Happy Friday!! And welcome to my first chat of the spring...it's a little crazy how many injuries there are already...and we're only 2 weeks into baseball...so there's plenty to talk about.
Your opinion of the C.Young injury and will this be the 2-3 weeks timetable or longer? Thanks alot
Hi David:It's hard to say whether he will be forced to stay out longer yet because it all depends how his rehab progresses. It sounds as if the ligament damage was not extensive but he still was unable to lift his arm initially. We'll see how quickly he heals. My guess is he'll do pretty well, just considering he's never been forced on the DL until now...
What's the latest with Berkman? Thanks!
Matt: Berkman is expected to go on the DL before today's game. He aggravated the calf this week in a game (original injury was over a week ago) and knows he needs to completely back off to let it fully heal. He had a similar injury in 2009 - also came back too quickly, then missed 3 weeks, so why not get it right now before getting deep into the season. Plus, at 36 (I think), it's a little slower to get these to heal.
Hey Stephania :) What's the deal with Brian Roberts? Is he ever going to play? Keep up all the great work Miss Bad news.
Hi Quincy's nephew: I hear that Roberts is traveling with the team. Doesn't mean he's playing imminently but every increase in overall activity is an encouraging sign. I'm still hoping we'll see him in the not too distant future but we know with these injuries we can't lock in a return date.
Carl Crawford, nearing a return??
Hey Rich: Glad to see you're multitasking too...Crawford is playing in extended spring training so that's a bump up from hitting at the facility. The hope is if all goes well, the progression will be smooth bakc towards the regular lineup. Imagine it's at least another week, maybe longer - but no one is offering specifics.
Stanton says he feels fine? Do you think it a minor issue that will nag him all year?
Fred: I worry that it could - but since we don't have any specific structure to blame, it's hard to know how much to worry. I think there's the chance it flares up from time to time and then they'll be forced to rest him but outside of that, he should perform as expected.
What's the scoop on the Brett Gardner injury? Sounds like he didn't do himself any favors by trying to swing a bat shortly after he hurt himself. How much is that going to affect his recovery time and is this the sort of injury where he will be able to return when he is eligible?
Micah: Gardner had a weird one. Awkward slide, bent his wrist underneath him and ended up with a bone bruise in his elbow and straining an extensor muscle in his forearm. it's not his throwing arm but it can affect his fielding and certainly can affect his swing when he gets toward full extension. Unclear whether it will be more than the 2 weeks, but he definitely needs the 2 weeks.
when do you expect salvador perez back? I heard 12-14 weeks but 8 weeks seems more typical for a meniscus injury
Like the name - fear the beard - we're thinking good thoughts for Wilson as he faces a looooong recovery. As far as Perez, hiss injury is complicated by the fact that he's a catcher too. Tougher to come back from. The timetable seems about right.
Does Morneau appear healthy to you?
Brian: With all the bombs he's hitting it sure looks that way. Interesting b/c only he really knows how he feels. But he was pretty clear this spring that he felt different this year than last, much more focused on swing and timing than how he felt...a really good sign. Let's hope it is truly behind him
Wilson is having his 2nd TJ surgery, is he even worth holding onto in a dynasty league?
Ryan: As much as I'm rooting for him, I wouldn't. There is a huge road for him to go down before returning and the outcomes by and large after second surgery aren't great. He certainly COULD come back and do well but I wouldn't hold a spot for him.
Stephania, what are your thoughts on Brad Lidge's vertigo announcement?
Hi Brandon: I think the article in yesterday's Post on him was interesting. Explains Lidge has had episodes of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). Related to the inner ear, can be very disabling but also very treatable with proper therapy. The good news is he seems to have gotten it (since he said exercises helped it to go away). These conditions aren't selective. Anyone can be affected - from regular human to athlete.
What does Ryan Howard expect/hope to hear from a "specialist" that he wouldn't already know from previous medical support? I always find it strange when I see such reports well into the healing process....can you expand on this?
Todd: Appparently he's been seeing a wound specialist - someone who deals regulary with wounds, which truly is a specialty - since that is the area where the issue at this moment is. Howard can't incresae his activity until they're sure the wound has fully healed (remember, he had to have a procedure to clean out infection and then that wound needs to heal). Sounds like they're hoping for some news today.
Do you see Justin Upton needing a DL stint?
John: They're hoping to aovid it. And using him the way they did the other night suggests they think they can avoid it. He had fluid drained and the idea was to give it a few days and see how he responded. There's always the chance that it doesn't do what they had hoped and turns into a DL situation, but for now, they're hoping it will take a turn for the better.
whats the latest on chris carpenter? should i take the lack of info from St. Louis as a bad sign?
Carl: Having fun at Fenway today? Big celebrations...as far as Carpenter, he still isn't strong enough to throw. As you know from a thrower in another sport, when it comes to the heaing of nerve tissue, it proceeds at its own pace, which is generally slowly. Given that he's not ready to throw from mound - nor does he sound particularly close to doing so - it's impossible to issue any sort of return timetable.
I am in a H2H league, do you think V-Mart is worth the pick up for the playoff push?
Chris: I wouldn't - still think there are big hurdles to climb before he's truly "back." Remember when Beltran came back from a cartilage procedure? It took some time. I'm hopeful for him but not super confident.
Plan to see the 49ers @New England in December?
How's Kyle Farnsworth doing these days? Will he be back and effective in the original 4-6 week timetable?
Danny: Hard to know b/c he's really been shut down from throwing. So there's not a ton to report right now. Hopefully in a couple of weeks.
Related question....how about Storen?
Tom: Not much news on Storen, mostly b/c it's so soon post-surgery that he's doing the basic rehab now. We don't usually get much of an update until they get closer to doing baseball type activities. Right now there's no reason to think it will be delayed, but until we see him pick up a baseball, hard to project.
Will we see Michael Morse any time soon?
Ben: I don't think so. When you have an injury like that, then there's a big setback, you have to go slower out of the gate the next time. We know he had a PRP injection, so the activity is pretty quiet early on after that. Don't think you'll hear much of anything for another couple weeks.
What's your take on Utley? Amaro just keeps say "he's getting stronger," but I'm not sure he even knows what's going on. When do you expect him back, if you had to guess?
Jim: honestly? I don't even guess anymore when it comes to him. There is so little info and there really is no certainty whatsoever given that he has a condition which will essentially be "managed' going forward, not cured. Again, he's a guy where I hope that he can make a successful return but I just don't put any weight into a predictive timetable. Keep in mind, the other aspect is even after he comes back (presuming he does), we have no idea how he'll hold up. Last year, he did. Not a lock for this year.
Any word on Allen Craig? Seems like now would be a good time for STL to get him back....
Alex: looks like it might not be terribly far off. Sounds like he could be headed for rehab assignment within the next week or so.
When Jacoby Ellsbury comes back from his DL stint do you think his shoulder injury will decrease his home run power substantially? And do you think he'll need surgery in the off season or even this season? Does an injury like that heal on its own?
Kevin: Really depends what the extent of soft tissue injury was. If he has any labral damage, even a small tear, it won't heal on its own. But it also doesn't mean he can't play well in the presence of some damage - some guys do. The fli side is there are other injuries which really prevent a guy from playing in his normal fashion. Talked a little more about this in my blog but, yes, a lot of scenarios, including decresae power and a decision to do something later surgically may exist.
What's the word on Nolan Reimold's neck spasms? He's so hot right now, please say it's not a big deal...
Rich: Hard to read. Think the team is hoping it's a day-to-day thing now and nothing worse.
Drew back before Memorial Day?
Jeff: Hard to know. Hasn't been able to progress game-wise b/c of apparent stiffness between innings. He's doing well with specific activitieds but obviously this is an issue. Timetable not set.
Doug Fister? What happened with his new injury the other day? When can we expect him back and what kind of lingering affects will there be? (Should we drop him?)
Still think he's on that 34.5 day range. A minor setback but may not have been ready to throw as he did. They'll wait a little longer.
OK gang - time for me to go. Thanks for visiting the chat room today. GREAT questions as always. See you same time, next week - right in the middle of the NFL Draft!!
