do you see nick swisher in pinstrips next year?
No. I think he will be elsewhere
Is it me or is Granderson seem lost or has regressed at the plate this year compared to last?
I don't think so. It is only 11 games in. He may not be as good as last year. But last year, he was an MVP candidate.
Why doesn't Girardi move Teixiera out of one of the middle spots in the lineup to have him gain some confidence? The middle of the lineup is brutal right now!
Girardi has gone through this almost every year and so far he has stuck with him. But he did move him out of the three hole so that is a start.
At what point do the Yankees stop making excuses for Phil Hughes? On a related not, when Pettitte is finally ready, do you see the Yankees sending Hughes down to AAA (a la Nova from last year) to straighten himself out?
First question: Soon.Hughes needs to start pitching well if he is going to remain being important. He hasn't been very good for a yar and a half. They could send him down as a wake-up call, no doubt.Plus, though, I like Phil personally, he gets hurt too much.
If Hughes goes to the bullpen, what (realistically) are they chances of them being able to dump Soriano?
I would say less zero.Ok, maybe not that low. One percent. Someone would have to be desperate. He makes a lot of dough. Yanks could eat some of the salary, in theory.Overall, I don't see it happening.
Hey andrew, i was just wondering whats your take on the Yankees so far and their upcoming series vs the Redsox. Do you think they can win 2 games in fenway? And are you woory about pineda of his velocity being down. In my opinion im not, but your the expert. Are you excited that pettite is making a comeback? How many wins do you think the Yankees will get this year?I love your work on espnnewyork.com
Andrew, you have good taste. Thanks. If Pineda's velocity doesn't comeback, I think there is concern because that may point to a larger problem and there is a question if he is a No. 1 or No. 2 if he his not at 94-plus.Pettitte is a great story to cover. Always interesting.
Who is coming back first, Pettitte or Pineda?
should Nick Swisher be traded before the trading deadline for a young infielder? The yanks can use Dickerson and Jones to play everyday outfield
Who would you rather have coming out of the Yankees bullpen, David Robertson or Aroldis Chapman?
Robertson. He may be the best reliever in baseball.
Andew it seems with the depth the yankees have in starting pitching what do you think the yankees could get for hughes or garcia.
Garcia, not much. Hughes, more, but not a great package. They would be selling low and his salaries are about to go up with questionable production.
With the slow start of Freddy Garcia, in your opinion, is he the guy that is bumped to the pen when Pettitte returns?
Garcia or Hughes, at this point. Whoever picks it up, probably stays in. If Phelps continues to do what he has been doing, he will be more in the conversation.
Could the Yankees loose Cano? He will absolutely command a substantially large contract. And with the supposed wish's of management to get below the luxury tax threshold. Is it a strong possibility Cano will sign elsewhere?
It wouldn't shock me if they didn't sign him to one of these mega long contracts. They are not really good deals.I think they will want to keep him, but with Scott Boras it will be a long, tough negotiation. And I wouldn't be surprised if Robbie ended up leaving.
Is there a timetable for Pineda's return? How is he progressing?
Pineda could have his first minor league start this weekend. Then it will probably be at least three weeks, maybe more, until they will consider bringing him to the majors.
So far Phil hasn't looked very good. I still think that he can pitch well so we need to give him some more time but with Andy coming soon and Pineda eventually coming back time is running out. If Hughes get booted off the rotation where do you think he will go? Bullpen or Triple AAA to continue to start? Also whats going to happen to Phelps? You think he will stay in the majors all year long or get sent down at some point because there is no room?
He could be at Triple-A.I think Phelps stays. I don't see him going down anytime soon. He has more value in the pen than a Hughes or Garcia would.
In Hughes vs Garcia for the final rotation spot, will the Yankees go strictly with whomever is pitching better at the time, or are they determined to stick with younger Hughes unless it's a complete blowout?
I think Hughes would have a slight edge if it is close. But it has to be close.
Hi Andrew. The Yankees have an abundance of starting pitching both on the current 25 man roster and in waiting (Pettitte/Pineda). Who do you see as the Yanks starting five down the stretch (in Aug/Sept) provided there are no injuries?
Who knows, but I'll go:SabathiaKurodaPettitteNovaPineda
I recall last year there was some concern about Nova's ability to miss bats but he seems to be getting a good number of strikeouts so far this season. Did he make any significant adjustments? Also, I'm going to be in the bleachers in center on Friday. Any chance you can tell Cano to send a few balls my way?
Nova doesn't miss bats, which often portends problems. But all Nova does is win so I wouldn't worry about it too much. At least, not yet.
When do you expect Pineada to be ready? Also, red hot starts by Bichette, Mason Williams, and Gary Sanchez is Charleston. They look legit!
Pineda won't be on a major league mound until the Yanks know he is ready to go. So even if he comes through his rehab, he could be in Triple-A getting everything together before he is up.All three guys you mention have great potential.
Hi Andrew, really enjoy your work. I am surprised Chavez has not seen any time. Will he play soon ? Otherwise he'll hurt himself shaking the rust off?
I would suspect Chavez will be in the lineup one of the next two days; especially with a day game in Boston on Friday.
What does Girardi do if Pettitte comes back and is ineffective? Does he show loyalty or does he put him in the pen (or cut him)?
Interesting. They will give Andy some rope, but at some point they would have to make a decision. In other words, eventually, they would have to put him somewhere else if he weren't pitching well as a starter.
Do you think A-Rod break's Bonds' record? He'll have to get about 20 HR's a year for the next 6 years, but I don't think that's a lock anymore
Is it too much to ask Sabathia to get in shape for the 9 digit salary he's receiving? We'll be lucky to get one more year out of him
Too much. He loves Capn' Crunch!Seriously, he has been heavy and great so far as a Yankee. If he slows down, people will point to his weight, rightly or wrongly.
How short a leash will Garcia and Hughes have on their next starts? Any chance they bat Gardner 1, Jeter 2, Cano 3, Arod 4, Tex 5, Grandy 6, i.25ģi.5?i.5?i.5?i.5? 7, DH,8, Martin 9 with the way Jeter has been hitting
I guess it is possible. But I think Girardi likes his set lineups. After awhile, that does seem possible if Gardner continues to hit and get on-base.
At this early juncture, I don't see a weakness on the Yankees...their lack of productivity in the middle of the order will right itself and the back end of the rotation will strengthen come in mid-May....do you agree?
I guess.I think this was the presumption going in. So far, this has not played out.Still, besides A-Rod and Teixeira, I don't see any real reason for concern yet.
Gardner continues to exceed my hitting expectations. I know he doesn't have much power, but do you think he could make an All-Star team someday?
Hello Andrew, How are you? Since Mariano Rivera has not pitched the last 6 days it got me wondering if he is affected by too much rest like many other pitchers? I was wondering if you could please find out and tell me what are Mariano Rivera's career statistics with 3 days or more of rest and are they good or bad? If you cannot find out by the end of the chat, then from your memory, do you think is he affected by too much rest? Thank you very much for reading this and I look forward to reading your response! All the best!
I'm well. They are going to take it easy as much as they can.I don't think anything impacts Mo. That is why he is the greatest.
How good is the talent down in Charleston? Is this a High A talent team playing in a Low A league, or are these kids THAT good?
They are very talented. Jose Campos has been unbelievable so far. One run in 16 inning, 18Ks, 4 BBs
Fast forward to the end of the season. Yankees finish winning 85 games, miss the playoffs (to the Rays and Blue Jays of all people). Does the $189m salary "cap" go out of the window?
Great point.I don't see how they cut payroll if they fail to make the playoffs.
Why not make Granderson bat 5th vs. righties with Gardner 1st and Tex 6th with Grandy and Tex flipping against lefties? Does Girardi not want Tex to be insulted being dropped to 6th after already being demoted from 3rd to 5th?
I think they believe Teixeira will hit. He always starts slow.I think you have to get through May or so before Teixeira is moved down.
With Pettite and Pineda looming to join the rotation at some point later this year, and the Yanks looking to shed some salary, and teams looking for closers, would a Hughes transition to the bullpen, spell the end of Soriano in a trade? Whats the likelihood of getting good prospects for Soriano since closers are a premium?
Soriano makes too much money to have real value. Most teams have a closer. No one really wanted him for that role and for his money after he had the most saves in baseball with the Rays. So I don't think many would want him now.
If you had to say now, do you think Soriano would close next year if Rivera retires and Soriano doesn't opt out instead of Robertson closing?
Robertson.He looks amazing.
Thanks for the Hughes answer. Can you give us an update on the Killer B's in the Yank's system?
Banuelos is hurt with a bad back. He is on the 7-day DL.Betances has started slow. Two losses. Gave up five runs in 4 2/3rds the other night. They haven't been killer.
Arod seems to be doing better in the 3 hole, why not keep him there and let Cano settle into cleanup?
Not the worst idea.Girardi talks about lefty matchups, blah, blah, blah. But teams rather face A-Rod than Cano so A-Rod conceivably make get more pitches he can drive.
Even though Teixeira isn't a "bust" per se, don't you think his contract is a bad one in hindsight? He's basically Mark Reynolds with a gold glove making almost $200M
Tex is very lucky that he is a Yankee. Most teams, he would be the star attraction and would be a bit of disappointment since he doesn't hit in the first or last month of hte season.
Well, thanks everyone for a nice chat. I'm heading over to the stadium now for the Twins and the Yankees.Have a great day and thanks for reading ESPN New York's Yankee blog.
