Jesse just said to tell you that he'll be a couple of minutes late. Lots of questions already lined up, he'll be getting to them in a few minutes.
Hi all. Welcome to our weekly Hawks chat. what a start to the playoffs huh? Both teams had optional skates today in advance of Game 4 tomorrow...3 OT games means lots of tired bodies and of course the big hits and suspensions are the storylines as well...lets talk some playoffs. fire away
Hi Jesse Do you think that Toews has found his groove yet?
Not quite. Want to see him more with the puck..its coming though...could break out at any time
Are you worried that Crawfords confidence may be down Thursday because of the weak OT goal?
Hmm. Not really..Hes been up and down all year so not sure it hit any low after last night...He needs help though..wont win games on his own as evidence by the numbers htis year..hawks offense needs to turn it up..thats the team's strength..and a little better in front of him would help but the OT goal is all on him
How important is Torres to the Coyotes on a scale of 1 to 10?
Based on this series so far he's at least a 6 or more..been doing a lot..screens, hits, etc. Its not an insignificant loss...in SOME ways he was having a better series so far than hossa (kind of quiet) but obviously we know who the better player is...but its def a loss for them..
Jesse,What does coach Q and the front office see in Marcus Kruger? He is terrible in the corners (yes he is small), loses big face-offs and has been a non factor in the regular season and in this series (-3). Any thoughts?
I think thats a little harsh though his postseason so far has been below average..hes probably a year ahead of schedule and def playing out of position when he was in the top 6...people loved him with sharp and stalberg..or maybe they loved sharp and stalberg..but they like his instincts, his fundamentals and hockey sense..needs to put on some weight and get his offense going more...still a work in progress but going in right direction..just playing ahead of where he should probably
Crawford has been FANTASTIC so far, and I sure hope it keeps going. This has been a grind-out series, very physical, Looks like we might have another rival on our hands for the future. Do you see this going 7 games? I sure do.
Cant use the word fantastic when he gives up a goal like that in OT. No way. This is the NHL. Have to be better...he's kept his team in games, no doubt..but he hasnt had a "goalie win" and gave up that bad one...on the other end Smith hasnt had a goalie win necessarily either, he gave up a soft one to toews in game 1...but OT has gone to smith 2 out of 3 so far
Do you think Hossa will be back on time for Thursday's game?
No. Q ruled him out..Im not going to speculate on the rest..but he has to be symptom free for serveral days to even give it a shot..so if there is a MAYBE at all involoved it would be game 6 back at home, that is if he's not REALLY down and out from this...sounds like he is not
Do you think there will be any supplemental fines or a suspension for the stick between Stalbergs legs during one of the MANY scrums?
Are you being sarcastic? cmon, this is hockey..stuff happens..a stick between the legs? we're going nuts with all this stuff...I hope youre being sarcastic
Jesse, I absolutely loved the fact that Crawford got in Smith's face at the end of the 2nd period. Since you talk to him, does Crawford have that tough guy sensibility to him?
No, he doesnt. Not at all. It would take a lot to get him going but he is a good teammate. But I do like the fact he turned on the tough guy act..he said he told Smith if youre going to keep taking liberties with my guys, we'll have a problem..paraphrasing there..but yeah I loved it..
How much did not having Hossa and Bollig's 10 min misconduct affect the end of the game? Line changes, tired legs, emotions, not to mention not having one of your studs (although he's been awfully quiet here)
Hard to say..whenever you shorten the bench in an OT situation there are bound to be some tired legs..I mena bollig wasnt going to play big minutes anyway but filling in for hossa def put onus on others
If Shaw received a three game suspensu=ion for his bumping the Coyotes Oscar winning Goalie...serial repeat offender Torres should recieve 40 games. Or am i missing something? This is a chance for the NHL to show it has the same guts as the NFL.
Its going to be a lot but prob not 40...you might be exagerating but I dont disagree..make the punishment really harsh and you'll stop the nonesense..if someone told me you go to jail for a month if you speed, Id slow down
Jesse, After 3 overtime games, it was obvious that both teams are out of gas. The tempo, in overtime and even before, was the slowest I have seen all year. It wasn't that Frolik was so much better all of a sudden, but it appeared that way because he was the only one with fresh legs. I'm hoping that someone other than me noticed this. We have far more elite depth than the dogs. If Q plays some of the kids I think their speed alone would give the Hawks a real advantage and help do in the dogs. Thanks, Mark
Frolik did have some jump...thats another reason to like Brandon Saad coming..some young, fresh legs..with some skill to boot...might be able to catch lightining in a bottle
Do you think a player's star power comes into play when suspensions are determined?
Thats a good question..you would like to think it does not..but man, that weber non punishment has you thinking..so Ill say yes it does
Gutless, disgusting, disgraceful, asinine - take your pick... The NHL (particularly Shanahan), Mike Smith, Raffi Torres... every one of the headhunting deniers wearing coyotes sweaters... tell me Jesse, how am I supposed to get back on board with the sport I love and the team I love when this game is being populated and run by incompetent human garbage?? From the moment I woke up yesterday the Blackhawks were being neutered by the league through delayed hearings, inconsistent suspensions, terrible penalties, dirty plays... the entire series of events is enough to make me think I'm hallucinating this entire episode
I hear ya. Im not thrilled with it either...wish we were talking about other storylines but these hits have taken 3 key players out of the lineup from both teams..thats where it matters..I do agree this isnt easy for the league but there is once solution...what I said before, go nuts, I mean really nust with the penalties and it SHOULD die down..but then again , Torres and Dan Carcillo arent getting their doctorates anytime soon..some guys cant/wont learn no matter what
Is it me, or were 2/3 of Oduya's and Kruger's passes going to Coyotes rather than Blackhawks?
Both have had bad series to date
How severe is the injury to Hossa and how long will he be out?
Hard to know...out for tomorrow..we're prob in that concussion mode so day to day progress..but at least he was communicating with teammates etc..Id like to think its more positive than negative but until he exerts himself, etc just dont know
With 81 more than likely out for tomorrows tilt. Who's going to be out there on our line? I thought Saad Should have played last night but after watching the pace of the game. It's not a place for a player with 2 games of NHL time under his belt.
He can handle it..I think. Saad with Kane and Toews..Kruger with Sharp and Stalberg again..and so forth..thats my guess...
OK, look. The Torres hit was horrible. I now officially hate the guy and he should be suspended for a long time. In addition, the consistency of punishment doled out this postseason has been borderline silly. Will all that said...How do the Blackhawks get back to winning this series? 1) who replaces Hossa, and 2) overall what do the 'Hawks need to do?
I like these questions better..Saad for now is answer to one..thats a great storyline to follow..juniors last week now (possibly) to top line replacing marian hossa. love it....2nd one is harder..cant believe they just cant win a 1-0, 2-1 games...pp HAS to score when it gets a chance..theyve had the leade a good portion of the series and are 1-2...buckle down even more and get a pp goal
Has the NHL commented on Q's remarks about the refs? And are the refs being held accountable for such an awful game?
The refs are held accountable in terms of getting more postseason assignemnts etc. Q said he was just answering a question which isnt really true. no one asked him straight out.."what did you thnk of the refs?" but anyway, the league does allow for "blowing off steam" this might fall under that category..its a close call..he didnt go on and one..might be ok...nothing from them so far
Times like these I miss "Car Bomb." I think the Hawks respond with a flurry tomorrow night and put up 4 or 5. What do you think?
Well they could have responded last night with a flurry and put up 4 or 5 and they didnt . They didnt take out Torres..not sayng they should have..but chance to respond was there..so what makes tomorrow any diff for sure? nothing. could go either way as it has..prob hawks turn now
Why do we keep putting Andrew Brunette on the Ice? The Coaches have got to make a decision to bench him and put in Hayes/Frolik/just about anyone else on the front line over him. He has not done a darn thing this series!
He's had a game and a half or whatever on the top lines..sharp hasnt done much..hossa before injury..stalberg a little quiet..some shots from these guys but thats about it..Q likes Brunette and they are short up there though I think my lines I said will be a go..could move sharp to center and have bruno and stalberg on wing..but I think he goes back to kruger up there so brnette might fall..saad is for sure top 6 guy tomorrow..no 4th line for him..
When are the Hawks defensemen going to start being more aggressive in front of our net. They blocked a lot of shots yesterday, i'll give them that but I feel like there just isn't enough urgency in own zone a lot of the time when we dont have the puck or they D backs up way too far in our own zone before challenging the Yotes offense.
You're preaching to the choir on this one...awful in front of the net and when other team has the puck with space the hawks arent great and getting it back in their own end..season long problem..migth have to address in offseason..im with ya
I understand having "your teammates back" and therefore claiming that you "hadn't seen tapes of the hit yet", but how could Shane Doan say that he heard it wasn't even that big of a hit? Especially after his comments about Shaw running into Mike Smith behind the net in Game 2?
Its just what they do...Tippett had like one sentence condeming shaw's hit about being what the league wants to eliminate but then goes on and on breaking down why Torres hit was this or that..it gets old for sure..just like the hawks "defending" carcillo...
Did Torres want to wait until out of Chicago before his hearing? just wondering why the request to delay?
Sounds like they are need to get to ny..I know his agent is in California..im guessing he wants to plead his case big time cause he knows he could be done for playoffs or what not if he gets this one wrong..so sounds like to prepare and gets everyone there, etc.
I understand Torres was not called for a penalty during the game but why was he allowed to play afterwards? Can't the NHL bar a player from coming back into a game after such a horrendous play?
We cant go down that road in game..this one may have been an easy call to make but what about the harder ones? Refs are human..they missed it, have to deal with it and move on...thats why they have supplemtal discipline...wouldnt mind a pp to start next game? could the league rule that way? I htink that a brilliant idea in the playofs! probably not.
Jesse - Is there any chance that any of these games are going to not end in a tie? I am worried that even if the Hawks somehow do win this thing - a round like this will not set them up for a long run through 3 more rounds...
Dont get ahead of yourself but yes that can have ramifications, esepcially if next round were out west but way to soon to worry about that
Has the Director of Officiating made any formal comments about the missed call? I know they were quick to point out the missed offsides call in the penguins series.
I talked to a league last night..they missed it. they;re not saying it wasnt a penalty after seeing it on replay but they didnt see the exact contact live..they saw hossa get blown up etc but just missed the head contact for whatever reason..
Do you think the fact that the NHL owns the coyotes has anything to do with most tilted officiating most people have ever seen in a series?
I have no idea..I cant imagine so, I really cant cause TV rating will die as they advance..though I guess the franchise rises in value for sale..I dont know
Jesse, I don't know much about Morrison but does he bring a physical game to the table and with playing time would he work hard? And I can't help feeling Kruger is overrated and makes too many mistakes can you see Kruger being dropped out of the lineup once Shaw returns and Frolik makes a case to play as well?
No go on Morrison. No way. Anything can happen if Saad is great and Shaw returns and Hossa too, I suppose could be Kruger to come out but I doubt it..they like his defense and he is a center..but you never know..all fluid
Hey Jesse, 6 games into the OHL playoffs Saad had 6 goals and 6 assists... do you see him being in the top 6 next year? What does he need to work on?
I think its down to experience..needs minutes..so yes, i think he could be in top 6 as soon as next yr
I know saad played the first two games of the regular season, but what can we expect from him? Two-way player? sniper/goal scorer?
Sniper and playmaker..decent enough two-way but Im sure he'll have some growing pains..thats why he has to play with toews.help him out there..highly skilled, knows how to get to scoring areas..has some sharp, some kane, and toews in him...not saying he's all 3 combined but highly skilled
How did you feel the Hawks responded last night after Hossa went down?
Well, several ways of looking at it..they took a lead but didnt dominate the game or anything and eventually lost..and Torres wasnt really attacked..now Mayers today said its playoffs, one goal game, you dont want to be runinng around exacting revenge and lose game cause of that BUT all I know is I saw Todd Bertuzzi challenge Shea Weber at the start of that next game...no insitgator I dont think, nothing. You challenge Torres you think he's backing down? Anyway, they obviosuly didnt respond great cause they didnt pull away
Do you think adding Saad to the line-up for Thursday could help add a spark with some fresh, young legs, or could he be a liablity?
I say the former and not the latter
With the replay being shown in the UC, the refs had to know they messed up missing that big blow. Why can't that be reviewed/corrected after the fact (during the game) to eject Torres?
I cant believe how many people are advocating this..there are prob 50 calls or non-calls in a game..where would it start and where would it end..replay everything? has to be some hman element..once in a while they miss a really bad one..not sure what you could REALLY do without creating a mess but maybe there is a way
I was really upset at Kane last night. The shot at the end of the first was perfect, throw it at net with some traffic. In OT, just before the game winner, he skates around, gets in between the circles and tries to do to much, loses the puck Phoenix goes the other way and scores. Is he trying to get to fancy?
Sometimes he is, yes..looking for that perfect play..have to be carefull.still, wasnt a major scoring chance yotes had..both teams are going to make mistakes..goalie cant be the last guy to make one
#8 gets rubbed off the puck way to much for my liking. I am really not a fan of the Hawks like of small, quick skating defense men. Thoughts?
Its a good point. That's their style...but I think they need one more brwany seabrook type..its not working with all puck moving guys..leddy and oduya can be "soft" in a sense..
Tell me everything you can about Saad, I'm intrigued. Maybe include how to pronounce his name correctly? :)
Hopefully you saw my assesment before and its pronouced SOD as in dirt or whatever...one thing that stood out to me in camp---unlike kruger--or others, he has an NHL body right now..he will not "look" out of place.
Torres hearing is Friday...does that mean he can play tomorrow?
No, idefninitely suspended until further notice
Jessie, does it appear to you that Phoenix seems to have more speed than us? or do we just tire late? do you think we can win this without big Hoss?
They dont have more speed..and yes I think they can win with Hoss...Torres loss hurts them some too, for what its worth..not as much as hawks but some
Jesse do you think Shanny throws the book at Torres to wrestle back some control? It seems like he may have to just to keep his job going forward. This has been a Media nightmare for NHL..
Yes. I think the Shaw suspension started that tend..hes trying to reign everyone in..Torres is done for a while for sure
trend i meant to say
Jeremy Roenick said today that, by league rule, Hossa must be out for a week after suffering a concussion. Is that right? Do we know for certain that Hossa suffered a concussion yesterday?
They fudge all that stuff but he prob will be anyway...unless total recovery..it happens
do u think brett seabrook will take a run at a coyotes player to send a message? also why didn't kaner fight in that scrum at the end of the 2nd period? he's gotta be tougher!
Again, its not like Torres happened late 3rd..hawks arent the retaliating type of team..now maybe if the game was a blow out..so no, I dont think seabrook will...kane got a little nasty
Have you ever seen a cheaper, dirtier hit ever against a Blackhawk player? Personally, I can't remember ever seeing anything this bad..
Yes, Wisneiwski's hit on Seabs, in my opinion, was far worse...
What sort of impact can Saad make?
Impossible for me to know but my gut says there might be something there..catch a little adrenaline rush..the unknown for PHx about him..I say he does "something" positive..just a gut feeling
Frolik had a fantastic game last night. If he keeps this up will his play keep Shaw out of the lineup assuming the Hawks stretch the series?
Who knows but I doubt it. Shaw was playing well also. Maybe someone else comes out..Lets see frolik do it again!
When we will get back to talking about Hockey. Granted it was a vicious check and torres deserves 10 game suspension but the Hawks have been out played in all three games. If they do not start playing better D, stop all the puck turnovers and start winning a few battles along the boards they will be out in 6 games
Amen. Agree 100 percent
It seems like most the fans and analysts are always left more confused and angered by the decisions made by Shanahan on suspensions. How do the players feel?
Toews was pretty confused as well..most dont pay attention unless it affects them..but the vets say players need to police themselves better and respect each other more..course when one of thier teamates does it, you geta diff reaction
Leddy was dreadful last night...olsen got 4.5 minutes??? whats the point of taking out the veteran and watching seabs and dunc play over 30 minutes??? Our top defense is gonna be running on fumes by game 5
Agree...not sure..havent addressed that with q with so much else going on..must not have liked something or thought game was too fast or something..
Thats it for today..thanks for all the questions..i know there is a lot of angry people out there about hossa and shaw situations..we'll see how hawks rebound tomorrow..check out blog for all sorts of stuff...vids of saad and toews plus stories, etc...follow me on twitter @espnchihawks..talk to you later
