Hey gang. Sorry I'm a couple of minutes late. I will go long to make up for it. What's on your mind?
Afternoon Terry, I was there in Rockingham on Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree that the Cup will never return but the Truck Series(my favorite) has a place on the 2013 schedule. I think Nationwide may go there eventually, but Andy had done a great job in bringing the racing back. I'll make the drive down there again next year.
Hi Mary. I agree it deserves both Trucks and NW. But I have to say I was surprised it didn't sell out. With all the hype and talk about bringing back The Rock, I would have thought they could have gotten 30,000 to show up.
are they unlocking the EFI mystery?
Apparently Penske Racing isn't yet. They had another problem at Texas.
Will Terry Labonte or Bill Elliott practice and qualify the GoDaddy Chevy at Darlington for Danica?
Very funny Tyra. For now, the 10 is back in the top 35.
Anyone notice that Indycar is way more competitive than NASCAR right now? Although Penske is the only one winning, the product is better. Maybe that is because Indycar isn't a spec series like NASCAR is right now...
How can you say it's more competitive when one team has won all the races, and even had to start with a 10-spot penalty at Long Beach.
Do you think Mike Ford could make some waves with Carl Edwards?
Maybe, but not happening.
terry,anything new on dodge ?
Not yet. They said it probably would be June or so before they had an announcement. I tell you one thing though, If I'm Chip Ganassi, I would seriously consider that move.
Hi Terry, with all the money that Roush has why did he not put Trevor Bayne in the race at Texas with his money. He was fourth in points and a win may bring sponsorship. Trevor just does not catch a brake.
It is bad for Trevor, but Roush is not going to run races anymore out of his own pocket. And I don't blame him. You can go broke in a hurry doing that. If sponsors don;t know by now what Trevor can do, they never will.
Hey Terry! Which current driver in the Top 12 do you see missing the Chase and which driver outside the Top 12 currently without a win will make the Chase?
Good question. But you relaly have to go by the top 10. I'll play along. Inside falling out _ Bowyer. Outside moving in. _ Kyle.
My take on Newman vs. Johnson. There was 30 laps or more to go, with a chance a caution could still happen. Wasn't Newman smart to try to stay 1 lap down instead of surrendering and going 2 laps down, so he could possibly get a wave around if a caution did come out? I mean if there were 10 laps to go, Newman would;ve likely moved over, but 30? that's still alot of laps. What do you think
I disagree. Protocal is to get out of the way unless you are trying to stay on the lead lap.
Ok whos the man to beat this weekend and the dark horse?
I'm going with the Biff to make it two in a row, byt JJ is really good at Kansas also. And so is Carl. My darkhorse would be Kahne.
Hi Terry!what is your favorite style of chicken at KFC? mine is the honey bbq!
Wow, a chicken question,. That's a first. I like KFC's chicken pot pie.
How come everyone was upset that smoke didn't have the points lead with 2 wins but no one minds Junebug being in the top 5 with no wins in 4 years!
Really Tyler, you don't think Junior gets enough criticism?
Where do you put Denny Hamlin among championship contenders this year?
Not great at the moment, but there's a long way to go. Some of Denny's best tracks are coming up _ Richmond, Pocono. He is capable of making a run, but JGR hasn't shown me they are up to it so far.
Seeing some drivers do better than usual, Jr, and some do worse, Kyle, what percentage of a drivers success is the car? Jr didn't just become the second best driver in NASCAR and I doubt Kyle forgot how to drive. So in terms of success, how much does the car matter?
I wrote about that today Cory saying you have to have the car no matter how good you are. Kurt is proof of that this year. Most of the guys at the Cup level are great drivers. That's not enough. It takes great equipment and a great crew.
Were is all the outrage about Pastrana getting his spot gaurenteed due to it being bought and not earned on the track? When SHR did it for Danica people actd like someone just kicked their puppy! Doesn't the lack of outrage just make people look ignorant and hypocritical?
Maybe, but I don't like anyone getting a free spot they didn't earn.
Terry, told you about Biffle last week. :) Seems like Roush is pretty confident about Ricky Stenhouse being the 6 next year in Cup full time, you see it happening?
Nick, that might hapen later this year. If they get some sponsorship, Jack is ready to put Ricky is the 6 right now.
If Biffle wins the title, the first to win in all three divisions, is he a HOF lock? I think he would be. A championship would greatly enhance his legacy
It would help, but Biff is a long way for a HoF lock at this point.
I thought Smoke would run well at Texas last weekend because he won there last November. What happened?
No one knows. That was the shocker of the weekend. They completely missed the set-up from the time they unloaded. Really odd to be that far off when you won at that track five months earlier.
Terry after all the troubles he got into last year is kyle busch on a shorter leash this year then the other drivers?
Well, he knows he can't just punt someone into a wall under caution, so yeah.
Good morning, Terry. Did you have you have any favorite BBQ spots in Texas and what do you recommend around our neighborhood? Thanks.
You guts are hungry, lots os food questions today. Dickey's is really good Q in North Texas, but I spent most of my time eating TexMex. As for the Pac NW, I love Salty's at Alki Point, and for fast food, Spud's in Kirkland.
What active drivers do you think will make the HOF one day? (Not necessarily a lock right now).
Plenty of locks like Gordon, Stewart, JJ and Martin. Not locks that could make it are Kenseth, maybe Biff, Harv and even Brad K is they gets a Cup title or two.
What is the most surprising thing you have seen so far this season?
You mean other than JPM hitting a jet dryer? Well, 234 consecutive green-flag laps at TMS was quite a shocker, and a bore.
Is there a trademark on GoDaddy green like there is on Petty blue?
No, and who else wants that horrid color?
If you were running The Rock, what adjustments would you make in order to get a Cup date?
You could make the seats solid gold and it wouldn't matter. Cup isn't going back the The Rock and the Dodgers aren't going back to Brooklyn.
Terry, I totally agree about EGR considering a move to Dodge. I'd rather be the #1 team there than the #4 team at Chevy.
That's my point Mary. But it's complicated because Dodge needs an engine program. EGR is a combined engine program now with RCR, so all that would have to change. But I'd still do it. Chip always will be the Chevy step child behind Hendrick, RCR and even SHR. The other complication is Teresa, who said they would always be Chevy. If that means buying her out (she's only a figure head now) and eliminating the Earnhardt name from the team, so be it.
Really? You don't like that track, The Rock? Do you really want more 1.5 milers if you were Helton?
I do like it, but it's not getting a Cup date again. NASCAR can't go back to add old tracks in rural NC. That ship has sailed. What it needs to do is build new tracks in big markets like Denver, Seattle and even NYC.
Dale Jr. has as many top 5's and one less top 10 right now in 2012 as he did in all of 2010. Just sayin'- The win will come, I am just happy to be unhappy with a 10th place finish!!
Being unhappy with a 10-the place finish says a lot of how the team is running.
Do you think Smoke has finally cooled off and won't contend for wins as much?
I don't think we can say that off of one bad week. Everybody has an off week here and there. I think Tony will be fine.
We hear all the rumors that EGR might be the likely team to switch to Dodge. But what would switching really take? They have the ECR engine alliance with RCR. And I doubt the "E" in EGR would be too happy.
She wouldn't be, but who cares. Do what's best for the team, not what's best for an owner in name only.
Terry, what is your favorite part of covering the races at kansas Speedway and what do you think of the racing and facility? Thanks!
I love that track. Great location and easy traffic flows. I love going to te Hereford House when I go to KC. And the Plaza district is always fun. KC is one of my favorite stops on the circuit.
Woooooooooo Terrry I got to stop you right there ...Nascar does not to be in Denver Seattle and NYC ...who are you kidding ..you might as well said put a track in Anckrodge, Alaska
We'll agree to disagree Griff. NASCAR needs to be in big markets that dont' have a NASCAR event.
Terry, do you think Danica is ultimately good or bad for the sport?
Incredibly good. She brings a huge amount of attention from people who don't normally follow the sport.
With all this talk of Rockingham, what type of surface is on the track, it didn't seem to be as hard on tires, or has Goodyear improved a tire that much for that track?
No track is hard on tires these days because, in my opinion, the tires are too hard. That's what hurt the racing in Bristol and Texas. The tires need to fall off more during a run.
Say they do add another track, who gives up the race now, NASCAR or Smith?
If a new track comesd in, likely candidates to lose a date are Pocono or Dover. Pocono definitely would lose a date in NYC got a track. Neither of those tracks are owned by Bruton or ISC. But a new track being built is a long, long way from happening.
But don't they get an awful lot of rain in Seattle? We might have a lot of races on Monday.
Not in the summer Christine. I live in the Seattle area and summers are spectacular. Typically 75 degrees and sunny.
Is there any serious talk of actually building a track in the markets you mention? Has anything other than a cookie cutter track been built in the last 20 years?
ISC bought land on Staten Island to build a track, but never could work it out. ItT also looked at two locations in the Seattle area. The problem is ISC wants public funding to build the tracks, which isn't going to happen in this economy. And the size of the new tracks would be similar to Richmond with about 80,000 seats _ no cookie cutter.
Shouldn't it be ruled a monopoly that NASCAR owns the tracks and the series, I wish that lawsuit would have passed a few years ago that would have forced them to sell ISC!
That's a serious legal issue, but I've learned that antitrust violations are a very difficult thing to prove in court.
So, if/when tracks ever happen in Denver, Seattle and NYC is it safe to assume they will NOT be 1.5 mile cookie cutters, even if that's what they were originally planned as? They had to have learned by now, right?
They never were planned as 1.5-mile tracks and you can safely assume any new track wouldn't be that size.
NASCAR doesn't "need" to be anywhere. In case you missed it, they're currently in the second biggest market in the US (Los Angeles) and can't get more than 90,000 people to Auto Club.
So what do you want to do, run every race in NC and just be a regional sport? NASCAR needs to be in the LA market because sponsors want to be there. It isn't just about attendance. And there were more people at the Fontana race that the Martinsville race, but no one mentions that.
Heard Tony Stewart has offered his track at Eldora to have a race on. Would love to see that, even if it was a throw back to the old days of racing on dirt.
It would be fun to watch, but not in the cards.
Speaking of HOF... Do you think that Rusty's little brother Kenny is a candidate someday?
I love Herman, but not a chance.
Holy Crap! MWR has more cars in the top 11 in OWNERS points than Hendrick, Gibbs, or Penske! The 55 is 7th. Mark Martin may get an owners championship for the team!
MWR is the big success story of the season. And I'm not surprised. Adding Scott Miller to run things and having the new TRD engine alignment has really helped, along with Bowyer and Martin behind the wheel.
I wouldn't mind having a race in NYC but logistically it would be very difficult to accomplish. Whether it's on Staten Island or Long Island, traffic would be a nightmare.
That's nothing new for a Cup race Kristin. And New Yorkers are used to traffic.
Are Bill Elliott, Terry Labonte, and Dale Jarrett HOF locks, I'm assuming you'd say yes since you say Martin is a lock
I think they are,, but it's going to take several years to get all the deserving people in.
regarding nascar being in new markets...was it last year or 2 years ago the cup was in charlotte and there was hardly any fans in the stands. just saying...
Two years ago lots of track had attendance issues. In a perfect world, each track would have only one date. Bt there aren't enough tracks for that.
Chris Economaki not on Hall of Fame list...Your thoughts?
Should be and will be. An absolutelty broadcasting legend and a man I consider a dear friend.
When you talk of the HOF, will they ever have a vote to say add one rerson a year by an old timers committee?
It's been discussed, but it doesn't look like they need. They've been getting in old timers every year.
Who is your prediction for surprise race winner this season (ala Menard and Smith last season)?
I'll go with Dinger.
what do you think about the 5 segments of the all star race?
Not a bad idea, but a better idea would be to move the All-Star race around to a different tracks every year, just like MLB and the NBA does it.
Is the HOF suffering because there weren't enough initial inductees? Or is it something else? Attendance is way below initial estimates.
I think it's the economy more than anything else. The place is amazing to walk through. I would encourage any NASCAR fan, or anyone period for that mattr, to go. It's really something to see.
Gotta run folks. Great chat today. Everyone have a great week and enjoy the race at Kansas this weekend.
