Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:10 PM)

Sorry for being late. I just had to finish a blog about Kyle Boller working out for the Ravens today. I'm not joking Ravens fans. He's in town along with Dennis Dixon. It looks like the Ravens want to get more experience at backup quarterback. So, let's kick off the chat.

Joey (Pittsburgh)

Where will Mike Wallace end up?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:11 PM)

It looks like Pittsburgh. Teams have until Friday to sign him to an offer sheet. Looks unlikely at this point. A good free-agent class for wide receivers and a deep draft at that position hurt interest for him.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What AFC North Team do you think will have the Hardest Schedule in 2012?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:12 PM)

Based on how the schedule is laid out, it has to be the Steelers. The schedule makers did them few favors. Pittsburgh has two home games before Oct. 28 and has a Week 4 bye. That means 13 straight games without a break.

tommy (ohio) [via mobile]

as the draft nears, the more i watch highlights of trich, the more i feel he IS the right choice for Cleveland at #4. Unfortunately, i also have a feeling they will trade out of that slot and miss out on a chance to get a game-changing back that we haven't had in many, many years.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:13 PM)

That's a legitimate fear. I agree that Richardson is the right pick at that spot. But the Browns love picking up additional picks. If they trade down, they can say goodbye to Richardson.

Scott (Columbus)

With the schedule being released, I believe the Browns will have a hard time winning games even if they draft well on the offensive side of the ball. Do you see them being the second team ever to finish 0-16?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:17 PM)

Scott: There's no question that the Browns have a rough schedule. It's the third-hardest based on strength of schedule. I don't see the Browns going winless. They have home games against Buffalo and KC. There is also a road game at Indy. Those are the ones off the top of my head that I can see as wins.

Mitch (Seville, OH)

Everyone is going to be looking forward to Browns vs RGIII matchup at the end of the year. Do you think that makes it better that it is late in the season or worse for Browns in terms of beating him? Better with more film to study, worse since he'll have more time to learn the pro game?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

Mitch: You want to get rookies early in the season. They will be less familiar with the offense and the speed of the game will be tough to start out. You would want to see him late if he is getting beat up throughout the season, though.

caleb (ohio)

Should the Browns draft a Right Tackle, or should they sign a free agent?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:20 PM)

Caleb: You have to draft one at this point. Still not sure why they didn't go after Eric Winston when he was available. There was cap room available. The Browns should be able to get a good right tackle late in the first round or early in the second. Stanford's Jonathan Martin and Mississippi's Bobby Massie have been linked to Cleveland.

Drew (JMU)

The Ravens don't go out of their way to draft needs in the draft, they always take the best available player. What highly toted prospects in the draft do you think could fall to the ravens at 29 like Jimmy Smith did last year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

The Ravens would love to see Alabama linebackers Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower to fall as well as Georgia offensive lineman Cordy Glenn.

Brad (Berkeley, CA)

Hey JH. What aspect of their schedule do you think will hurt the Steelers more?1. Bye week in week 42. Playing both Ravens games so close together3. 2 west coast trips in the first three weeksPersonally, the Ravens games bother me the most. The NFL has proven time and again they can't manage this fantastic rivalry.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:22 PM)

Brad: That early bye week is a punch in the gut. Teams prefer the bye either in the middle of the season or toward the end of it. Doesn't do much good to have one in Week 4.

John (Ohio)

I know the experts say you shouldn?t take an offensive tackle in the top 5 of the draft, but man to have Matt Kalil and the O-line set for years and potentially 3 Pro bowl lineman protecting the QB is just too tempting. What type of money did Joe Thomas sign for after he was drafted and what kind of money will Matt Kalil get if the Browns take him at 4?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:25 PM)

John: Don't have the exact numbers in front of me, but the top 10 draft picks don't make the outrageous money this year. Still, most teams don't invest a top-5 pick in a right tackle. That's territory for a left tackle.

Brandon (Newark, OH)

If teams such as the Bengals, Ravens, ect. are not interested in signing Mike Wallace, why wouldn't they at least make him a lowball offer if for no other reason than to make the Steelers match it??

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:25 PM)

Wallace wouldn't sign a low ball offer. RFAs still have the choice whether to sign an offer sheet or not.

John (the internets)

Bengals vs. Palmer isn't prime time worthy?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:26 PM)

I have no answer for that one. I thought that was a lock to be a Thursday night game. The NFL loves drama, and that certainly has a lot of it.

steeldee23 (Jacksonville fl)

Given the change over and Difficult schedule for this upcoming season, will this be a make or break season for coach Tomlin? Or at least his most difficult coaching challange? Glad to hear coach kirby is back and doing well!

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:28 PM)

SteelDee: I agree that it is really good news about Kirby. As far as the schedule, to start with four out of six on the road including two at AFC West teams is daunting. But as Tomlin says, "The Standard is the standard."

Adam (DC)

While many project the Steelers to take Hightower with their first pick, I think it makes little sense unless he is the best player available at 24. Sylvester, Foote, and Timmons round out what is still the best linebacking corps in the game. In addition, if the Steelers take a LB in the first round, they will need to take an offensive linemen, defensive tackle, and running back without enough picks. That being said, do you they should look into trading down from 24 with a team interested in a WR or someone else so they can get two second and two third round picks to fill all of their needs? While they may not draft a star, they can fill many needs with young and athletic players.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:30 PM)

Adam: The Steelers don't have a history of trading in the first round. I see them staying at No. 24 and take either a linebacker or offensive lineman.

GJ (Baltimore)

Jamison, I agree that the Browns should take Richardson at 4. The only scenario where i could feel different is if the Dolphins trade up and take Tannehill at 3. Then the temptation of moving down to say 6 and picking up a 2nd rd pick from the Rams will great. Assume the Rams take Blackmon, the Browns are guaranteed that Kailil and/or Richardson will be available. Do you make this trade? What are your thoughts?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:31 PM)

GJ: I don't make the trade. You can't go wrong with either Kalil or Richardson. Kalil could be a Pro Bowl-type lineman for the next decade, and Richardson could be the rookie of the year in 2012. I say stay at No. 4 and make a decision.

Dov (Israel)

I know this isn't one of the popular questions, but do you think the Browns will ever give Phil Dawson a multi-year contract? Or will they keep on franchising him? The guy, sadly enough as a kicker, is our MVP and deserves it.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:34 PM)

Dov: I'm not sure Dawson is interested in a long-term deal with the Browns at this point. He is probably a little irked that he's been given the tag for two straight years. At his age, he would've liked to hit free agency.

Jake H. (Altoona, PA)

Which DTs are hopefully going to be available for the Steelers later in the draft since Poe won't be available in the first round? Which one would best fit the 3-4 scheme and hopefully become the clog of the future?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:36 PM)

The nose tackles who should be available after the first round are: BYU's Loni Fangupo (second round), Washington's Alameda Ta'amu (third round) and Alabama's Josh Chapman (fourth round).

Outlaw (Baltimore)

I think the best move for the Ravens is to grab a tall, fast receiver like Stephen Hill or Reuben Randle. Teaming a player like that with Torrey Smith on the outside will really open up the middle of the field and create play action. Thoughts?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:38 PM)

I think the Ravens need to think of a wide receiver early because Anquan Boldin might be in his final season with the team. But the Ravens could be thinking of taking one later. Mel Kiper Jr. floated out the name T.Y. Hilton from Florida International. He's a wide receiver who would make an immediate impact as a returner. He's projected to go in the fourth round.

Jordan (Cleveland)

Your thoughts on the Asante Samuel to Browns trade rumors?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:39 PM)

Other than the Heckert-Philly connection, I don't see it happening. I see Haden and Patterson as the starting CBs this year for the Browns.

JPerkVA (Blacksburg, Va)

Do you think Jason Brown will sign with the Ravens on that one year deal that was offered and if he does, do they draft OL in the first round or address the pass rush?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:40 PM)

I don't see the Ravens signing an offensive lineman until after the draft. I think they want to see if they can address some voids with younger players. If they don't draft a guard or center, then Brown comes into play.

Dillion (Ohio )

Do you think the browns will take Richerson with 4th pick or fall for the QB trick again

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:40 PM)

I think Richardson is a no-brainer at No. 4.

Rasputin (Moscow)

Do you think the Steelers' road trip to Cleveland will be easy to overlook as it's sandwiched by both Ravens games this season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:42 PM)

Don't think the Steelers will overlook another division opponent. The bigger concern should be the games following the stretch of playing the Ravens twice in three weeks. It will be tough for the Ravens and Steelers to heal up quickly after those two grudge matches.

Gary Stines (Eglin Air Force Base, FL)

Who in your opinion do you see as the #2 WR for the Bengals this year? And dont give me the same answer that Marvin Lewis has been saying... (binns or tate)

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:43 PM)

I think it could be Baylor's Kendall Wright if the Bengals take him with their second first-round pick. I also like Jordan Shipley but he is still recovering from his knee injury.

Jim (NC)

Who in your opinion has the easiest schedule in the first 4 games of the season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:45 PM)

Jim: I hate to classify as any schedule as "easy" but the more favorable start is the Ravens, who play three of their first four at home. It does include games against the Bengals and Patriots, but the Ravens were undefeated at home. So any game at M&T Bank Stadium works in their favor.

Adam (Columbus)

JH, I recently read on the Bengals website that the Lawfirm wants to prove he's a 3 down back and I feel he is motivated. Do you think he can play into a 3 down back role this season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:46 PM)

Adam: I see BJGE as the featured back and he could be a three-down one. He's a great pass protector. But he might have to share carries especially if the Bengals take a running back in the second or third round.

Kristoff (West Lafayette)

Any chance the Bengals trade a pick for Asante Samuel? What do you think he is worth pick wise?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:46 PM)

No. Bengals have enough veteran corners. They need young ones now.

Kosko (NYC)

If the Browns have another 4-12 or 5-11 season, do you still see Shurmur as the head coach for a third season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:48 PM)

The seat would definitely be hot. But he might be given a pass because the Browns have yet to find a franchise quarterback.

Teelin (Springboro)

Did the Bengals actually improve anywhere during free agency or did they just add names and tread water in terms of skill?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:48 PM)

Guard and running back. Both were solid upgrades.

P Griggs (Hampton, VA)

Are the Ravens counting on any contributions from Sergio Kindle this season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:49 PM)

It would be a bonus to get any games out of Kindle. The Ravens are not counting on anything from Kindle. But if he can get on the field, that would be a pleasant surprise for the team.

Nick (Harrison,OH)

Thoughts on RB Pead to the Bengals in the 2nd or 3rd RD?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:50 PM)

I say more third or fourth round. Virginia Tech's Wilson, Boise State's Martin and Miami's Miller would all go before Pead.

Nick (Syracuse)

Jamison, this seems like a no-brainer to me: The Bengals should sign Mike Wallace for 3 reasons: He will complement Green nicely, the Bengals have cap room, and they have an extra #1 pick to give to the steelers by rule of the tender.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:51 PM)

Unless the Bengals make a move in two days, this is just not happening.

Nick (Harrison,OH)

what do you think about the Bengals taking a DT in the 2nd like Wolfe? it seems we got gashed up the middle a lot and Rey getting OL free to block him

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:52 PM)

I like Wolfe. I think he could sneak into the first round.

Taylor Pace (NY)

Good afternoon mr hensley. I am just wondering if you think the bengals have a chance to repeat a winning record finally since the 70's?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:53 PM)

I think the Bengals have an excellent chance of doing so. I think they will make the biggest improvement to the team in this draft.

Mike (South Dakota)

Do you agree that the Ravens will need to draft at least 2 offensive linemen this year. Tyrod Taylor will be getting the bulk of the work in preseason games and they need to keep him upright when the starters are out.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:54 PM)

Mike: Getting a guard has to be one of the top priorities. Not sold on Jah Reid taking over at LG for Ben Grubbs.

Nick (Syracuse)

Pick to finish #1 in the division next season?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:54 PM)

There is a thing called the draft happening next week. That could help some teams.

Jordan (Casper, WY)

I'm thinking the Bengals are gonna address OG in the second round and take the best available DE to replace the aging Geathers. Dunlap and Chandler Jones would look good together.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:55 PM)

You would get no argument from me on taking Chandler Jones. That would be a good selection.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:56 PM)

Thanks to everyone for participating in the chat. Let's have a pre-draft one next week. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week.
