Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

Greetings all. Thanks so much for stopping by.

Robbie (JAX)

Can Aaron Kampman make an on-field contribution to the Jaguars this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

I think he'd be gravy. It's been a long time. But it's not inconceivable he's finally healthy and can contribute.

Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)

What is the real scoop on this Vlachos kid? Some of your colleagues seem to think he has some real skills...if so why was he not drafted? Should I waste my time with this kid?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

Lots of good players aren't drafted. He'll get thrown in with Eugene Amano, Fernando Velasco and Kevin Matthews and they'll see who emerges.

Jared (Los Angeles, CA)

The Jaguars got the top WR prospect as well as 2 pretty good FA signings at WR. I'd say Gabbert has no more excuses in 2012 right?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

Let's not go crazy with Lee Evans. He's a reclamation project. But Laurent Robinson and Justin Blackmon are big additions and should make a huge difference for Gabbert.

Vince Young (Somewhere, NY or TX)

Will I be on a roster come opening night? It seems no one really wants me to be their QB. Will you be my life coach?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

No thanks. You'll be a No. 3 somewhere, yes.

Shaun (TN)

You can't grade a draft until you see the product. Yet, I loathe the Titan's draft. It reeks with mediocrity. Where is our OL or our DE? Anyways, I have read some that praise this draft for its "creativity." It seems more like risk-taking to me. Why can't the Titans draft like the Steelers who hit all needs with best available and never risked or reached?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

Sure seems like you are grading a draft before you see the product. Did you love Karl Klug last year at this time?

@THEREALALLENOU (Houston)

so suggs is out. does this push the texans ahead of the ravens for this season

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

A crushing blow for Baltimore. But the Ravens still don't play the NFC North.

Travis (houston)

With the additions to the defense through the draft, where do you see the Texans ranking at the end of the year? Over / Under 10 sacks for Mercilus?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

They should be a top 10 defense. I can't see Mercilus with double digit sacks, though.

Fernando (Pinellas Park, Florida)

Why did FB Hall fall out of favor with the titans, he has speed and is a good pass catcher out of the back field. Did we get better with the additions to FB position?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

Hasn't been as good since CJ's 2,000-yard season. Quinn Johnson was on the roster, now they added the kid who played at Army. I'd be fine with them scrapping fullback all together.

Chris (Houston)

When you grade the teams' drafts, is it based on addressing needs, picking the best player available, a mix of the two? Or just who made themselves better in general?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

Here's what happens -- on some level, guys who fit needs get graded up a little and, miraculously, needs and values line up. You don't see a team that drafted a QB in the top 12 last year drafting a QB high the next year. Certain positions become off limits, and if there is a huge value at your position at that spot, you trade out. I don't grade.

Jak city (Houston)

Do you see the Texans picking up a FA WR soon?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

They just drafted two wide receivers. What free agent is out there to chase? No.

Christian (Rahway, NJ)

Why release Drew Coleman? He was great for us last year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

I have no idea. I need to investigate.

@THEREALALLENOU (Houston)

Who are you more confident in to make an impact, carmichael or harris at CB for the texans and why?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:13 PM)

Not wild about either. I think they'll wind up grabbing an outsider late in camp.

R.D. (TX)

I keep hearing about jared krick playing DE but not alot about him playing NT what's keeping him from beefing up a little and going after that position. We both know it's not one of the texans strongest positions.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

Guys come into the league with skills sets. You can't just gain or lose weight and all of a sudden be good at a different skill set.

Andy (Houston, TX)

Do you think Houston's D will be as dominant as it was last year? I realize being in the AFC South where the offenses weren't overly powerful helped their rankings, but they did well except for in a couple spots last year

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

No, I think it will come back to earth some. But still be good.

Ryno (Florida heading to TN)

How much longer do you think schaub will last? I remember albert haynesworth and the titans d giving him a concussion every other time they played the texans. I think the relative sucess of t.j. yates shows that he's not as important to their success as some believe.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

You're mistaken. He's very important. He played several complete seasons before last year's injury.

Jason (Cincinnati)

Do you think it was a mistake for the Texans not to draft or sign a CB in free agency? Does this mean the Texans are confident enough to let a certain 2010 first rounder sink or swim?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

They'll continue to cover for him and someone will have a chance to be the new Jason Allen.

Joe (Texas)

Where do you see the Jaguars passing game this year? Last year was 32nd.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Twenty-first? I can't really say. Closer to average.

@THEREALALLENOU (Houston)

who would you rather have as your QB in jax? gabbert, VY, or a monkey

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

Gabbert, by miles.

Brent (Chicago, IL)

When are you going to be able to get some 1-on-1 interview time with Pagano and/or Grigson? Media policies seem to be more friendly to the Paul Kuharskys of the world...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Funny you should ask. Colts' Ryan Grigson settling into tough job.

travis (houston)

I know its early, how do you see the division shaking out this year? Does it boast two playoff teams? also do you see foster and tate both getting 1000 yards this year or do you see foster taking a bigger chunk of the carries because he is healthy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

NFC North is best division in football. Bad draw for AFC South on schedule. I can't see two playoff teams. Houston's the favorite. Titans or Jaguars could surprise. Foster will and should get bulk of carries.

John (Indiana)

What do you think the Colts' depth chart for WR will look like on week 1? And how well do you think Collie will transition out of the slot and into the wide out spot or does he stay in the slot?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

Reggie Wayne and Austin Collie start. T.Y. Hilton is No. 3. It's not as if Collie's never lined up outside before.

Ali (Cleveland)

What do you think Houston's record this season will be against the Ravens, Packers, Lions, Bears, Jets, Broncos, and Patriots?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

Right now I'd guess 3-3.

Muddy Waters (Mississippi)

The titans should of drafted decastro first then peter konz. Munchak should know how good these guys are. How do you feel about ruston webers draft strategy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

You want two offensive lineman in first two picks? That's way too much. One I could see, not both. Webster had a lot to do with last year's draft, which was excellent.

Paul's Agent (Nashville)

Grigson has called and after an interview he said you can try out to play CB,he knows you old, slow and have no skills but thinks you could start for the Colts this year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

Not interested. My family is happy in Nashville. But I appreciate him thinking of me.

@ewhite17 (College Station)

You really think the NFC North is better than the NFC East?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

By quite a bit. Look at the QBs.

daniel (houston)

Why do you think the texans skipped out on drafting ruben randle and bobby massie?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

They liked other guys better.

A Fan (Houston)

So has the AFC South grown on you over the years. Not exactly the most popular division but at least one of us has always played good football. Will you cheer for them when you aren't covering them anymore?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

It's filled with good people, and that's nice. Rick Smith-Gary Kubiak, Mike Munchak-Ruston-Webster are easy to deal with. Gene Smith is good to deal with. Appears Mike Mularkey will be too. Same for Ryan Grigson-Chuck Pagano. Rare is a division where at least one team doesn't play good football. Covering Peyton Manning Colts was fun. I have an affinity for the cities. Like it here.

Mike K (Jaxson de ville, fl)

Gene Smith letting Drew Coleman go? I think Gene purposely tries to keep his zing/zang even. How else can you explain the great 1st/2nd round picks, followed by a 3rd round punter and the release of a solid player such as Coleman?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

Heard Coleman is a numbers game thing. But no reason to make this move now. None. Unless there is some late bonus we don't know about. Guessing Mike Mularkey and staff didn't like him for some reason.

Tyler (Duval)

I'll be the first to say it..... a punter.... in the 3rd round???!!! Could this be the death of Gene Smith?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

You really think you're the first to say it?

Blueman (Indy)

How will the Colts "hybrid" 3-4 defense effect roster? Will they be able to now carry extra LBs which hopefully makes special teams better(well at least more atheletic)?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Yes. They will have more conventional special teams, at least ultimately.

Tyler (Duval)

Jabar Gaffney? Could he come home to jax? Understand he is no Number 1 but could he be a good fit?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

He's not good.

Justin (Dallas)

Are there any CBs left in the free agent market who could make the Colts roster?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

Drew Coleman just hit the free agent market.

Chase (Peoria, Il)

With the release of Coleman from the Jags, is there any chance the Colts consider picking him up? He was only scheduled to make 1.5 mil this season, and we all know they are desperate for cb's.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

What he was scheduled to make has no bearing on anything now. He's a free agent.

Cam (Fort Wayne, IN)

So the Colts sign Deji Karim off waivers from the Jags. Any chance he cracks the starting rotation? what was his role in JAX?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

He was a third back. And in Indy if he's better than a third back, their first two backs really stink.

Colts fans (Indianapolis)

Will zbikowski be a difference maker or is her just a place holder?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

More B than A for me. And a big help on special teams.

Elvis Presley (Memphis)

The titans need to get into the playoffs this year or get a top five draft pick next year. The Grizzlies and Predators are lookin better and better each season. Football fans in TN are gettin restless since the 2008 season

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Trust me: The Titans standing versus the Preds and Griz is just fine, no matter if they are good or not.

Jim Bean (Bar)

would you drink me?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Only if Crown and Jack are not available.

Brandon (Kansas)

Jags thought Coleman was one-dimensional and can only play slot. Is he a good fit for the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

That's funny. They signed him because he did that one thing well and they wanted to have someone who did it well. A year later it's a bad thing?

Colin (Indy)

Paul, do you think the flurry of trades we saw in the first round will be the new norm with the new CBA, or do you think teams will be afraid that they can't move back and expect their player to still be available?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

I think it will be more wide open with people moving up and back.

Owen Daniels (Houston)

All my friends from the 2006 draft have left me/been released, and with Joel Dreesen gone, do I have what it takes to carry the full TE load this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

They will have other tight ends on the roster, including Garrett Graham.

Cam (Fort Wayne)

Who starts at safety next to Bethea? Tommy Z or Joe Lefeged?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

I'd guess Z.

Kid (Nashville)

Do you see Klug getting more play time this year than last... because last year I liked what i saw!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

More is not always better. He's good rusher. Maybe undersized against the run. So why would you want him playing the run? So he could be worn down when it's time to rush?

Tyler (Florida)

Do you see the Jags defence a top 5 unit next year? I know i do!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

Top 10.

Justin (Dallas)

If the Colts get the #1 pick again; can they get more for Barkley than St. Louis did for RG3?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

Don't get greedy. How about the same? There is some thinking Barkley will drop a year later, kind of like Matt Leinart did after he stayed at USC.

Peter Griffin (Pawtucket Brewery)

Are you a fan of craft beer? Bud, coors, miller is not real beer

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

I'm a fan of Canadian beer. Particularly Labatts.

Andy (Houston, TX)

What do you think of the Texans signing Case Keenum? Is it a publicity move or do they see something others don't?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

They see a potential No. 3 QB.

Terrance (Jacksonville)

What are your thoughts on Gene Smith?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

I think he's better than he gets credit for. But he went off the rails with the punter in the third.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

Colts/Jags/Titans all use 1st round picks for key offensive playmakers, while Texans counter with a key defensive player. Chances Houston goes 6-0 in the division this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:47 PM)

Slim to none. Very hard to do.

Adam (Jacksonville )

Do you think Brewster from Ohio State has a chance at the center job in Jax? Dude was a two time All conference center in the B1G where the line's are serious.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

Good chance to take over for Meester in a year, I'd say.

Jason (Nashville)

Will a healthy Britt along with Wright, Cook and Washington help open the run game for CJ? IMO teams can't stack the box against the Titans this year because of the mismatches it would create on the oustide. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Provided you hit on the mismatches, yes, that should then forced people out of the box. It wasn't the extra defender in the box that was CJ's issue last year, though. It was first defender/ early contact.

Zach (Nashville, TN)

If Zach Brown pans out, do you think we could have one of the best LB Corp in say 3-4 years in the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Wow, that's projecting a long way out. In 3-4 years Ayers is a free agent.

Cam (Fort Wayne, IN)

Who is your biggest impact rookie this season in the division outside of Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

Coby Fleener.

anthony (houston)

houstohe additions of the texans at wr do u see there passing game flourish again or is the offense still ran through foster

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Run through Foster.

Shea (Indianapolis)

Run to pass on the jaguars this year? Lots of mojo or will Mularkey give Gabs a balanced offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

Everyone wants to be balanced. But you lean heavily on your best players. So Gabbert has to prove worthy of more.

Shad Khan (Teh Yaht)

Do you think HBO is considering us for Hard Knocks? I would love the publicity!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

You would love it. I think you'd be about their last choice.

Zach (Nashville, TN)

You think Klug will move to DE? What about that TE/DE we drafted think he could play both sides in certain packages?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

Will not and he should not. Please, please, please let's stop with this. He's good in tight space, that's his skill. End is far more space. They won't mess with him.

mike (tn)

if kenny britt comes back 100 percent, and stays on track cpuld he be the best wr in the divsion? or would it still be andre johnson?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

If Johnson is healthy, Johnson is the best. Britt would be second.

JD (Boise)

Hey PK,It seems that running double tight sets seems to be the strength of the Texans, and losing Dreesen will be a significant blow. I'm not overly sold on Graham to step in, do you think they'll maybe try to pick up a TE at some point later on, or do you see them transitioning to more 3 WR sets given this last draft?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

Some of both.

Brian (Fishers, IN)

So, what do the Colts do with the number 1 draft pick next year? I say trade down to someone who wants Barkley for their QB, then start re-stocking the defense.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

You absolutely trade out of No. 1 to someone who wants the top QB.

Blueman (Indy)

TY Hilton a sign of possible change in WR in Indy, more playmaker type guys and less of percision type route runners?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

I think you needs a combination, not a group that's all the same guy.

Mike (Houston)

In today's game defensive teams still have to be able to throw the ball to win superbowls like the giants and steelers. Was it a mistake for Houston not go after a real playmaker at WR?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

How do you know the receivers they drafted can't be real playmakers?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:01 PM)

OK folks, it's been a fast, fun ride. Thanks for coming. See you next week I hope.
