Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

let's roll

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Texas Rangers will have way over 100 wins this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

Nope. We're talking about a team that has never won more than 100 games and with quality teams such as Boston, New York, Detroit, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles in the AL, it would be hard to win 100 games. I think 93-97 is a good range

terry [via mobile]

Do u think with work DEZBRANT can be realy good.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

you should see the best of Dez Bryant this year. It's his 3rd season, and he'll have a full off-season to learn the offense and work with the strength coach. No excuses this year. It's time to make it happen.

raul (rio grande city Texas)

JJT, there are articles out there that suggest that there's no conscensus agreement as to who the Cowboys might select... But I think Barron will be the guy....call it a gut feeling....but Jerry could still be having nightmares about Victor Cruz running past the Cowboy secondary...Whattayya Think?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

There's a good chance they'll draft Barron, but he's not a cover safety. he's more of a thumper, a guy who hits hard who can cover some. really good prospect, but if you're looking for Ed Reed, this ain't the guy

Mac (West Coast)

JJT, regardless of availability or what you think the cowboys are going to do. Ultimately, who would you like to see the cowboys draft? Personally, I think they should draft Barron, Upshaw, or Gilmore in that order.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

I honestly don't care who they draft as long as the dude can play. I DO NOT want to see them trade down. Just make a decision and pick the guy you want - not the guy who's left.

Ryan Russell (Lubbock, TX)

What moves do the Stars need to make to get into playoff contention this year? and will Coach Tuberville go to that open coaching position at Arkansas?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

pretty broad range of questions...lol...The Stars need an elite defenseman, preferably someone who can move the puck and attack, and they need an elite forward. Neither one is easy to get. Tuberville has done nothing at Tech to say he should get the job at Arkansas

Frank (Miami fl)

i think at this point all signs are pointing to the cowboys taking a alabama player next week. So who do you think it would be in your opinion?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

If I had to rank them, I'd go: Barron, Upshaw, Kirkpatrick, Hightower

benny (jersey city)

is the 3rd wide reciever on the roster?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

nope. They found Robinson and they'll find another one

Chris (TX)

Whats going on with the mavs and can they turn it around come playoff time?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

they're an old team - 8 players older than 30 - who have just been hammered by the schedule this season. There's not a single shred of tangible evidence to suggest the Mavs can win in the playoffs. They can't win on the road. They can't win close games. And they don't have another scorer aside from Dirk that they can rely on every night. Oh, and Dirk is having an up-and-down season. He's still great, but his game doesn't show up every night because of the schedule

Beevomav (Dallas)

Where do you think the Cowboys will finish in the East and why?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

no idea. We don't even know who's on the team yet. Check back at the end of training camp

Steven (houston tx)

Will the mavs bring back jason kidd or make a hard run at deron williams next year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

Both. Jkidd would be fine as a backup playing 18-22 minutes a game. The Mavs will push hard for Williams. I don't know that they'll get him since NJ can offer nearly $30 million more than Mavs

BAintheA (Raleigh, NC)

What would Dallas receive in return if they dropped from 14 to 18 or 20? 2nd? 3rd? 4th?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

I don't care. It's dumb to trade down for a team that needs upper-echelon players. You trade down, you get further away from the upper-tier of talent

Bryan (GA)

Why is T.O still holding on to this grudge with romo? and did romo have any part and him leaving?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

If you were a 38 YO dude who should be in the HOF one day and you were playing for the Allen Wranglers, wouldn't you be mad? The Cowboys probably told Romo they were thinking about cutting him and asked his opinion of such a move. Romo probably said do what you need to do

Manny (Okl)

Who better dez or miles?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

right now, miles by far

Victor (dallas)

The cowboys didnt get rob ryan much to work with in last years draft, bruce carter was hurt and josh thomas didnt make the team. so will they go heavy on defense this year since there only need offensive is a receiver?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

they should go for the best players - offense or defense. It doesn't matter. They need a lot of help

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

Do you think the Cowboys are going to cave in to Anthony Spencer's demand for a new deal? If so, why? He's a model of inconsistency.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:25 PM)

this isn't a negotiation. The Cowboys have offered him a one-year deal for $8.8 million. He can either sign it or shop himself for a better deal. Or he can negotiate a better deal with DAllas. Spencer thinks he can get a long term deal for more than $10 million per year, which is why he fired his agent and hired a locally-based agent

Eric (Austin)

Do you think the Angels lauded acquisitions will give the Rangers any real competition this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

absolutely. but the Rangers' lineup is still a little better and their BP is much better

BAintheA (Raleigh, NC)

As of today, does Ogletree make the final roster this season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

I wouldn't think so. He's just a guy. They can do better - even if its a young guy with more potential

Ryan (Black Rock, AR)

JJT, I have a errie feeling that the Mavs are going to either miss the playoffs or get hot as a 7-8 seed and make some noise. Seems like the last few games they have been snake bit. What say you?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

I don't see it. They haven't found any consistency. I tend to deal in reality - not what I want it to be.

Todd (Pa)

JJT whats your take on Spencer or better yet what's ur gut feeling now that he changed agents you think Boys' try n sign long term(which I hope not) or even look harder now at his replacement in the 1st or 2nd round, which you already said would be cheaper. Plus think Spencer is a one trick pony from my eyes doesnt do enough especially when has 1 on 1 match ups with pass rush. Draft OLB early would be my thoughts Upshaw Perry Branch or McCellin come to mind all have better motors IMO. Thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

If they wanted to sign him long-term they would've already done it

Ryan (Black Rock, AR)

When is Romo going to give up on this US Open dream and concentrate on football? I know it may not effect him, but the apperance it gives is one of the reasons people dog him all the time.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

do you change your life because of what other people say about you? I don't. Playing golf for a few days isn't going to affect the Cowboys' season

Chuck (East Coast)

I see this as hamilton's last year with the Rangers. Simply because of the off field issues and the cavalier attitude he has had towards the team. Then throw in Martin being ready next season and I think the writing is on the wall for Hamilton. So what is your gut feeling on the Ragners resigning Hamilton?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

My gut says they'll sign him. It's best for him and the team that he stay in Texas. His off-the-field issues make it a difficult contract, though

Chuck (East Coast)

Do you see the Rangers making any big moves at the trade deadline this year? maybe trading Hamilton?? Also what do you think the long term plan at first base is, Olt?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

You don't trade Hamilton in a year that you're trying to win a title? My suspicion is the Rangers will trade Moreland at deadline or off-season and Olt will be the first baseman next season

BAintheA (Raleigh, NC)

It's Sept. 5th, Who are the starting OLB's? Ware and ??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

i'm not looking that far ahead. They haven't even had the draft yet. We don't even know who's on the team

Tristan (Temecula, CA)

Now that Lamar Odom is gone, what do you talk about in Dallas?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

worthless

Ron G. (Santa Monica)

Will Tiger get to Jack's record for majors?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

nope, though he may put together a couple of nice 4-day performances and win another 2-3 Majors before his career is over

Zolty (NY)

Are folks in Texas excited about Larry Brown coming to SMU?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:35 PM)

I'm not. Then again, SMU may be the most irrelevant D1 program in America

BAintheA (Raleigh, NC)

That doesn't answer my question. Not saying they should do it, just curious what they could get.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

i don't care, so I haven't thought about it. Since I haven't thought about it, I can't give you an answer. But YOU should google draft chart, which puts a value on every pick, and then you can figure out what it's worth. It will only take you a few minutes to find it

Beevomav (Dallas)

Why all the media hate for Dez when he had 933 yards and 9 td's last season in (15) games?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

I never speak for the media. I speak for myself. I don't hate Dez

Ronin (El Segundo)

What's your overall impression of the free agents the Cowboys added?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

Carr is really good, the rest are solid.

Ronnie War (LA)

Do you think Mark Cuban has a plan for next year b/c this year looks like a wash?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:37 PM)

it starts with Deron Williams

Chris (Holmdel)

Why in the world would Dallas consider drafting Barron, a safety potentially with coverage issues, considering coverage is becoming the most important part of a safeties job these days?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

i didn't ay he COULDN'T cover. He just hasn't done much of it. But the Cowboys have loved him since the middle of last season. They've done a lot of work on him

Zolty (NY)

I am smelling overconfidence among Ranger fans. A fast start is good but the Dodgers are burning up the league at 145 win pace...calm down Ranger Fans!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

I don't sense any overconfidence. That said, call me when the Dodgers have been to consecutive World Series

Jeff (Middletown, Oh)

Can the Cowboys draft three starters?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

guess we'll find out.

Chris (Holmdel)

Do you think the Cowboys are in better shape now with Garrett at the helm compared to if they had hired a veteran coach like Mike Shanahan?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:39 PM)

Shanahan hasn't accomplished anything of note in a decade. I;'d take Garrett

Todd (Pa)

So do u see drafting OLB in 1st or 2nd round then with no intention of signing Spencer long term?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

it could happen. They cold take Upshaw and rescind offer to Spencer, making him a FA

Jeff Burroughs (San Antonio)

JJT, This Ranger team is off to a much better start defensively. It is hugely important for Darvish to feel like his team can catch the ball and get aggressive in the strike zone, what are you thoughts?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:40 PM)

I'd say that's important for any pitcher. The defense, however, has been outstanding overall

Evan (San Antonio)

Why are you such a bitter man ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

not bitter at all. Actually, I'm in a good mood today because I'm going to watch a movie in my man cave and crank it like i'm at IMAX when I finish this chat. As I've mentioned, I deal in reality 0 not what fans want reality to be. I don't deal in hope, faith and optimism. I deal in what it is. The glass is not half full or half empty. It's simply a half a glass of water. Not everyone can handle that.

raul (rio grande city Texas)

JJT, would you be a proponent of trading down if the team had a SOUND drafting record? I know you hate trade downs and I agree with you....but what iff???

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

not really. I like taking the guy I want - not the guy who's left. When you trade down, you get further away from the talent. when u consistently take the best player,it's hard to go wrong

Ronin (El Segundo)

Any word on Murray's ankle?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:44 PM)

should be fine for camp

jr (mp) [via mobile]

the cowboys are going to trade down so they can get more draft picks like i said weeks ago 1 round draft picks are overrated

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

That's factually inaccurate. The majority of All-Pro players and Pro Bowl players are found in the first round. Exceptions exist, of course, but the best players are in the first round

Ronnie G (LA)

Your top 3 musical artists?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

I'm so eclectic, I like a wide variety from gospel to hip hop to country to pop to RB

Ronnie War (LA)

what's more important a solid secondary or a relentless pass rush?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

pass rush

Evan (San Antonio)

"Dealing in reality" does not justify snide and condescending answers to our questions (ie - your answer of "who cares")

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

that's your perception, which doesn't make it right - only yours

SRI (BOSTON)

what do you think of smu hiring larry brown, will it work

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

NO. No. No. A thousand times no. And then multiply that by a thousand times.

Maurice (Orlando FL)

why not draft Dre Kirkpatrick, and have him play some safety, in todays game theres almost always 4 WR's... i have confidence in B Carter defending the TE......

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

safety and corner are not the same position. The game looks entirely differently from those 2 spots. If u want a CB, then draft one, but don't think he's going to play safety

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Every team needs a Delonte West, agree?

Erik (Dallas)

Ian Fitzsimmons gets in an uproar when Dontari Poe is mentioned as a possible pick @ 14. Do you think he's a better prospect than Fletcher Cox or Courtney Upshaw?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

I don't like Poe as a player. Not enough production for a dude in a lower tier conference to be taken in the first round

Chuck (East Coast)

What do you see Darvish's record at the end of the season? Feliz record? I was very impressed with Feliz first start this season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

I don't like predicting pitcher's records because you can pitch great and lose or you can pitch poorly and win. I like innings because that usually equates to success. I'd say Darvish pitches 170 with an ERA of 3.85 and Feliz gets 160 with an ErA of 3.75.

SRI (Boston)

who can ideal opponent for mavs if they make it to playoffs

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

OKC, but that's only because it's the lesser of several evils. OKC would beat them in 6 after going up 3-1

Beevomav's Sister (The Virgin Islands)

Watkins or MacMahon in a steel cage match?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

Watkins. He's from Bed-Stuy in NY

SRI (BOSTON)

Is any SMU player on cowboys draft radar or free agent radar

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

don't know. I'm not a huge fan of the draft, so i don't pay much attention after the first round

Chuck (East Coast)

I will take those stats on both pitchers. Thank you very much for your time. I thoroughly enjoy reading your stuff on a daily basis. As a transplanted Ranger fan over here on the East Coast.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

thanks much

Jeff Burroughs (San Antonio)

I won the MVP in 1974 and only hit 25 HR's. Of course there was a jet stream blowing in at that time, what kind of season would I have had in todays game and stadium?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

50. Easy.

Jeff (Middletown, Oh)

What do you see as the Cowboys three biggest positional weaknesses on their team roster?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

Safety, OLB, DE

jr(mp) [via mobile]

do u think ryan broyles would be a good pick up for the boys in the later rounds

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

sure

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

sure, but an elite pass-rusher would go in the top 10. Every one else is a hope they can rush the passer pick

jim (tx)

Whos your favorite cowboys?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:58 PM)

define favorite: interview, player to watch, etc.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

JJT, I know you well enough that after the draft you will say "let's see how camp goes during the summer", then it will be "i haven't seen a preseason snap so I can't say", then it will be "we are only 4 games into a 16 game season." At some point you have to give readers some sort of evaulation.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

well done. I don't believe in saying whatever just to get folks off my back or give them some false hope in case they happen to respect my opinion. I don't like labeling players until I've seen them in the preseason against other opponents who don't know the plays. I don't like predicting records until I know who's on the team. That's the way I roll. Others roll differently, which is fine.

Maurice (Orlando FL)

I always wondered, whats up with Teddy Williams?? Super fast, track athlete, nice size, what do they not like about giving him a chance to return Kicks ?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:01 PM)

very little football experience. This is a huge summer for him

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:02 PM)

Lots of thoughtful debate today, which is always fun. Feel free to hit me on Twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas if you want to continue the discussion. Until Next Tuesday, peace.
