him a ton to be on big shows against big opponents right now. He needs to work back to that level. This is the start.

Charles (DFW)

So is the Showtime "quadruple-header" set for June 2 the first you've heard of a major network showing that many fights on one broadcast? If so, kudos to Stephen Espinoza, especially if they can sneak in a couple more undercards on Extreme.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

No, it's happened before years ago on Showtime but it is rare.

Anthony (PA)

Dan, if Joe Cortez had stopped Pacquiao-Marquez 1 in the round 1, would that have made a significant dip in Marquez's stature/ legacy or would it be dismissed as a bad matchup ala Joe Frazier's losses to Foreman?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It would have definitely diminished things for him because there probably never would have been a second or third fight with Pacquiao, which is largely how Marquez has built his stature.

Michael (Toronto)

Further to your Vitali point, I kind of get the feeling that one day we'll be reading articles lamenting that boxing can't find a classy, sportsmanlike, dominant multi-lingual champion who stays in perfect shape and has great power and chin.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Agreed. The negativity against the Klitschkos by many US fans is misplaced and misguided and a shame.

tommy (Chicagao)

Is the Austin Trout vs. Delvin Rodriguez fight a definite go and if so who do you think wins

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

It's likely yes. Is it signed on paper yet? I dont think so.

CM (Toronto)

Legitimate question here. Do you think part of Schaefer's contract renegotiation included getting the power to eradicate Oscar's train wreck Twitter account?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

LOL!

the duder (Portland, Oregon)

DTM, Do you find it strange that Floyd will gamble on anything except when it comes to the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Interesting point.

California boxing (Ventura)

I'm very disappointed this this PPV event. $44 for a less than exceptional card. I love to see Rios, Marques, Alvarado fight. Can't we see these guys fight each other? I can't get myself to pay? Boxing promoters, boxing fans are not buying it, at least I'm not. Sorry

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

So dont buy it, that's cool. It's a neccessary evil. This was supposed to be Rios-Gamboa on HBO. Gamboa bailed, HBO didnt want Rios-Abril. So should Top Rank just cancel the show? They have contractual obligations to provide fights for guys. Rios did nothing wrong. Why should he be punished? Same for the guys on the undercard. Think of it as though you're paying $45 for a seat on your couch because you cant be at the arena. I have no problem with PPVs like this. I like Rios and Marquez and want to see them fight. And I think Alvarado-Herrera is a solid matchup too. So the product is available and fight fans can buy or not buy. But I dont blame Top Rank one iota for doing this on PPV when no network wanted to put up money for it. Top Rank is taking all of the risk and probably will lose some money on the event. But it has obligations to keep and the show must go on.

Mike (DC)

Theres were rumors about Andre Ward going on 6/2? That's obviously not happening. When will we see his return?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

That was a false report. He was never fighting on June 2.

Charles (DFW)

If Katsidis wins tonight and looks good, and if Alvarado wins tomorrow, could you see them meeting up next, perhaps in July?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I'd never say never. Would be a bloody fun fight.

Leo (Los Angeles)

Has there been any word for the Berto vs Ortiz undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

The Showtime co-feature is Humberto Soto vs Lucas Matthysse.

BK (Rochester, NY)

Dan, I am going to be in Saratoga on May 5th, any local spots you suggest to catch the fight at?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

My old hometown but no idea where they show fights. Haven't been there in several years.

Gumer Boytano (Monterrey, Mexico)

Any possibility of a Mayweather vs. Canelo fight this year or ever?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I would say it's possible at the end of the year.

The Iron Sheik (Teran E-ran)

Dan Raefel you are better than Gene Mean.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Thank you, Shiekie Baby.

bill (pgh)

I love Monte Meza Clay, good kid, great story, had a good amatuer career, always comes to fight...BUT Broner is on such another level, it's a 2 round fight, if that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I wrote that in my blog yesterday.

Derek (Boulder CO)

Have you seen Pac man's Hennessy commercial? I am surprised they didn't try to get Floyd to that one.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I saw it the other night for the first time. Was on during SportsCenter I think.

Robert (San Diego, CA )

If Canelo beats Sugar Shane will that be considered as a legitimate win or just a win against a downhill opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

A win is a win and it will be against a great, but faded, name.

Charles (DFW)

Maybe we should have Ricardo Torres come out of retirement to fight Urango. Winner gets the pig farm.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I like it.

Chris (Brroklyn)

Dan, is JMM's fight on PPV because HBO didn't think it was worthy of spending their budget on it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

When Gamboa dropped out HBO decided it did not want to spend money on a different Rios fight. That is HBO's decision. But Top Rank decided to mount a promotion on its own and HBO agreed to help distribute the PPV and market it.

Sam (London)

Dan, what did you make of the reports that Andre Ward was disappointed Bute signed to fight Froch? Why should Bute sit around waiting for Ward when he said he hadn't earned a shot!

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Agreed. All due respect to Ward, but he is way off on this one. It was the Ward camp that said it wasnt interested in Bute right after the Super Six. So what should Bute do? Wait around? Not.

Roberto (Charlotte, NC)

Marquez vs Rios doesn't happen, how would you feel about Katsidis vs Rios?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Depends on how Katsidis looks tonight.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Big respect to Top Rank putting up an extra $50,000 to the winner of Rios-Abril. Stokes some more interest in what is already a pretty good replacement for Gamboa. TR probably won't make much profit off this show, but its nice to see a promotional company actually putting up some decent money to market the event as best as possible!

al (denver)

ok, of the four fighters of this generation who are arguably great (hopkins, mayweather, pacquiao, marquez), whose resume do you like the best?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Hopkins has a great resume of wins. Pacquiao too. I'd say Mayweather is third in that group and then Marquez.

Billy Parham (NY)

Dan, the issue re: the PPV tomorrow night isn't the fact that it had to be done to keep both guys busy - we get that. It's the fact that it's $45.00! I bet if they priced it at $30.00 they'd get a bunch of more buys.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I dont agree with that. And at $30 they are undercutting themselves for future PPVs.

CM (Toronto)

One thing I think that was missed here on the chats... how about Oscar tweeting that fans can find out all they need to know about future GBP events by checking out Ring Magazine/RingTV. Pure propoganda. Fair to say that is the final nail in the coffin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Not a final nail, just one of the many.

Wade (ATL)

Dan, is Tyson Fury a legit Heavyweight contender or more of a prospect at this point? What do you think his career holds?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

He's definitely a guy to watch. He beat an out-of-shape Chisora for his best win. He's big but not a big puncher. Seems to have an iffy chin. But he is also young. So he has time to develop.

jose (miami, fl)

Hey dan thanks for the post about the Mayweather-Cotto theater website (www.fathomevents.com). There's a whole listing of movie theaters on there, very informative! I just bought my tickets online!

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Glad to help the Fight Freaks!

Jon (Ottawa)

What's going on with Malik "80-72" Scott?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Probably hoping to someday be Malik "100-90" Scott.

Robby (CA)

Dan, In your opinion when Mayweather beat Corrales, was Diego in his prime? I think that is Mayweather's most impressive victory.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

It was his most impressive win as far as I am concerned. Chico was undefeated and had only given up his title to take the fight instead of a mandatory.

Derek (Boulder CO)

Did you really just have to explain why this weekend's fight is ppv again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Yes, because some Freaks aren't the sharpest tooks in the shed.

Steve (Kansas)

Why did HBO even bother putting together a final cut of the Mayweather Cotto Faceoff after they taped it? Especially if that, I'm asumming, was the best stuff they had. The only thing it made me want to do is hit the FW button, not buy the PPV lol.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

The general consensus from Fight Freaks in the chats and on Twitter is that this Face Off was, well, horrible.

Paul (Concord, CA)

I thought JMM did enough in his last fight to beat Pacquiao. The previous two fights could have gone either way. Can you remember another fight trilogy that has ever been this close or as debatable?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Nope. I was at all three Pacquiao-Marquez fights and I thought all three were excellent fights and very, very competitive.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Glad to hear your coming across the pond! I'll be at the fight, guarantee that the atmosphere will be sensational!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I look forward toe it.

Richard (NY)

DTM, will there be additional Fight Camp 360 episodes for Berto Ortiz 2 , given the injury and alll that drama?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Good question. I am not sure. There was supposed to be for the fight before it was postponed. I would imagine there will be for the rescheduled fight.

Chris (Los Angeles, CA)

UFC on Fuel 3 comes to Fairfax Virginia next month (5/15). Will DTM be making an appearance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Unlikely.

Tom (Sacramento)

Did you see HBO Portrait of a Fighter - Canelo - last night? Not sure what they were going for but they missed the mark, kinda left me saying "what was that all about?"

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I have it on my DVR but have not watched it yet.

Brandon (DSM)

Man on man those Brits REALLY overrate their fighters...

pedro (miami)

it is said rigondeaux teon kennedy could be in the pac man card , you think rigo against arce can be made in stead? that would be great , any news on rigo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

That fight is not set. There has also been discussion of Rigondeaux vs Jeffrey Mathubela from South Africa in a 122 unification.

jose (miami, fl)

Yanks home opener at 1pm, you watching?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Yes, sir.

Charles (DFW)

Ok, after last Saturday, I have to ask again. Is Vic Darchinyan a Hall of Famer because of what he did at 112 and 115, or did the disaster at 118 hurt him too much?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Vic is not a HOFer to me.

Chris (Chatsworth)

Dano, I know you're a fan, but is Oscar DLH the most overrated fighter of all time? Every fight before 147 was against a guy who was fighting above his natural weight or beyond his prime. At 147, you could argue he lsot every meaningful fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He is not overrated at all. He was a top fighter for a long time and very important to the sport of boxing. And I 100% disagree he lost his meaningful fights at 147. I thought he edged Whitaker, he defintely beat Quartey (I have no idea why people think it is even controversial one iota) and he was robbed against Trinidad badly.

Dan (DC)

Is there any truth to the rumor that showtime wants to do a card june 30th in your hometwon of DC

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

It isn't a rumor. Showtime and Golden Boy ARE doing a June 30 card in Washington.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Who do you have winning Sturm-Zbik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I'd imagine Sturm gets the edge and wins a decision.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Hey Danno - Any word from Gary Shaw on DeMarco now that Linares is out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No. Gary visited with Showtime yesterday and they talked about some things but nothing is settled.

CM (Toronto)

Bigger bust: Abraham at 168, or Darchinyan at 118? Both had one big win against faded names at the weight, but fizzled out huge in all their other big fights there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Abraham at 168. He came into the tourney as the second favorite and didn't win a round. Vic at least was competitive with Agbeko and very competitive with Mares.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Hey Dan - Is anything else being lined up for Dzinziruk since he's apparently not getting the Trout fight and HBO still owes him a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

First the Trout fight is not 100 percent off at this point. Second Dzinziruk will still be on HBO in August as the network owes him that fight. So they will have to find another opponent if Trout doesnt do the fight.

WBA (United States)

We are pleased to announce that there is no need for a Presidential election. Mitt Romney is the new President. President Obama will be elevated to Super-President. Joe Biden is interim president.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Dan, any word on if HBO is showing any other fights besides Chavez Jr/Lee?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

There wont be any other live fights on that card. But look what is seven days previous and figure it out.

Dan (Liverpool, NY)

Since the HOF was brought up, What about Iran Barkley, Virgil Hill, Donald Curry and Leo Gamez

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

No, maybe, no, no.

Rags (NYC)

Could the Love Child get in the mix vs. Alexander if he gets by Rosado on June 1st?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Interesting but I doubt it. Alexander is at 147. Julio had said he wanted to come back to 147 but he isn't obviously since he took Rosado at 154. So I very much doubt we will see that fight.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Danito! Is Gamboa worthy of being inducted into the Winky Wright school of business?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

He is the captain of this year's team.

Alex (NY)

I'm pretty sure the Ali-Frazier trilogy was as close and debatable, especially considering the ending to the third fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Second fight wasn't.

Dan (Ron Bethel, Ct)

For what its worth Rios and Abril have done a great job getting their fight out their and with Marquez, and alvarado on the card I'm looking forward to watching it tomorrow night. Do you think it will do over or under 100,000 buys on PPV??

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Well under.

Brinsley (St Albans, UK )

What interests you more? Marquez-Pacquiao VI or Marquez-Rios?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I'd be interested in either.

Kevin (Boston)

I got a ticket for Mayweather-Cotto at a theater in Times Square for 18 bucks. That's like the regular price of a movie in Manhattan!

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Excellent!

Steve (NYC)

Why si Toney still getting licensed? Rumor is he wants to fight in Texas against David Rodriguez next.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I have no idea. He sounds brain damaged, for real, when he speaks. It is pathetic that commissions allow him to fight. Pathetic.

Richard (Indianapolis)

Do you go watch Golden Gloves fights or any other amateur boxing fights, or do you just stick to watching pros?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I've watched plenty of amateur boxing although I havent been in person in years.

Gilberto Mendoza (WBA)

Dan, i am quite hungry and cannot wait until your summer bbq. Could you perhaps host an interim bbq before then?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

LOL.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

So I have tickets to attend the Golden Boy's "little brother" card on May 4th at the Hard Rock. Two questions: Have you heard chatter as to who will be fighting? Will be attending that card as well since you'll already be in Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

May 4 is supposed to be headlined by Daniel Ponce De Leon. I probably will be there but it will depend on how much I have to do with TV and such ahead of the Mayweather fight.

Dave (San Jose)

Not talking smack but do you remember when you said you saw Pavlik fighting at heavyweight one day? What do you think about that prediction now?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Probably unlikely but I still would not be shocked if at some point he fought a heavyweight at the end of his career.

Chris (Chatsworth)

Are you losing your mind with the comparisons between SRR and Floyd? SRR was 110-1 in his first 111 fights. The one loss was to a middleweight legend (Lamotta) whom he beat 5 times after that. Floyd started at 130 and has dodged all the great welters. SRR started at 135 and won the middleweight title 5 times and competed at light heavy. No comparison!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I've never compared Floyd to SRR. SRR is unmatched in his resume compared to Mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Got a little choked up watching Jorge Posada throw out the first pitch at the Yankees home opener just now.

@DaRealDULLAH (AL)

Call me crazy but I think Mosley vs Canelo fight is a VERY interesting match-up at 154. What chances do you give Mosley?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Very, very, very little.

TJ (Phoenix, AZ)

Dan, as a consumer, convince me why I should order Mayweather vs Cotto. Floyd can't hide the facts from real boxing fans. If he wanted to take full credit for beating Miguel Cotto, he should have made the fight back in 2008 when Cotto was coming off career best victories against Judah and Mosley and when Floyd was coming off huge wins against De La Hoya and Hatton. Now, this fight is a mere joke. A side show. Mayweather should be paying me to watch this garbage. I bet you anything you don't post this because you are scared to upset Goldenboy, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

LOL. I couldn't care less if you order it or dont and I have no desire to convince you either way. I dont care.

Bryan (Erie)

Danno, what is next for K-9 Bundrage, been waiting forever to see him fight again???

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Stuck with a mandatory vs Cory Spinks.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Very classy thing for the Yanks to line up behind Posada for the first pitch. Now lets go YANKS!

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

YES!

slam (miami)

If you dont want to see floyd vs cotto you are not a real boxing fan

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I've heard that comment from a lot of folks too.

bill (carmel, ny)

dan, does haymon + devon alexander = alexander vs some stiff coming to hbo soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Showtime.

Robert (San Diego, CA)

What's next for Zab Judah?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

He's the mandtory for the Peterson-Khan 2 winner so I would imagine he will see what happens in that May 19 fight and go from there.

Wade (ATL)

What's next for Vernon Paris? lol

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Finding a game plan I would imagine.

Al M (NYC)

Do you think Hopkins has been so quite because ticket sales have been going so well?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

From what I understand tickets are moving well.

Jim (Santa Monica)

Devon Alexander vs. Nate Campbell coming in July on Showtime. Can't you feel excited for that one already?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I just a little sick.

Lupe Martinez (Houston Texas)

How much money is Juan Manuel Marquez making?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Not sure.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Sorry but TJ from Phoenix is way off... To call Mayweather/Cotto garbage is idiotic. Especially when its at 154.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Agreed. But dopey Fight Freaks will be dopey Fight Freaks.

Cody (Minneapolis)

The May 5th card is the worst major boxing pay per view in years.....I wouldn't pay $15 to watch this crap at a theater, $10 to watch at a bar or $65 to watch at home.....It is JUNK

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Great, then you will be saving some money on May 5. Use it to buy a clue.

Mike (Chicago)

Still haven't finished my taxes, because I've gone through all my receipts and still haven't found how many Ricky Hattons there are!!! Can you help me please?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Just one. I repeat, just one.

Dustin (Ohio)

Cody needs help.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

He does.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Dan, are we getting one of your massive notebooks today?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

The edict from the office is less notebook and take many of the items in the notebook and break them out as blog posts to sprinkle through the week, so that is what will be happening, which is why you have seen many more blog posts this week than usual and there are more to come with items what would have been part of the notebook.

ralph (CT)

I think that people overlook Miguel Cotto's resume. He's beaten like 15 world champions, pretty amazing when you go down his record fight by fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Cotto has one of the best resumes of any fighter in boxing today. Period.

Robert (San Diego, CA)

Is Sugar Shane going to have Nazir Richardson in his corner vs. Canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Yes.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

What's next for TBA?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

TBA.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Cody from Minneapolis should b punished by bein forced 2 watch Sergio Mora fights for 24 hrs straight.

Ryan (Sacramento/Concord, CA)

I don't know if you are allowed to disclose your current (active) top ten fighters or if you even wish to, but I'm really curious, who makes your top ten?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I publish a monthly top 20 p4p on ESPN.com.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

Ok, for all these people saying Mayweather/Cotto is total crap, name some alternatives besides Pac or Martinez...? Are these really his only 2 options??

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Mayweather-Cotto is a legitimate PPV fight and I look forward to it. Can't please everyone I guess. Some people will NEVER be happy unless the PPV was Pacquiao vs Mayweather with Ali-Frazier 4 and Leonard-Hagler 2 on the undercard.

TBA (Las Vegas)

I am one of the most active fighters in the world. I will fight anyone!

Brian (Providence)

So whats next for Gamboa? Does he have to clear up the Top Rank lawsuit before he can fight again?

ROB (WASHINGTON DC)

I find boxing fans to be funny. We swear up and down being undefeated means nothing and then call Mayweather vs Cotto garbage ebcause Cotto is no longer the undefeated Cotto. LOL make up your minds!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Thank you.

Tim (Lincoln)

Dan, that ESPN article a few days ago about introducing advanced stats to boxing is garbage (and I'm a statistician). After RJJ-Tarver 2, Roy's punch stats wouldn't have changed by that analysis! In a sport where one punch can change a career, the stats just don't have much meaning.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I generally agree. Stats in boxing are not worth much other than W-L-D and KOs.

bill (carmel, ny)

i am considering checking out mayweather/cotto in a movie theater. can any of the freaks tell whether you can consume adult beverages?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I've heard from some Freaks who have seen fights in the movies that some theaters sell beer.

Rob (Bellmore)

Dan, its not a matter of whethr May-COTTO is a "legitimate" PPV fight; it's the fact that there are better fights to make the Mayweather wants no part of (Pac or Martinez); to say Cody has no clue b/c he says its crap - thats his opinion - and Mayweather is 7-1 favorites, so he's not that far off

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Other than Pacquiao-Mayweather I do not think there is a more attractive fight for Mayweather.

Roy (Reno)

Didn't Abraham KO Taylor in the first fight of the Super Six?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Yes why?

Justin (Boston)

Who would win a fight between Leonard and Hagler RIGHT NOW??

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Last time I saw either guy they still looked in great shape!

Kevin (Boston)

I brought a 30-pack of beers into see the Rocky Balboa movie. You just have to be discreet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

LOL, how does one discreetly move 30 beers?

Charles (DFW)

Movie Taverns sell beer, as well as Studio movie Grill. Also, AMC in the Metroplex is shoewing the fight for $15

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

If there is no Mayweather vs. Pacquaio, Mayweather must fight a Klitschko or it's a crap PPV.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Naturally.

Gale Van Hoy (TEXAS)

I'm doing my best to make sure the W-L-D statistic doesn't mean anything either!

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Max (Gainesville)

Has Wlad Klitschko indicated whom he plans to fight after his Thompson mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Likely Cris Arreola.

Roy (Reno)

You said:Abraham at 168. He came into the tourney as the second favorite and didn't win a round. But he did KO Taylor

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Fair enough. And then lost every round in his next three fights.

Steven (Chicago )

I sneak beer into every movie I go to. Why would the fight be any different.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

But 30??????

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Here's my story on the $50K win bonus for Rios-Abril from this morning: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7809106/brandon-rios-vs-richard-abril-title-fight-feature-50k-winner-bonus

Darian (Chandler)

Do you know if HBO is planning on doing the little afternoon live pre-fight show hosted outside the Grand Garden Arena for the Mayweather-Cotto PPV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I dont know they exact schedule but you can count on there being that sort of programming -- be it the live weigh-in or Fight Day Now. You will see a lot for it as well as for Pacquiao-Bradley.

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Dan, before you said that if Mayweather fought a Klitschko he would eventually get caught and KOed. But what if he fought a good but not yet great HW, like Cris Arreola? Do you think he would win by decision?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

He would also get knocked out.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Did you read this week's random thoughts? http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/950/more-fighters-should-follow-jmms-lead

Brian (Providence)

SWISHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Three-run double for Swisher!!

Steven (Chicago )

I like beer but I think if I had 30 I would start viewing the fight like Van Hoye.

Fletch ((Savannah, GA))

Dantasm, don't forget about the Vaszquez v Marquez Trilogy by the way. That one was fantastic.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Of course it was. I was asked specifically about Moales-Barrera and Gatti-Ward.

Mike (Venice Beach(CA))

Hey Dan, any word on when tickets go on sale for Berto vs. Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

From the Golden Boy press release: Tickets, priced at $250, $150, $100 and $50, go on sale on Monday, April 16 at 10:00 am PT and are available for purchase online at www.staplescenter.com, www.ticketmaster.com or via Ticketmaster charge-by-phone lines at (800)745-3000. Tickets will also be available at STAPLES Center box office beginning Tuesday, April 17.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Dano- Hypothetical question: if Sergio Martinez before he retires, KO's Chavez, Mayweather, and Pacqiauo...does he make it to the Hall?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Duh. Do you really need to ask that?

Choco (New Jersey)

Hello Dan, what would you think of Jan Zaveck as an opponent for Devon Alexander this summer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I could see that happening.

Sam (ATL)

Can you get points deducted for rubbing someone's head and messing up their hair? That would be my strategy to get Broner off his game.

Abel (OKC)

Hey Dan, I saw a few of the freaks in the chat today that mentioned they would be watching mayweather/cotto in theaters. Is it possible for the promoters to show the fight in theaters in 3D

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Dont think that is in the cards yet.

Richard (Haywards Heath UK)

Once Mayweather and Pacquiao have retired, is there anyone you see out there capable of being a massive PPV, crossover attraction?? Canelo, Rios..??

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

They are candidates. Remember, everyone thought when Oscar retired there would be no big PPV stars and then we got Mayweather and Pacquiao doing huge numbers in all of their fights. Somebody will come along.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

By the way -- there will be an RAD chat on Saturday night following the PPV card!

Brent (Toronto)

Do the networks think of the Super Six as a success or failure? Do you think either Showtime or HBO will try another tournament anytime soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I can definitely see another tournament but I do not see a 6-man 2-year tourney any time in the forseeable future. Very expensive, very comlicated and you need a division where the top guys are all involved or at least most of them. (Bute was just one of several guys highly regarded when the 168 tourney began). I dont see another massive six-man event happening for a long time.

Robert (San Diego, CA)

Don't know if you ever been to San Diego, CA but out here we have a highway named after the great Archie Moore.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

My in laws live in San Diego and I have been. I liked it very much there.

Kevin (Boston)

To be fair, the beers were split with friends. And we had lots of pockets and high socks. Also the place was going absolutely nuts when Rocky fought Mason "the Line" Dixon so I can't wait to see what the atmosphere is like for a real fight.

Jon (Ottawa)

Would it be possible to create a Super 6 tournament with only Ricky Hattons?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

These are my inventive readers.

Craig D. (Philly)

will Rios make weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I sure hope so.

Steven (Chicago )

Flasks work great for movie theaters too.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

They pretty much work anywhere.

Keith H (Seattle)

Freaks, count your blessings. Dan has already doubled what any other chat leader has done by time and you get the latest and most credible news. Just letting you I know I appreciate it, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Thank you.

Peter (NYC)

I have a flask right now at work

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Why does that not surprise me?

Chance (North Carolina )

Dan, I am surprised there is not much of a demand for Sergio Martinez v. Andre Ward - that is a pure toss-up fight of 2 P4P guys

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Because neither guy has a significant fan base yet. And also because I think Ward would be perceived as a massive favorite.

James (Parts Unknown)

Even though Pacquaio has dominated his last few fights, do you feel he is still in his prime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

No, I do not.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Here's the lowdown on Fedchenko: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/941/scouting-marquezs-foe-fedchenko

Jim (Santa Monica)

You had previously said they were trying to schedule Mikey Garcia vs. Celestino Caballero, do you have any updates on this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Not yet but they are working on it.

Jim (Lexington, KY)

Will there be replays of 24/7 Cotto - Mayweather on CNN?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Yes.

Edwardl (lubbock, tx)

Dan, any chance Devon Alexander gets the winner of Berto-Ortiz? I think any of those fights would be awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Would love to see it but no chance to be the August fight.

Paul (Detroit, MI)

I know there has been talk about Arce and Rigondeaux appearing on the Pacquiao undercard in separate fights. Is there any possibility they could fight each other?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

From what I am told, zero.

Steven (Chicago )

By the way I went with 3 strippers for the bachelor party per your recommendation. It was the obvious choice.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Congrats.

Evan (Detroit)

Should Khan beat Peterson, is there any way Zab goes back down that road? I think a guy like Alvarado is more his speed. He'd probably look good enough in that fight to get another big payday.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I do not think we will ever see a Khan-Judah 2 put it that way. If Khan wins I think he goes to 147 and Judah fights whomever for the vacant belt.

Lance (Seattle, WA)

What is next for Nonito Donaire?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Probably July 14 on the Top Rank PPV against Cristian Mijares.

Jackson (IA)

Good job, Dan! By saying that Pac-Man is past his prime, you've all but guaranteed that Floyd will sign that contract!

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

LOL.

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

Thanks for chatting Fight Freaks! Plenty of stuff for you to read in the blog and news stories. The schedule is updated too. So enjoy this weekend's fights and dont forget about the Saturday night RAD chat after the PPV. Talk to you then and have a great weekend. Peace.
