Let's do this!
There's a lil birdie flyin around town sayin that the Packers have a trick up their sleeve on draft day to trade for big time vet pass rusher........Osi? Heard anything?
Have not heard anything. If I were NYG, I might be reluctant to send Osi to GB. Freeney? Not sure who else it could be...unless you are just making this up as we speak!
Any chance Asante Samuels and/or Rocky McIntosh end up in Tampa?
I think there is a 70% chance that M Claiborne ends up in TBay. Therefore, I think that takes Samuels out of the equation for them. McIntosh? Perhaps. Maybe after the top few ILBs fall off the board they swing a deal. Maybe.
Do you think the Raiders should make a play for Asante?
The only think OAK has to deal for a guy like Samuel is future draft picks-and I don't think this organization under this new regime is cool with that. OAK could get very old in a hurray at that pace.
What position (good player of course) in the first and Second round would most impact the cowboys this year? I believe a good guard can be had in 3-4 rounds....
I agree with you on OGs, but round two could land a real good one. I like where Dallas sits and if you do go with the premise that interior OL help comes in round 3 or later, then I see those first two picks on D. Bet they love Poe. Brockers is a good fit too. Barron is prob the pick if available. Round 2 is a great spot for CB help too.
Is Cleveland in position to take the best available player?
The Browns have 13 picks-can 13 players even make this roster? I really hope they don't trade down again for picks. They need IMPACT players. To me, that is Richardson. Done deal.
MDub, help me settle a debate. Does Brockers have any hopes of developing into a pass rusher as a 5 tech in a 3-4?
Won't happen overnight, but he has loads of physical ability and extremely young as draft prospects go.
If theres a second runningback taking in the 1st round whom would it be?
I bet two go in Round 1. Cincy, Denver or NYG could all pull the trigger. I would go with L Miller as the 2nd RB off the board if I were to guess, but Miller, Martin and Wilson are all very comparable to me. Bet the Giants like Martin best. Bet Denver likes Miller best.
What is your thoughts on Kendall Reyes.
Could be a solid 3 Technique, but not a dynamic difference maker at that position. I see him as a starting 5T though. Versatile. Bet GBay and NEng are interested at the end of round 1
How does Harrison Smith compare against other safety prospects recently? Would he fit in with the Pats in a FS role?
I like Smith, but I also struggle with him a bit. Bigger guy who plays more like a SS, but does have range for FS-but not the hands to be a playmaker in deep patrol. Still, the line between SS and FS isn't as clear as it once was and Smith might be able to hold his own with the new wave of NFL receiving TEs. Early 2nd rounder.
Aqib Talib have any trade value to him? I just cant see a team trading for a guy who could go to jail, or be suspended by the league.
I can't either
Does Levonte David make sense in the 1st for the giants?
Love him and I doubt David gets out of the Top 40 picks. But NYG has bigger needs at RB and OL, which is what I would be looking for if were them.
What type of value do you see Osi having? Wouldn't Denver be a strong match?
2nd round pick for Osi seems fair. Denver? That wouldn't be bad on early downs with Osi opposite Dumervil and Miller at SLB, but I don't think any of the three would be great moving inside on throwing downs when Miller usually comes off the edge.
If Claiborne & Richardson are gone, who the Bucs should pick? Kalil and play him at RT? Kuechly?
Kalil. Seems unlikely though.
What are the Eagles looking for in a trade for Samuels, hes 31 years old and has a huge cap number for next year 10 million, cant be higher than a 3 -4 rounder right?
Seems about right....not sure where the fit is though right now for Samuel
Will the decision if Devin McCourty plays CB or S be made before the draft... or will it be dependent on who is available at either position?
Would guess it will happen after the draft-or maybe not even until late in the preseason. See where guys like Dowling are at the time.
Matt Kalil, Harrison Smith and Ryan Broyles a good three round mock for the Vikings?
No doubt. I like where MINN sits in round 2 for Smith, a CB or WR after taking Kalil, but unfortunately, they need all three! Broyles is interesting in that you might get his skill level at a bargain price, but can a team like MINN wait until he gets healthy or do they need more of an immediate impact WR?
MW- how do i turn Auto Update on??
I have no clue-have never been on your end of a chat! For me, there is just a little spot in top right of my page.
Are Mercilious' flaws correctable? How well would he fit in with what the Bears do on defense?
LOVE him for Bears since they already have Izzy for early down work. Mercilus is impressive to me. Knows how to get to QB, above average Athletic Ability...just doesn't really play the run! Best football still could be in front of him, as he was just a 1 yr starter at Illinois.
With all the good QBs in this years draft, is it possible the Cowboys draft a late round QB like Case Keenum or Kellen Moore.
I don't think either one of those guys would make the Boys roster ahead of Romo, Orton or McGhee
Do you Jerry Hughes getting a shot in Indy? Even when they do go to 3-4 full time down the line I don't see him beating out Mathis at OLB unless Mathis completely tanks ot that possition.
Well said. Hughes could be quickly forgotten. This new regime has nothing invested in him.
Do you think the Raiders will be able to find any starters with such low picks this year?
Prob not...they need depth across the board in a big way too though. That new group was just handed such a rough set of circumstances.
Love your work MW. Who's the biggest wild cards in the draft - both teams and players (besides Cleveland at #4)?
JAX at 7...could move from that pick for sure. Bills could go a lot of different ways, as could KC and SEA. BUFF, KC and SEA all look much better than they did when the season ended
Cowboys trade for Samuel and pick up Barron with the 14th pick? Immediate upgrades in the secondary, and they could grab a CB in 2nd or 3rd round, whichever round they don't draft an OG in.
Fit him under the cap? Trade within the division? Ryan prefers man CBs too. Not buying it Bryan!
When did they institute the reward for losing the Super Bowl the easiest schedule the following year?
Has nothing to do it. It is just a very simple formula. The NFL can tell you 14 of 16 of every team's games (not where they are played) for each every season going forward. 6 Games in your own division-and NEng doesn't play in a tough division. 8 Games against one AFC Division and one NFC Division-those division rotate every year. Then two games that are based on where you ended up the year before. Those two games are in your conference and against the teams that finished the season in the same spot (1st in NEng's case). Pretty cool really. So the other teams in the AFC East also have very easy schedules this season-but theirs are more difficult because they have to the play the Pats twice.
Does cleveland have any interest in blackmon or floyd?
I am sure they do, but I still think Richardson is the easy pick
I hate the Flyers. That is all.
I feel ya Brother. Not looking so good though from where I sit...
Who do Justin Blackmon and Michael Floyd reind you of in the NFL respectively?
Hmmm...I am not good at comparisons. Floyd might actually have more talent. Bigger. More fluid. More of a burst and ability to go up and get the ball. Neither is Calvin J or AJ Green though physically. Not even in Fitz's class. I think most years these guys don't go as the first WR taken, but still strong prospects and I expect both to be taken in the Top 10 next Thursday. Blackmon has some similarities to TO, esp after the catch.
Just saw that Skins put Gaffney on the trade block and has 1 foot out the door. What can the Skins get for him?
Not much. Maybe Kubiak is interested due to Gaffney's experience in that system.
Is Peter Konz worth taking at 14?
I like Konz quite a bit-and is position versatile. But that is too early for my blood.
How about the Skins' 4th rounder for Samuel? They're sure to have a bunch of extra cap room after they win the arbitration...
He sure seems like a Skin. But they better their arbitration first! Also...within the division?
Dolphins fan... Help? I'll any hope you can give me.
They will end up with Tannehill, Floyd or Ingram in round 1...all would be great fits and a huge help in some way shape or form. And hey, they have an extra third round pick! Deep WR Draft!
To me Floyd compares with Dwayne Bowe.
Not bad. Floyd might be more talented though. That isn't a knock on Bowe at all.
Do you think the Pats bring in another vet back to replace BJGE or are they comfortable with Ridley/Vereen?
The answer to that question is one I don't really know and the reason I don't know is I don't know exactly where Ridley and Vereen are right now with their pass protection. Sure wouldn't surprise me if BB added a vet though either way.
Better physical talent: Stafford or Cutler
Both are Top 5 in the NFL...Stafford, but not by much
Whats your opinion on the rumor that the Jets might move up for Melvin Ingram? Like/dislike/hate/love?
LOVE the fit. Not sure I love NYJ moving up though. Here is why-they need a LOT. Big holes on this team. Might need every high pick they can get to help fill them.
Have you taken a look at Wolfe from Cincy as a 5tech? Heard lots of good things about him.
Heck yeah. Very good football player. And yes, ideal for 3-4 DE. 2nd rounder I bet...no one talks about this guy though for some reason.
With Gaffney out the door, basically, it is safe to order a certain #10 burgundy and gold jersey?
Not sure who #10 is off the top of my head! Sorry about that, but my thoughts when I heard about Gaffney is that Hankerson must be rehabbing very well.
how are cutler and stafford in your top 5? Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning.....just dont see it.
Not in the Top 5 QBs in the NFL. In the Top 5 most talented. Rodgers in that convo too. So is Newton.
Big Seahawks fan and I havent seen one question answered about them yet so I hope this is the first. I feel a DE is a wasted pick for Seattle at 12 since he wont push Clemons or Bryant to the bench so why draft a situation rusher that hihg? Why not solidify a young OL with DeCastro making the QB adn RB situations even better!
I mentioned before and have written about it a few times that I love where SEA sits on DDay. Some names to consider: Kuechley, DeCastro would be my top 2 bets of who they take. But also could be interested in Coples, Perry (USC), Floyd, Tannehill...as for Perry, he would be great opposite Clemons-even if that is just on passing downs, which still has a lot of value and immediate value
Where do the bills go? Floyd? OL?
Would be shocked if BUFF's top 2 picks were not a WR and OT. I would jump all over Floyd at 10, esp if Rieff is the best OT on the board. But there are good WRs available in 2nd round too. BUFF could be a team that looks to move up from their early 2nd rounder to nap a OT or WR. Maybe something like Floyd and Massie
If Russell Wilson was 6' even where would he get drafted?
Second round. If he was 6'3, he might go 4th overall
What Steelers corner do you expect to step up and play opposite of Ike? Cortez, Curtis or Keenan?
I like all three and they all fit the PGH mold of developing mid round CB talent. And I bet they add another in the 3rd/4th round of this draft. My bet is Cortez Allen though. Will be a great competition-and might create some depth through the preseason.
hey Matt,, Are you hearing anything about the Detroit Lions and Philly making a trade that invole Samuel and a third round for Cliff and a 5th round?
Avril is great, but Philly signed Babin last year at this time, just gave Cole huge money and used an early 1st rounder on Graham recently. I know you collect pass rushers, but I doubt Avril is someone they are after. Also, I think Avril is worth more than the deal you suggested. DET could use Samuel though!
Bengals have to trade for Talib, correct?
Hmmm...they are collecting former first round picks, esp at CB. And they have been known to overlook a character flaw or two in their time...
Pete Carrol did pretty good with reggie bush & lindell white at USC, so do you think lamicheal james would fit in Seatle?
Great fit. Very different from Lynch. I like it.
I have heard rumors the Niners are interested in Fleener, would you do that if you were them giving that they already have Davis and Walker at TE?
Well, they play a lot of multiple TE sets, Harbaugh surely loves Fleener and Smith is best throwing in short/intermediate zones. I also think Walker is due to become a free agent after this year. And the Niners don't have a ton of glaring needs. Could see it.
KC Joyner recently compared Fleener to the likes of Gronk and Jimmy Graham. Far fetched or possible down the road?
Didn't read that and I do like Fleener, but I don't see him as comparable to those two. NO ONE is comparable to Gronk. And Graham is pretty much like one else either.
Would you say that Blackmon compares to Roddy White?Same size not the best in the business but surely a top 10 player?
That is a good one. I like how strong/physical Blackmon is and he might be better in that regard than White. White is more quick twitch.
Why has there been basically no mentions of Dallas Clark at all this offseason? He was a top 3 TE for many years in Indy. Are the injury issues that serious that no ones willing to pick him up?
Must be. Sometimes we don't know all the info, but the lack of interest (from Den esp) could be telling us all we need to know
Assuming Mike Wallace signs the tender and remains with the team another year, how do you see the situation sorting itself out at the end of next season when both he and Brown will be due for contracts?
Steelers could do the same thing to Brown as they did to Wallace this year...and Franchise Wallace! Bet he would love that! Oh well. I also could see PGH listening to offers for Wallace from teams that pick early in this draft that are WR starved like Jax, STL, Indy, Minn, etc...give up their early 2nd and something else substantial for Wallace.
Do you see the price paid for RGIII by the Redskins is the now the standard for a top QB or was this a case that RGIII was just so much better than the next prospect that the Skins had to overpay to get their guy?
More of the latter. Special prospect that goes 1st overall in most drafts.
The Vikes can't seriously be thinking of taking anyone other than Kalil after blowing up their offensive line, can they?
who are some good centers in the 3rd - 4th rounds?
I don't think you will get a good OC at that point...not a good OC draft
Floyd = Anquan Boldin?
Much bigger and faster though-good tough run blocker, but still not as physical as Boldin
What's your take on Mark Barron? Everyone I hear says he's great against the run but a liability in coverage but when I watch him i see a player with instincts defending the pass. Do you think he's worth the 14th pick?
I do think he is worth 14th overall and I don't think he is a liability in coverage. He isn't superb either and is better near the LOS. But he gets the most out of his ability. Could do reasonably well against today's nightmare TEs too. Will be the leader of a secondary.
RG3 will wear #10 for the skins, M-Dub. As far as Blackmon comps, I'd say Jeremy Maclin is a fair comparison...
Figured RG3 was who he was referring to, but he would be wearing #10 no matter what. I don't see the Blackmon/Maclin comp at all. Maclin is leaner and can fly.
With the way RBs are interchanged, injured, and have such short shelf life (Marion Barber retiring at 28!), how does a GM pick someone like Richardson with a top 10 pick above players who could impact more for a longer time?
Because Richardson is very special and he makes everyone on the team-both sides of the ball-better from Day 1
I don't get why interior OL positions aren't interchangable. Can you help me?
Well, OCs rarely pull. Isn't something you learn overnight-or ever if you are not athletic enough to pull it off at this level. Many OGs have never snapped in their life-esp important with all the shotgun now. And OCs almost always make the line calls-which isn't easy. And they begin every play with their head between their legs. Could go on and on with this.
Folks, I have to run! The Draft is near! I can feel it. Drop me a line on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL). I bet next week's chat will be insane!
