Hello everyone, let's get started.
Hey Garry. After looking at the offers that have gone out for the recruiting class, do you think there are too many offers out to DB's? Let's say all of them sign with USC, due to the sanctions, won't that take up the bulk of the scholarship space we have to work with?
I don't think there are too many offers out to DB's. First off, DB is a position of need in this class for the Trojans. Secondly, it's a terrific group of DB's on the west coast, arguably the most talented position of all. Third, the SC coaches will have a good handle on the situation in terms of not getting carried away and taking too many. It's part of the art of recruiting to manage more offers than available spots for each position.
What is the word on cravens? Is he a heavy USC lean? What are the SC coaches pitching to him as far as what position they want him in and how he will be utilized?
Yes, I would call Su'a Cravens a heavy SC lean. The coaches are being honest about showing him interest on both sides of the ball. At first it was fullback, then it was linebacker or safety and now they are telling him not to rule out the possibility of tailback.
Hi Garry, what out of state players do you see ending up a trojan? Any possible d-lineman from out of state the we have a good shot of landing?
SC is off to a pretty good start with verbals from OOS players in Kenny Bigelow and Max Browne, two of the top 13 players in the ESPN 150 rankings. RB Ty Isaac is certainly another top choice (Michigan or SC) along with a pair of Arizona prospects in DB Priest Willis and versatile Chans Cox. There are also a slew of southeast prospects with SC offers but it's a little too early to judge how legit the interest is from the player end.
Do you see SC coaches offering Eddie Vanderdoes (Auburn CA DT)? What are our chances of landing him with Oregon being one of the main competitors for his services?
I think the chances really increased recently when USC QB coach Clay Helton was on campus to do an evaluation of Vanderdoes, who happened to be playing in a baseball game that day. He starred both on the pitchers mound and at the plate, which is likely to impress the coaches with his athleticism. If SC offers, I think they would have a great shot to land him.
With the recent chatter of Ty Issac, Su'a Cravens, and Justin Davis leaning towards USC, what chances do they have with Robert Nkemdiche, Ryan Green or Vernon Hargreaves III?
I can see that with Cravens and Davis but I'm not ready to call Isaac a lean just yet. Let's see what happens if a trip with his mom takes place, otherwise Michigan has to still be considered a legitimate option for him. Of the other three, all are longshots but Hargreaves will have Nelson Agholor in his ear talking up USC so that can't hurt the Trojans chances.
Garry,Would the 3 prefered walkons be scholarship althletes if there were no sanctions? Do you see thses three contributing as impact players or are they more the special teams/depth type?
They would probably not be scholarship guys but they are three very solid walk-ons, exactly the kind of walk-ons the Trojans need during the next couple years. They are good enough to have attracted offers at other places and they are also good students, which helped them qualify for academic aid that allowed them to choose USC as an option. I wouldn't rule out contributions as depth or special teams.
Garry, what do you think of Dane Crane out of Santa Margarita? Any chance he gets an offer? He is the son of former Trojan player Bob Crane and could maybe be a great quick commit.
Very good center. It's just that offensive line, including center, isn't really a priority for this class with the Trojans. Crane has some solid offers, a couple Pac-12 schools and Florida State included, and if USC offered I'm guessing they would jump near the top of his consideration list.
Hi Gary. Do you think Rialto DT Kenneth Carter will get an offer from USC and is there any way we can sneak Kenny Bigelow onto this years squad? ;)
He's a bubble guy right now but I wouldn't rule out some real consideration for an offer. D-line is a big priority for this class and the coaches don't want to get caught short there. LOL on Bigelow, I'm guessing both sides would love to see that happen, Kenny was at the spring game and got a good taste of what is waiting for him in college.
What Florida prospect is high on USC?
I don't know that any of them are particularly high on SC right now but the Trojans are on the short list of several Florida prospects. It's just that most of the time you can't really judge an OOS prospect like that until the process goes along and you know how legit the interest is. The good news for USC fans is that pretty much any top Florida player has an SC offer, from Laremy Tunsil to Ryan Green to Vernon Hargreaves.
With the addition of Tee Martin to the staff and his SEC ties, which players out of that area is Tee recruiting? Do you see his addtion allowing us to pull more players away from that area?
I do think Tee Martin is going to increase the exposure in that area. The Trojans already have good name recognition in Florida, particularly in Tampa with Monte Kiffin, but Martin just completed a tour of visits in Georgia for players such as Carl Lawson, Trey Johnson and Montravious Adams.
Some articles have mentioned Tee Shepard as being interested in SC again. Is there a chance SC will offer him a spot? Is he able to Greyshirt and if so, what are the advantage(s) of doing so in regards to SC scholarship reduction?
Tee's father said last week that the Trojans were the top choice for his son. No word yet on any interest from the USC end. There are rumors of health and academic issues in terms of his departure from Notre Dame, so far only the health issues have been confirmed. It's known that Shepard has also shown interest in UCLA and Washington. If he is academically set and healthy, it would be a good advantage for USC to go after him because he's a very good player, the kind who is worthy of one of the 15 scholarships.
Any chatter on who USC will look at to replace Mesa and Knight as GAs?
Mesa is back this year to coach the tight ends. Shawn Howe will coach defensive line.
GP how would you rate the ot Falah versus last years crop of west coast ot's?
I wouldn't put him ahead of anybody in the group of Tuerk, Murphy, Banner, Peat or Garnett. Falah is more of a "project" than anybody in that group but his tools are there to be at that level, he's just not as experienced or developed at this point.
who's the better prospect between Davis and Isaac? what players, pro or college, do each remind you of?
Isaac is just so physically impressive with a style that reminds me of Marcus Allen. That's a pretty impressive combination. There's something about Davis though, a slashing runner who fits the SC running style perfectly. If you remember Steve Webster at USC, that's who Davis will remind you of. Those two would make a pretty special RB duo in this class for the Trojans if things work out that way.
Who is the best LT that USC has a realistic chance at signing for the 2013 class?
I don't know if Nico Falah will end up at LT or RT but I would say he's the OT that the Trojans have the most realistic chance of signing.
Looks like those walk-ons are starting to come in good numbers. Any other player out there that can be an incoming walk-on and help our squad?
The three big names at walk-on so far are DB's Christian Tober, Ryan Dillard and Elijah Steen. All are what you would consider above-average walk-ons.
Garry, what position or positions are now feeling the loss of depth because of the scholarship limitation?
This spring we saw TB, FB and WR take a couple injury hits and the results were obvious. There was also a run of injuries at TE but with five bodies there in the fall the Trojans should be OK. I would put tailback as the primary area of need to bulk up.
Hello Garry! With Max Browne on board as QB in the next class, will he be the last signal caller at SC til David Sills arrives?
I think that depends on what happens to the other QB's on the roster. Jesse Scroggins is still fighting academic issues and there is always the chance one of the three back-ups this year could decide to transfer if the depth chart doesn't work out for them. You always like to have 4 QB's on the roster at any time so a class of 2014 quarterback is still an option for the Trojans.
Will anybody be wearing #1 this year?
We haven't heard that yet. Lane Kiffin has made a big deal of the fact that a receiver is going to have to earn that number, both Woods and Lee would qualify so far but they seem pretty set on #2 and
Every year an incoming freshman seems to exceed expectations. With Agholar and Williams already seeming to have high expectations, what other incoming freshman do you see exceeding expectations?
Josh Shaw and Gerald Bowman are incoming players but neither are freshmen, I still see them being capable of instant impacts. I wouldn't put anything past Darreus Rogers either.
I would also add Jabari Ruffin to that list.
What are you hearing about the recruiting capabilities of Hazelton and Saunders?
Not hearing a ton so far. We're hearing of campus visits that they are making but they've only been on the road for a little over a week now so it's hard to really judge how they are doing. The word on Sanders from some Nebraska people I spoke with is that he's a very good recruiter.
Will the USC Trojans have the Most Players Selected in the 2012 NFL Draft Probably in the first 2 Rounds?
No, I only expect two Trojans to be selected in the opening two rounds.
GP recently leaked possibel sanctions for oregon were pretty severe, any word how this will pan out, and the effect on this years class it will have postively for us?
I'm also hearing rumblings that the penalties could be fairly stiff, not SC level but pretty strong nonetheless. Have no idea how accurate those thoughts are but it would be disappointing if something serious doesn't come down, this was a pretty clear case of skirting the rules to gain a competitive advantage.
Gary , do you think SC has what it takes to win it all this year?
I do. The pieces are in place to make a solid run at it, now it comes down to health and good fortune.
Does Max Turek have the feet to play let tackle? Also, is Zach Banner athletic enough to play well there?
I think Tuerk does have the feet to play there but we won't know for sure until he gets here. My hunch is that he ends up at guard. Banner is going to be an interesting one to watch, he will be a home run if he can maintain his athleticism at that size.
Gary, Im worried about usc getting beat up again against a big stanford o line with a small barry sanders jr . will look like oregon st. with quiz
This should be a more mature USC front seven on defense and that will only help. It's amazing that we're talking about how USC will match-up physically with Stanford, that's not a conversation that's taken place too many times until recent years.
Any chance Heyward can put on enough weight to play NT? Does Tavai have the frame to be a 300 LB NT?
Heyward is ways away from that. He's closer to the 275 mark right now. I do think Tavai can get there but he's just not there yet, the good news is that he's as strong as can be and if he adds the bulk he would be a very effective NT. Temple is probably the guy who can get the closest to 300 and, of course, Woods is already there.
GP saw on the site best ot's in sc hx who is the best you have seen?
It's pretty hard to go against Boselli in terms of what I saw the player do at USC. Munoz was the best of all for what he did in the NFL but Tony Boselli in college was just as good as you could hope for.
In Fadoodleville,UT the Fadoodleville frogs (0-52) are going up against the Canadian Killerz(72-0) whats your pick on whos gonna win cuz im going to the game and placing a bet.
Best guess - in the blowout games where Barkley sits after halftime, who comes in, Kessler or Wittik?
Right now I would say Wittek but I don't think the competition is over by any means.
What do you think about the football team showing up in certain classes in full pads and helmets?
I thought it was great. It showed a side of the players having some fun. The best part was Robert Woods actually answering a question correctly in an organic chemistry class. I wouldn't even know where the organic chemistry classes were held, much less be able to answer a question about it.
lane Kiffin National Championships. the over under is 2. Which will you take?
Real solid question. I'll take the over. There's no doubt in my mind he has the ability, the only hesitation I have is the NFL calling with boatloads full of money as he sees more success at USC.
Thanks everyone for coming. That's all the time we have for today. We'll do this again next week.
