Hello, everybody. Thanks, as always, for stopping by. Tons of questions in the mailbox, so let's get cranking.
Do you think that the New York Jets should Trade or Release QB Mark Brunell since they have Tim Tebow on their Roster?
Brunell is an unrestricted free agent. He won't be re-signed.
If Ingram, Upshaw, and Floyd were all available, who do you thinnk the pick would be?
It would be Ingram. Pretty sure of that.
Hey Rich, who would you say are the vocal and emotion leaders in the Jets locker room? I really respected and appreciated Brendan Moore standing up to Santonio Holmes last year...
Moore isn't a loud guy, more of the EF Hutton type. You will see Sanchez and Mangold in bigger leadership roles, possibly Keller, too. On defense, Pouha. I think Revis and Harris should be more leader types.
Rich, A lot of names being thrown out there. And sure the Landry signing was nice but he can't cover down field and even if they p/u Bell same can be said. Leonhard we all know is a wait and see situation. So what are they going to do at free safety this year? It sure looks like they are hoping to find a player in the draft like they did with E. Coleman and Rhodes. Your thoughts?
You're right, Ira, they need a free safety. If Barron is there at 16, it would be hard to pass even though he's not a true FS. Harrison Smith of Notre Dame is the next-best safety, but he could be gone by 47.
Hey Rich, With the renewed emphasis on the ground and pound philosphy,as well as the Tebow facet, the Jets really need to beef up their O-line depth. It seems to be a no-brainer, when they run well they win. They didn't do it in free agency (actually lost Turner). How big a priority in the draft?
I don't think they'll take a OT in the first round. Don't think there's good value at 16. Massie of Ole Miss is a true RT, could be an option at 47 -- if he lasts. The wild card in Round 1 is DeCastro, the Stanford G. Some teams rate him as a top-10 talent. It would be hard to pick a guard at 16, but if they go by their board ...
With the Jets failure to sign free agents to fill the numerous holes on the team and if the Jets fail on draft day, is the Jets offseason consider a failure and do you see Mike Tannenbaum being fired or on the hot seat???
All depends on how the season goes. Your record is the bottom line in this business.
How much playing time will Greg McElroy see this year? And who's odd on favorite for the punting job for the Jets - Travis Baltz or T.J. Conley?
If McElroy is playing, the Jets are in trouble. No knock on him, but ... well, you know what I mean. The punting job? Really? You are hardcore, Rich.
Would you like Michael Floyd at 16, or do you think there is enough WR depth in the 2nd round?
Great question, Jim. I've heard good things about Floyd, but I need to do more research. He has all the tools and he was productive at ND, but he had only 1 play over 35 yds last season -- and that was a busted coverage vs. Navy. The Jets need a playmaker.
Hello Rich, Is it just me or are the Jets showing a scarily low level of interest in improving their offensive line that gave up 40 sacks last season? I'm a really optimistic person, and their supposed lack of concern for the O-line is my one really big concern right now...that and the fact that Eric Smith may start again.
You have reason to be concerned about the OL. They simply can't go into next season with the same 5 and I find it hard to believe that Ducasse will be a starter. Wouldn't be surprised if they took an OT in the second round, maybe DeCastro in the first.
Rich, you've been saying that the Jets are most likely to take a pass rusher in round 1. With that said, if Ingram and Upshaw are gone by the time they pick do you think they'll take the next best DE/LB (Branch, Perry, etc.) or will they take the best player available?
Therein lies the question of the draft, Jon. Perry would be a reach at 16. Branch might be a reach, too. Keep an eye on Chandler Jones, his stock is rising. They should stay away from Coples, if he slips. Questions about his motor. If PRers are gone, it's BAA.
Neil Glat is the new team president. Why should Jets fans care? What does this mean for the Jets?
He really won't have a direct impact on the football operation. He'll run the biz ops.
I wanted to know your thoughts on how maybe the money for tebow could have been used to say sign Locklear an OL who could play various spots on the line and how it shows Jerry Reese out classed Mike Tannenbaum yet again
Since when is Locklear the answer? He's past his prime and I'm not so sure he'd be a huge upgrade over Hunter.
Hear anything about the Jets being interested in Shea McClellin? He might be the second best 3-4 OLB in the draft and it's looking doubtful that he makes it out of round 1.
His stock is rising. You're right, he could go at the bottom of the round. Sounds like a Patriots kind of guy. Excellent motor, good athleticism. Lacks some size, but he has some tools.
What will it take to move up for Ingram? Would we still be able to keep a 2nd or 3rd rounder this year to get a starting caliber WR like Randle, McNutt, or Hill?
If they trade up from 16 to, say, 7 to take Ingram, they'd almost certainly have to give up their 2nd round pick.
What are the Jets going to do about getting faster at the LB position? What are they going to do with Pace? Scott? Maybin?
Pace and Maybin are definitely back; they're the Jets' 2 best pass rushers. Scott probably will be back from all indications.
Hey Rich, thanks for doing this chat. When looking at the offense last year, a common theme is to talk about the regression of Mark Sanchez. What people don't mention as often is that the running back production, wide receiver talent, and offensive line protection all regressed around him as well. Now headed into this year all the draft talk is about the defense, yet based on what the roster looks like, the offense around sanchez looks like its regressed again. While LT and Plax both weren't what they were, they still offered something in the short passing game and red zone respectively. How does this team expect Sanchez to improve without giving him a dependable running back, a deep threat on the outside, and a right tackle who he can trust?
All excellent points, Mike. They've done nothing for sanchez except put some money in his bank account, then sucker-punch him with the Tebow trade. It's the same cast as last year, sans Burress and LT. I guess Rex is hoping that Sparano could be the cure-all.
What is the deal with DeAngelo Smith...will he be able to play free safety or is he more of a special teams player?
I wouldn't pin my hopes on him. He's just a minimum-salary guy, no lock to make the team.
Hey Rich, do you see the Jets moving up in the draft for ANY player (Richardson, FLoyd, Upshaw, Ingram)?
Could see them moving up for only 2 players -- Richardson and Ingram.
Rich, Thanks for the great coverage. I can't help but think the Jets got extremely lucky the 1st time on Hard Knocks given that there was nothing said that was aired that could start a major controversary. Imagine if Rex says something about another coach, player or organization forgetting that he is being taped. As much as I would love to see the Jets on Hards Knocks again, I can't help but think the Jets would be as lucky this time around and could have a major headache and distraction on their hands that they don't need.
You're right, Craig, there was no controversy last times -- unless you count Rex's cursing, which pissed off Dungry and created a few headlines. I wouldn't worry about Hard Knocks. As I reported the other day, it was offered to the Falcons. No word on whether they'll accept.
played any golf recently rich?
Unfortunately, no. You offering me a tee time?
What is the status of the Dustin Keller contract negotiations?
Very early stages, as I reported recently. Don't see things picking up until after the draft and into the summer.
Rich - Why has the Jets run game been lackluster the last couple seasons? John Conner not cutting it? Our O-line not getting enough push? Or is shonn greene not a breakout runner?
It was good in 2010, then slipped last season. It's all of the above.
Hey Rich, Whats the deal on this Safety the Jets just brought in, DeAngelo Smith? I heard they had a lot of interest in him this off-season so is he being brought in to compete with Smith (if hes a FS not a SS) or is he just a depth player in case they don't get their guy, who ever that is, in the Draft?
Folks, Smith is just a name. He hasn't played in a game since 2009. It doesn't solve anything at safety.
Hey Rich, I've seen a bunch of first-round mock drafts, but haven't seen many predictions for the second round. Assuming they don't take Floyd in Round 1, are wide receivers like Jeffrey (South Carolina) and Sanu (Rutgers) expected to be there for the Jets in Round 2?
Jeffrey would be good value at 47. Sanu is a possession receiver, they need a guy with vertical speed. They could go a number of different ways in the second round -- OT, OLB, WR, RB, S. Almost everything is on the table.
Hey Rich, What are the chances the Jets trade up to a top 10 pick to get Ingram, what would it cost them, and would you think about the move?
It would cost them their second-rounder and then some, depending on how high they go. I don't think I'd agree with it for Ingram. If they go up for Richardson, different story.
What is Sanchez realistically worth in a trade scenario?
It's not worth discussing. He's not getting traded. They're just rumors.
Rich, After drafting 3 rb's in the past 3 drafts and not counting Connor can you see them drafting another or they go the Ronnie Brown type of signing after the draft?
Not sure how much Brown has left. He knows Sparano's scheme, obviously, so that's the selling point. Yes, I can see them drafting a back. This team needs another legit RB.
Both Upshaw and Barron are available at 16. Who do you think the Jets take? Who would you take?
Tough call, but from everybody I've talked to, Barron is the better player.
Rich,The Bucs let Tanard Jackson go earlier in the week, might he be someone the Jets would consider to play alongside Landry?
I believe he signed with the Skins today.
Any chance the Jets trade up to get Blackmon? Tebow or Sanchez would have decent trade value....
Like I said, Sanchez isn't going anywhere. They just gave him an $8M signing bonus. Nobody wants Tebow. He led the Broncos to the playoffs last season and all they could get for him was a 4th rounder. What does that tell you?
Can you name 1 high draft pick from the last 3 years that's going to be a starter or meaningful player? Wilson, Vlad, Mo, Ellis?
Mo started every game last season. Wilson played about 50 pct of the snaps as the nickel. What about Sanchez and Greene? They're starters.
Any chance of the Jets trading down? Seems like it would be a good way to fill an extra need
Not in Tannenbaum's DNA to trade down.
If there is one of the Jets biggest needs (OLB, RT, WR, S) that they don't address in this draft, which is it? Last year I felt like they needed a safety and a pass rusher as well and they didn't go for either, so it's logical to assume they might not fill them all this year.
They could ignore RT and sign someone (maybe Vernon Carey) to come in and compete.
Rumors have it that Rex doesn't want any part of Hard Knocks and Woody Johnson does. It gets me thinking that Rex probably didn't even want Tebow but it was a 100% Woody Johnson move ?
Yes, I think there is some truth to that. I know there is. Think about it: The Jets sign Stanton, give him 500K and, a few days later, they're tripping over themselves to land Tebow? Smells fishy to me.
Hi Rich, lets say the Jets get lucky and get Ingram or Upshaw in the first round and maybe a couple of other guys in the draft that will start. Not a lot of good FA's left. What's the hope to inprove on 8-8 ?
Fair question, Oz. They base hope on a fresh approach on offense; an improved, mature Sanchez; a bounce-back year from Holmes; locker-room harmony. And away they go.
what do you see in the cards for nick bellore this year?
Obviously, a big role on special teams. I also think he can push Scott for PT.
Has another team picked up Braylon Edwards? Why not bring him back?
It's a possibility after the draft. Depends on his health and asking price. I've heard he's had some lingering knee issues.
Assuming the Jets don't wind up drafting Floyd, I suspect they'll be looking for a WR in the 2nd/3rd round range. Any names you may be hearing as candidates? And all else equal, will they be loking for size/height or pure speed?
Stephen Hill, AJ Jenkins and Jeffrey could be second-round possibilities. They need height and speed. Then again, doesn't everyone?
Who are the real personell people/person that really grade players? It seems to me that Tanny is a cap/money guy, not a true talent evalueator and Rex may see someone he likes but isn't really a talent evalueator. I worry they don't have good people advising them who to pick.
Good question, Vince. Joey Clinkscales runs the draft. He gets input from Bradway, the scouts and, of course, Rex. Tanny has final say. He takes in all the information and pulls the trigger.
What player is a dark horse for the Jets to draft?
OT Mike Adams or LB Don'ta Hightower.
If Barron, Ingram and Floyd are off the board when the Jets are on the clock, what do you think the Jets will do? Take best player available? Trade pick?
What defensive package can the Jets present to best cover the Patriot TE's? Do they need more speed from their linebackers?
More speed from LBs and more speed from safeties. A fewer communication breakdowns would help.
Who from last year's team can fans expect to really break out ths year? Maybin 10 sacks??
Maybin had 6 sacks last season after missing the first month and not knowing the defense, so, yeah, I think he can reach 10.
Lot's of talk about getting a tall WR that can stretch the field with the 16th pick but I am not sure if that is our most immediate need. In your opinion does Patrick Turner have the ability to emerge as a legit #2 oposite Holmes
Turner isn't a No. 2. He doesn't have the speed. He can be a No. 4.
Hey Rich,How much addition with the subtraction of Schooty generate? I am thinking Sanchez thrives and the Jets get an identity under Sparano.
Rex hired Sparano because of his belief in the running game. Didn't hire him because he's some up-and-coming offensive whiz.
Sorry, guys, I'm out of time. Good questions. Next week, I'll have more info on the draft. Things tend to crystallize as you get to the final week. Have a great weekend. Rich
