The Friday Chat keeps rolling along. Lots has happened since Jon Jones bashed up Rashad Evans at UFC 145. Chael/Sonnen is migrating to Vegas...Overeem out nine months, so UFC 146 becomes a shake-n-bake card...and Dan Henderson is already coiling his right hand hoping that Jon Jones chin is ready for business. Andrew Luck is a Colt, Morris Claiborne, who ducked the Wonderlic, is a Cowboy. What you got? Let's get this thing rolling.
Who is Aldo fighting, and is it going to be in Brazil at UFC 147?
It looks like the UFC is trying to solidify a match between Erik Kock and Aldo, and that they have UFC 147 circled. Aldo was supposed to be on the Calgary card. But as of late (and with Sonnen/Silva moving to Vegas), the UFC knows what to do in a scramble.
Jim Miller winning by decision is -110. That is stealing money, no?
I can't believe the line is that close. That's the exact scenario I see playing out. Rush to your bookie, Rich. Rake the money.
Aoki getting smashed proves to me that Melendez is overrated. That was his only decent win he's had since his last loss. No way that he has proved he belongs on any p4p list. Its crazy to me. Im really hoping Josh Thompson helps me prove this point.
I've heard this a little bit, and it's getting hard to argue. Melendez's best win of late has been against Aoki, who didn't look too good against Alvarez. Wish they could have put Alvarez/Melendez together back in the day. I think Melendez (and any big name fighting outside the UFC) will be looked at as at least slightly overrated until they fight those name brands.
One other thing on that, Tyler...the Japanese really have a hard time fighting on this continent. I am going to have to look at some records on North American soil for Japanese fighters. I know it's not too good.
Buy or sell Hector Lombard fighting for the UFC belt in 2012.
I will sell that. I think they will stick Lombard against somebody like Brian Stann to get started, and if he gets by Stann he'll still have another hurdle before a title shot.
Any chance we'll get to see Dos Santos grown game when he faces Mir? That is if Mir can get it to the ground....
If there's a banana peel on the cage floor, maybe. But I doubt it. Junior couldn't be bothered to go to the ground with the likes of Cain Velasquez or Shane Carwin, so don't anticipate it with Mir. And given how Mir has looked on the feet at times (particularly against Big Nog), that's not a great looking match-up.
Do you give Dan Henderson a snowball's chance in hell against JBJ?
I think Henderson has the advantage of having seen so many other guys get clobbered. He's wily, so many he can game plan to get inside and do some work. I think his greatest chance is to land that right hand. Obviously if he could get things to the floor maybe we'd learn somethings about Jones on his back (but that's been no easy feat).
Now that Lombard is in the UFC, how soon till we see him fight? Would love to see a Stann/Lombard match...
I'd assume that's the fight they are putting together. They re-introduced Jorge Santiago to the UFC against stann, and the timing is right for Stann/Lombard. I would think this summer. Possibly UFC 150?
Is it fair to say after Chandler getting drafted in the first round of the NFL draft that the Jones' are the most athletic family in the world?
I don't know every family out there, but the Jones' family is turning out to be special. Trying to think of families that could keep up with the Jones's athletically. Who's out there?
I turned auto-update on a while ago. Is it still acting up?
With all the sleezy things Reem did before eventually getting popped and after getting popped, do you think the NSAC went too easy on him? 9 months isn't long. He'll be fighting on the NYE card.
I think the NSAC went very light on him. And when you think of the defense (which I won't get into her), it seems like the lightest tap on the wrist possible.
You think Edgar would still get an immediate shot at the Featherweight title, should he lose to Bendo again and make the move to 145?
It's a little trickier if he loses again to Bendo. Then you've got a guy with a two-fight losing streak. I think at that point he'd be in a No. 1 contender's match at feather, but I suppose they could still justify giving him an immediate shot at Aldo.
Why is everyone so stoked for Lombard-Stann? Stann is 3rd tier, 1-dimensional and "Lightning" will be picking bits of his jaw out of his gloves for days.
Ash is a Lombard man. I think that it's more about timing than anything. Most of the middleweight top ten types have fights booked. Stann is coming off a nice win and would be available. There's also Jake Shields, who is moving back to middleweight. Or...Ed Herman. But if you don't like Lombard against Stann, you probably don't like Herman versus Lombard.
Mir also got smashed by Carwin. I like Mir but this doesn't look good.
Agree. Bleak is the word. It looks bleak.
Ravens or Pats, who does bones jones root for?
I guess he pulls for both until they play each other. Nice dilemma to find himself in.
Who are you taking in the Miller/Diaz fight? This one seems like a coin flip for me.
It's a tough fight to call, but I am leaning towards Miller in the typical, grind-it-out blue collar decision. I think he'll hold up in the scrambles and find himself in top position doing damage. I can't foresee him standing in the way of 200+ shots like Cerrone did.
Charlie, enjoying the Friday chat. Was wondering if Evans and Jones squashed their beef after the fight? Haven't heard anything about it.
No, not really. They turned it down to a low heat for now, and sort of left things there. On MMA Live this week Jones said that Rashad's "in his prayers," but that he wouldn't reach out. Sounds like there's still some tundra between them.
Who's next for Rory McDonald? He looked amazing again, how close is he to a title shot?
MacDonald looked great in the fight with Mills, and let's be honest -- Mills was nothing more than a showcase of the young Canadian (even if we were being told he was extremely underrated). Next up for Rory should be the winner of Hendricks/Koscheck. With all the congestion at the top of welterweight, whoever wins will have to fight again anyway.
The Williams sisters!
True. They are an athletic family.
Whats next for Rothwell?
That was a pretty intense knockout of Schaub, and Rothwell looked in better shape and focused heading in. My guess is he has to wait for UFC 146 to play out to find out what happens with the heavyweight division to find out who's next.
Any chance we could see a Gustaffson-Rampage? I know the coming off a loss-win thing is in the way, but the matchup is intriguing.
I doubt it. Rampage has a fight with Mauricio Rua lined up (tentatively), and he is trying is hardest to get fired before then. Gusty will probably get a guy like Bader next.
Is auto update on? I have turned it back off and on...should be working.
Hey Chuck, thanks for chatting. So how do you think Lombard will do in the UFC? If you watch is Bellator fights, the guy looks like a killer, even though the competition is much less. You think he will get a shot at Silva (or whoever the champ is)?
I'm hesitant to say he's going to run through the field of 185 en-route to Silva, but he does have have explosive striking. He's 34, so the sooner he gets the shot (from his perspective) the better. I think he'll fight Stann, and if he wins there he'll be a win away from the title. So many beasts out there who'd love to put him on his back though and render the last five years moot.
Do you think Fedor Emelianenko is the greatest heavyweight ever?
Right now? Yes. Nobody in that division, in any promotion, had the sustained success he did. The UFC heavyweight belt changes hands frequently.
Barboza vs Dunham has to be the most exciting fight that's not getting that much attention. Can't see anyway that fight is anything but fantastic.
Completely agree. And it's on the prelims, man. Barboza scored what I think is the knockout of the year (so far) against Etim. And he's stuck below a pile of heavyweights.
Chuck, who do you see Jon Jones fighting if he beats Hendo? There seems to be a dropoff in talent level if you exclude guys JBJ already beat in the LHW division.
A lot of would-be matchmakers are sort of basting Gustafsson and getting him all set up for a clash with Jones. That might be the next guy in line. But in my mind, if Jones wrecks Henderson like he has everybody else, he might bolt to heavyweight by the end of 2012.
If/when Melendez moves to UFC who would you pair him with? Me thinks someone like Guillard would be a nice fight.
That fight as of maybe seven or eight months ago would have been a monstrous pairing. Guillard needs to rediscover his winning ways, but it'd still be explosive (so long as Melendez promises not to try any of that jiu-jitsu). I'd like to see Melendez and Edgar or El Nino and Guida.
gun to you head: who beats Bones first?
It's be a heavyweight, and I'd say JDS. I am waiting for the first fighter to at least expose a small vulnerability in Jones. Just something.
DaAshMan should know that 3rd tier UFC fighters are still better than fighters from other organizations. Why? Because they're in the UFC, that's why!
Uh-oh, Ash. Here we go. I will say that Jesse Taylor and Trevor Prangley don't hold the same appeal as Mark Munoz and Rousimar Palhares.
So all that security and they couldn't protect Chael from a shock pen prank?
That did seem rather like a lot of security for a quick trip into Brazil. I doubt most people walking around Rio have any clue who Sonnen is. But precautions are precautions. I wish I'd seen the shock pen prank. That had to be high comedy. Footage?
How scarred are you from that Ben Askren fight? I don't know about you, but I have no interest in watching him again.
I never had too many delusions that Askren and Douglas Lima would out on a barn-burner, so I went in with low expectations. Askren's striking isn't too fun to watch either. Duke Roufus has his hands full there.
When will Schaub rematch the Invisible Man? I can't think about that without laughing. The bar I was at enjoyed it.
I wasn't at the Atlanta card, but some of my colleagues told me that the place erupted in laughter when they showed the replay on the jumbo. A bit of unintentional comedy. Remember when Fitch tried to wrestle Mazzagatti?
Stann, Munoz, Palhares, Belfort have beaten 1 ranked top-10 fighter COMBINED over their careers (Munoz beat Demian Maia). Rick drinks too much Zuffa Kool Aid.
Whats next for The Mauler? I would like to see him fight Machida but Bader seems more likely
I think it'll be somebody like Bader, who in a very similar place rankings-wise. I wouldn't mind seeing Machida/Gusty, either. Hard to dock Machida for losing to Jones. Machida seems to be in a perpetual matchmaking hell, honestly. Never has the right scheduling.
Why is JDS not being marketed/hyped like Jones? Bad English? The guy is a killer at the premier weight. Seems like he should be getting more attention.
Totally agree. The language might play a role, but his English isn't horrible. I did an hour-long interview with him for a magazine once and he was fine. I think the UFC will be behind him in May, and the Overeem stuff has sort of thwarted their efforts to plug this card. But, yes, they need to market him more.
Sarcasm Chuck! But I appreciate you posting my comment!
2-part question: When Forrest Griffin gets beaten by Tito Ortiz, does he get cut? Does he care anymore?
You know, I was in Vegas two weeks ago and saw Griffin training at Throwdown. If he doesn't care (and I've accused him of this, too), then he has a funny way of showing it. He was training very hard. I expect to see the Griffin that showed up against Franklin this time through. After that? Back to the crap shoot.
While everyone's talking about Machida, what's his stance in the UFC now a days? Close to Jardine territory?
No, I think he's held in way higher regard than Jardine. He lost to Jones in his last fight, so they thought enough of him to stick him in there for a title shot. I do think he needs a win in the next one though to avoid the fate you're getting at.
Is it me or did UFC 146 take a pretty drastic hit with the loss of Overeem? Mir won't stand a chance against JDS, and Cain should own Bigfoot.
I agree to an extent. The UFC had to shuffle the card, and now it looks a little less alluring than it did. JDS does look like a mismatch for Mir, and Bigfoot does look like he's in for a long night with Cain. But the fun thing about this division is anything can happen. So, though on paper it suffers a little from the original card, maybe it plays out differently and we're all surprised.
Maybe it's because JDS is too nice. Not enough trash talking?
That might be part of it. I can't imagine him demeaning another opponent or slinging mud. He is such a nice guy. He just has to keep cracking guys craniums and then the actions will speak up for the menace and the hype.
I saw a tweet from Dana that Ronda Rousey is going to be on Tuf tonight. What could she be doing on the show? Ring Girl?
I saw that too. Have no earthly idea, but I guess that's a good way to get people to tune in.
Hunt/Struve is a ladder match right?
Will make for an interesting spectacle for sure. Sort of like when Roy Nelson fought Struve. Hunt needs to pick his shots wisely.
Any news on UFC 150? Edgar-Bendo 2?
I know that they are discussing it for August, and that Bendo/Edgar are being talked about to headline. Heard at one point Denver was being considered from one of my ESPN colleagues, so that might be the scene.
Is UFC 148 the most stacked card in history?
The most stacked with heavyweights in history maybe. It's too bad about the Overeem stuff, because it lost a little something there. But it's still a ridiculous card, particularly when you glimpse the prelims (Barboza/Dunham, Hardy/Ludwig, et al).
The day I need a special security detail in Brazil is the day I lose a title fight in the last 30... I mean, is the day I fail a drug...I don't need a special security detail, I AM a special security detail!
I'm probably in the minority but I think everyone thinks too highly of Cain. I don't think he's as great as everyone thinks and the only reason he got KO'd isn't just because of the knee. I think he struggles going forward. He had a couple nice wins (Nog & throw in Brock even though he was done by then). Now he'll be fighting the top guys going forward. He'll be a .500 fighter at best.
Interesting take, Jeff. There are some sloppy components to his game. I used to think he was overzealous in there (remember the Kongo fight?), until he withstood Lesnar. There are still some question marks with Cain for sure, but I think he's still one of the best heavies going. Some people truly believe he is the best, and he was unable to show it versus JDS with the knee, so we'll see.
How is Chael's book going to be? Is it worth a buy?
I just got it in the mail. Will let you guys know next week in the Friday chat.
Fact or Fiction: Overeem will fight in the UFC again. And then goes on to win the title.
The landscape will change pretty quick at heavyweight while he's away. The biggest detriment is that very soon after he gets back (assuming he's still in the UFC), Jon Jones will be in the division. I don't think he'll ever be champion in the UFC.
Have you had a chance to check out Fightville? It's actually really well done. Tim Credeur is like an old wise man in it.
Yeah, I did see that and for you fight fans out there, I'd recommend it. All about the rigors of training in Louisiana, and it ends up zeroing in on Dustin Poirier's rise through the ranks. Pretty cool stuff. The director, Michael Tucker, knows what he's doing.
Let me get this straight -- Hatsu Hioki turned down a title shot? What's up with that kid?
He just didn't feel ready for it, and he said as much after he beat Bart Paleszewski in Japan. Can't blame him, really. If you get a title shot, you want to be ready.
Did you hear about the security detail they had for Sonnen for the press conference in Brazil? You'd have thought they were smuggling the Christ the Redeemer statue in and out.
Ha...yeah, heard about it. Imagine what it would have been like if they'd held the event in June as promised? Would have been fun.
Scott, my book is going to be a bigger phenomenon than Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and the Bible combined!
how come UFC never considered a show in the Netherlands? BIG fighting country and fans
They are just now investigating mainland Europe. I've heard that France and Italy could be next. I would have to think they'd consider the Netherlands, given the fan base there. And hey, maybe they could roll out Overeem on that card...
Coleman referenced 148, not 146 as the most stacked card
Oh, well, UFC 148...yes, that is the most stacked card of the year. All five of the main card fights are ridiculous, and they're still adding.
Which fight could we most likely see in the future: GSP v. A. Silva or A. Silva v Bones Jones?
At this point, none of them seem all that likely. I would like to see Jones/Silva, given that they are both precision strikers and the size difference isn't as big an issue. They are also widely considered No. 1 and No. 2 P4P, so you couldn't put together a bigger fight...unless it's GSP/Silva (which seems destined to never happen).
How impressive was Michael McDonald last weekend? Do you forsee him becoming a champion?
Media members in attendance said that two guys had to help Torres back to the locker room. That's a vicious bit of power he's carrying. Too early to tell if he'll be champion, but he could be a fight away from finding out.
Are the UFC going to do a Priemtime for Silva and Sonnen? If they do, I think they should broadcast it on Fox. Get more eyeballs on it
There will be massive lead-up to this fight. A Primetime would make sense. Did you ever see Like Water, the documentary on Silva that was put out after Sonnen/Silva I? Very good. Shows the lead-up to that fight, which was crazy enough. Can't believe we're doing it again.
Will you be in New Jersey for the Fox card next weekend?
I will be in New Jersey for the card. Looking forward to that one. Koscheck/Hendricks, Palhares/Belcher and Diaz/Miller? Not a bad threesome.
You like seeing ex-fighters like Ricardo Alameda working as judges in the UFC?
I do. The thing is, many judges still don't know who has who dancing to who's beat in there, particularly on the ground. Almeida knows. He would have scored Torres/Johnson a lot differently than the judges on hand that night. Would like to see more ex-fighters become judges, honestly.
Chucky! Admit it: You are bummed the Denver Broncos didn't pick Chandler Jones, right?
I was more bummed that the Broncos traded out of the first round completely. Will have to see what they got up their sleeve tonight in rounds 2 and 3.
Hey Chuck, now that it's set what chance do you give Mir against JDS?
Maybe 20%. I just can't foresee Mir getting JDS into the danger areas where he's been most successful. Whereas, I can totally see him taking right cross and hitting the mat solo.
I would like to see a catch-weight between GSP and Lombard, any takers?
Lombard is being matched up with about everybody today.
I guess along the same lines at UFC 146, it's do or die time for Hardy and Miller ya?
I would think so. If Hardy loses a fight that's tailor-made for his style to make it five in a row, I don't think the UFC will have a choice. And Mayhem was nearly let go after his fight with Bisping. If he loses, he says he'll retire. But if he loses looking lousy, he'll at very least be cut.
What would your least favorite match up be right now? Askrin v anyone? How about Askrin v GSP. Pretty sure that could put anyone to sleep.
That makes me uncomfortable to think about, GSP/Askren. But you know what? In that fight, we'd see GSP thwart his takedowns, keep the fight standing and just completely beat him up on the feet. So it wouldn't be a typical Askren fight.
OK, guys, I should bounce. No Bellator tonight, and no UFC this weekend. Enjoy it anyway, and watch Invicta. We'll see you back here next Friday ahead of UFC on FOX 3. If I didn't get to your question, hit my Twitter feed...@ChuckMindenhall.
