Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Eric (Atlanta)

Start us off right, Pat! where will you be on the night of the draft and will you be blogging with us?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:55 PM)

I will be at One Buccaneer Place. Bucs have the earliest pick in the division. Was in Carolina last year when Panthers had No. 1 pick. Also, just a heads-up that our Blog Network mock draft will be done live on the site Monday, starting at 1 p.m.

Mort (Rural Hall, NC)

Do you ever get an idea for a story from a question someone ask during one of these chats?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Yes, frequently. You guys, and girls, have lots of good questions.

Jeff B (Far From Falconland)

Pat, true or false: Dimitroff will draft an olineman with one of his first two picks in the draft.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

I'm going with "true" on that one.

Matt (Indianapolis)

Pat, is Ronde playing FS just an experiment, or is it a legitimate possibility this year? Thanks.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Possible he could end up there. But lot depends on how they come out of the draft. I'd guess right now and say we could see Ronde shuffling between safety and CB as a situational player. But I think we'll have a better idea after the draft.

Steve (Rural Hall, NC)

Hurney said that the Panthers would not draft a player that needs to be developed with their 1st pick. Do you think therefore that they will draft someone like Cox or Kuechly rather than someone like Brockers or Poe?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Yep, I'd agree with that.

CAPT-ATL (Atlanta Duh)

In your opinion, what are the chances the Sean Payton coaches for the Saints in 2013? In light of his arrogance and insubordination to both his internal management (Benson), and external leadership(Goodell), I'd put it 50/50 at best with his track record.

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Well, he says he wants to coach the Saints in 2013. NFL has made it pretty clear that he needs to abide by their rules to get back in, so I'm thinking he'll be careful to follow the rules.

joshua (Asheville NC)

Do you see Car drafting a Receiver the first two rounds?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Not necessarily. I mean, it's possible. But I think they have bigger needs. Also think they have hope LaFell will continue to emerge and Gettis will be back healthy, so the need might not be all that great.

Brian (Baton Rouge)

Pat, I am of the opinion that no NFL players will miss time this season due to the bounty scandal. It seems that the NFLPA is digging in on the issue and will challenge the league in court, tying the issue up for several years. There is a recent precedent for such a thing. Your thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:02 PM)

Think that's at least a possibility. This thing looks like it could drag on. I thought the suspensions would have been announced sometime in last few weeks. But, still no word. Of course, now that I said no word, we'll probably get an announcement.

Mort (Rural Hall, NC)

Later today will Cam be selecting the questions that he will answer during his chat, or will someone pick them for him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

I don't know how it works when players do the chats. When I do them, I don't have anyone picking questions for me. But Cam may rate higher than I do!

Jeff B (Far From Falconland)

Is the Blog Network mock draft only the first round?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Yep. But it will be interactive. You can chat with us and with each other while it's going on. Should go on for several hours.

Craig (Greensboro)

Pat have you heard anything about any moves the Panthers are trying to make in free agency lately and how is our cap number looking??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Don't think there will be any FA moves until after the dust from the draft settles. They're at about $5.2 million under cap right now and will be getting more cap room for Travelle Wharton after June 1.

Tim (Athens)

Pat, do you think the Bucs have a plan if Richardson goes to CLE and Claiborne goes to MIN? Thank you.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

I'm sure they do. Teams usually are prepared for any scenario. The thing I wonder about in that scenario is Justin Blackmon. I know they just signed Vincent Jackson and have a bunch of young WRs. But those young WRs haven't really established themselves. I could see them going with Blackmon to give Freeman another target.

Corey David (Hamlet,NC)

is dre kirkpatrick out of the equation for the panthers i think he would be a great impact player opposite gamble

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

Just my personal opinion, but I'm not sure I'd take him at No. 9. If they drop down a little, then I'd consider him.

Luke (Northdale)

Pat, in your opinion will millionaire pro athletes really buy into the "toes on the line" from the head coach?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Time will tell, but it's definitely very different out there these days.

Ben (Atlanta)

Do you know how high and upside the Panthers think Brandon Hogan has? If they think it is high, they may wait until rd 4 to get some CB depth.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

He should be fully healthy this year and they obviously like him. He could be a factor in what Panthers do (or don't do) at CB.

Konfuzed (Rock Hill, NC)

Give us your opinion on this years NFCS champs. Do you ever pick a team to win before the season starts? Just saving face, huh?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

We'll do that in late August or early September.

Doug (Tampa, FL)

Pat,Given the remarks that were made yesterday concerning Mark and Gregg working together in the draft room and looking at what Coach Schiano has done already with the team. Could you see the Bucs making blockbuster moves this year to acquire the players HE wants? Maybe trading up for Richardson and still keeping their 5th overall, Both Claiborne and Richardson WOW!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

Think that might be a little too much to expect.

Bucs fan Dan (Sacramento, CA)

I for one am looking forward to a new "look" Bucs , hopefully the playcalling will not be predictable this year, do you see more down field plays?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

I would expect so. Schiano keeps talking about running the ball and taking shots down the field.

Jeff (Decatur)

I know you're tired of Falcons fans belly aching about our inactive free agency. However, it's hard for me to stomach the idea that two new coordinators should fix us. Dropped passes and miss tackles have nothing to do with scheme. Don't you think it's unfair that (by appearences) BVG and Murlarkey are getting the blame for our uneven playoff showings? Where is Dimitroff being held accountable? Some guys (ie Decoud, Jerry, Baker) just don't pass the eye test and I don't think Koetter/Nolan can change that.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Your points are all valid. But Dimitroff and Smith have decided to play it this way and fans aren't going to change it. If it works, they'll look like genuises. If it doesn't, they'll take heat.

Christopher (Pickens, South Carolina)

Why do so many people think the Panthers need reciever help? We got Steve Smith who is still one of the best recievers in the game and Brandon Lafell was statistically one of the most dependable recievers in the NFC AND David Ghettis looked really good in his rookie year. add on to that our TE's, and Carolina actually has one of the best reciever corps in the NFL.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:15 PM)

I tend to agree with you. I could see them adding some depth, but I don't think they need to look for a starter in this draft.

David (Raleigh)

If the Panthers draft LB Luke Kuechly would he start at MLB and Beason move to the outside?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

That would be my guess.

Ben (Atlanta)

Pat have you heard anything else about reducing the preseason games and/or replacing them with more regular season games? Or has the concussion dialogue eliminated the talk of expanding regular season?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

No, the talk on that seems to have gone cold. I still think the league wants to go to 18 regular-season games at some point, but I don't think there is actively being talked about right now.

TYLER (ROCHESTER )

Carolina moving down and adding a 3rd pick I think would be huge. We can find a great DT in the middle/lower end of the first round and grab a CB in the top of the 2nd. Then with the 3rd maybe snag a decent WR or LB

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:18 PM)

I wouldn't be opposed to that. But not sure Panthers will really have good opportunity to trade down.

The Truth (Scapegoatsville)

Why does the media keep saying the Greg Williams tape is proof of a bounty when there is no mention of being paid for what he said to do?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

Let's wait for the NFL announcement on player discipline. I'm sure that will include lots of details. The announcement on discipline for the coaches and organization included lots of details. I think they'll have to have a very detailed account because it sure looks like union is ready to fight them.

Jon Beason (Charlotte)

Hey pat what about brockers we need help with the line and brockers would give me time to get to the qb plus im sure johnson and hardy would like to have him along

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Think he's a possibility, but Fletcher Cox and Dontari Poe also could be possibilities.

Ben (Atlanta)

Pat shouldnt the union also be weighing in for the players who were potentially targeted by the bounty? It seems to me they have a HUGE conflict of interest.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Yes, it's a very complicated issue. They have a duty to protect the Saints players, but they also have an obligation to protect the rest of the players.

Christopher (Pickens, South Carolina)

What do you make of Cam Newton's CAMpaign vid for the Madden 13 cover? Satiric humor ploy or arrogant publicity stunt?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

I really don't have an opinion on it either way. But I did think the video was entertaining.

Sasha (England)

do you think the panthers will make a play for assante samuel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

I doubt it, unless the price is really low and he's willing to restructure his contract.

Steve (Winston Salem)

Pat, am I the only one who believes that DT is not the biggest need for the Panthers D? LB is higher in my opinion.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

No, I'm with you. I've repeatedly said I'm not so sure Panthers go DT in the first round.

Sean (Vegas)

Saints fan. I don't understand the interim coach for the interim coach the Saints have planned. Any chance Parcells is still in the ix and he and Payton are talking strategy until June, when Parcells then steps in?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

I suppose anything is possible.

Da Biz (NorCali)

Any chance the Panthers can trade back to middle of 1st rd say to like Philly at 15 and pick up a few extra picks and still one the players they want?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

I wouldn't drop any lower than 15.

JM (Charlotte)

Pat, Hurney mentioned that they weren't locked into drafting a defensive guy in the first round. Is that classic Hurney posturing or do you believe him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Marty says what he needs to say in those pre-draft press conferences. He's made an art of not tipping his hand. I do think it's possible they take offensive player in first round, if the defensive guys they like aren't there. But defense is obviously their biggest need.

Jeff (McLean VA)

I like Luke Kuechly and think he will be a great player but the Panthers drafting him isn't a sound decision. Davis-Beason-Anderson will finally get a chance to gel. Drafting an OLB in the 2nd or 4th is a smarter plan.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

I hear you, but can you really count on Davis after three torn ACLs. I mean, I hope things work out for him, but I don't think you can count on him being the player he was before.

Will (California)

Do you think the Bucs will trade Blount at the Draft?? I see them taking Doug Martin in the 2nd rd!! I think he would become the instant starter in Tampa! Seeing he can do everything!! What are your thoughts??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

I think there's a chance you could see Martin and Blount as teammates this year. In this day and age, you need several RBs that can play.

Joe F, Vero Beach FL [via mobile]

If Minnisoda picks Claybourne and Cleveland takes Richardson. What's Tampa's back-up plan? Move down and take a LB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Possibly could move down. But, in that scenario, I think they'd have to at least consider Blackmon or Kalil.

Rick (New jersey)

What is a Bigger NEED for the SAINTS D line or CB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

I think D-line. They need to improve pass rush.

Shane (Athens)

Pat, i think the falcons fixed the main things that were wrong from last year. They got two coordinators that are much more aggressive than van gorder or mularkey ever were. Koetter is gonna utilize julio much more and Nolan won't be content to play a soft cover 2 all day against the saints.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

I tend to agree with you, but we'll find out when they get on the field in September.

Ted (NO)

Drew Brees should not be present in any discussions regarding the Saints bounty issue with the NFLPA vs the NFL. Blatant conflict of interest. I am very surprised a bigger stink was not made by the media, but i guess Brees is always above criticism.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Interesting observation.

Will (California)

I see your point!! They seem to be wanting to the the ball 30 plus times a game!! I Just think Martin would win the starting job unless Blount finds the fire from his rookie year!! Or learns to block and catch!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

I think there is room for both of them. Heck, they probably still need to add one more running back beyond that.

Ben (Atlanta)

To follow up on Ted's point about Brees, which I absolutely agree with, Fujita should not have been present either.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

I can understand that thinking.

Harry (Charlotte)

Do you agree that Brees should not be involved? Why don't you offer your opinion? You are never shy to do that with other QBs...

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:37 PM)

Honestly, hadn't given it much thought until the question was brought up here.

Christopher (Pickens, South Carolina)

@Sean from Vegas: I personally agree with Skip Bayless on why Parcells decided not to coach the saints. I don't think Goodell would like the Saints undermining their punishment by hiring a HOF coach for a year while their future HOF coach is suspended.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Goodell said publicly Tom Benson could hire anyone he wanted.

CJ (Winston Salem)

I heard Marty Hurney talking about a WR they signed named Chris Manno who was a friend of Cam Newton and had been working out with him. How much do you know about him and does he have potential?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Sorry, don't really know much on him.

Joe F (Vero Beach) [via mobile]

I'm surprised the Bucs didn't follow through with shopping Talib. You know some dumb team would give them something for him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

I don't think anyone would give up anything for him right now. If he goes through trial and is cleared and isn't going to be suspended by the NFL, then, he has some trade value.

Christopher (Pickens, South Carolina)

Publicly, shmubicly, who knows what goes on behind closed doors in the NFL.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

True.

Cam Newton (Charlotte)

do i have your vote for madden 13

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

Yep, already voted for you. Even before I saw your video.

Saleem (Saint Louis)

What are your thoughts on the league taking so long to hand out suspensions to the Saints. I understand legal implications and the need for doing their due diligence but they announced Sean Payton's suspension over a month ago now. In addition to roster impact, the suspensions have salary cap implications and could be part of why Loomis hasn't pulled the trigger on Brees' contract. Your thoughts?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Yes, I'm totally surprised nothing has come yet. I thought it would have happened sometime in the last few weeks, but it seems to be dragging. On the salary-cap implications, unless they do it differently than in the past, the suspended players would still count against the cap right up until the moment they start their suspensions.

Nate M (Palmer, AK)

Long time not talk Pat! Bucs Barber to the Safety Position intrigues me, makes me think we're going after a CB with our first pick. What do you think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Think there's a good chance they go CB no matter if Barber is at safety or not. But we definitely could see him playing some safety under any scenario. He doesn't have prototype safety size, but he's smart, very experienced and I think he can at least be a situational player at safety.

Charles (Winston Salem)

If you could only pick one player in this years draft for the Panthers who would you pick and why. Thank you

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

I could say some guys that definitely won't be there when they pick. But I'll go with guys that have a chance to be there. If Fletcher Cox is there, that's my answer. If he's not, then I'll say Luke Kuechly.

Alex F (Belgium (formerly NOLA))

We hear plenty of debate about whether Tom Brady or Peyton Manning is the best QB ever. What does Drew Brees have to do to get in the conversation (besides continuing to break every QB record around)?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Excellent question. I guess just keep putting up huge numbers and winning lots of games.

Angelo (Anaheim)

Pat the bucs should trade blount for a pick draft a RB, sign benson or ryan grant after the draft cause theyre going to be cheap and then sign a undrafted RB

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Why do people seem to think Blount has so much trade value? When he was coming out in the draft, 32 teams, including the Bucs, passed him over. There were questions about him then that didn't have anything to do with his fight in college. I think some of those questions still remain about him all around the league.

Captain Fear (KY)

If Kalil slips to the Bucs at 5th pick - what teams would be likely trade partners? Would it be a bad idea to take Kalil for LT (swing Penn right) and make the O-Line just dominant for Schiano's running game?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

I think they'd have to strongly consider Kalil if he is there. They could start him off on right side and he'd be an uprgade over Trueblood and switch him and Penn in a few years. Or switch them now. You don't get many chances to get a dominant LT. If they did somehow end up with Kalil, they potentially could have had one of NFL's best o-lines.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, Ga)

Hey Pat, any updates on the falcons on Hard Knocks?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

No, think we'll get word in May. But I'm thinking it's going to happen.

David (Raleigh)

Of the top three needs for the Panthers DT, CB, and LB what would you say is the biggest need of the 3.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:53 PM)

I'm inclined to put CB and LB ahead of DT. I mean, Edwards is coming back, they've got two DTs that they drafted in the third round last year and they stumbled upon a couple of other DTs with upside when they had all those injuries last year.

Angelo (Anaheim)

Excellent point Pat... I just dont see how Blount and Schiano can co-exist he was one of the first players he came out and spoke about... Could you see the bucs releasing him?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Not necessarily. I think he could have a role with them this season. There obviously is some talent there. But Schiano may be trying to light a fire under him.

Mort (Rural Hall, NC)

So, we all know that Kuechly will be the guy if the Panthers pick a LB at #9. Who would they pick at corner.... Gilmore?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Not ruling that one out. I've gotten the impression they may like Gilmore more than Kirkpatrick. All right, couple more questions before we sign off.

Doug (Greensboro)

Hi Pat. Really enjoy your blog - I read it every day. What's the latest with Jeremy Shockey? ... any indication if he'll stay in Charlotte another year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Think it's still a possibility at least. But Shockey is one of those guys that probably will sit there until after the draft. Teams will see where they stand at TE after the draft and there could be some new landing spots for him. Or some existing landing spots could be gone.

Capt-ATL (Atlanta)

Brees current TAG number is 14.4 million, but is to be reset closer to 16M. When does this happen, and will it put the Saints over the CAP and force them to waive or restructure someone. Is QB the only position that will reset?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:59 PM)

I believe today is the day that he starts counting at $16 million. They'll either have to restructure some deals or release some guy.

Bert (Raleigh)

Pat are we going to see you next week after the 1st round or is the draft going to cancel the chat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

I'm not sure on that. I'm guessing we probably won't have the chat next Friday afternoon because we'll be chatting live throughout the draft. And we'll be chatting Monday at 1 p.m. in the Blog Network Mock Draft. Stay tuned to the blog for more details on that very soon. Thanks to all for stopping by.
