What it do HornsNation. Thank you all for stopping by. Let's get to our first question.
What Texas Longhorns Got Selected in the 2012 NFL Draft?
Keenan Robinson, Manny Acho and Kheeston Randall. Several more signed free agent contracts, including Justin Tucker, David Snow, Christian Scott, Cody Johnson and Blake Gideon.
How soon do you see Davis commiting? Are our chances with Wilson good since we are in final two. (oregon and Texas)? Been too long since a committ. I am going crazy... I hate offseason.
Been a little slow on the recruiting front, eh? I know he is tied up with track right now; qualified for the state meet. So i definitely don't see it happening before that is over. I do, however, presume he'll make his decision before next season starts. I think Texas' chances are decent with Wilson simply because of the proximity to home. I think he'd already be committed to Oregon if it weren't so far away. He took an extended trip out there weeks ago to make sure he could handle it. But a few days is much different than a few years. That being said, I know he doesn't like the idea of being a "DJ Monroe" guy for Texas. He wants to be an every-down back, and there might not be room at Texas for that.
Marcell Harris interview, when asked who is favs are he said "dont really have top schools yet but Texas, Florida, Texas". He mentioned Texas twice. Sounds promising. How we looking for him?
Harris has always liked Texas. He appreciates the tradition the Longhorns have with being "DBU" and all of that, and has made it known by visiting Austin twice. What makes the Longhorns even more intriguing to him is the opportunity he'd get for immediate playing time. They are in good position with him but I still think Florida looks good too.
Long shot here, if Gray comes right out of the gates and out performs Berg and Brown without question, or vice versus, do you see us nominating an exclusive back in our future or are we sticking with the plan of watering down our stars?
No. I think this offense will continue with the three-back set regardless of if another RB begins to shine. Now, if that back completely dominates, eh, surely he'll get more carries. But all three are so explosive in their own rights I just find it hard to believe that Harsin-Applewhite wouldn't find ways to get them involved.
If Jeffcoat has a good year as expected, do you see him entering the draft after this season or will he need another year to rise his stock?
Tough call right now. I'll lean toward him entering draft. I think his stock really began to rise at the end of last season when he began to turn it on.
Who do you like better for Texas- Samples, Massington, or Rhodes?
I'm a Samples guy. I know injuries are always a concern, and rightfully so, but to see the way his body has matured in the last year leads tells me two things. 1) he is putting in the time and effort to get there and 2) his body is only likely going to continue to transform under Bennie Wylie should he choose Texas. Add his ever-growing frame with his hands, agility and quickness and I'll take Samples out of those three.
Football-Considering what we have already on the books for 2013s class, what are your 2 top position needs and who do you like for them regardless of who you think we will get? Now, who do you think we can get to fill those positions?
Top two needs right now for 2013? DB and, um, DT. I think Texas will get, at minimum, one of the two between Davis and Smith and have a very good shot at Harris and/or possibly Bell. DT is going to be tricky. A'Shawn Robinson is already in the fold. I'm not so sure Texas is sold on Vincent Taylor. The Longhorns are hoping someone will emerge from their spring evaluations because, lets be real, Justin Manning isn't coming to Texas.
Wild guess- Texas total rushing yards for this season? Who will be the leading rusher??
Texas rushed for 3,028 yards last season and I think, barring injury, it will exceed that by at least 200 yards this season. I'll go with Brown as the leading rusher, with Bergeron nipping on his heels. Gray's numbers I believe will be spread out between rushing yards and receiving yards. He has unbelievable hands.
Cravens seems to be wide open, why havent we gone after him? Didnt he express some interest in Texas?? Is Hargreaves III off limits for us, he is still uncommitted and doesnt appear to have any favs either??
I think this is a matter of Texas trying to figure out if they really have a chance with a player, and if it would be worth using their resources on them. Cravens is going to stay on the west coast from what I have been told, so that could be keeping Texas from pursuing.
M Smith had Texas as his dream school. He now says Bama is definitely his fav. Has he decided that he will pursue soccer over football yet?
With all the transfers (including Darius White), does Naashon Hughes now get a scholarship instead of a gray shirt?
That is a very interesting question and one that Texas is going to have to decide here in the coming months. Do they offer Hughes, a player that is clearly loyal to Texas, a full ride? Or do they save it for someone else? I'll dig into this and see what/if Hughes has heard anything.
Any update on Devonta Pollard? What are our chances to land him?
Apparently he is going to decide next week, and he might be trimming his list of possibilities to two by Thursday or Friday of this week. I think Texas still has a chance. I know that Cameron Ridley was really working him hard at the McDonald's All-American Game.
What exactly is HornsNation? Does UNC have a similar made up nickname for their? That way, when they have more major violations, we can all say what in TarNation is going one down there.
You are a funny man James.
What was the Peter Jinkens - Justin Manning twitter feud all about? Does that pretty much put a stake in our chances at landing Manning?
Kids being kids. I have really never thought Manning was interested in Texas to being with and this Twitter spat only confirmed that in my eyes.
Will the transfers and early enrollees open up more scholarship spots to give out?
It should. Question is, will Texas use them this season or wait until next?
Where do you see Mykkele Thompson starting next season?
Garrett representing my hometown (kind of). How about them Spurs! Back to football. Thompson will obviously see more playing time but I'm not sure he finds a starting role on defensive unless Adrian Phillips can't get healthy. He did, however, show incredible burst with his kickoff return in the spring game. So I do think he'll have a future there.
Just wondering if you could post a list of transfers and their new schools for the past 4-5 recruiting classes. And who was your favorite high school athlete you covered while at the gram?
Certainly. Will try and get that up soon. Favorite high school athlete I covered while in Fort Worth had to be J Gray. I remember covering a game Aledo played against Everman when he was a freshman, and a guy tapped me on the shoulder and said "Look at that kid right there. He will be the top RB in the nation in three years." He was wrong. It only took him two years. Honorable mention: Darius White (just toyed with people in FWISD).
On Cottrell- I was not aware of this guy at all. Was Texas showing interest prior to getting Shiro or was this a scramble thing then we got Shiro and now we are trying to make the best of it?
A little of both I think. Cottrell was never really on Texas' radar until really late in the process. The Longhorns had long been going after Shiro but weren't really sure where they stood. He'd always told me Texas was just below LSU. Texas couldn't wait around for Shiro when they felt unsatisfied with who they had committed at DE already so they took Cottrell.
After the latest DB update it mentioned that Texas may be the leader for M. Harris, what are the chances that we land him out of those offered thus far? And if we do not gain a commit from V. Bell who will they offer next, Miles or Baltimore? And after being in the lead for Davis and Smith, how does Texas stand with them now?
I have always thought Texas' chances with Harris were better than average, and I think they'll get no worse than that. I'd put Texas up there with Florida as the teams to beat. I'll lean toward Miles. I think GB ends up in the SEC. Smith likes Alabama a whole lot right now. I think Texas is in some trouble. Not so much with Smith.
Now that the ESPN 150 is out for the 2013 class, when can we expect the first set of 2013 class rankings?
Early fall. We still aren't entirely finished with our evals yet.
Who do you see being the next 2 to fall into place after Jeffcoat and Okafor?
After seeing Reggie Wilson in the spring game, I'll say Wilson is definitely in line for a breakout year even with Jeffcoat and Okafor on the roster. I know everyone likes Shiro and expects him to do nice things early on, which I don't doubt, but I'm going to go with Hassan Ridgeway as my sleeper pick. I think he is going to surprise a lot of people as he did at the US Army All-American game.
With the new article i read about Bryce C, any chance we see Manny move him to possibly back up J hicks or Cobbs? our d line is growing to be dominate.
I think it's a possibility without question. Bryce is going to have to pack on quite a bit of weight IMO to stay on the d line. Not to mention the other DEs that are coming in. What might keep him there, at least for this season, is the fact that Caleb Bluiett could move to TE instead of his recruited DE position with the loss of Onyegbule (through the fall preseason) and Darius Terrell's decision to transfer.
Anybody on the roster we can see potential Heisman Hopeful from in the future yrs?
His last name starts with a "G" and ends in a "Y"
Any news on Fozzy? I'd love to see him get a shot.
None to my knowledge. I know he had a meeting with the Patriots cancelled leading up to the draft. I think he'll get a chance somewhere.
What do you think will be the biggest difference from last years success to this years?
First and foremost just the comfort level the players and coaches have with each other. Always difficult for a new coaching staff to come in. Second, I think Texas simply has better players on this roster than last.
Do you expect the Horns to receive any DB commitments in the near future?
Before National Signing Day? Yes. Next week? No. In the month of May? I don't think so.
Before National Signing Day? Yes. Next week? No. In the month of May? I don't think so.
Will newcomer TCU prove to be stiffer competition for the Horns in baseball or football now that their full time members of the Big XII?
Can I say "both"? Both of those programs are so solid because of their head coaches I think they will be immediate threats to Texas in both sports. Now, basketball, not so much. Have you ever been to a TCU home game? There were more people at my graduation than there have been at TCU home games in years past. And I graduated with 250. Ok, so I might be exaggerating, but you get the point.
Who is the better pro prospect, Okafor or Jeffcoat?
Okafor is to me. His size is more ideal. Plus, wouldn't you want a guy that can pull off the Chris Canty face mask on your roster?
William, will I land any of the top Texas basketball prospects in the Class of 2013? Or will they all attend school out of state, or even worse, go to Baylor?
Rick, I think it all depends on who you recruit the hardest. Obviously the state of Texas has as much, or more, talented prep bball players than any other state in 2013. The Barnes twins are both exceptional, as is Randle. You need to land at least one of those don't you?
Alabama NEVER loses when they're at the top of a recruit's list. Maurice Smith is going to Alabama, and that's the hard truth. I'd love to be wrong and see him become a longhorn, but it's just not going to happen. Insight?
Eddie, I hate to rub all your burnt orangebloods the wrong way, but I'd have to agree with you as of now. Smith clearly wasn't happy that Texas waited so long to offer. Plus, the fact that Saban will help coach DBs, has to be intriguing to a budding star DB doesn't it?
Stephen Jackson: Great Spur, or The Greatest Spur?
If he gets the black and gold "one for the thumb" he'll be a great Spur. No's 50, 21, 32, 6, 20 and 9 are in line to be the greatest Spur.
Any chance the Longhorns land Nebraska transfer Aaron Green? Or are the Horns more likely to end up facing him in Big XII conference play?
It doesn't appear likely Tony. Crazy to think that one of San Antonio's all-time great high school athletes could have gone 70 miles up the road to begin with. Wonder where he would fit in with this roster though?
Am I the only one who sees massington as a far better recruit than samples? and also don't see the need of wilson as a longhorn ?
Definitely not the only one. I know there are plenty of them out there that feel the same way. As for Wilson, I'm going to venture that your reasoning behind that is "Texas already has three solid backs, Daje Jonson, Kyle Hicks, etc." If that's true, and it's a valid point, I'd still refute it with the simple fact that Wilson is one of the most dynamic players in the nation. If you have the opportunity to add a guy like that to your roster you do it, and find room for him afterward.
Which, if any, Seniors/Draft Eligible Juniors on the roster next year go in the first three rounds of the draft next year?
Vaccaro, Okafor, possibly Walters.
Can you give a brief summary of what will go on with the football team between now and fall camp? What interaction is allowed between coaches and players, when do freshmen show up, etc?
Spring practices are just now getting underway so you'll see coaches start to pop up all over the place. Players from Texas' 2012 class will begin to come down to Austin as soon as school ends for them, which in many cases, is around May 25. Be sure to check out our daily series starting today where we do a Q&A with each of the remaining 22 members of 2012 that have yet to enroll. Bryce Cottrell's is up now.
Sounds like that samaje perine guy is a must get. By then we'd need another power back and his current strength is crazy. How hard does Texas go after this guy?
I think they'll go after him extremely hard. They are going to have to to keep him away from his SEC roots.
In reference to part of the question above. Hargreaves is favoring Florida and Clemson right now.
What does Swoopes need to improve on to become the #1 recruit in the nation?
Physically, he's got all of the tools to be THAT guy. If I had to pick one thing I'd say he needs to show more of a presence in the huddle. Not saying he doesn't have it, he does. But he's a very soft spoken individual. Being a little more boisterous might help.
We finally got Ridley signed, but will he be academically eligible to play next year. Thought I heard some rumblings that was a concern and partly reason for the delay in signing? Thanks
His mom told me that his grades were fine. I'd like to take her word for it.
Which sport first plays meets aTm in the future (assuming via a playoff and/or bowl game)?
How about a volleyball regional in Austin? If not that, then a possible Super Regional in baseball or the Cotton Bowl in Arlington.
Is it reasonable to think that J. Gray could get many totes with the likes of Berg and brown in the stable?
Without question. He's that good.
What is the current status of Texas with Torredney Prevot? Diaz could use the additional depth at defensive end. Especailly if Jeffcoat decides to join Okafor in the NFL after next season?
Nothing much has changed with Torrodney. He still really likes Texas, LSU and Texas A&M among a few others.
Is the out of state, and out of country, recruiting, hurting Rick Barnes with in state prospects?
I don't think it is. These players, and the coaches he and his assistants have to build relationships with, understand the business. When you are a school like Texas that has the luxury of recruiting around the country, why not take advantage of that.
How vital is Samaje Perine? Top 2014 Rbs?
He's one of the top 2014 RBs in the state, without question. Dude looks like a middle linebacker.
I've heard some, very low talk, that Texas may come out with a version of the wishbone next season. It would be used on special occasions. With the quality of backs coming in next year and placing them in the backfield together would cause DKR Stadium to explode it that were to happen.
I know Johnathan Gray's father has thought about that being a possibility in my talks with him. I can see it being used in special packages (Oklahoma, maybe?).
Tell your buddy James above, that this Tar Heel is working out pretty good for your Spurs? And SHHHH
Keep nailing those treys Danny boy.
Do you think Texas can maintain this power running scheme post Mack and maintain sec line coaches for years to come?
I do. Will that be what they want to do though? I know Harsin predicates his offense around the run. So it's vital to his success.
who is texas looking at the hardest for the class of 14 in football since 13 is almost done with
Too early to tell. But some names that will def. be up there: Hoza Scott, Nick Harvey (just got offered by Arkansas today), Darrion Johnson, Cedric Collins.
Am I greatest Longhorn basketball player of all time, male or female?
Most certainly top 4.
Honestly, don'y you think Samples is just collecting offers (30) by now?
Eh, maybe. But if he is, can you blame him? This only happens once. I'd be relishing in the spotlight too a little bit if I could. That spotlight just never found its way over to a 6-foot-3, white defensive back from small-town south Texas.
Go Spurs Go!!! That is all...
Best. Post. Ever.
A wishbone consisting of Brown, Berg, and Gray, with DJ or Flash coming across on jet sweeps would be unstoppable IMO. Who do we talk to about getting this implemented?
Start chunking rocks at the windows of Mack Brown, Harsin and Applewhite over at DKR. They are bound to hear you.
If Pollard joins, how good can we be next year? Also baseball- College World Series?
I think Texas is a top 20 team right now. More 18-20 than 12-17. But that's saying a lot considering it lost their top scorer from a year ago in J'Covan. The presence of Ridley, Ibeh and Lammert is going to be so huge for Myck. If Pollard were to join that and give Texas a legit 6-7 wing, I could see them challenging for the Big 12 title. Yeah, I said it.
Have I replaced Eva Longoria as the sexiest Spurs fan?
Are you sure Eva is a Spurs fan anymore?
Do you expect any additional attrition from the current FB roster, and if so, who are the most likely candidates?
I don't think there will be anymore before the kickoff of the 2012 season.
So with the new Playoff bowl senerio, the Big 12 is gonna be tied to the Fiesta Bowl in stead of the Cotton Bowl with the Big Wigs are gonna include into the mix of Major Bowls. To whom will be selected for the Big E/ MWC-CUSA. In my mind however, The Cotton Bowl has more history with The former SWC and the Big 8 which comprise of the New Big 12, then the Big East or the MWC (formally the WAC). How are the crybabies from the Big10 and PAC keeping their Roses and the Big 12 can't get our old Bowl back?
Dolla, dolla bils ya'll. I think. Maybe?
Gun to your head - do we land any of the following:1. Prevot2. Samples3. Smith4. Bell5. Harris6. Rhodes (assuming he's offered)7. Massington (assuming he's offered)8. Luke (assuming he's offered). Also, why haven't we offered Mike Mitchell? Dude looks beastly and his kid brother has some serious Bball skills.
I'll go with door No. 1, No. 3 and (struggling to open it) No. 6. Mitchell is a beast. But Texas already has its Lbs. Numbers game.
Worst case scenario: Texas loses out on M. Smith, M. Harris, A. Davis, and V. Bell. Where does Mack go from there?
To his office to get some headache medicine.
If Mack Brown has two more consecutive unsuccessful years and gets fired. Who are good candidates for the head coaching job if Harsin and Diaz are not available?
I'd go after Kirby Smart.
Will we have to wait until August to see whether Kendall Sanders plays WR or CB? Also, I have a feeling that Maurice Smith is it seem like he is leaning toward Bama just to make Texas want him that badly. Thoughts?
I'm going to talk with Kendall tonight hopefully to figure that out. I think he'll start out as a WR. Then again, his two-INT effort at the U.S. Army All-American Game certainly made things interesting.Smith might be doing that but what else could he want from Texas? He's gotten the offer.
Alright, that'll do it for this weeks chat. Thank you all for stopping by.
