Bold Prediction: Ryan Broyles takes Offensive Rookie of the Year next season having help from a stud QB and great WRs pulling coverage off of him.
Too bold. Offensive rookie award is going to either Luck, Griffin or Richardson. Can't see anyone else winning it.
Hi Jake, been itching to bring #8 to the Switzer Center for some time. Could it be that the Sooners are a sleeper team this year to win it all because nobody is expecting them to. Any thoughts?
I buy that. Last year OU was preseason No. 1, but I really thought they were a step below LSU and Alabama going into the season. There won't be as much pressure on this team, which is a good thing.
Hey Jake, so I haven't heard much on Dom Whaley's health recently. Is he still making good progress in his recovery?
Yeah, he's doing well. Jogged throughout the spring. Expected to be cleared before the season opener, and probably sooner.
Who's wiser when it comes to football? Mel Kiper, Tom Luginbill, or Kirk Herbstreit?
They all have different specialties. Kiper, the draft, Luginbill, recruiting, Herbstreit, college football. I enjoy listening to all three.
Heard any news of OU moving up one of its conference games to one of the open dates in September?
No, haven't heard anything about it.
Are we getting a Broyles 2.0 out of Shepard? He seems very similar to his play style and ability-set. What are the chances that he, or Durron Neal, starts?
I'm not sure we'll ever see another Ryan Broyles. But Shepard has the potential to be an effective player out of the slot. He's shifty, good in finding open space, good hands -- a natural for that position. With Metoyer basically solidifying a starting role, it will be difficult for either Shepard or Neal to start -- but both have a chance to play big roles in the passing game.
When will we here about the undrafted FA signings. I saw on twitter that Sam Proctor also signed with Detroit
This week... Yes, Proctor has been invited to Lions camp. Same with Winchester and Kansas City. Haven't heard about any others yet, but I would expect Stephen Good to get invited somewhere.
Monkin seems to have stepped into it over Jones and OU. Is this the motivation that Jones needs to (get pi.ss.ed off) and take his game to the next level? He never seems to have an air of emotion or urgency that we have seen from others at OU, granted there is a fine balance to show fiery leadership and create panic. Thoughts?
I doubt it makes any difference to Jones, the same way Stills popping off about Blackmon on Twitter last year made any difference to Blackmon. It might be a bigger deal to Jones' teammates, though. Believe me, they know about it, and will be reminded about it the week of Bedlam.
So I've got zero filter on my mouth. What I meant to say was Landry is an incredible QB and it's still tough to string together a great season from start to finish. Landry did stunk it up about as bad as any Big 12 QB ever, but he's got grit and talent enough to make it back. Do you think Landry holds Bell at bay? Or does Bell put Landry on the bench before end of season?
Jones would have to have a meltdown of epic proportion for Bell to take his job.
JT, Our competition this year looks to be WVU and maybe Texas. Who else will play us tough enough to make it interesting?
There has never been as many teams capable of winning the Big 12 as there will be this season. K-State has Klein back at QB, OSU should still score a ton of points even with the freshman QB, TCU has an underrated offense. All three of those teams, plus WV and maybe Tech will be tough outs.
Which, if any, of our games next season do you see us losing?
If you lost to Tech, you're capable of losing to about anyone. That said, the five toughest games in order: 1. at WV, 2. Texas, 3. at TCU, 4. OSU, 5. Notre Dame/K-State/at Tech
Tony Jefferson a top 15 pick when he goes pro, agree?
Disagree. Safeties are rarely picked in the Top 15. Mark Barron was a two-time All-American and he was a fringe top 15 pick.
Todd Monken... brilliant purveyor of mind-games or bumbling fool who inherited Dana Holgorsen's offense?
Great offensive mind, offensive coach. Needs to be smarter when talking to the media. You can't slam individual players like that from opposing teams without it coming back to bite you.
Which Sooner will shine brightest his rookie year?
That guy who wears No. 17. What's his name?
Assuming Whaley is healthy to start the season and 100%, and stays that way throughout the season, how many yards does he top this year?
He has the talent to rush for 1,000 yards, but he won't get the carries to get there. Too many other options in the backfield, plus they'll be careful about overworking Whaley, given the ankle.
Were you more surprised that Ryan was drafted so high coming of an ACL? Or that Ronnell was drafted so low, with the Lions not selecting him until the 4th round?
That Ronnell went so, and that he went to a 4-3 defense. I guess the Lions will use him as a pass rush specialist, the way OU did in 2010.
Will OU have an All-Big12 player in the secondary next year? if so who do you think it could be, outside of Tony Jefferson.
I bet either Demontre Hurst or Aaron Colvin earn first-team All-Big 12. The other will be second team.
The track record for DB's drafted under the Stoops tenure is pretty underwhelming (Perkins, Wolfolk, Straight, Reggie Smith, etc.) Roy Williams was decent for a few years, but his career flamed out quickly as well. Is this a systemic issue? And do you see Fleming being any different?
Under Stoops, OU hasn't had a physical freak at DB like a Gerald McCoy or Tommie Harris at DT, or Adrian Peterson at RB. Those guys were really good college players, but the size and speed was lacking. Fleming has some NFL-caliber physical skill. He's got a shot to be a starter.
Any chance Danzel Williams earns some snaps this year, without injuries? Which RB has the best season for OU?
I doubt he gets more than spot carries. Too many others ahead of him on the depth chart (Whaley, Damien Williams, Finch, Clay). Factor in the Belldozer and Trey Millard getting his 4-5 carries a game, and I just don't see where Danzel fits in, barring injury to somebody.
Congrats to the new Sooner millionaires selected in the draft: Broyles, Stephenson, Fleming, Alexander, Lewis, Hanna, and Lewis. Are you telling me our 9-3 Sooner's from last year won't show a drop-off with these guys drafting out?
OU will really miss Frank and Ronnell and obviously Broyles. Everyone else is replaceable. The WR corps should be OK without Broyles given the newcomers, but I have concerns about the d-line. Has the potential to be very, very average.
Jake, do you think Gundy made Monken appologize for the Landry comments? Have you heard if Bob had anything to say about it?
Monken probably realized he messed up when he saw his quote in print. Gundy couldn't have been happy about it, either. Stoops hasn't come out and said anything about it, but he will be asked about it eventually, I'm sure.
Can we finally put to rest that Bob Stoops would take another college head coaching job. I think he understands legacy and tradition better than others. I only see him going to the Dallas Cowboys the next time Jerry gets angry. You think we'll keep hearing his name come up for a top tier coaching vacancies in college/?
If he was going to leave, he would have left already. He's been offered every conceivable job he might take: Florida, Notre Dame, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns. The Cowboys could intrigue him, but I don't see him taking a pro job. Way too much stress.
What are Landrys chances at winning the Heisman next year look like?
As long as the Belldozer continues to sap his stats, Jones is a longshot.
Your esteemed Colleague David Ubben has admitted to Doing the Gundy, have you tried it yet?
I'm hoping the Whaley ankle break will not be as difficult to recover from as the nasty break Adrian Taylor suffered in the Sun Bowl. I don't want him back until he is truly 100%, heard anything on that lately?
The Taylor break was so much worse. A year later, Taylor could barely jog. Whaley is already jogging.
Outside of Landry, who is most draftable on our roster for '13 and where do you see them being taken?
Stills and Jefferson. I could see either being second round picks, if they had monster seasons and came out early.
Answer me this (my first Q selected!): Metoyer is really looking like the real deal. What's your probability that he delivers as a true freshman? I'm talking about delivering 1,000 yards and +12 TD's. Speak it J-Trot!
He is the real deal, but that's too much to ask. I could see 700 yards, 7 TDs, though.
What makes 2 of the best 3 running backs in this year's espnu 150 commit to a pass first school.
The chance to compete for a national title, and opportunity to get to the next level. Two of the NFL's starting RBs are from OU (DeMarco, AD).
Should I re-evaluate Tim Kish if he doesn't deliver Chans Cox? :)
Yeah, he should be fired immediately.
If Dom cannot come back full speed, does he have a redshirt he can use?
If he missed the entire season, they could apply for a hardship, considering he missed half of 2011 as well.
Frank Alexander has to be happy being drafted by the Panthers and playing opposite Charles Johnson who should garner most of the attention? Excited to see what he can do in Carolina.
It will be interesting to see how Frank's game translates. He has a better shot at a successful career in the NFL than Jeremy Beal because of the athleticism.
Hanna to Dallas seems like a perfect fit along the same lines as Broyles in Detroit (although I was hoping for a Blackmon, Broyle, Bradford connection in St. Louis), do you see him getting much time on the field this year?
I thought for sure Blackmon was going to the Rams. Bradford could be in for another long year without the addition of any WR help (Brian Quick might not be a guy that plays right away). Murray's success in Dallas won't hurt Hanna. I could see him fitting in as a flex tight end.
How likely do you think it is that all 4 Sooners that are getting a shot to make the lions will play next year. (The pro team of OSU great Barry Sanders, BTW) Will Broyles start and by what game if so?
If he's healthy, Broyles will start in the slot from day one. The Lions didn't draft him in the second round to sit the bench. Ronnell could get spot duty, and Fleming could play some, too. I don't see anyone else starting or playing much right away.
Lions fans were really down on the Broyles pick, due to his injury, and their D needs. Players can get back to 100% now after ACL tears, can't they? What % would you give him to start sometime next season?
75 percent, maybe higher.
Is there any talk about signing high level linebackers for the 2013 class. I know the emphasis has been on defensive backs but I think we clearly need linebackers too.
LB is a need, but OL, DB appears to be the priority.
Long time Horns fan and I'm seriously concerened about our abilities on offense, the defense will be good. How much crying will I be doing after we get slaughtered by OU in the RRR this year? Score predictions?
Are you sure you're a Texas fan?
On the Landry draft question, I think an improved O-Line, a decent running game and the great number of receivers available will give LJ the tools he needs to excel and be a top 10 pick. What do you say Jake?
No question, the upside is there for that. If Ryan Tannehill can be a top 10 pick, so can Jones.
How do you think Oklahoma would fair against some of the better Defensive squads in the Big Ten like MSU, UM, and PSU?
The defense is better in the Big Ten, but not that much better. It's becoming an offensive league more and more.
I seen where Brandon Williams had a KO return for a TD, why didn't Bob put him back there? We haven't had one in so long I'm beginning to wonder if Stoops needs to try more guys back there.
Bob didn't trust him to hold onto the football. That's why he didn't play RB either until late in the season. I agree, OU should try more guys back there, especially punt return. Bob tends to go with the guys he knows will catch the ball, instead of the guy capable of breaking one off. If Kenny Stills is returning punts next season, I don't see many long returns. Then again, don't see many fumbles, either.
What are the chances we can find me another year of eligibility????
Sorry, Dean. The Wishbone is dead.
As a Sooner fan, one concern has been the field goal issue, what is in store for next year?
For the first time in five years, it should be a strength. Hunnicutt looked good in the spring game.
Who commits next?
Justin Manning maybe?
Jake, the slide last season started when we lost Dom last year. He was our only every-down back - i.e. the only RB that could/would pass block and was able to run effectively. I'm sick of these shrimpy speedsters that can't keep the uglies off of Landry. Does Stoops get this fixed this season or will Landry dirty his shorts again this year?
Underrated part of OU's late-season slide. Dom was a solid pass protector out of the backfield -- something Finch has struggled with to the point the staff wouldn't even play him early last season.
I hear Green from NU is considering OU, TCU. % he comes to OU?
Because he wants to be close to home I would say the chances are not great.
Do you think josh will change the offense much this year? At times last season there seemed to be no rythem to the play calling..other times it was better but outside the texas game I wasn't too impressed.
OU was a top 10 scoring team last season, and was missing two of its three best players the last half of the season. Not bad.
Justin Manning, sounds good to me. Can we get that today please? Would help with the long summer months.
I'll see what I can do.
Whats for dinner, I'm hungry?
Eating somewhere downtown before the Thunder game. Any suggestions?
Will our power run(goal line) game be better this year or does our style of play prevent us from powering through a d line withough 3 fullbacks n tightends.
With Trey Millard and Adam Shead, there's no reason it shouldn't be at least decent. Those two guys will take your head off run blocking.
JT, Cover for me. Keep your rabid Sooner fans occupied for a week.Question - When will we start hearing that Mike and Kish are making a real difference with the Sooner D?
Occupy David Ubben... Haven't we been hearing that already?
How would you rate our chances of landing 2 of the following 3. Prevot, Manning, and Mathis. If not very, what other options are available?
Decent. I like OU's chances with Manning.
Why does Oregon always get the credit for playing high tempo, OU brought it to the national stage in the championship game and orchestrated the highest scoring offense of all time before it became trendy.
Oregon went to the Rose Bowl... OU was in the Insight.
If we went 4 or 5 wide this fall who do you think would be the WR's?
1. Stills, 2. Metoyer, 3. Reynolds, 4. Franks, 5. Neal/Gardner.
I know how to stop Landry - bust him a couple of times - and use my NFL bound Corners to keep his happy feet planted. Do you think the new OKState kid breaks 4,000 yards? Will he have a better competition than Landry?
I like Lunt, and I like the move for OSU long term. But Lunt is going to have his bumps. Landry struggled his first year, and he had the benefit of a redshirt.
Chances Tres Way earns honors this year? Yes I want to know about our Punter.
Second-team all-conference is best case scenario as along as Quinn Sharp is still in the league. Do that, and who knows, Jacksonville might take you in the third round.
West Virginia figures to be the toughest road game for the Sooners. But which opponent will give OU the most difficcult time at home?
1. Bedlam, 2. K-State, 3. Notre Dame.
Seen any good rap videos lately?
Any thoughts on the Freshman being named QB at Pokie State?
The guy Lunt actually reminds me of is Landry Jones. Same height, good arm strength, not real mobile.
I seen where an OU player was having Chemo, could you enlighten me please
Yeah, Austin Woods, the field goal snapper, was diagnosed with hodgkins. Really tragic, but he's been in good spirits.
What's the difference between oklahoma's strength/workout program n alabama's? When alabama gets players they seem to turn into monsters..ou's doesn't seem to be as tough.
Alabama recruits monsters. They don't do anything magical.
Who has the better RB's, my Sooner's or Little Bro's?
Joe Randle/Jeremy Smith form the best 1-2 two punch in the league.
National Championship contender from the Big 12, Jake?
OU is probably the lone viable title contender... West Virginia maybe a sleeper.
I think the D line will be much better than average. Washington and King will have to improve but the middle with McGee and the rotation I am not worried about. Especially since we have a 6 foot 6, 330 pounder who can do standing back flips!
Does OU have an all-conference performer up front? I don't see it.
Yes, I'm a pragmatic Horns fan that backs up everything with historical facts. Seriously, if played today, what's your call on the RRR? You think my D can bust Landry while bashing the Sooner D with our running attack?
The team with the better QB almost always wins this game. OU has the better QB, and it's not close.
How badly has the OU baseball team underacheived this year given their lofty expectations?
If they make noise in the regionals, no one will care or remember. Then again, they have to get to the regionals, and I'm not convinced they will. Bedlam series huge for both teams.
Any prediction on which teams will play for all the marbles in the NCG this year?
USC vs. the SEC champ, whoever that turns out to be.
That's all the time we have, guys. Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions. We'll do this again next week, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week... and Thunder Up.
