Welcome to another Terrific Tuesday. Did you enjoy the Kansas race? Is Dale Jr. getting closer to a win? Did you see the mock Chase and schedule myself and a couple of writers came up with on a napkin? Fire away.
Newt: How good of a save did Greg Biffle have when Kyle touched him in the left rear on Sunday?
Pretty nice. Not as nice as the two saves Kyle Busch had at Daytona earlier this year, but Biffle is better than most give him credit for. He does have a Nationwide and Truck title, you know.
Newt: Can you believe it's snowing at Pocono Raceway this late in April for the tire test?
I believe anything the way weather has been lately.
Who was the Crew Chief on the 12 this past weekend ?
Good question. I don't have it on the tip of my tongue. Go back and check the entry list on Jayski and see if it's listed there.
Does Samantha need to become more like Delana and free Kyle up so he.can put more focus on Cup racing than on running a truck/NW operation? Thanks.
Do you think Kurt Bush will land with ah big team next year ?
Starting to wonder. Odds are he will. The 20 could be open, or JGR could go to four teams and add Kurt. Those appear to be his best options. RCR also might go back to four cars.
Another race that Logano doesn't end on the lead lap. He's sinking quickly.
Only 14 drivers finished on the lead lap, so 16th with an ill handling car isn't that bad. He moved up a spot in points as well.
Is Kurt still having fun?
Haven't had the time to ask lately.
During the Texas and Kansas races, the higher than usual average race speeds were mentioned during the telecasts. Are lapped cars and/or cars in the garage counted toward the average race speed?
Believe the average goes on the average of the leader of each lap. And the reason the averages are up are because there are more laps being run under green. Laps under caution do count toward the average.
So David, the way I understand it is for next year: Ford has Penske, Roush, prob RPM. Chevy: HMS, SHR, RCR and prob EGR. Toyota with MWR, JGR. Where does that leave Dodge? Also, know that NAPA had talked of re-signing, you know if they've talked to anyone else?
Furniture Row? Turner Motorsports? Those are the options now. And MWR is in the process of re-signing NAPA and Truex Jr. Here's what I wrote on Saturday. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/7839677/michael-waltrip-racing-talking-extension-martin-truex-jr-sponsor
What is wrong with Smoke the past few races since Fontana? Or is he saving it for the summer run and in the Chase like he did last year?
He's won two of the four races on intermediate tracks. He was 13th on Sunday. It's tough -- no impossible -- to be on top of your game every week. That's what made his 5 wins in the Chase even more amazing. And Smoke doesn't save anything.
With Danica, Crash Wallace, and Pastrana racing this Friday night, I am very excited for the race on Friday night at Richmond. Short track, baby!
Yes, there should be more wrecks than we've had the past fewe weeks. Not picking on the ones you mentioned, either.
Who are your top 5 this Saturday? Darkhorse? Sleeper?
I'll start with the darkhorse. Told Logano I'd have to stop picking him if he didn't step it up to make me look good, so I won't. Top 5 -- Hamlin, Keselowski, Earnhardt, Kyle Busch and Stewart. Darhorse -- Ambrose. Sleeper -- Reutimann.
Mr. Newton! With JGR re-upping with Toyota and RPM wishing to stay aligned with Roush, what if EGR decides to stay with Chevy--what would Dodge do? Go for the mid-level team plan (Furniture Row, JTG, etc.)? Start their own team, a la Ray Evernham? Or simply bow out?
Ray's not interested. Trust me. It'll be a mix of small teams the way I see it.
With RPM running the STP colors last week, what classic paint scheme would you like to see make a one-race return? (For what its worth, I'd love to see the old Mello Yello colors of Kyle Petty & Cole Trickle come back for a single race)
Good pick. I'll go with the Coca-Cola machine Bobby Allison drove in the day. Love it.
Jr was 3rd in points going into the Richmond race last season. Why is everyone saying he is better when he is 4th in points this year?
He's led more laps and his team has a year under its belt.
So what is with Kyle Busch? he seems to be off according to his standards. He usually doesn't do this bad until the chase.
The cars just haven't been right. They are playing with the aero package that has moved MWR up, but it usually takes a few months to get that end all worked out. But you're right, you'd expect him to lead a lot more laps than he has. That's the most alarming part. He's not even contending to lead laps.
When can we expect to start hearing rumors for drivers and race teams for the 2013 season? As a Kurt Busch fan I'm curious as to what his plans are for the 2013 season.
I suspect there already are some talks going on, but with sponsors more reluctant to step forward you might see deals happen later this year than the past few.
Hi David - who would you said are the most liked or popular drivers amongst their peers? Who does the press like working with the most as well? Thanks!
Dale Jr not only is popular with fans, but with his peers and media as well. He's really a likeable guy who has deep insight. Johnson is more popular than you might think. Really hard to give you just one or two.
hey newt, saturday will be my first time going to richmond. six of us going and we like six different drivers (24,18,5,14,88,48). Who is going to have bragging rights and who is in trouble? thanks
Sure this isn't a trick fantasy question? Honestly, any of those could win. The way Kahne's season has gone I'd rule him out. Kyle has struggled so I'd nix that. .. Gordon seems snakebit, too. That leaves Smoke, Junior and Johnson. Got a gut feeling Junior might win. Too bad nobody is an 11 fan. He's the guy to beat.
are you concerned yet with the 24 season? And do you think he still makes the chase?
Way too early for concern. I still suspect he'll win a couple of races and at least make the Chase with the wild card.
first time going to richmond, anything to look for and how do you like covering this track?
Love covering races here. Tight confines and good racing. Make sure you go downtown to the restaurant-bar area around the Tobacco company. Fun times and great food there. Enjoy.
Have you heard anything concerning the dodge camp? Latest I have heard still has Ganassi going to Dodge.
You've heard more than me. Ganassi folks telling me they are staying with Chevy.
Who is the number 1 driver at Gibbs- Hamlin, Busch, or for argument's sake, Logano?
Tough one. Most consider Busch the more talented driver, but Hamlin has had more success in the Chase and he's catching Busch in wins. Hamlin's definitely King of the Hill right now, but a few wins would put Kyle right back on top.
With Kansas still close to selling out even though they have a second date, can Writers remove their bias from a track saying Kansas only got a second date for the casino.
First, it wasn't that close to selling out on Sunday. And if it weren't for the casino and the France name attached to it the second date wouldn't have happened.
Newt! Thanks for your time! These 1.5 mile tracks kill me! Are there any cities building *unique* tracks (or have plans to) that can replace some of these boring (and repetitive) races??
Are you on Twitter? If so, go back and check out my posts from Saturday-Monday. Nate Ryan of USA Today, David Caraviello from NASCAR.com and I came up with our own schedule on a blank bar napkin. We cut the 1.5 mile tracks from 5 to 3 in the Chase and eliminated a few in the regular season as well. And thanks for your time.
Do you ever skip questions, or do you just go down the list? We seem to have a lot of repeat questions.
Mostly go down the list. Skip a lot the last 10 minutes to get people who came in late.
newt going to my first poconos race in June any suggestions on where the best viewing area in the stands would be to sit & is this the week the #18 team finally breaks into the win column?..
You'll enjoy Pocono. Not sure the best place to watch from the stands since I always sit in the infield. I'd be better suited to give you restaurant recommendations. Thre's a place near there that cooks steak on a stone that I like, and you might see a few drivers there.
Love the chats. I must say though sometimes the Rowdy questions become too much. It is as if one person has an obsession with the man.
It happens. Thanks.
Hey David - love these chats, thank you. Agree or disagree - having so many similar tracks really gears towards specific teams and drivers. I truly don't feel the best driver wins these races - it's more their setup. It would be great to get more diversity on the schedule and then I'd feel the champion really is the most talented driver! (Disclaimer - ALL these drivers are incredibly talented so I'm not saying the winners on these tracks are sub par).
Agreed on more diversity. That's why in the napkin Chase myself and a few friends came up with had: Daytona, Bristol, Montreal, Kansas, TAlladega, Martinsville, Darlington, Phoenix, Charlotte and Homestead. Only 3 1.5 mile tracks. A road course. Yeah
I was looking at photo's from the WH visit by the chase drivers. Was wondering if the woman Dale Jr was with was the same one as at the chase Banquet in Vegas. If so you should tell her to stay Brunette.
I didn't pay that close attention, but I would imagine she was. He's only dating the one.
I heard Pattie Petty was fired from Adam Petty Victory Junction Camp. Sad to see. Do you know the reasoning for the firing?
Yep. It is sad.
Wow I did not know that if Hamlin gets another win in his next 12 starts he will get to 20 wins faster then Dale Earnhardt. That is Impressive. and he could do it this week and it will be faster the Cale Yarborough. He's underrated
Not sure how he's underrated. He almost won the title two years ago. Should, in fact.
Who ya got at Richmond?
Don't you think Chevy is hurting itself by being the last to show their new car? It seems to me the hype is dying, as Dodge and Ford have shown theirs.
Nope. And to be fair, I understand there was a gentleman's agreement to unveil them all together, then Ford jumped the gun at the media tour. Chevy is holding back because it is introducing a new model. Can't do that until cars are ready to hit the showroom floor.
I know Jr, has had some awesome runs and he finished 7th at Kansas, but listening to his radio he sounds like he is getting discouraged by not getting to the front. Is the team starting to lose some momentum or confidence?
Not at all. That he's frustrated is good. A few years ago he'd be thrilled to be riding seventh.
I am a fan of Kyle, but I do not like many of the Kyle fans. Should I switch my allegiance to someone who doesn't have stupid fans like Rowdy Brad?
Have you asked what they think of you?
Personally I think the chats are overrated. I love what you guys are doing, but some people make these things a joke. Have you guys thought of cutting back a little just to keep the chats fresh?
Nope. I only do one a week so this is fresh for me.
So assuming in 5 or 6 years we start seeing Chase Elliot making some Noise in Nascar I know he has a develoment contract with Hendrick, Does he replace Jeff Gordon at Hendrick and drive the 24? Or Does Rick bring back the #25?
Can't bring back a number without a spot open in his driver lineup. The timing on Gordon might be about right. And I believe Chase is going to be an swesome talent.
What can we expect out of Pastrana? Sitting in the stands at TMS some older people were complaing saying he is just another Danica looking for publicity, but that is not True he is a FLAT OUT Winner in everything he has driven so far.
Not sure you can judge his winning in X Games vs. NASCAR. It'll be a work in progress, so don't get your expectations up too high for this race. I suspect since it's been so quiet we'll see quite a few wrecks on Saturday.
Since it's been a couple of months since we've seen Super Speedway racing, do you think the drivers will be able to get back into the groove of this new/old "pack-style" racing for Talladega?
If they don't NASCAR will adjust the temperatures so they have to.
With less team building their own engines, would it be smart for Penske to run Roush Yates engines, and make Dodge engines for other teams.
That is what Penske has hinted. It would be smart. My guess is he'll end up selling his engine department to Dodge so his people will keep their jobs.
What is going on with Bristol, what are they gonna do there?
We'll find out tomorrow. Bruton has been very quiet. All I know is his original promise was to return the track to exactly the way it was.
Hi Newt, who finishes higher in points this year: Hamlin or Stewart?
David, anything new on dodge over the weekend ?
Just that JGR will re-up with Toyota and RPM wants to stay with Ford and RFR wants RPM to stay with them.
Seems like there is not much feuding going on..you think that will change at Richmond? Or Darlington, perhaps?
Any of the next three races could open up some old wounds. Can't possibly stay this quiet.
Let me guess....Logano is your dark horse this weekend
Nope. I know I said another name earlier, but upon reflection I like Montoya.
Hey David, I was at "The Rock" weekend before last and watched the truck race on TV last week. Nelson Piquet, Jr. was very impressive. Do you see him in the Cup Series in a couple of years?????
If he keeps showing improvement somebody should give him a chance. Really hard to predict, though.
What would rather watch, IRL or F-1? Mr. Hinton chose FI, Mr. McGee chose IRL.
I have to side with Hinton.
What will be Finch's incentive to keep sinking money into an unsponsored car once the Chase starts and Urt is not in it?
That is the million dollar question. I suspect if Kurt doesn't make it Finch will back off.
Kurt to the #1 car?
Ganassi could do a lot worse.
Biffle stated that he didn't have the car for the track in Kansas and he still pulls out a top five. Is this the year for the Biff?
They put a lot of effort into turning the 16 around, and it's definitely paid off. Biff has been close a few times before, but too early to say this is his year. He as much said it the other day when he reminded of how Stewart caught fire.
Hey David, not what I want to hear as a Roush Fenway fan. At least tell me they will be at 4 cars next year I hope. Also, have you continued the diet you were on for that month you had?
The plan is to move Stenhouse Jr. into the 6. Unless they shut down another car that'll make four. Just not sure if it'll be four for the full season.
Please turn on!!!! Sheesh! Every week!!!!
Did before chad started.
I personally think Smoke has lost his momentum and probably won't contend for a while.
Yeah. Just like last year he's done.
whos the winner in nationwide and cup? whos a dark horse?
Logano and Hamlin.
When do you think Stewart Haas Racing will announced Danica 10th Sprint Cup race?
When we get closer to Indy.
What are your Expectations for Pastrana?? The man is a Winner in everything he has driven. I think people will be impressed.
Interested to see if he attracts any new fans, but don't have any real expectations yet. He's a good two or three years from being ready unless he stuns us all.
Is this Rowdy's week?
Hamlin now has more wins than Jr and has only been in Cup since 06. How many more do you think Hamlin will end up with when they are both retired?
Let me look in my crystal ball. Hamlin will have 36 wins and Dale Jr. 23.
Newt: Do you think Rick Hendrick should consider breaking ties with SHR after Ryan Newman cost them 2 races?
You're blaming him for what happened at Martinsville? No way. And to answer your question, no. He makes money selling engines and chassis.
are we going to have engine issues again this weekend?
Probably not as bad. The weather, cooler temperatures, played a factor at Kansas. Teams were set up to run 10 degrees warmer.
Hey Newt ...who will finish ahead of who Danica or Pastrami ???
Are you in the race?
So whats the Bristol annoucement tomorow going to be ?
The new configuration.
How about my boy James Buescher? Do you believe he has a future in the Cup Series?
Success in the lower levels typically leads to something.
Do you think Nelson Piquet is going to get his first win this year?
Looking like it. And he won a K&N race already, didn't he?
Do we see nascar adding more short tracks and less 1.5 ?
Probably not, but in my world I would.
Is it to late for the 5 to make the chase via points? Is the 5 only hope is wins?
Points will be tough. But he has plenty of time to get into the top 20 and get in on wins. The problem with points is there are so many people to pass.
Jr. vs Who would be NASCAR's dream scenario of a duel for the title at Homestead?
Kyle, of course.
Does Biffle have enough to win it all this year?
Heck yeah, but way too early to predict.
What does the 88 team need change to get from running top 10 to be running top 5 and winning?
Really, nothing. Just need to pick up a tiny bit more speed.
Hi Dave thanks for your time ...do think Danica is better looking in a fire-suit or a bathing suit ???
You're welcome, and you know I can't answer that.
Dale Jr is my BigFoot. Everyone keeps talking about him winning every race since Daytona, yet know one has seen it. So how about at Richmond. It sure be nice to see the 88 finally in victory lane.
This is where I've been pointing all season long. And you're right, we have been predicting it for quite a while.
David why do you defend burnt toast so much ...he is not that great of a driver
He's still a pup. He got thrown into this situation a year or two earlier than they wanted to let Smoke go start his own team.
Dave any chance Nascar changes the last 10 races in 2013.
They hinted to me last year that some changes could be coming in 2013, so cross your fingers.
How is Junior Johnson recovering? And what is the latest news on his son's driving career? Still committed to making it in NASCAR?
Doing better, but not out of the woods. As for his son, I haven't heard lately. Not sure how his dad's health has impacted things.
Was someone drunk when they made the trucks schedule?
What don't you like?
Who reaches Victory Lane first: MWR or HMS?
Is Labonte done?
Has been for a few years. Nothing personal. I like him. But he hasn't won in a long time and hasn't contended for a Chase spot ever, really.
Whats your opinion on lapped traffic? should newman got out of the way? is their a lack of respect?
I didn't get to see all that happened with Newman because I was with my mom in the hospital, but Newman always has raced everyone hard. Now if he was trying to keep from going two laps down because he had hope of getting back on the lead lap . . . well, I guess you can't fault him for trying. But if JJ was that much faster, yes, he should have let him go easier.
Hey newton will we ever see the racing like the days of the black 3 or we dont to a bunch of whinny drivers
Thought you guys decided Kyle Busch drover like Earnhardt.
this is the week logAno gets his win he's great at Richmond
Could be in Nationwide.
In his career Montoya has proven to be a driver who gets better as the season wears on. Somehow despite his mediocre start he's sixteenth in the points. Any chance EGR gets there act figured out and JPM can sneak into the chase?
Well, Tony and SHR got its act together at the end of last season. Montoya still has two road courses he could win on, and he's dynamite at Indy.
How on earth is Hambone a dark horse in the NW series in a JGR car?!?!
You don't have 48 in the top 5 not even darkhorse? Wow.
Trying reverse psychology this week. I actualy believe he'll have a good shot of winning.
Living in Cleveland makes it easier to be a Jr fan because I am used to disappointment. Should I start liking the Cubs too?
The race had a nice finish Sunday, but it was another snoozefest for 2 hours and 50 minutes. Do you think Edwards will be in the mix come Chase time?
First, there was a lot of good racing in the pack. Just not a lot up front. It happens sometimes. Remember the days when only one or two cars finished on the lead lap. Before there was social media we never heard about that. You just need to appreciate the races for what they have. Truex coming close was a great story Sunday. Biffle winning at Texas was a great story. As for Edwards, there is a jinx on the driver that finishes second the year before, you know.
That's it for me. Thanks for the great questions. Enjoy the race this weekend and stop by and ask questions on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn.
