Hey guys... we'll get rolling in a sec.
Do u think oklahoma and osu will explore going to the pac 12?
Gosh I hope not. Would ruin my summer for the third consecutive year.
Who will be the first Sooner to be selected in the 2012 NFL Draft?
Ronnell Lewis... probably an early second round pick. Jamell Fleming could also go in the second round.
I'm trying not to panic about ou yet to land any commitments from any linebackers or corners..which position more of a priority? And who do we have realistic chances of signing?
Panic in Jan. Don't panic now. Mike Stoops said signing 5 "quality" DBs was the priority in this class. Bob had a breakdown of who the Sooners are targeting in his weekly Intel.
Who is going to be the next RG3 in the Big 12?
I don't know that we'll ever see another RGIII. You're talking about an Olympic-caliber sprinter molded into a QB. That doesn't come around very often.
Im the greatest coach ever and know talent when i see it. I have offered Brayden Scott and want him. Why hasnt OU offered him if i have.
I don't know if this is the only reason, but OU traditionally slow plays recruit from Oklahoma. I'm not crazy about the philosophy, but Ryan Broyles, Curtis Lofton, the list goes on of guys that OU waited to pursue.
I personally think 13' QB Cody Thomas is just every bit as good as Max Browne, but what do the Sooners have to do to land his talents and get him away from baseball?
I don't know where Thomas will end up, but if he ends up going anywhere near where Archie Bradley did, there's really nothing OU can do... Money talks.
is mike stoops running a new scheme or is he using same system just a little more vanilla? thanks
The scheme will be similar, but "vanilla" is probably the wrong word. He has and will continue to simplify schemes in the secondary to help them play and react instead of think.
Did that slow playing hurt them with Josh Turner, DeMarco Cobbs, and now Justin Manning?
Maybe more with Turner than Cobbs if I remember correctly... Honestly, it hasn't really hurt them as much as you would think. They know Oklahoma kids want to play for OU, and they've been able to swoop in late in get the Ryan Broyleses of the world.
Why is ou not going after the top d end prospect nmchekachekasomething...do we think its unrealistic landing him or did he tell us we didn't have a shot or what??
Robert Nkemdiche? They probably realized early on landing him was a longshot, considering his offer sheet of schools a lot closer in proximity.
Jake,There has been a lot of talk about Mike Stoops return to OU, but do you think he'll be able to restore the the dominating defense that once he commanded. Let's not forget that the Big XII didn't have so many high octane offenses ten years ago.
I don't think it will happen overnight and I don't think it will be like it was in 2001 when OU was shutting every other team out. But I really like what Mike has done with the secondary so far, and I would expect them to be improved at the back end, for sure.
Will the 2013 defensive back class rival/end up as impressive, as the WR class of 2012?
The odds are against it.
with the bo ryan situation last week, i saw we allowed Justin mcckay to go to kansas and brandon williams to texas a & m, is that a common deal with coaches blocking certain teams?
I'm not so sure OU would have allowed Brandon Williams to transfer to Texas A&M if the Aggies had remained in the Big 12... McCay's case was different -- he was never going to play at OU. But it's fairly common to block players from transferring to another program in the same conference. Maybe they should have the same rule for coaches?
I don't understand the negative talk about Corey Nelson. Doesn't he have too much talent not to start or at least play a lot? What do you think will happen with him this fall.
I agree. He has too much talent not to play a major role on the defense. He went through some growing pains adapting to the new regime on defense... but he turned a corner the final week of spring ball and played really well in the Red-White game. He led the D with 8 tackles, a positive sign for the fall.
There has been a lot of talk about WVU having the best offense in the Big12. I have a problem with that. They have never played in the Big12. And OU returns a lot of production from the 5th best overall offense in the country. What do you say about this?
We're about to find out... I like West Virginia's offense a lot. You don't drop off 70 in the Orange Bowl unless you can play, and WV figures only to improve in its second year in Dana's scheme. Based on how OU staggered to the finish last season without Broyles, I don't see anything wrong with ranking WV's offense ahead of OU's in the preseason.
Jake, with the backs on the roster and the commits for 2014, forgot all bout Alex Ross. You think he gets lost on the depth chart or is he looked at for a position change?
No, not at all. In fact, I think he could be a star at OU. He only played RB two years in high school, which means he hasn't completely tapped into that potential yet. If Ross can stay healthy, he could be really special.
Looking at the schedule, what games worry you the most? % chance that OU can run the table and play for a NC?
OU's two toughest games will be at West Virginia followed by at TCU.
how much longer is bob stoops going to stay??? who will get the more time as a freshman playing this upcoming season???
Probably until he retires from coaching... Trey Metoyer will play more than any other freshman. He should be a starter from day one.
Will Bob be handling Gardner's issue once he is on campus or has he already discussed it with Gardner?
I'm sure it's been discussed. I don't see this being a big deal... maybe a few stadium steps.
can you list the top 5 DE 1 through 5 ??
At OU? Washington and King tied for first, Chuka, then Chaz Nelson, and Grissom.
Do you think need and potential early playing time will help sway Maurice Smith to Norman and away from Bama? Or do the Sooners need to have a big season as well to help their cause?
Maurice Smith now says he likes Alabama the most, so it looks like his top two are Bama and Texas. But Smith appears to enjoy every visit "the most." He grew up a Texas fan though and the smart money is with the Longhorns.
Where do we stand with conerback maurice smith? Last I heard he almost committed during ou's junior day..I was expecting a commitment from him with the following weeks.
OU is in the mix, but Texas is probably the favorite.
Any Oklahoma recruits going to commit anytime soon???
Any football commits coming in near future?
What is the big hurry?
What does the rb situation look like?
Dominique Whaley is the starter if he's healthy. Roy Finch and Brennan Clay will get spot carries. Damien Williams is the X factor, and could warrant a lot of playing time if he's good as his highlight tape. We'll see.
Jake, Sooner magic is gone. I'm blaming Stoops' recruiting for so many Florida and California kids. Not dissing them, but they're just "not from around here". I see AMAZING talent on the team, yet we stink it up a couple games per year. Is there cultural friction or what?
No cultural friction, but ask the 2000 national championship team if there's anything to be said for recruiting as many Oklahoma kids as possible.
Do you think after a few years in the NFL, Broyles will end up being a steal for which ever team drafts him? I see him being a Welker of sorts.
Toby Rowland and I were talking about the very same thing on his show this morning... One thing to keep in mind, it took 3-4 years before Welker came into his own. Remember, he was with San Diego a year or two, then Miami before catching on with the Pats. Broyles made need some time to adjust to the physicality of the NFL. But the kid is a player.
Any chance that Ty Darlington sees time this fall? Being from Apopka, near Orlando, we were able to follow him. Great kid with a passion for Sooner football.
No, I doubt he plays this year. The Sooners already have so many players guard to guard (Ikard, Evans, Habern, Shead Nila, Irwin). But James Patton is really high on Darlington and he has a great chance to be a foundational piece of the next o-line era.
Any thoughts on the selections the Rams or Vikings should make to help OU legends AD and Sam?
The Rams should take Justin Blackmon. Sam desperately needs a No. 1 WR, and there's no OT that will be available and worth taking at No. 6. The Vikings need help everywhere. The defense is old, the O-line has struggled. But in the NFC North with Rodgers, Stafford, Cutler, I would go with a CB... so Claiborne.
Not thinkin we have much of a shot with levenberry, but there's little hope since he mentioned us as a finalist..Who could possibly be the first linebaker to commit? And what are some names to key an eye on that we have a a realistic chance of signing?
Levenberry is likely going to Florida State when he announces tomorrow afternoon.
Jake,is Oklahoma going to keep going with Bell on the goal line this year or do you see him being involved in more of the offense or is this going to be Landry Jones's team?
No, this is Landry's team. The Belldozer will continue to be a big part of the short-yardage offense, but you won't see Bell on the field otherwise.
Who will have the better defense. OSU or OU.
When was the last time OSU had the better defense? 1997? OU will have the better D again next season.
Let's face it, Landry is only back to hang with his fiance. I'm not the only Sooner that's bent that Bell isn't taking over. Yes, Landry is an awesome passer but when he's off, there ain't no mojo there. Bell on the other hand has got it all. Great arm and amazing runner. Does Good Landry finish the season as starter (no, not wishing an injury on him)? Or does Bell snag the spot after Bad Landry drops a game or two? His Bedlam performance was the worst QB performance I've ever seen.
I was wondering when the Landry haters were going to pop up... Landry is not losing his job. Give it another year... Bell will be in the lineup soon enough.
Jake, who's the best uncommited player in the current espn 150, that ou has the best chance of landing?
It's probably still DT Justin Manning, DeMarcus Granger's younger brother.
Do you see stanvon taylor ever getting a OU offer? Seems like a solid player.
Taylor will be evaluated by the OU coaches this spring. It's hard to say right now if he'll get an offer, but he's one of three in-state defensive backs OU is looking at along with Lawton's Maurice Chandler and Edmond Santa Fe's Khari Harding.
Any word on Joe Mathis and Torredney Prevot? Where do the Sooners currently stand with these top prospects?
Mathis is high on OU, but will he take a visit? That's the question. Prevot has OU on the outside looking in. It's a longshot. Texas is the favorite.
Haha...Jake, will the Landry haters evoke the blasphemous name of Nate Hybl if he does not step up his game ths year, and eliminate the mistakes?
Please, they were doing that during his freshman year when he had no reps with the first-team offense in the offseason, wasn't expecting to play, the o-line was terrible and the WRs dropped everything.
My large group of Sooner Fans in Wichita loves Landry, just saying.
Wow, amazing how the soon to be all-time leading passer at OU can be so polarizing. Bedlam isn't just on Landry's shoulders. Lots of poor play to go around in that game. Plus, putting up 38 against Baylor should have been enough.
What is your personal tailgating beverage of choice?
I haven't imbibed at a tailgate since college. Such is life of a beat writer.
Is it more likely that Lamar earns the starting spot at CB and Colvin stay at S. Or Colvin going to CB and we hope Javon doesn't get burnt deep.
It's more likely that Colvin moves to CB. In Javon we trust.
JTrott, I know our D is going to be awesome, but what's up with all the personnel changes? You would almost think we're playing sandlot football with all the changes. Is Bobby having to make due with less than usual. Speak it bro!
New regime brings new changes.
Can you say "weak secondary"? What % chance do you think your Sooners have in Morgantown this year? Or do you think this one's "in the bag" for Stoops?
This year, I'm going to my wife's family reunion, which is partly comprised of rabid West Virginia fans. Wish me luck with these people.
Washita Wheat, you should try it when you get chance. It's a solid brew..and.."Made with REAL Oklahoma Red Wheat!".
Can you smuggle me some up to the press box?
i havent heard anything about kass everett recently. how has he done in spring ball? is there any chance of him playing?
The only way Kass is playing is if there are injuries. He's buried on the depth chart for the foreseeable future.
Jake,RG3 was saying on the "Gruden QB Camp" that in their high speed offense that they were trying to get the defense out of position and he said that some teams switch players in and out because of their depth.Do you see Stoops learning from this and not substitute so much against fast paced offensive teams?
Mike Stoops is already making this adjustment. Not having more guys ready to play is something that's killed OU in the past. I think Mike will have enough guys ready to play in the secondary this time around for the reasons RGIII disclosed.
Many experts are handing 1st Team QB to Big XII newcomer Geno Smith. Does Landry Jones redeem himself this season and put the conference rookie in his place?
Not if OU doesn't beat West Virginia on the road. That's going to be a tough one.
True indeed, some Sooner fans are beginning to resemble the Longhorn faitful with Chris Simms? Now that's the definition of a disappointment of shrinking on the big state. We should be thankful for Landry.
Who would you rather have? Landry Jones or David Ash?
Travis Lewis was our best LB for 4 years. Then, he skips out on a few interviews and the local media turns on him. Is it safe to say OU beat writers took that a little too personal and have been less than kind to him this past year?
He was hardly the first player to skip out on interviews. Jermaine Gresham was famous for that. The difference was, Gresham was an all-conference tight end. Lewis was a very average LB this past season. I don't take things like that personal, and I hope my colleagues wouldn't either. Then again, somebody like Lewis has no one to blame but himself when he has no one getting his back in the media.
how many games does world peace get?
Ban him for life.
of the crop of sooners entering the nfl draft, who has the most impact as a rookie?
Probably Jamell. Ronnell still needs some fine-tuning.
Great job on the chat Jake. Take the rest of the day off! Call me sometime and I'll buy you a beer.
That would be a first, Bob.
Good question? Who IS going to line-up in the secondary and will they be at least decent this season?
The DBs will be the strength of the defense. Colvin and Hurst are all-conference caliber CBs. Jefferson is a star at safety. The question is Javon Harris at the other safety, and Lynn and Ibiloye underneath at nickel/dime back.
Pass rush - Will we lead the conference in pass rushing this year? Will we get through the best OL's (OSU, WVU, Horns)?
I haven't analyzed what everyone else has coming back in the front four, but I doubt OU has the best pass rush. Big Frank and Ronnell are leaving a big void at end, and there's no difference-maker at DT.
The only Texas QB I would ever have taken over recent OU starters is Vince Young. He's the only one justifiable in my opinion.
Colt McCoy was a terrific player, too. I know he and Sam overlapped some, but let's not act like Texas has started a bunch of bums there.
If Damen Williams is as good as his film. Who is the starting RB for OU Whaley or Williams?
Still Whaley... He's proven it at the D-1 level.
"Lewis was a very average LB this past season." Dude played on a broken toe. OU loses to FSU without him, I think. "Then again, somebody like Lewis has no one to blame but himself when he has no one getting his back in the media." This answers my question.
No, I agree. The toe was a big problem. The reason he was average.
RJ Washington was so highly ranked coming out of high school. What's your take on him filling in for Frank Alexander?
I could see RJ having a breakout season the way Frank and Pryce Macon had the last two years. He's not winning Big 12 D player of the year, but I could see him being a very solid player his final season.
Guys, that's it for the chat this week. Sorry I couldn't get to all of your questions. We'll do it again next week, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
