Keep sending in your questions... we'll get rolling in a sec
With all the depth at guard, do you see Ikard moving to center after Habren graduates?
No question. Ikard has proven he can man the position. Wouldn't surprise me if Ikard got some run at center this season, to get Shead in the game, and get Habern some breaks.
I noticed that during the spring game they players names weren't on the back of the jerseys. Are they going back to that or was it just for the spring game?
Haven't heard that. It didn't go over well the first time, so I don't know why Bob would try to go back to it.
How does the new all wac WR transfer fit in and will he play?
Stealthy pick up. He's a blazer coming off a terrific season. Didn't like where the new Fresno regime was using them, so elected to transfer. He could be an impact guy in the return game. Btw, not eligible until 2013.
whatever happened with the norvell text scandal?
Scandal is way over the top. Honest mistake by a coach who could use some tutoring in social media. Give Norvell credit, he's the only coach that even tries to use Twitter. The incident was written up as a secondary violation. Not really a big deal, as embarrassing as it was.
I guess anything's possible when TV people start planning the college football television schedule, but do you have any thoughts on the possibility of OU's 2012 football schedule changing to move a game from November to September?
Haven't heard anything to suggest it. It's getting awful close to the season to be moving games around.
OU Baseball... Do the Sooners just have a glass ceiling (kind of like K-State in football) that prevents us from seriously challenging for titles, while simultaneously achieving a measure of consistent success? Is Coach Golloway the answer or the issue? Should we be happy with our season or expect more?
With 11 players going to the draft, this was always going to be a rebuilding season. It's incredibly difficult to win a national title in college baseball -- it's all about getting hot at the right time. Remember '94? Nobody considered OU a viable title contender, then out of nowhere they're beating Nomar and Varitek in the CWS title game. I think Golloway has done a nice job the last 4-5 seasons.
Just for kicks, which current Sooner (or committed recruit), aside from the default answer of Landry Jones, is most likely to win a heisman during his tenure at OU? And yes, this is a hypothetical question, don't give me the "it's a long shot, probably won't happen" cop-out answer... cough up some names, Trotter!
Blake Bell. How's that for a name?
Do the Sooners have a bit of a national stigma for choking? When I think of Ohio State, I just think of fodder wasting a spot in the championship game... I fear The Sooners might be viewed the same way...
That reputation has diminished a bit, mostly because OU hasn't been to the title game in awhile. If OU went back this season and lost again, that rep would be back in a bad way. It will be in the back of people's minds nationally, until OU wins a title.
Since half of the commits so far are instate. Does this mean the fans will take it easy on the staff in that regard? It is smart to get them out of the way, to be able to focus nationally. Hope they take Scott at QB.
You can't criticize the staff for not being aggressive with Oklahoma this year.
Jake: Im a die hard Sooners fan and im excited for Notre Dame-OU game. I know Notre Dame isn't what they used to be but, despite all that, beating them is still a big deal, because they are the "America's Team" of College Football. What are your thoughts in regards to the atmosphere of that game and the early buzz sourrounding it?
Notre Dame could be 0-7 and it will still be a big game in Norman. The tradition between the two schools is rich, and the fact OU is 1-8 lifetime against the Irish makes it even bigger, regardless of how good or bad this version of Notre Dame is.
Any talk of OU moving a conference game into one of the open dates in September?
No talk that I've heard.
What's up with OU becoming a farm system for Texas A&M these days? Also, do you think Stoops allows Jackson and Williams to leave for College Station if the Aggies are still in the Big XII?
It's not clear that Jackson has a landing spot in College Station. But I think it does show that A&M, with Sumlin, the fan support, the conference, is becoming a more attractive place for recruits. The Aggies are going to be a factor, at least in recruiting.
Do any of OU's coaches have interesting hobbies outside of sports?
Lots of golf.
Jake: Who do think is the most the most polarizing team in College Football? Personally, i still think it's Notre Dame. Period. They have their own National T.V. and radio contract; and everyone knows who Notre Dame is. Your opinion?
I might agree with you, although Texas has really narrowed the gap in the last five years. Notre Dame has been so little of a factor the last 20 years, it's hard to really be polarized by them, right?
The new Headington Hall looks like it will be awesome. I know it's considered a great recruiting tool. Which athletes get dibs on staying there?
I think it's big enough to hold the majority of freshman athletes. Remember it's going to be a 51-49 split between non-athletes and athletes. The question is, who gets dibs there among the non-athletes. That would be a cool place to live.
Will Trey Metoyer be all Big 12? Or more?
This season? All-Big 12 is asking a lot, especially with Stills on the team. Freshman All-American is reasonable, though.
Do you see any of the DE coming in the fall to get playing time or redshirt
No, Onuoha is more of a project, and I don't think Tapper is ready to play right away, either. The rotation (RJ, King, Chuka, Nelson, Grissom) is pretty much set there.
In your opinion, what are the top three coolest potential home football games OU could play? I'm a big fan of the marquee non-conference matchups.
Notre Dame, Ohio State and Alabama. Good news is that OU plays two of those three over the next five years.
They have tenn, tOSU, and LSU this decade
Correct. It's a great non-conference lineup. I think they'll try to get something done with Nebraska after the LSU series.
Jake: Who do you think will be Notre Dame's starting QB in the opener vs Navy (in Dublin)?
Have no idea how the arrest to Tommy Rees will affect the competition there.
What are your favorite sports to cover? And, if you weren't covering sports, what would you write about?
Love baseball. Covering an MLB team would be a pretty cool gig.
Have to be happy with the Sooners locking down top guys from within the state. Do you think the recent commits will expedite Manning or other targets pulling the trigger soon?
Doesn't hurt. There is a flow of momentum to recruiting. But ultimately, these kids have to make these decisions on their own time. It's always tough to predict.
What do you think of the transfer from ASU? Any chance for immediate eligibility?
You mean Arizona transfer Cortez Johnson? I like his size. He fits the Mike Stoops prototype for a CB. He'll have every opportunity to win a starting job in 2013, when he'll become eligible.
Jake, it's shaping up to be a long season in South Bend. Do I need to upset your Sooners in Norman to save my season, and job?
Can Notre Dame really afford to fire another coach? That said, it's been long three years for Kelly, especially with all that's happened off the field. The death of the kid filming practice, rape allegations, starting QB gets arrested. Those are the headlines that can get you fired quickly, especially if you're not winning.
OU's last nat. championship appearance they had a veteran o-line and 2 rb's go over 1000 yds that season. Assuming Whaley is healthy, could they have similiar results with him and a combo of Clay/Finch?
I don't see Heupel running it enough to get two guys over 1,000 yards. Heck, they didn't have one guy get over 700 last season. Plus that '08 offense was special. This offense might be good, but it's not 2008.
Share at least one interesting tidbit from your chat with Courtney Gardner!
He's taking 6 classes right now, and has to take two more in the summer. He's got a ton of classwork to do before he'll be able to enroll in Norman. He's optimistic, but it's hardly a sure thing.
Do you agree that Bowlsby's first order of business should be to expand the conference to solidify stability and not sit on his hands like beebe and let the conference be blown up? A little forward thinking would be nice for a change..
It would be nice if the Big 12 made a proactive move, instead of always reacting.
What is the most fun you've had while covering The Sooners? Any particular trips, games, interviews, situations, drunken benders, etc. that stand out?
2008 national championship was my favorite experience. The media hotel was unreal. My buddy Berry Tramel nicknamed it "The Mothership" because there was never any reason to leave it. Another notable: proposed to my wife in Miami, the day after the 2009 OU-Miami game. No personal benders, but I have seen a couple.
Who are your top three favorite contributors to the SoonerNation forum? And your three least favorite trolling trolls? lol.
I love everyone who posts on SoonerNation. Except that Brandon Chatmon guy. Not sure about him.
How come we don't here much about our team being a contender? did the drug scandal, kill our media hype? We have an offense that rivals the top in the big12.
I think everyone is waiting to see how TCU will adjust to playing in a big boy conference. But they are one of 5-6 schools I could easily see winning the conference -- provided there are no more drug stings.
Trotter, Which schools should I add to stabilize the conference?
I know the FSU/Clemson rumor is out there -- that would be an unreal coup. Realistically, BYU/Louisville would be decent additions.
do you think that roy finch will finally get more carries after proving he could take more of the load when whaley went down
Actually, no. The Sooners are put out with other parts of Finch's game (notably protecting Landry Jones) and until that gets better, his carries will continue to be sporadic. I love Finch's game, really like him in the interview room, but right now, I can't ever see him being the every down back.
Why doesn't the SoonerNation staff ever have a public get-together during happy hour somewhere and invite SoonerNation members to come join in? Maybe the members would enjoying talking about the Sooners AWAY from the computer for once.
Best idea you've had since offering Justin Blackmon a scholarship. See if you can build a coalition on the board. Otherwise, I'm in.
What's the split on passing/running plays this year with a healthy Dom Whaley?
They like Dom's pass protecting skills, so I don't see his snaps changing from runs to passes that often. Only when the Sooners go 4-5 wide.
How much does the return of Landry Jones impede the development of Blake Bell?
I wouldn't look at it that way. Bell is going to get two years to show what he can do. The way to look at it is, how fortunate is OU to have a fifth-year QB entering his fourth year as a starter? How many of those are out there?
You excited there is another Black opps coming out?
Not a gamer.
What should Sooner fans expect from Arizona transfer Cortez Johnson once he becomes eligible? I know he has great size for corner. But how does he rate with with the current commits and offered prospect, along with the returning players who would be eligible to play in 2013?
In 2013, Aaron Colvin is going to be at one CB, and Johnson is going to be fighting Everett, Powell, Simon, Sanchez for the other spot. I like his chances.
what are your thoughts on a couple of the Kansas boys on the roster - QB Blake Bell (role this year?) LB Jaydan Bird - DE Geno Grissom - DT Jordan Phillips - TE Moose Green - RB Marshal Musil
Bell's role will be similar to last year; Bird is a valuable backup, especially with Wort prone to injury; Grissom can't stay healthy and has been passed by Chuka on the depth chart, but the talent is there; Phillips potential difference maker up front defensively, and the Sooners don't have a lot of those guys right now; Green solid blocking tight end; Musil can always fall back on that stellar 2010 spring game performance.
What is Mike's current confidence level with regard to the improvement of next year's D?
He seems optimistic to me, particularly about the secondary. I think he realizes the defensive line could have some limitations, but he really didn't get a good look at that group with Walker, McGee and King somewhat all sitting out the spring.
What's the best case scenario for Sooner hoops in 2012-2013? I think the best case and a good goal would be 8 or 9 wins in conference.
9 wins would be a phenomenal year. 7-8 wins and an NIT berth is a more reasonable aspiration.
Now that I have some free time during my early offseason, I am curious how you rate the OU softball teams' chances at a national title? SHUT IT DOWN!!!
I don't claim to know a lot about college softball, but with Ricketts and Chamberlain in there, OU seems to be about as good as any team in the country. Plus the WCWS is in OKC, which is always a huge advantage.
I saw Winchester signed a FA deal. Does he have a chance to stick in the NFL?
He could be a solid practice player for them, and who knows, maybe could do something on special teams down the line.
How many all Big12 players do you see from the team this season?
Millard, Landry, Stills, Ikard, Colvin or Hurst, Jefferson. So like 6-8?
How many DT do you think we pick up with this recruiting class and will Justin Manning be one of them or have we lost him to some other school.
DT is a priority in this class. I still like OU's chances with Manning.
The only thing dumber than the media naming a preaseaon All Big 12/All American team is fans talking about it in May...
Just think, the Lindy's and Athlon's of the world already have made those decisions for their preview magazines.
argument earlier on an article. Who has the better first year. Lunt or Florence?
I'll go with Lunt. I think OSU may have something there with him.
Did you get to see the AVENGERS this weekend and if so, what did you think?
No, but it will be the next movie I go see. Is it good? I hear it is.
who ends up with a better overall record over the next 5 years, OU or OSU?
OU, but OSU won't be all that far behind. Look at the records of the two over the last five years. OU is 53-15. OSU is 48-17.
Avengers is way better than my game against OSU... go see it.
Hi Jake, Do Sooners win in Morgantown if they stay healthy? WVU played very well against LSU at home and had 550+ yards against an SEC defense.
I give OU the slight edge today going into that game. But there's a lot of time between now and late November.
Which will come first, a conference championship in baseball, or football, for the Horned Frogs?
Who leaves/retires from OU first? Stoops, Coale, or Kruger?
Very interesting question. In order of who leaves first, I'll go with 1. Kruger, 2. Stoops, 3. Coale.
Why are all these so called ou fans bashing jones saying they want bell, do you think if whaley would have stayed healthy we would not hear this nonesense of having Bell over Jones
It wouldn't be a SoonerNation chat without the Landry haters showing up, too.
I'm a nice guy, leave me alone
Guys, that's all the time left for the chat. Thanks for all the questions -- it was fun. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
