Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks. Big fight weekend with BHop-Dawson 2 and Seth Mitchell-Chazz Witherspoon on HBO, Ismayl Sillakh back in action vs Grachev on ESPN2 tonight and a good ShoBox triplheader tonight with Oosthuizen-Johnson on top. Plus tomorrow, Jhonny Gonzalez-Elio Rojas headlining on Fox Deportes and then Senchenko-Malignaggi on Sunday. And then next week it's Mayweather-Cotto. So there is much to discuss. I have a ton of blogs and news stories from the week, a feature Senchenko-Malignaggi and the Hopkins and Mitchell fights. So let's get to it!

Rick (San Diego)

Dan, if he wins, what are the odds that tomorrow is the end of the road for Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

It would be hard to see BHop going forward at age 47 off a loss. But I also depends on how he would lose. It it's highly competitive and he lost a close decision or a decision in which people thought he was robbed, that could make him consider going on. But I think a loss here and it probably is and should be over for him.

Ryan (OH)

Hey Dan , in your opinion were does tomorrow?s heavyweight fight between Mitchell vs. Whiterspoon rank in the last couples years ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I mean I like the fight but it's nothing "special" to me. Nice test for Mitchell and a career make-or-break for Witherspoon.

Horn (Vegas)

When you have a fight that lacks the appeal that Hopkins/Dawson II does, sometimes it exceeds expectations because no one was expecting much to begin with.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Most definitely. One example I can think of off the top of my head -- folks thought Lennox Lewis-Shannon Briggs was a horrible fight at the time, an absolute mismatch. But it was way more exciting than people thought it would be. Another example is Hopkins-Winky Wright. That fight was crushed ahead of time and it turned out to be a pretty good fight compared to expecations. So, yes, the expectations do impact the final result as far as if a fight was good or not.

Jason (Philly)

Who do u have winning hopkins-dawson? I'll be there, I think B hop takes it in a decision

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

First off, while I am pretty solid with my picks, BHop has confounded me more than anyone. I picked him to lose vs Tito and Pavkik. I did pick him to beat Tarver. I've been all over the map on him. So with no confidence in my official pick, I think Dawson beats him on Saturday. Too much youth and speed.

Michael (New York)

How good does Floyd look in camp right now? I've heard this is the best camp he's had in a while. That's scary.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I've heard from people who have been in the camp and around him that even though Floyd always looks good in training that this time it has been exceptional. I think that he is coming back fairly quickly for him after the Ortiz fight with no 16-month layoff or anything is huge for Floyd.

Mike (DC) [via mobile]

Who is going to headline the GBP Showtime card on June 30 at the verizon center?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Not determined but Gary Russell is supposed to be in one of the televised bouts.

MikeRo72 (Chicago)

Dan, I noticed Urango went through with his comeback fight. Did he clear up that messy situation with his management/promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

If he fought then the answer is no. The promoter has been ignored.

alan (stockton ca)

Dan.Do you have any news on the texas comission about de lara ,kirkland we nding

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Not yet. Leon Margules, the promoter for Carlos Molina, filed the needed paperwork to protest the outcome but Texas has not made a ruling yet.

Bobby (Louisville)

Any word on Erik Morales? seems like there's still some worthwhile exciting matches for him at this stage.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Nothing specific. Erik said after the Garcia fight that he thought he might want one more fight at home in Tijuana. I think he will eventually take that. But you never know. I still want to see him fight JM Marquez.

rocco (pa)

danimal i smell margarito and chavez jr. brewing for september 15th any inside info

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Very good possibility. No secret. Top Rank has talked about it.

SHM (Shirley, NY)

Are you surprised at what appears to be an overwheming consensus that Hopkins quit against Dawson in the first fight? I even saw Teddy Atlas go down that road. I am frankly stunned plus it's not like Dawson is some kind knockout force in the ring. Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I dont know what you mean by consensus. A few people said that but I have not heard any sort of "consensus." I for one do not buy that crap.

Floyd Mayweather (Las Vegas)

I didn't stretch before the chat

Bobby (Louisville)

Hey Dan! Is Marco antonio barrera officially retired? last fight was awhile ago

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

He has not "officially" retired.

Jermain Taylor (?)

WHY AM I YELLING?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I WISH I KNEW!!! MAYBE IT WAS THE KNOCKDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rocco (pa )

so all this chavez jr. martinez is bull cuz arum aint signing that contract i take it

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Chavez and Martinez signed some sort of promise with the wretched WBC to fight in September. It means nothing in the real world. No fighter can sign a binding contract for a fight without the signature of the manager and promoter. Further, there were no terms spelled out in the paper from the wretched WBC other than what the percentage split would be in the event of a purse bid. The "contract" they signed is as phony as a $3 bill and Toe Haye's heavyweight resume.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Mayweather says he views Cotto as an undefeated fighter. Is that how you view him as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

No. He got beat by Pacquiao fair and square, catch weight or not. Mayweather has also fought at a catch weight, the Marquez fight for one, which he did not make weight for.

Joe (Frankfurt)

Love the two big fights in Cancun tomorrow: Jhonny Gonzalez is a terrific offensive fighter that more people should see. Martin Honorio is a great test for Salgado, although I think Salgado takes it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I agree and love that it is live in the US on Fox Deportes as part of the new Golden Boy deal.

Joe (NJ)

Dan, are making the trip to A.C. for the Saturdays fights? If so, you have to check out the newest casino Revel. It's pretty stunning. Check out the view from the top to the bottom floor after you have made it up the 4th or 5th Escalator

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I'll be in AC tomorrow but wont be spending any time checking out new casinos.

Chris (Marlboro, MA)

How good is Ismayl Sillakh and could we see him take on the winner of Hopkins/Dawson or does he get avoided?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Sillakh is a bad ass to me. NO WAY EVER ON EARTH would Hopkins fight him at this point. Means nothing to his legacy and there's no money in it. Dawson? Maybe, especially if/when Sillakh becomes mandatory. Sillakh is very very very dangerous to anyone in the 175 division and you can count me as a fan of his.

Wade (ATL)

Do you think Bute's "unique" training methods for the upcoming Froch bout are worthwhile? Do many fighters do stuff like that?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I think it is worthwhile. It is about being comfortable mentally and getting in tune with what to expect. It actually makes a lot of sense.

Roman (Atlanta)

Dan-Do you think the El Paso "security" concerns will get resolved or will fight end up getting moved to Houston?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I think the fight could stay in El Paso and wind up at the local minor league ballpark, even though it has way less seats than the Sun Bowl.

Berndawg (CHI)

GOT, 1.5 PPV buys for Cotto/Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Certainly reachable and possible.

Duff (Boston, MA)

What are your thoughts about the June 9 undercard now that it's set? I think it's solid, but nothing amazing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Solid, but nothing amazing. Jones-Bailey is a fine fight. No issue. Arce against a nobody does not do much for me although I LOVE Arce, so it's better than nothing. Rigondeaux-Kennedy is a one-sided destruction that is a waste of a PPV spot.

rambo (London)

If bob arum was fifty years younger he would wallop alex arisa

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

LOL!

Michael C (Houston, TX)

Is Gale Von Hoy a judge for tonights FNF??! And if he is, let me apologies on belhaf of the State of Texas in advance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

He is not judging either of the two co-features. As for the rest of the undercard, I'm not sure.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Check out the new blogs and bookmark the link to the blog: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Michael Buffer (MGM)

Your winner by 10th round TKO, still undefeated and new Super Welterweight Champion, Floyd Moneeeeeeeeey Mayweather!

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I can see that.

Miguel (Cali)

Dan, Abner Mares looked impressive in his last fight, even at a higher weight. He's now a two-division champ; is he anywhere on your P4P radar?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I would suggest you check out the new p4p rankings that were published on Wednesday.

John (Richmond, Va)

Notebook?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

No. To answer this again, the notebook has been put to sleep and now everything you would get in the notebook and more is being spread out daily during the week in a series of very regular blogs. Look at the blog box with my photo in it on the boxing page and you will see the five most recent entries. Or click the overall blog link for a page of blog after blog. All the info but just in more pieces.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

My son is 14 months old. When he gets older, I'm going to tell him about how I once went to see a 47-year old defend his lightweight championship in A.C. ...

Van (Phoenix)

What'd you think of Michael Eric Dyson's "interview" with Floyd?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

To be honest, I have not watched it yet. I have it on my DVR and hope I will find some time before I go to Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Joe (Dallas but formerly Albany)

Mikey Faragon fighting in AC this weekend. Go 518!

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

The 518 baby! My hometown!

Tomer (New York, NY)

The whole Chavez Jr.-Lee debacle with the Sun Bowl is pretty bizarre. From what I've been told by people living in El Paso, it's one of the safer cities around, despite being a border town. Why would the University of Texas be opposed to the fight given the existing facts (and the massive evidence to suggest there's no real risk of cartel warfare in the vicinity)?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I have no idea. It is a very strange situation.

Derek (Brooklyn)

D$, your thoughts on Jermaine Taylor? I've always been a fan but I think he's done. I imagine he's being lined up for a big payday and I hope these ppl who r driving this bus will be held accountable if he gets hurt bc a brutal ko in his future is not unforseeable

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I think he's done. He'll beat the Jessie Nicklows and Caleb Truaxes of the world but facing a top contender or champion is a bad idea.

rocco (pa )

whos this guy margarito is fighting can a shot margartio still get past him

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Abel Perry has won several fights in a row and faced some decent guys but is obviously supposed to be a much softer touch than the guys Margarito has been fighting. For a comeback after such a bad beating, it's a reasonable fight for Margarito to see where he is and how he is at middleweight.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, Mares/Moreno seems like a pick'em fight at 122....Who do you lean towards? Do you think we see that fight next for both on showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It's a competitive fight. I think I would have to lean to Moreno right now just based on the overall skills and his long reach.

Gale Van Oy (El Paso)

Dan, I see many 10-8 rounds for Paulie this weekend.

gallegos (Colorado)

Word is that Chavez is dating a former GF of a son of a mexican cartel.. if so wouldn't that be reason enough to not have the fight in a border town with as much violence in those surrounding towns? especially when Chavez and the girl would be targets.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Even if he is dating that person it is a reach to cancel an entire event because of it.

James (Maryland)

What is your current fight of the year candidate? Salido v Lopez? or Alvarado v Herrera?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

They are the top 2 right now but if I had to pick between them it would be Alvarado-Herrera at the moment. But it's only April.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

R.I.P notebook... You will be missed.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

So the notebook has been made champion in recess, and every blog post has been made an interim champion -- for a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

YES!

Richie (Bronx NY)

Better talent Jose Pedraza or Thomas Dulorme?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Both the future of Puerto Rican boxing.

Steve (Hartford)

What's latest on the 7/14 ppv in Cowboys Stadium?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Arum was in NY this week to meet with HBO about what they wanted to do with both July 14 and a possible July 21 date for Donaire but nothing has been settled as far as I know.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Who does Having Tony Weeks as the ref benefit more Mayweather or Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I think Tony Weeks is one of the very best referees in the world. He is a ref who lets guys fight and does not insert himself too much except when really necessary. I think that could be of a slight benefit to Cotto, who will be allowed to be physical with Mayweather on the inside without having a ref jump in every two seconds and call a break. Tony is a fair referee who understands that people are there to watch the boxers not the referee. He'll do a fine job I believe and is worthy of a the high-profile assignment.

El terrible (WTI)

Alvarado would smoke Rios, who I reckon will be tight even at 140.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Cant disagree.

Duff (Boston, MA)

The Michael Eric Dyson interview with Floyd was a joke and a waste of time. No real questions at all.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Like I said, I havent seen it yet but your comments seems to be the norm of what I have heard about it.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Whatup Danito? It's my birthday. Enjoying my day off with the chat wrap! Can a boxing freak get a shout out?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Happy Birthday, Freak.

Ryan (OH)

How were ticket sales for Hopkins vs Dawson?, seems to be one of the more higher profile fights in Atlantic city recently

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

From what the promtoers say, the ticket sales have been excellent and I expect a very good crowd tomorrow night.

Mike (DC) [via mobile]

Thankfully Kenny Bayless got tabbed for Peterson-Khan 2! Should be no whining from the Khan side, win or lose

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Bayless is probably THE BEST referee in the world to me. So it's a million times better than Joe Cooper.

Gerardo (AZ)

re: the expectations of a fight, you didn't have to go that far. Mares - Morel last weekend was a great example of that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Good call. You're right.

James (Maryland)

Is Senchenko v Malignaggi worth the 25 dollars?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Depends on your interest in the fight or fighters or seeing some potential contenders/prospects on the undercard.

David Haye (UK)

I would object to Toe-ny Weeks being my referee

Wade (ATL)

Who has the upper hand in the Vyacheslav Senchenko vs Paulie Malignaggi bout.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Obviously Senchenko because he is at home against a guy with virtually zero power.

Tim (Alexandria)

You've said before that Bayless is number 1 and Smoger is 1A as far as refs go. I take it you put Weeks in that next category?

Andrew (Detroit)

sergio martinez in a recent interview stated manny pacman is a hype job and shouldnt even be in the top p4p conversation. I agree with him. so do alot of other fighters and trainers. whats your take? are you just feeding into the hype job?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I dont agree. Manny has made a historical run and deserves every accolade he has gotten.

Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA)

Dan, what is your opinion on the boxing "State of the Union" address given by Teddy Atlas an Joe Tessitore in the podcast where they called boxing a dying "cult" sport in the US. I disagree. I think it's getting more popular but with a different, younger, smarter crowd in the US

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I didnt listen to it.

Ray ((Villanova))

Danimal,I've watched the first 2 rounds of Hopkins- Dawson I three times. There is no evidence there to suggest Hopkins wanted out of that fight. Dawson had a very low punch output and Hopkins actually outlanded him up to that point. Anyone who thinks he bailed cause he got scared is foolish.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Agreed. I happen to believe BHop was legitimately injured. I was in Hopkins' suite not long after the fight and saw the shoulder with my own eyes and it looked messed up and BHop had it iced and was moving very gingerly. I also saw the hospital report and tweeted photos of it.

Robbie (Southern California)

Even though you're a Yankees fan, because they are close do you plan on getting out to watch the Nationals this season? They are on a roll. Great to see boxing back in DC to add to the growing excitement for sports teams in the area!

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I may go see the Nationals when they play at home against the Yankees in June.

Roberto (Charlotte, NC)

Was watching the Mayweather vs Corrales fight back in 2001. I was looking at the crowd, and not one person was on their phone.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

In 2001 most people did not have cell phones.

Rolando ((NYC))

other than the fight is free on HBO - give me one good reason to watch the the Hopkins fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

That isn't my job. If you dont want to watch cool. If you do, enjoy.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

hype job, robbery, exposed... these terms are overused in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Toetally.

Brian (Providence)

When Gamboa's lawsuit is handled will Salido/Gamboa happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Probably not. I doubt the networks would be interested in a rematch of a first fight that was ok but nothing great.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Did it look like someone glassed B-Hops shoulder?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Not that bad.

Jordan (NM)

Dan what's up big guy.. Just read the Q and A with Sergio and it seems like he is a little jealous / harsh regarding his opinion of Manny Pacquiao.. What are your thoughts on him referring to Pacquiao as a "lie" and not fighting p4p fighters lately ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I think Sergio is probably just frustrated because he cant get the fight.

Michael C (Houston, TX)

Dirrell vs some tomato can for Ward's title?!? For shame....

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Wretched WBC for you. #wbcisdisgusting

Dan (NJ)

Witherspoon seems like a live underdog to me...what percent chance would you give Chazz of pulling the upset?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I like Mitchell to win the fight, probably by knockout, but Witherspoon will definitely come to fight and has some pop, so an upset would not entirely shock me.

Matt (PA)

How ironic that you used a toe joke as an answer to overused terms in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

It was on purpose you goof.

lj (nj)

Dan, I'm a big Lucas Matthysse fan. If he get's past Soto in what should be a good fight, will he become a mandatory for a title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Unfortunately, I think the fight is being lined up to be for a wretched WBC interim title.

Christopher Molloy (Dublin)

What do you make of Andy Lee's chances against chavez jr?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Very legit chance to win. Andy is taller, a southpaw, very experienced as a pro and amateur and has a great trainer. If he beats Chavez I will not be surprised.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

I'm glad Jim Lampley is finally getting his own boxing show on HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

So am I.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

It must be hard to spell "Vyacheslav."

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

It is. But I added it to my computer's personalized dictionary so now my spell check recognizes is.

rambo (london)

saw darren barker on the street the other day, walking on crutches. never asked him, but has he had an accident - looked bad.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Not sure. Hopefully, it's not his #toe

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, I think Dawson wins saturday but B-Hop will be highly motivated, by a slice of cheesecake after the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

LOL. There you go: http://twitpic.com/50yqqh

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

And this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/58/bernard-hopkins-savors-victory-sweet-treat-boxing

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Any chance we ever see Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz fight again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He's still young so you never know but Juan is retired at this point and has other business interests, like his construction company, that seem to be keeping him busy.

Berndawg (CHI)

GOT...can I just say that I am drowning this week in your blogs, tweets and news stories...please continue with the waterfall :)

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Yes sir.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

With BHop fighting tomorrow, here's my column from after he beat Pascal to become the oldest fighter to win a world title. It was a very memorable night in Montreal: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/58/bernard-hopkins-savors-victory-sweet-treat-boxing

Anthony (PA)

Dan, do you foresee a day when Atlantic City will host a major fight (ie Holyfield Foreman) again? Or is it more of an afterthought these days?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

AC is always possible fight a big fight, especially when it makes sense on the East Coast.

moi (dominguez)

have heard of the opponents lined up for Broner, including Escobedo however i think Diego Magdaleno would be a terrific fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

It would be fine but good luck seeing it made since Broner is with GB and Diego is with TR.

J (DC)

Will you be watching the shobox and fnf cards tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Of course.

Patrick (Boynton)

Dan you should have a PPV chat one friday....During that chat you could show all the freaks the crazy vulgars posts and questions you get on a regular basis.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

LOL!! Dont think ESPN would go for that.

Isai (OKC)

What's the word on Lara vs Vanes? Will Schaefer/Dubeof cross the aisle to make a deal?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Dont hold your breath for that fight.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

DTM, is there a date set for Lampley's first show?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Yes, May 12.

Ray (Monterey, CA)

Dude, thanks for refusing to answer any of my questions...

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

You're welcome.

John (Philadelphia)

Why has Don King fallen from relevance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Doesnt have the horses anymore, has not changed with the times with regard to the networks, technology (like the Internet) and I also think he's maybe a little bored. So his once vast stable of top fighters is now little more than a few guys nobody cares about.

Andrew (Detroit)

Dan,I would destroy you in any debate. you clearly make no sense in any of your responses. I wish i had 10 minutes with you to shut you the hell up. your a fat boy who never stepped in the ring, stop taking shots at fighters every chance you get you fat pig.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Somebody needs a hug. Have a great weekend. I know I will.

Joe (PA)

Who is calling the fights for HBO tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Lampley, Max and Emanuel.

Wade (ATL)

Hahahahahaaha, I am sooooooo glad you post that garbage. Hillarious

hall (texas)

who's more boring to watch, jonathon banks or john ruiz

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Ruiz.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

Poor Andrew! Maybe he'll find someone to debate

Kieran (Alexandria)

Andrew better hope his mom doesn't find him using her computer in the basement again.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Hbo is showing cotto vs mosley. Reminds me a day when GB and top rank made fights. Will there ever be peace?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Not any time soon it does not appear.

JonG (Queens)

Think its safe to say Andrew is one of the dudes from the basement who comes here weekly to spend time bashing the guy running the chat.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

Andrew...Times must be tough in Detroit. Such anger...

Tomer (New York, NY)

Internet tough guys are always the best.

Demetrius Cincinnati [via mobile]

I think Andrew takes this just a lil 2 personal

Richie (Bronx NY)

I would say Ban Andrew but he is too funny...

toldrikes (BH)

I guess roach is not going to be with Snechenko in the corner this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

He trained him for the fight but will not be in the corner.

Pete (NJ)

Are you going to be watching Extreme Rules on Sunday? You think Brock gets a clean win over Cena?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I think I probably will order the PPV.

FrankFletcherJr (NY,NY)

Will ESPN produce more Ringsides- Tommy Hearns needs one, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Good question. I'm not sure but I would love to see Ringside shows on those guys.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Maybe Andrew needs his hair brushed...

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

LOL!!! Pay the man, Shirley!

Ray (Villanova)

Dan,It's a shame you get bothered by that garbage. I think you are a great reporter and am grateful for your diligent work.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I wasn't bothered. I was rather amused actually.

Fred (Montreal)

Hi Dan , any news on when Pier OLivier (Apou) Cote will fight ? he should be ok by now with the injury he had .

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

He is supposed to be on the Bute-Froch undercard on May 26.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, did you here that Salido is calling out Broner, and said once he beats him, he wants Broners dad to brush his hair? Classic

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I didnt hear it, I am the one who wrote it. Check this blog out with some classic quotes from Salido's manager: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1016/broner-salido-makes-sense

Hater (I here for the hate)

Just wanted to let you know I dont agree with any of your opinions therefore you are dumb and if I was the espn boxing writer everyone would agree with everything I said and would love my 3 hr chat every Friday

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Epic.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

I know Mosley has never been stopped but I saw that the canelo/mosley fight is at +220 or something to go UNDER 9.5rds. I think that's a virtual lock. Shane wanted to quit against manny but Nazir wouldn't let him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I think a Canelo stoppage win a a very good possibility.

Rick (Marina, ca)

I am tired of HBO buying these sorry fights with Russel Jr and Bronner fighting no name waiters. start putting them in the ring with quality opponents atleast.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I dont disagree but you can add Showtime to the list too since it is the one now buying Russell against nobodies.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Here's my Hopkins-Dawson feature: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/7862138/bernard-hopkins-chad-dawson-ii-settle-score

Roy (Reno)

Why is HBO giving Broner the Berto treatment? I thought this type of nonsense was supposed to end when they fired ROss?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I have no idea. Dont get me wrong -- I want to see Broner on TV. I want to see his brush. I think he is a potential future star. BUT -- I want to see him in with a guy with at least a CHANCE to win or make it interesting, not a series of hobos with no shot.

Roy (Reno)

Any word on Andre Ward and who he might be fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Nothing set yet. I spoke with Andre yesterday. When I get a little time I will put together a blog on some of what he was saying, but I dont think we will see him fighting until the fall.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

I chuckled when you wrote that Azteca America is "supposed" to show the Margarito fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Exactly. They are so screwed up and Top Rank has no clue what Azteca is doing with its shows. It's really a step down from Fox Deportes, which was very reliable.

José (San Juan, PR)

What do you think of Pedro Diaz, Cotto's trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Pedro seems like a really good, no-nonsense guy who is dedicated to his craft. He has a pretty low key personality, which matches Cotto's. They seem like a good team and obviously Cotto fought well under Diaz's direction in the Margarito rematch. Diaz is also very experienced from his days with the Cuban amateur program.

rick (grand rapids)

how much does Mosely have left?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Money or ability? :)

Vinnie (NYC)

What are you expecting out of Pavlik vs. Sigmon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

A Pavlik KO win.

Jim (PA)

Who would have won a light heavyweight fight between Michael Spinks and Bernard Hopkins?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

That is a very interesting fight but I think at light heavy, I'd probably have to go with Spinks, who could box and was also a great puncher. BHop's best mythical matchups are as a middleweight.

toldrikes (BH)

Just rememebered somoething to ask, forgot last week. Bradley is on a vegan diet? Is this true? Seems silly for a athlete but I don't understand it really.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Bradley eats a vegan diet when he is training. I do not believe he is vegan year-round, although I could be wrong about that.

corey (westwick)

does mosley's stock drop if he gets knocked out or has what he already done still make him a first ballot hall of famer

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Mosley's legacy is what it is. And I am not sure he is a first-ballot guy because of the steroid situation.

Vinnie (NYC)

Hey Dan, why have the Integrated Sports PPV's all been international this year? Is there a method to the madness?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Integrated often picks up overseas fights to make them available to the US market by making a deal with the foreign promoter. They have not all been international. Integrated also distributed a small PPV from AC recently involving heavyweight Mariusz Wach.

Dan Rafael

Dominique (Quebec)

You know what I think might help our friend Andrew? A hug from the Love Child.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

darryl p (indianapolis)

hey dan, how did the top rank and golden boy beef start?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Basically when Oscar left Arum to start Golden Boy that got things off to a bad start but the biggest issue was the fight over the Pacquiao contract after he signed with both companies.

Yannick (BC)

Are there any names on who is Kell Brook fighting next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Not yet. I checked in with Eddie Hearn about that just yesterday and still no opponent yet for July 7.

Ace (Sactown)

do you give Mosley get credit for beating DLH? He was juicing... no way should he get credit in my opinion

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

I dont think he was juicing for the first fight and he gets full credit. He was for the second fight and even on the juice I thought he lost to Oscar, who also knocked out Fernando Vargas, who flunked the steroid test after the fight.

Michael C (Houston, TX)

Didn't Pac also accept a duffle bag full of cash from one of the promoters (GBP as I recall)? Pac is not innocent in all of this.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

You're right. Manny is absolutely not innocent I once wrote a column saying exactly that.

Justin (Seattle)

DTM, here it is, a "Brush My Hair," fight, Salido v. Broner, loser MUST brush the hair of the winner in the ring after the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

AWESOME.

Vinnie (NYC)

How do you feel about the Golden Gloves moving to Brooklyn? Seems sacrilege to not have it at MSG

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

It's business.

Jim (Santa Monica)

Sillakh gets the hype today, but Fortuna vs. Evans is a good matchup between two good prospects. Now, if only there were a premium network that tried to put two good prospects together...

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Agreed, the ESPN2 opener is also an excellent matchup. We dont know this for certain but I think, as do the ESPN2 programming folks and promoter Square Ring, that this is the first time in FNF history that the two main fights feature all four fighters being undefeated.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Every time Broner fights, instead of putting his championship belt on the line they should fight for his brush.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Not bad.

Aaron (MA)

with news of GBP reaching a deal with Fox Deportes, does Top Rank or any other promoter have any TV deals in the works that you know of?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Top Rank has been in talks for quite some time with Spike about something but it has been pushed back multiple times as far as I know. First there was supposed to be something a few months ago, then April and now pushed back again, so who knows if it will get done?

FrankFletcherJr (NY,NY)

Any chance Tavoris Cloud fights Shumenov?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Not next. Cloud likely will fight Pascal in Canada either July 7 or Aug 11 from what Showtime tells me. They're working to finalize that. I spoke to Yvon Michel yesterday and he told me there's a chance Adonis Stevenson would open the Showtime telecast and I know Showtime likes that idea very much. They've even talked to Glen Johnson about a possible fight with Stevenson.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Forbes stepping in for gomez in the vargas fight. BORING! I actually fell asleep during the oscar vs forbes fight. Only fight I've ever fallen asleep to

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Matchmaking is tough. GB was between a rock and a hard place on the fight. Gomez fell out and to find a qualified guy on short notice to go on a PPV is hard. I do not like the fight AT ALL but I am not going to punish GB about it because there was not much of a choice and they did the best they could under the circumstances.

hectorconga (NYC)

i dont know why people get so mad...i ask tons of questions...sometimes you answer sometimes you dont...its not like my question is the only one coming through lol

FrankFletcherJr (NY,NY)

WHat about HBO legendary nights? Where are the new shows?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

There aren't any right now but I wish they would make more. I'd like to see them sacrifice a fight or two or a 24/7 series or two or whatever to make a new batch of the shows.

Rick (Marina, ca)

Is Margarito one of the biggest falls frome grace in the sport ? Went from his biggest win vs Cotto and just free falled after that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes.

jcs (edmonton)

aside from Alfonso Gomez and Bundrage, are any other of the Contenders still doing anything significant that you are aware of?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Troy Ross is still a quality cruiserweight if he would be a little more active. Sergio Mora had a decent run although it's basically over. Ryan Coyne is still looking for a bigger fight and is a crowd-pleasing guy.

Rick (Marina, ca)

is Mickey Garcia vs Caballero official

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Not yet. The sides still have time to make a deal and then if they dont there will be a purse bid.

Miguel (Cali)

I miss Tuesday Night Fights on USA

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Me too.

jcs (edmonton)

how's Brian Kenny doing these days? liking his new gig? does he attend the fights?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

BK was the blow-by-blow announcer for the Rios-Abril Top Rank PPV card a couple of weeks ago.

Ryan (OH)

Dan would you say Top Rank has taken a hit as of late,? with Junama being suspended, Rios and Donaire in very lackluster performances, also with Cotto leaving for golden boy and all the issues with an Margarito and Pavlik

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Those are things that certainly dont help but they still have some quality fighters and a team that really knows what it is doing. The fighters come and go but the foundation is there and the experience in the business is there. Everything goes in cycles.

Steve (NYC)

I miss when Ray Leonard and George Foreman were commentators on HBO.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Ray will be back behind the mic at least for one night. With Freddie Raoch getting Manny ready for June 9 he won't be able to make the trip to the UK to call Bute-Froch on Epix. So Bruce Beck and I will call the fight in Nortingham with Ray Leonard.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

Dan, I don't understand your haters. They can't stand you or your opinions. Yet they take the time to read your notebooks, articles, blogs, attend your weekly chats, follow you on Twitter & Facebook, and watch your Ringtone segments and whenever you appear on SportsCenter. Yeah Dan, you're real idiot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

LOL. Cant please everyone.

Erik (Tampa, FL)

is there a rematch clause for Mayweather-Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I am honestly not sure.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Would you consider Mayweather/Corrales Mayweather's greatest performance?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Floyd has a lot of impressive ones but, yes, I have always thought of that one as his most impressive.

Richie (Bronx NY)

who was your favorite fighter to watch during your younger days?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

I liked Ray Leonard, Mancini, Arguello. I was in high school when Tyson came around and loved him too.

jcs (edmonton)

just to go back to an earlier comment - it upsets me that people feel the need to play devil's advocate, even when there is no basis for doing so. to call Manny a Hype-job is one of the most ridiculous thing I have heard from a so-called boxing fan.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Agreed. Just stupidity.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

I hate that relatively new feature that HBO has wherethey interview a trainer in the middle of a fight. It's a distraction. What are your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

If the trainer is OK with it why not?

Mikero72 (Chicago)

Set your DVR freaks: tonight HBO will reair Corrales-Mayweather and Cotto-Mosley.

Tom (NJ)

Dan, of the fighters that were "before your time," who would you have most liked to see in person?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Defintely Sugar Ray Robinson. I'd also say Jack Johnson, Dempsey, Louis -- the great heavyweights. I'd also have to say guys from the old days like Harry Greb or Henry Armstrong.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Looking forward to sugar calling the fight with you on epix. Hearing him call a fight reminds me of my childhood and some of my earliest boxing memories

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Me too, which is why it will odd, but cool, to call a fight with him.

Bing (Banishment)

Is it true that Floyd and 50 sleep together?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny this.

Lowcity (Detroit MI) [via mobile]

Hey Dan if mayweather win do you think he stay at 154 or go back to 147

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I think he will probably go back to 147 like he did after the Oscar fight. But if there is a fight for him that makes sense obviously he would go fight at 154 again. His biggest fights though, aside from Martinez, which I dont think will happen, are at 147.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Fill in the blank. Hardwork!!!! ______ !!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Chatting?

Jake (utah)

Watched a couple videos on Senchenko last night. Not a great jab and he seems slower than paulie. I think Paul could break him down and get a late TKO.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

I'd be surprised by a KO and I actually think Senchenko's jab is very solid.

Nick (Raleigh)

Floyd and 50 only sleep together if they can share a mink blanket.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

LOL!! OMG.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Do you think money will keep his word and bow out when he is 37?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

No.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - who do you like in the first unification fight, involving two Japanese titleholders?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I like Ioka to win.

C. Butler (Los Angeles)

How did you score the Broner / Ponce De Leon fight? I definitely thought he Broner loss. As did Mayweather vs. Castillo.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

I thought Broner edged it out but looked bad.

corey (westwick)

Dan do you like always going to the same places to cover boxing? or do you wish it was alittle more spread out and besides the major states for boxing what is some of your other favorite spots to go cover the sport

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I think I have a good mix. I have been many times to places like MGM, Mandalay Bay, MSG, Atlantic City, etc.. so those places feel like home. But I also get to spread it around and go to new places too. Like I went to Montreal last year to cover Hopkins-Pascal 2, my first time doing a fight there. I'm going to England in a few weeks. Been in all kinds of places I'd never otherwise have gone too for boxing, which is nice -- like San Antonio for the first time in February. So it's a good mix.

Nick (Clothier)

How about a Mitchell vs Chazz pick, ya know Wlad has mentioned Seth as a possible US opponent.

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

I'm going with Mitchell via KO.

Bryon (Chicago)

Can't believe Hopkins is something like a 3:1 dog...will the public never learn to not doubt this guy?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

I was a little surprised the oddds were that much.

C. Butler (Los Angeles)

Are you attending Showtime's June 2nd card?

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Have you ever visited or done and interview in the home of a fighter? If so, what one was the most memorable crib?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Yes. Going to Tyson's old mansion in Vegas was quite an experience. I was there with a few other writers visiting Tyson and he tried to teach us how to roll joints. It was a pretty memorable experience that trip.

Mike (Los Angeles)

How long does Floyd serve in prison? Will he be back in time for a possible fight on Sept. 17th?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

His sentence is 87 days (with three more months suspended). So he could serve less than 87 with good behavior and maybe be away for about 2 months. Or, if something happened while is away, he could serve the full 87. And if there is a more significant problem he could have to serve out the suspended part of the sentence and wind up doing the full six months. Most likely, Floyd will behave and be out several weeks short of the 87 days.

julio (dfw)

What is the news on Jose Benavidez? Still developing? When can we realistically see him as a real contender?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

He's supposed to fight May 26 under Margarito. He's had hand injuries and is still developing so it probably will be awhile.

Anthony (Bronx, NY)

You got blazed with Tyson???!!! Dan you live the dream!

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

LOL. No, we didn't actually smoke with him.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Speaking of young prospects, anything regarding Frankie Gomez? Any word if his training habits have improved?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

He's had legal issues. Kid has been a huge bust so far.

Isaac (New York) [via mobile]

Hey Dan, do u think we will see a Chavez Jr vs Canelo Alvarez fight in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I do not think that fight will EVER happen.

Wade (ATL)

Hahahahahaha, yes! Tyson is my new favorite of all time ever. He was number 2 before that statement.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

to this day, do you still know how to roll a joint?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Thanks to Iron Mike, I have a wonderful yet useless skill.

Matt (Naperville, IL)

Just a heads up, there's an error in your Oosthuizen article. He fought Pryor Jr. in 2011, not 2001 lol

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

LOL, a typo. Thanks for pointing it out. I sent in a correction to the office.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

WBC's actions regarding Andre Ward's 168 lb. belt = disgusting

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

#wbcisdisgusting

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Ronald Hearns has always been chinny, but were you shocked at how fast he crumbled against Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

No. I picked it.

bill (carmel, ny)

if you ever have an actual bbq that rolling skill may come in handy

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

The BBQ is coming soon!!

corey (westwick)

thats another classic story you have just when i thought the Don king calling you when he was showering was my fav the Tyson story is now my favorite

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Those are two good ones.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

DTM what fighter would you most like to see retire?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Roy Jones.

Chris (Chatsworth)

Showtime showing tweets from viewers during fights most annoying "improvement" to a broadcast....

Dan Rafael
  (2:17 PM)

I do not like that aspect of the Showtime broadcast. Let me be more specific: I DESPISE IT.

bill (carmel, ny)

YES. also despise showtime twitter feeds. i'll go on twitter if i want to see what joe 6 pack thinks.

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Exactly.

Ethan (NY)

Dan, what did you think of "Portrait of a Fighter" Canelo on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

I watched it and I thought it was terrible. HBO is almost always outstanding but this was like, what the hell am I watching? Just was brutal to watch and it was all subtitled. I actually turned it off near the end of it.

Chris (Seattle)

One day, I hope Gale Van Hoy retires and is hired on by Showtime or HBO as their "unofficial absurd scorer"

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Aido (Dublin)

To the guy referring to Darren Barker on crutches, he had a hip operation recently

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Ahh. Well hopefully he is OK and I am glad it wasn't his #toe.

bill (carmel, ny)

is there any plan for hbo to replay alvarado vs. herrera? they replayed a bunch of showcase fights on latino but bypassed FOY candidate

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Not that I am aware of. It would be nice if HBO Latino did replay it though. Was a sensational fight.

Anthony (san diego)

Who puts on better undercards...Top Rank or GB??

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

I would say they have both had their share of good ones of one ones that are no so good. I dont think there is much difference overall.

Ethan (NY)

If Bhop wins by UD, does he enter top 10 P4P?

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Ummm, have you looked at my top 10?

Paul (Portland, OR)

Which undercard do you like more, May 5th or June 9th?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of either.

clay (chattanooga)

anymore news on Tavoris Cloud's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

He has signed to fight Pascal and Showtime is trying to finalize the deal. If it is finalized they will fight either July 7 or Aug 11.

Anthony (san diego)

Whats up with the "CHEEOOOWWWW" thing at the end of every tweet to ODLH??

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Cheoowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Jake (Nevada)

I like the effort by fighters like Steve Cunningham, Hank Lundy and others using Twitter as a method to make fights happen. Cunningham-Tarver woulda been great when Cunningham had the Ring crown, but it's still a pretty interesting fight between two American cruisers. Has there ever been a fight made directly as a reult of a Twitter number before that you know of.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

Sergio Martinez-Darren Barker was made thanks to Twitter.

hectorconga (NYC)

I miss the boxing notebook...

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

Everything in the notebook still winds up on the boxing page. Just keep checking the blog. Use this link: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Just for the Fight Freaks, here are the officials for Saturday night: Hopkins-Dawson: Referee Ed Cotton, Judges Luis Rivera, Richard Flaherty and Steve Weisfeld. Witherspoon-Mitchell: Referee Randy Neumann, Judges John Stewart, Waleska Roldan and Alan Rubenstein.

Geoff (NYC)

DTM, very long time my friend, too long in fact, anyway...who is you pick on Saturday: Paulie or Senchenko?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Senchenko W12.

Anthony (Houston)

I just remember Hopkins-Winky being called "Coming to Fight", and thought, that's a bad sign.

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

They named it that as a reaction to the negativity about the fight because of the fact that BHop and Winky were both guys who were basically counter punchers who typically made less than exciting fights.

Billy (TX)

Can you explain why the WBC stripped Andre Ward of his title?

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Can you explain why poop smells bad?

Jon (Spring, TX)

Dan, Went to the fights at the Beau Rivage last weekend. It's a great venue for boxing - all the seats are good

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Ive never been there but have always heard it was a good spot for fights.

Mike (DC) [via mobile]

Is Cloud-Pascal a done deal?! Bombs away!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

The fight is made but the TV deal is not concluded and the fight actually taking place depends on the TV deal being finished. I think it will get done.

Anthony (san diego)

Whats ur schedule like for the Froch/Bute fight...do you fly there the day b4 the flight watch the fight then come home (straight business)...or spend a couple days and take in the sights??

Dan Rafael
  (2:38 PM)

I will leave Wednesday night of fight week and arrive in the UK Thursday morning and return to Washington on Sunday. It's business but I will try to see some stuff while I'm over there and enjoy myself.

Jason (Michigan)

DTM, Is it me or 24/7 has been very boring?

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn.

Chris (Tempe)

Dan, Hopkins-Dawson is not being shown live on HBO Pacific. I had thought only BAD cards were delayed but WCB cards were shown live to both coasts?

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

I knew this would come up. WCB is live on both coasts. Here is the explantion from HBO, which I asked for: The vast majority of subscribers in the PT zone receive the multi-plex of channels, including HBO East and HBO West. Programming the WCB event at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT enables West Coast subscribers to watch live at 7:15 on the HBO East feed and/or in prime time locally at 10:15 on HBO West.Eastern subscribers get a bonus airing, too. They can watch the fights live at 10:15 on HBO East or at 1:15 a.m. when the HBO West feed of the doubleheader is being shown. It all adds up to more viewing options for boxing fans to consume the programming on fight night.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

AC newspaper reported that 1300 extra seats were made available for the Hopkins fight

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

Correct. GB announced that recently.

Thomas (Chicago)

DTM, Did you agree with your Giants drafting David Wilson?

Dan Rafael
  (2:42 PM)

GMen need a running back but I thought they'd try to go for a power back not a short, speed guy with fumble issues. Wilson seemed like a bit of a stretch for the first round from what I have been reading but I hope he's good. They also need offensive linemen and linebackers, so hopefully those needs are addressed today.

Roman (Atlanta)

In case you were wondering why poop stinks: Poop stinks as a result of the products of bacterial action. Bacteria produce smelly, sulfur-rich organic compounds such as indole, skatole, and mercaptans, and the inorganic gas hydrogen sulfide. These are the same compounds that give farts their odor.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Thank you. I think.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Am I crazy thinking mayweather cotto has potential to be an entertaining fight. Floyd has a tendency to be pushed around and cotto is certainly capable of shoving floyd around.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Of course it does.

Pepe (Iowa)

Do you think Margarito would have beaten Mayweather back in 2008?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

No, which is why it was surprising Mayweather turned down the fight at that time. That was more of his beef with TR though.

Jon (Spring, TX)

Dan, Do you think the Lara-Hearns fight should have been stopped after the 2nd knockdown? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

No, I was OK with it continuing how it did.

Brady (Golden Valley, MN)

Did Caleb Traux do well enough to get another date on ShoBox?

Isaac (New York) [via mobile]

Now that Juan Manuel Lopez has lost 2 fights in a row, do u think a fight with Lopez vs Gamboa is still interesting or even possible?

Dan Rafael
  (2:46 PM)

That fight is so far from happening it's not even worth discussing. Lopez is suspended right now and Gamboa is on ice facing a breach of contract lawsuit.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Thanks for chatting today Fight Freaks! Make sure to check out all the new content on the home page and follow me on Twitter or Facebook for updates. I'll be in AC tomorrow for the Hopkins-Dawson card and will tweet updates during the card. Talk to you next week from Las Vegas, where I'll be for Mayweather-Cotto. Have a great weekend. Peace.
