Chat with Brett Okamoto

Brett Okamoto
  (1:01 PM)

What's up guys? Thanks for joining me as always and apologies for missing last week. I was busy in Atlanta with the Jones/Evans fight. Lots to talk about today. I was at the Overeem hearing yesterday in person and have to say, thought the NSAC went easy on him ... again. Interested to hear your thoughts. Let's go.

Jeff (Clearwater)

Which of the Jones Brothers will have the bigger April, Chandler if he goes in the first round or Jon after beating Rashad?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:03 PM)

Well, I'm biased but I've got to say Jon Jones. He is the star in his sport right now. Honestly, before Atlanta, I've never felt Jones' star power 100 percent. This time, he's reached that point where literally everything is about him. The world seems to stop when he walks in a room. It actually reminds me of how it feels when Mayweather or Pacquiao come in to a gym. All eyes turn. I got to meet Arthur in Atlanta but not Chandler. Hopefully down the road I'll have the opportunity.

Justin (DE) [via mobile]

what do u think of brendan schaub? obviously has a nice stand up game but a very suspect chin. what can he do to improve?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:05 PM)

Well, because we now are fully aware this guy can't take a punch like some of the others he has to be careful. In the situation with Rothwell, he had him hurt so of course he has to move in, but this guy needs to work extra hard on his defense, on covering up after he throws because let's face it, he can't eat the punches that most heavyweights can. It's a bad problem to have because you can't really practice getting a better chin.

Trevor (Mpls)

Can you briefly explain what's going on with Silva-Sonnen not being in Brazil? There is still UFC 147 in Brazil, correct? What happened with that 1 fight? Would have been AWESOME to have that fight in Brazil!! What gives and why can't they make it happen??

Brett Okamoto
  (1:06 PM)

Dana has pointed to the United Nations conference in Rio that same weekend but any time I or other media have tried to get real specific details out of him he's kind of deflected the question. What it sounds like is that the card will stay down there and get Aldo now, and I'm hearing they are getting close on signing an opponent. Aldo will be moved off of Calgary.

Raff (Phila)

If you were Dana White and the Fretitta's, what would you do with Overeem?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:08 PM)

With what the commission decided yesterday you only have to wait til the end of the year to have him fight again. He's eligible for a license as early as December 27. So treat it like he just got injured. He'll fight for the title in his first fight back I believe. And while I blame the NSAC on going easy on Overeem I don't blame the UFC for plugging him in a big fight as soon as he gets back. They have a business to run. It's the regulatory body's (NSAC) job to punish a fighter for a failed drug test and they pretty much failed to do that yesterday.

Justin (DE) [via mobile]

its a common question, but will jones move up to heavyweight if he defeats hendo? and if he stays who do u see challenging him if he overcomes hendo?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:09 PM)

He'll move up probably late next year I'm thinking. Depends on if they have a viable challenger for him. If Gustafsson wins a few more fights you can market that fight. If he loses and there's no one else, then he'll probably move up. He's already cutting a decent amount of weight to make 205. If there are no big fights left for him he's probably ready to go up and the UFC will get on board.

Andy (Chicago)

I am not as impressed now with UFC 146 card with all the shake ups. Is it just me?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:10 PM)

I'm sure it's not. The Overeem/JDS fight was going to be one of the bigger fights of the year. Mir is a good fill in but even he and his camp straight up admitted, yeah, the bigger fight right now would have been Overeem. He's still basically "new" to the UFC and coming off an easy win over Lesnar. That's the fight people want to see. It's too bad.

Chuck (Il.)

Hey Brett - Any info on Mac Danzig's ankle injury?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:11 PM)

Just that it looked terrible! No, I was on press row all night in Atlanta and then Mac didn't come to the press conference so I didn't get a chance to ask him. Pretty amazing though he was able to win the fight with that, especially since it happened early.

CB (TX)

A guy gets a year off for smoking weed, hurtful to no one except maybe himself, and Overeem is busted for steroids, dangerous to any opposing fighter and gets 9 months. Unbelievable.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:13 PM)

I would have to agree 1000 percent with that. They roll in this inept doctor and basically say, well Overeem screwed up going to this idiot but don't punish him for that kind of mistake. The NSAC asked a few hard questions but didn't really follow up and just accepted anything these guys said as the truth. I've got to admit, I left that hearing shaking my head.

Eric (Baltimore)

What's your take on Overeems explination for his failed test. Seems like he had alot of "evidence" to back up his claim. There will always be people that think he is on Roids...Dude is Jacked!!!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:15 PM)

This guy has been in the UFC for like five minutes and he's already been in multiple situations that needed an explanation. He left the country before his last fight at the exact same time the NSAC requested a sample. Then he was described as "speeding out" of the building when the NSAC came to collect a test in March. Then he tests positive. Come on. There are only so many coincidences that can occur with one guy.

Tom (Chicago)

Auto update is off

Brett Okamoto
  (1:15 PM)

Thanks. On now.

Ryan (Dallas)

Are you surprised that Big Nog is able to come back from his injury after eight months, and your thoughts on his fight with Kongo?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:17 PM)

I am pretty surprised. I hope he didn't rush it. If he's good and he's been able to have a legitimate camp, I think he beats Kongo. His boxing is underrated and he's much better than Kongo on the ground. Kongo is probably a better wrestler, but Kongo never wrestles guys when he's the better wrestler. So, I like Nog in the fight.

Ed (NJ)

LOMBARD!!!! Who's he getting first?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:17 PM)

Let me pull up the UFC middleweight list here ...

Brett Okamoto
  (1:18 PM)

It's too bad Belfort isn't available right now. That would be the fight I'd want to see.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:18 PM)

Also too bad he can't fight Luke Rockhold. I'd love to see that.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:19 PM)

I've seen Brian Stann thrown out there and at this point, yeah I think that's the fight they'll make. Makes the most sense from a business standpoint and it's a good stylistic fight. You guys down with that?

Jeff (Salt Lake City)

Edgar had an interview the other day and made it sound like he's no longer fighting Bendo. Were people reading too much into his comments? He made it almost sound like he's going to be dropping to take the 145 fight with Aldo like everyone wants desperately.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:20 PM)

Not sure which interview you're referring to but I saw him in Atlanta and I got the sense he's obviously very happy to get the rematch. That's what he wanted, that's what he fought for. It would shock me if all of a sudden he's had a change of heart. Maybe the interviewer just caught him at a weird time.

hector (chicago)

e.alvarez departs bellator and his 1st fight would be with g.melendez with the winner fighting the ufc lightweight champ after strikforce finally goes under! sounds feasible??

Brett Okamoto
  (1:21 PM)

No, because they don't want to sink a high-profile fighter like Alvarez into Strikeforce. I'd like to see it because Gil needs a fight but it won't happen.

JP (Columbus, OH)

My first hunches were Lombard against Belfort or Bisping, but with both guys busy I'd take Lombard-Shields

Brett Okamoto
  (1:22 PM)

That's not a bad option but the fireworks will be Stann vs. Lombard, plus if Shields beats him in a Shields-esque unanimous decision, you kill the buzz on Lombard and yet create none in Shields. So, you've got to do the Stann fight over that.

Stoke (Oregon)

Do you think Schaub's suspect chin has something to do with all the blows to the head he took during his football career?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:22 PM)

No. I think fighters still take more blows to the head than football players. Think of all the sparring sessions these guys do. I just think some guys can take a shot and others can't.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

Who do you think will be Aldo's opponent in Brazil?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:23 PM)

I can't say ... but I'm hearing rumors on a specific 145er. We'll see if they announce something in the near future. If it's who I'm hearing, might come as a surprise to some.

Andrew (Anaheim)

Who do you think Chael will get for his first title defense?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:25 PM)

Of the real belt or the fake one he carries? If Chael wins and Munoz wins I think it'd be those two. They were already scheduled to fight. Munoz is on a roll. We'll see if that's the scenario that actually plays out though ...

Alan (South Florida)

Brett, how does Rashad get no love in the P4P rankings? He did better against Jones than anyone before him.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:25 PM)

I had Rashad at like No. 7 I think before the Jones fight. The thing about p4p is that all the guys from like No. 5 to No. 15 are so close that if someone loses, it's hard not to drop them, you know what I mean? I still consider Rashad one of the absolute best in the sport.

Ken (ca.)

Were you impressed or more surprised with Mcdonalds victory ovre Torres?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:26 PM)

I was surprised Torres stood the whole time with him. Never even thought about a takedown it didn't look like. Why? McDonald is a phenomenal counter puncher. He played into his opponent's game. I didn't get it.

chris (ashland)

lombard to ufc...finally....now question is, contender? or another guy who wins everywhere but the UFC?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:27 PM)

Honest answer ... I don't think he'll put a run together. Level in competition is about to go up significantly and there are tremendous wrestlers at the top of 185.

Jose R (Orlando, FL)

Im a little upset witht the fight card in FL. I have never been to a UFC event and I'm thinking UFC 148 should be the event I use the credit card on go, your recommendation? How do you stack it to UFC 100?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:28 PM)

Yes. If you can get a ticket, go. I love the Faber-Cruz fight. Now you're adding Silva/Sonnen II? And WHAT IF Silva loses? You can say you were there. WHAT IF Silva retires after? You can say you were there. Or at the very least, WHAT IF he drops Chael with some spinning/flying kick and does a backflip off the top of the cage? You were there!

Tommy (Denver,CO)

It doesn't seem like many people are giving Hendo a chance for Jones. Assuming he doesn't move to HW after this fight, seriously who's fighting for the next title shot?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:30 PM)

It's gotta be Gus. I can't think of anyone else. No interest in Bader. No interest in Phil Davis, at the moment. Shogun, Rampage, Forrest, no interest. 205 is thin.

JP (Columbus, OH)

I'm down with Stann. I think Lombard needs to start with the 2nd tier middleweights and prove that he can beat some real names before we book him against the Spider. Stann, Belfort, title shot. Or Stann-Bisping-Belfort, title shot.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:30 PM)

Yeah, he shouldn't get a shot against Anderson immediately and a fight against Stann is an awesome style fight.

Jason (IA)

OBVIOUSLY they went easy on Overeem. If they really start to crack down on PED's in the UFC, there's simply no sport left.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:31 PM)

No, there's still a sport. Just a clean one. If they start cracking down then inevitably fighters will say, hey this isn't worth it. The NSAC is on the right track by utilizing random tests, but then you catch someone and you don't penalize him to the full extent for it? Why even test the guys then?

Jeff (Ohio)

Brett, in the event that Sonnen beats Silva and defends once or twice, would you see GSP-Sonnen as a potential "megafight"? Sonnen seems to like GSP, so the trash-talk won't be as crazy, but it's a fight he'd take I'm sure.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:33 PM)

Eh. I guess anything can happen. But even if Sonnen defends a few times he won't be considered the No. 2 or No. 1 p4p fighter in the world. That's why there was always so much interest in GSP/Silva because they were like 1A and 1B. I don't really see that happening. More likely I see a Rashad/Jones remix where GSP and Rory MacDonald split ways and divide the Canadian fan base! That'd be a storyline.

James (CT)

When will Jones face someone his own size? He will never be tested until then.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:33 PM)

Next year.

Andrew (Anaheim)

Which championship fight will be the next to have a finish and not go to the judges?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:34 PM)

Mir vs. JDS. Rarely do the elite heavies go five.

Christian (Pullman)

Think Hendo will hang up the gloves for the last time if he loses to Jones? Also why is everyone writing him off? That right hand could sink the titanic.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:35 PM)

Everyone is writing him off because he's fighting Jon Jones. Jones is bigger, faster, has the reach of course. Younger. He's got every advantage. You're right, the right hand is a game changer and he is a crafty veteran so maybe he'll find a way to land it once but ... Jones is just so ... big.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

Why does the UFC on Fox always seem to be on the same night as a big boxing match?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:36 PM)

There are certain weekends that are just good to have a fight on. Cinco de Mayo is historically one of them. Refresh my memory here, every time the UFC has finished in time to watch boxing right? I'm planning on watching both for sure.

James (CT)

What kind of punishment were you looking for for Overeem? 2 years? 3? It's been obvious he was juicing for about 4 years now, but as multiple media members have said over that period, he has never tested positive before.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:38 PM)

At least give him the full 12 months. Why does he deserve a three-month reprieve? Because the NSAC felt that by doing so it would leave the possibility he fights in Las Vegas on New Years. When you're dealing with an athlete who has cheated, those aspects shouldn't come into the equation. As part of his conditional license last year he was going to be tested twice. He failed the first one. And then you reduce the typical sentence for the crime? Why?

Chris (Boston)

AFter watching Travis Browne score the SUB win (and deliver a wicked high knee) at what point do you have him take on either a Werdum/Silva or Barnett/Cormier loser

Brett Okamoto
  (1:39 PM)

He's right there. Browne is deceptively athletic. I still think that top tier of guys will beat him but the guys you mentioned ... he's got a shot against every one of those. I think you've pegged his spot in the division accurately.

Rick (Kansas)

Why doesn't the UFC just put Overeem on another card in another state/country?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:40 PM)

Because that looks bad. I kind of thought they would, since technically he's not suspended. But Dana told me I was crazy for even bringing it up. And they shouldn't. How poorly would it reflect on the UFC if they took this guy who just failed a drug test to another country and let him fight like it never happened?

Bruno (Brazil)

Come on, Brett! Throw us dissapointed brazilians a bone here! Give us a hint who Aldo will fight! Not even a hint?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:41 PM)

Don't have enough to go on quite yet ... like I said if what I'm hearing is accurate I don't think you'll have to wait a long time for an answer.

Ryan (Ohio)

Tired of people saying that Jones is picking on people smaller than him. It's stupidity. The guy makes 205 without a problem, and weighs just as much as his opponent on fight night. If the haters are hating because of his length/reach then guess what - he's gonna still have that advantage at heavyweight. So in that sense, there truly is nobody "his size" to pick on.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:42 PM)

Yeah anyone accusing Jones of ... I don't know ... avoiding a challenge is pretty off. This was the division he started in and he's taken all these fights against veterans in a very short period of time. I even think 2013 is pretty early to move to heavyweight. He's 24! But I think what most people are saying is that by now, we pretty much see that no one at 205 is going to beat this guy. It's a fair (but unfair) fight.

Steve (NY)

Brett, what do you think the chances of Dan Henderson beating Jones are? I think he's got a decent shot. If you look at some of his previous fights he has handled bigger fighters well. He's a tough guy and he is not afraid to stand and bang. I think the reason Jones looks so dominant is that a lot of guys are afraid to go after him. I understand that part of it is that Jones is so dominant and has such a reach advantage that people can't get in on him but if anyone can beat him I'd say it would be Hendo.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:44 PM)

I give Henderson 1 in 100 chance. He's going to look so small in the cage with Jones and he'll be 42 by the time the fight takes place.

John (LA)

Will they be testing Overeem in the next 9 months?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:44 PM)

No. Because he doesn't have a fight scheduled in Vegas.

Jerry (Texas)

So in your opinion, is Lombard another Shields, a guy with a lot of promise, then comes to the UFC and now hes just one of the guys?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:45 PM)

Pretty much. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he won't be competitive. It's not like I'm saying he'll be cut within a year. But I'm not expecting him to run through the division and hold the belt within a year either.

Rick (Kansas)

Sounded like Eddie Alvarez is wanting to stay in Bellator with the "show me the money" statement. Your opinion on whether he stays in BFC or goes to UFC?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:46 PM)

Well, we just saw Lombard leave. Obviously, Bellator couldn't or wouldn't match the contract the UFC offered. The UFC is so competitive itself, they might offer Alvarez pretty much anything it takes to draw him over. If I had to guess, yes, Alvarez will move to the UFC at the end of his contract.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

Have you caught any of the 24/7 shows for the Mayweather fight? I can't put my finger on it but why are they so much better then the UFC version?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:47 PM)

I have not watched them yet but I will. 24/7 is always outstanding. They are better than the UFC because they've done them for years, boxers make for better subjects (just because there are so few stars that the stars that do exist seem bigger) and it's HBO production. They are top notch.

Shane (Louisville)

Any truth to the rumors BJ Penn wants to fight again? If so, who and when?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:48 PM)

That's what Dana said. Any conversation I've had with Penn or his people hasn't sounded promising and although he doesn't look completely out of shape, he doesn't really look like he's been in the gym twice a day either. That said, I always thought Penn wouldn't end on the Diaz fight. No clue though as to when he'd be looking to return.

Stoke (Oregon)

Is Jon Jones vs Anderson Silva even worth discussing?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:49 PM)

For fun we can, if you want. But I don't have a great feeling that fight will ever happen. Today, right now, I'd say Anderson would negotiate a catch weight ... maybe if it's even just 200 pounds ... and he'd win. But with every day that passes, I lean more towards Jones winning that fantasy fight.

Ed (Work)

You going to be in town for UFC on Fox 3? Will you lurk through the field of tailgating junkies pre fight?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:50 PM)

I will not be at Fox 3, unfortunately. Franklin McNeil and Chuck Mindenhall live in that area so we'll have solid coverage. I might still try to work my way into the Mayweather fight.

John (St. Petersburg)

Jones weighs more than all his opponents except maybe Bader

Brett Okamoto
  (1:51 PM)

Jones weighs more than Bader.

Jeff (OH)

What is the April 21 version of Ben Rothwell capable of? Dude looked svelte!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:52 PM)

He did. He also got rocked and was "-" <--- that close to being knocked out. Good for him though that he lost the weight. Him gassing in the first round was getting a bit hard to watch.

Chip (Springfield, MO)

Jones looked very beatable againt Evans. He looked as if he was surprised that he got hit, and if Rashaad had been more aggressive, he might of won. I think Hendo has a great shot to beat him.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:53 PM)

Chip ... I've got to disagree with you my friend. He looked UNbeatable to me in that fight. Rashad tried some things but Jones put him in that kickboxing distance and picked him apart. That's what Jones does.

Steve (NY)

Will Fedor ever make his way to the UFC? Is Dana even still interested in bringing him aboard?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:54 PM)

NO!!!!! Is what Dana would tell you. And I agree with him. Come on. Fedor is a legend but he is past his prime. His management group makes unrealistic demands. It ain't happening.

Jeff (Salt Lake City)

Do you think the UFC ever tries to peg Overeem on a Vegas card again?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:56 PM)

Yeah, absolutely. By denying his request, the NSAC knows the UFC will most likely bring him back to the commission that denied him to relicense. The NSAC basically threw that out there in their deliberations that, "We want a guarantee he won't fight during this nine-month period and that he'll come back to be relicensed." That is what will happen.

Tommy (OH)

What'd you think of those "elbow jabs" that Jones was throwing? I felt so bad for poor Rashad...

Brett Okamoto
  (1:57 PM)

I did too, Tommy, I did too. What are you gonna do? And then you take those and you're like, alright I'm still okay but I need a second, and Jones just doesn't give you any time to recover because you can't take him down and you can't laterally move out of his range. It's not fair!

John (St. Petersburg)

Vegas had Jones -600 over Rashad, it must be -800 over Henderson, no?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:58 PM)

One unofficial line I saw was right around the -550 range. I don't remember that he was -600 over Rashad, that seems high? Wasn't it closer to -550?

John ( twitter @jblazeNYC) (New York)

Why should we believe Lombard is going 2 do any better than the other "superstars" that have recently come into UFC (the 2 top ranked FW's, Jorge Santiagos return, I personally think shields lost to Kampman)?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:59 PM)

I agree with you. The UFC is a different animal. Every single fight Lombard has in the beginning is going to be a very difficult fight. And he's 34. Which is not too old to be elite in this game but he might not be able to afford many losses that interrupt title runs because you're basically setting yourself back a year from the title with each loss in the UFC.

Stoke (Oregon)

Is your favorite movie The Notebook?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:00 PM)

It's actually The Vow now.

Dino (San Francisco)

Do you think Nate Diaz can put it together with Miller? It feels like he's better than Miller in all areas (besides wrestling), but he's also come up short whenever he's had a "big time" fight. I'd love to see Nate get himself a title shot!

Brett Okamoto
  (2:01 PM)

I leaning Diaz. I think Miller will have a hard time getting in the position's he wants. Diaz has a size advantage and his ground skills are different than Miller's but just as good in their own right. I think boxing will be the difference. Diaz will beat up Miller on the feet.

Marc (Malden, MA)

After Jones beats Hendo, he should fight Anderson Silva and really I have no interest in seeing him fight anyone else. I am so sick of these guys saying "I won't fight this guy or that guy." Are you not a professional? Do you not want to be considered the best? Hell, I'd fight my brother for the payday they get.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:02 PM)

I agree with most of what you said there but AS is the ONLY guy you want to see Jones fight? I'd watch him fight Junior in a second. That'd be a great fight. I'd watch him fight Cain. I think he'll do very well at heavyweight but it will be interesting because he won't be able to get away with mistakes quite as easily.

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

What's next for Mitrione? Brendan Schaub?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:03 PM)

I think it's going to be Dave Herman.

Raff (Phila)

Is there any fighter outside of the UFC that you think could come in and legitimately challenge for a title?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:04 PM)

Gilbert Melendez. And Luke Rockhold if Anderson Silva were to retire. Alvarez maybe, but I 155 is stacked I don't think he'd quite get there.

Tyler (Oklahoma)

Aoki cant beat any top 10 ranked fighter at lw. So that takes away the one ok win that Gilbert has. Can we agree now that hes Gilbert way overrated?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:06 PM)

I don't think Gilbert is overrated but he's in a tough spot right now. EVERYONE expects him to blow by Josh Thompson, which is a tougher fight for him than you think. Then if he were to come to the UFC, 155 is so stacked he'd fight great guys and if he lost, people would say, There I told you. Gil is overrated. Well, maybe it's not that he's overrated it's just that he fought a really good guy. Basically anything short of Gil defending his belt and then coming and winning the UFC belt is going to be looked at as a failure, which isn't fair to that guy. I do think if he keeps the SF belt, eventually when he does come to the UFC they'll give him an immediate shot at the belt to unify them. So, at least he won't have to win a bunch of fights to the get the opportunity.

John (LA)

When would Overeem need to apply for a license if he wants to fight on Dec 27?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:07 PM)

No, that is the day he can apply for a license. He'd have to fight after that. It would be up to the UFC to build a card around a fighter who may or may not be licensed (but you assume he would).

Eric (NJ)

Does Munonz have an opponent lined up?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:07 PM)

Yeah, Chris Weidman on July 11.

Fadi(Tustin) [via mobile]

Who's your pick between Cain and Big Foot?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:08 PM)

Cain. I'm amongst the group who feel he wasn't 100 percent in that title fight with JDS. Think he'll bounce back real strong against Silva.

TR (Reno)

Dana on interview w jim rome just now " i know reem lied to me" thoughts?...

Brett Okamoto
  (2:09 PM)

Yep. Think Dana's pretty much right on.

Fadi(Tustin) [via mobile]

Hey Berry, if Cain wins his fight against Big Foot will he still be next for the title? Would BF be next if he wins?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:10 PM)

Berry? Was that an auto correct or do I look like a Berry? Cain will get the shot if he wins. If Big Foot wins? I think he'd need one more. But they might just come out and say it's a No. 1 contender fight for marketing purposes. Doubt it though.

Rick (Kansas)

John in New York forgets to mention Nick Diaz, Overeem, Benson Henderson, Anthony Pettis, and other "superstars" that have "recently" came into the UFC. Not sure why he even mentioned the FWs considering NONE of them were bred in the UFC.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:11 PM)

Good point. It's not like every single outside fighter that comes to the UFC fails. Although, all of those you mentioned were all Zuffa employees ... so I think we kind of forget they were fighting in an outside organization. They were fighting higher quality competition than say, Bellator guys are.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

What does Hominick do now that he lost 3 straight?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:12 PM)

Clean things up man. Take a break, maybe hit a few different camps and find your stride again. He's developed some bad habits. I've never seen him get hit that easily, especially by basically the same punch over and over again. He had his chin up, completely exposed when he threw the jab and was wide open to the counter right. He's never been like that before.

Gerry (San Francisco, CA)

IMO, Palhares is really short for a 185er, yet he is a force in the division. If he were to cut weight to 170, how do you think he would do?

He'd do well if the cut didn't kill him. You never know how a cut is going to affect a guy. He's short but he just seems to have that body type where weight wouldn't fly off for him. Plus, no need to move right now, he's doing fine at 185.

I was blown away by Rory MacDonald. The wasy he handled himself after taking some shots on the feet shows he is very experienced for such a young fighter. I can see him dominating the WW division for years. What are your thoughts?

Now we're on the same page Chip. Agree with you completely there. Rory is well rounded, he's got a good athletic body for 170 pounds and he's rock solid mentally. We talk about guys like Thiago Silva or Rampage as "intimidating" ... to me Rory MacDonald is intimidating. He has this look on his face like the fight is already over and though Bruce is announcing their names. He's part of the future.
