Welcome to, in the humor of Tony Stewart, the worst Monday chat on ESPN.com. I look forward to having a terrible time answering as few of your quetions as I can. I hope you don't enjoy this. Go ahead, fire away.
Dave I am glad to hear Eric is doing well...do they keep black boxes in the Nationwide Cars ...to get a better understanding of what went wrong ?
They do and I already have requested the numbers, although NASCAR usually is reluctant to give them up. Eric is a lucky man. That was one of the hardest, if not the hardest, hits I've seen.
Kyle sais afterNW race leader at the white does not win. Does the "best wheel man" in NASCAR not know what he is talking about?
What Kyle said was the trend until Keselowski pulled a great move to separate himself from the No. 18 in the Cup race.
Was the Ricky Bobby paint job or the Hendrick NW Dega sponsorship the big sponsor news Urt was tweetering about last week? Thanks
Must have been. I thought it was pretty cool, actually.
Hi Newt, even though the driver of the #2 appologized to his "friend and teammate" Kurt in every interview for wrecking him out, do you think Kurt takes his revenge at Darlington or waits for a chase race when it will really hurt?
As I've said all year, Kurt has to behave if he hopes to land a top ride next year. Retaliation and the attention that might bring might not be a wise move.
A win, 2nd at Dega and jumped to 8th in points in 2 weeks. Is it too early to say Rowdy and the #18 team are in championship form?
If you remember, he and JJ were my preseason picks. I haven't backed off that during all of these chats. So yes, it looks like they are getting their act together.
Was Gordon hanging 88 out to dry and Junebug whining about it on the radio the clear sign that all in not well inside the HMS house?
I wouldn't go that far. I don't know all the circumstnaces surrounding why things happened as they did, and until I do it's hard to say one driver hung another out to dry. If Gordon felt Earnhardt could push him to the front, or vice versa, I'm sure he would have stuck with him.
Now that we're past Dega, will all the "Dale is gonna win a race" nonsense go away until the next Dega race?
Nope. I never thought he'd win Dega. Things seldom work out when they appear to be the perfect scenario. My pick was Richmond where he finished second. I'll go with Charlotte or Michigan now.
Newt, in your opinion, on the Danica v. Hornish deal, should Danica have been parked for Darlington just like NASCAR parked Rowdy for taking care of business on Hoeday at Texas?
Not parked, but I do believe she deserves a fine. My comments in the Monday rundown summarize how I feel about that.
Hi David, do you think NASCAR will penalize Stewart for his bizarre, sarcastic "figure 8 racing" remarks after Dega?
Nope. The governing body told me they took the comments as those of a driver upset with his day.
I know every driver in NASCAR would be thrilled to finish 2nd in both Dega races like Rowdy did so how come it feels like a disappointment for us Rowdy Nation people?
Cause, in the words of Ricky Bobby, if you ain't first you're last.
Hey Newt. I was a bit disappointed with the racing at Dega yesterday. The spring race is usually my favorite race of the year to watch, but this one was lacking in excitement. Talladega to me means being nervous, lap after lap, expecting the unexpected. But that wasn't the case. Did NASCAR go too far with the changes to the cooling system? I am not a fan of 2x2 racing, but I think the package that NASCAR mandated went to far to avoid 2x2. Sorry for the mini-novel, but what are your thoughts?
Stewart wasn't happy either if you read the Monday rundown. Yes, it appears NASCAR went too far, and I agree with your conclusion.
Do you think the #88 will be the only Hendrick team car to make the chase?
Nope. 88, 48 and I still believe the 24 will win a couple of races to sneak in.
Hey Newt, did Joey prove once again that he can win in the NW series and he stinks up the Cup series?
He was running pretty good in the Cup race until he was caught up in somebody else's mess. No conclusion there.
How about Rowdy Brad? You name the type of track and he can win! Championship contender?
Can't argue that.
When are people going to realize that Danica is not a good driver? Anyone tpouches her and she has a hissy fit!
She's always had a bit of a temper. But to say she's not a good driver is wrong. She ran top 10 much of Saturday. She is 11th in points after some pretty bad outings to begin the season. I'm reserving judgment on how good or not she can be.
Why doesn't Kyle give a young stud like Ryan Truex or Ryan Blaney a shot in a KBM car?
Because the sponsor wanted him and Kurt. Pretty sipmle.
Jr has the most top tens in Cup and people are still whining about him! It gets old. If he had won this weekend they would have jsut said plate racing doesn't count. Can he do anything right in hater nations eyes?
Probably not short of winning the title... or multiple titles.
Does Smoke just not like you? He was rather annoyed at your questions last week.
He was mad at NASCAR for the caution and his pit crew for not getting him out ahead of Busch at Richmond. I just happened to be in the way. I wasn't even at Dega and he smarted off. That's just him. He'll be smart with you one day and pat you on the back the next. Part of his charm.
Hi David, during the broadcast DW referred to the driver of the #88 as "Junebug" and I wondered why you and other media members don't use that nickname for Dale?
Because Dale Jr isn't a big fan of it and I don't call drivers by their nicknames.
So NASCAR and the fans brought back "pack racing" to help 88 win and it didn't work. What's the next plan to try to help Dale win a race?
Do you think Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host the final Sprint Cup Race someday?
I hope not. I like South Florida for the final event. It's a racier track and they put on a good show.
what do you thing they are going to do about the engine's before they get to daytona in july you thing they will address the issue with the teams before they go down there or are they going to address it the drivers meeting or before even practice start because that was kinda of weird at the early in the race to let the engines go like ryan newman and jj what is you take on this.....
They have to. It'll be scorching hot in July at Daytona and the last thing NASCAR needs is having a lot of engines blow because of a package they came up with.
so did you like the pack racing at talledega becuase i did it was a lot of fun better than the two car tangle and plus lot more entertaiment thru out the hole race......
Gotta agree in this case, even though I'm not a fan of the dancing.
Heading for my first race at Darlington this Saturday. I have Pre Race Pit Passes, any advice for a first time attendee?
Jealous. I had to pull out of that race due to my son's college graduation. I was born there, so I'm a bit partial. Just walk through the camping area for a little local flavor and enjoy the history. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that a lot of tracks do, but the racing usually is great. If you have time, go to Red Bone Alley in nearby Florence and have the shrimp and grits. You wont' be disapointed. You might also like Apple Annies for a post-dinner beverage.
Hey David that Smoke is funny but what he said has truth to it as a fan for thirty years i love to see great racing by all 43 cars not wreck fest's. Think KK5 can keep up his march to the top 12 he is very good at Darllington?
Yes, Smoke is a riot. Sometimes. As for Kahne, he needs to make the top 10 to get in on points or get inside the top 20 and win a few races. I like his chances for the latter more.
What do you think of the fact that the best car (17) didn't win the race because he was too fast? Never seen that before. Just wonder what would've happened had he and Biffle stayed together.
The best car seldom wins if you haven't noticed. As for sticking with the 16, Kenseth admitted he made a mistake and got too far ahead and lost contact. Don't take anything away from Brad K, though. He might have been able to do with Kenseth did most of the day, but he chose to hang back and be patient.
so what was your take on danica first shot at talledega i thought she did really good for her first time out well when she had a little taggle with sam hornish jr at the end lol i well give her a b+ for her first time plus she is going to darlington this weekand and how is she can learn for the nationwide series car to her cup for saturday night race at darlington you take on that
Agree, she did well at Dega except for losing her cool with Hornish. Darlington is a different animal. If she finishes the race I'll be surprised. It's not called Too Tough To Tame for no reason, although it's more tameable since being resurfaced.
Do you think Kurt Busch would have won the race if he hadn't wrecked out?
Ifs and butts were candy and nuts... he would have been a factor as he often is in plate races. To say he definitely would have won is a stretch.
Where do you think Kenseth wins next?
Is Kyle mad that the 18 NW team that he abandoned beat him Saturday?
Nope. He's simply mad he didn't win.
i really thought that jr had a good chance to win yesterday at talledega he had a really good car all day yesterday p.s. i am getting sick about rick hendrick his 200th win who and what race and driver do you thing will get his 200th win i am picking jr becuase i am a jr fan.......
Dega is a crapshoot as we saw at the end, so no reason to think Dale Jr. was going to win. As for Hendrick's 200th, how about Johnson at Dover?
Hi David, hope you can field an early question. Even with Burton's top 10 this weekend is he at risk of losing his seat at RCR? There seems to be a lot of talk about Logano along those lines, but Burton hasn't delivered anything in a long time, even while Harvick has in the same equipment. Even Menard had a big win at Indy.
Have heard nothing to suggest Burton is in danger of losing his ride after this season, but it is early. Might depend on who is available along with does Childress believe Austin is ready for Cup.
Do you think the reason RCR is going downhill fast is because they are spread too thin running 10 teams in all 3 NASCAR series?
Nope. Just a phase. And Harvick hasn't run that badly.
david, do u think rowdys engine may have gotton hot and lost some steam and that allowed him to lose contact with bk...and any news on dodge ?
Not at all. Brad K made a move in Turn 3 to go low and separate himself from Kyle. Pretty smart on his part. No new word on Dodge. Sorry.
why has Logano been a competitor in Nationwide but not a factor in cup?
The competition is a lot tougher in Cup and he's still very young. He's a classic example of expectations being too high and being rushed into Cup too fast.
Don't look now, but Kasey Kahne is coming!
But he's got a long way to go.
Hi Newt, how humiliating is it for Dale Jr. to have been beaten by David Ragan and Trevor Bayne at Dega, one of Dale's best race tracks?
Guess the fields at Daytona were humiliated when Trevor won the Daytona 500 and Ragan won the July race. Get real.
What are the Biff's chances this weekend, how many more races do you think he's going to win and is he a legit contender for the Sprint Cup title?
Biffle is very good at Darlington. Wouldn't hesitate to pick him as a favorite.
Newt, as a long time #24 fan I liked seeing Jeff hang Junior out to dry and didn't appreciate hearing Dale whining about it on the radio. Question: will Mr. H have to get involved since Junior is feuding with teammates Jeff and Kasey too?
I wou8ldn't call it a feud, but if it got to that point Hendrick would step in as he always does.
Kasey Kahne is suddenly 19th, 56 points out of 10th with 16 races to go. Can he make it into the Chase without the help of the wildcard?
It's going to be tougher to make up that final 56 points because most of those drivers are pretty good. Fifty-six is more than a whole race back, but you never know.
I think its time to hit the panic button with the 24 team and i dont see him making the top ten so he will have to be a wild card to make the chase. Do you agree and do you think he makes the chase? Thanks
No panic until after Charlotte. If he wins one of the next two races and has a good finish in the other things won't look so bleak.
Top 5 for this weekend?
Biffle, Gordon, Hamlin, Busch, Edwards.
Do you think Danica Will get a penalty for wrecking sam horinsh
No, but I think she should be fined.
Hey Newt! So, what are we going to talk about today on this "boring" chat while I'm watching NASCAR Now on ESPN? Thoughts on Dinger and Hamlin? Did AJ really not know Hamlin was there?
Glad you asked such a terrible question. AJ appeared to just be having fun and trying to help NASCAR reach its race quota. Seriously, if he did know Hamlin was there and did that it was a pretty bonehead move.
Why was Jeff Gordon angry at Junior and even swore? Bristol?Gordon is a complainer at plate tracks but why get angry?
He does complain a lot after plate races, doesn't he. It's the nature of the beast. A lot of drivers complain. Maybe he's just frustrated he can't recapture that magic that once made him king of plate races.
How is Ernie? Is he still controling his anger?
Glad you asked. Ernie is doing quite well. He has fewer issues these days than Kurt and Tony combined.
How was Keselowski able to pull away and win
He dove down low in Turn 3 and broke the connection with Busch.
Just got out of an office meeting. So it was not DEGA for the 88, so is it Saturday night under the light his first victory or just another top 10.
Not Darlington. Not his best track. Of course, that's probably where it will happen when you think of it that way.
Was Ray Evernham serious about his comment that Jeff Gordon likes money more than winning? Or was there a sarcasm hashtag needed?
Think he was using a bit of Stewart sarcasm. He also was reminding that Gordon likes to win, and if you look at his history many of his wins were for the biggest checks at the biggest venues.
Do you think Keselowki's move could have been done at any other time? Or did the changes to the cars mandated to break up tandem racing make it possible?
I believe it was always there just like the tandem racing was until they discovered it could be done.
Does Smoke think he has not profited from fans who are attracted to the sport because of car wrecks?
Don't think he's given it any thought, but good point.
Your top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for Darlington?
Biffle, Gordon, Hamlin, KyBusch and Edwards (Can I add Kenseth since I left him out earlier?) Longshot? Earnhardt.
Great weekend: seeing KyBu get beat not once but twice!
If that's what pleases you.
Newt, I agree with Smoke. One thing Smoke forgot to add was Dukes of Hazzard jumps. That'd be cool!
There are two more plate races for him to add that.
Will Danica get a penatly for her retaliation wreck against sam horinish
This is the worst chat ever
Does Danica Draw a penatly from NASCAR. And how did Keselowski pull away from the 18
Again, no. But she should. He dove down in Turn 3 to break the connection. Brilliant.
Newt, what's the point of Kurt getting into a 2nd Furniture Row RCR car? Why doesn't Childress just put Kurt in the RCR #31?
Because Burton has another year left on his deal. The 33, btw, will be Dillon's.
Will see Danica Get a penalty from NASCAR that was sure dangerous what she did
No, and when you think that she just saw McClure go into the wall ... well, that says it all.
What did Brad mean by the term "shake and bake"?
He was making fun of Talladega Nights because Kurt ran the Ricky Bobby "Me" paint scheme.
That was a really dumb move that Danica did after the race i hope NASCAR is going to take action.
It was, and they don't plan to.
How realistic is that Furniture Row adds Kurt busch as Smith's teammate and they become the flagship team at Dodge? There seems to be at least some speculation.
Furniture Row to Dodge I could see happening. Not so sure I see Kurt Busch there.
Newt, in your opinion, will we see changes to the restrictor plate package prior to Daytona in July?
We better or there could be a disaster.
Very mad at NASCAR for not penalizing Danica. Do you think somewhere down the road a 12 car will put a 7 in the wall
I believe Hornish is classier than that.
Is it me or did it look like that McClure's car picked up speed as it hit the wall.....
It appeared that way to me and a few others I talked to. Wondering if he hit the gas when going for the brake, or the gas stuck.
This chat is terrible. The format is terrible. I dont like what the fans like.
You're not welcome.
Which is more likely Kurt Busch drives a new 2nd team for Furniture Row or in the 20 for JGR
You left off fourth car for JGR. I might go there.
Hey Newt - AJ seemed very upset post race, and "he didn't know Denny was there". Thoughts on this and was it just racing?
He was upset and he should have known Denny was there. Too much at stake to make a mistake like that.
How the heck did brad break away from kyle busch i have been trying to figure that out.
Once again, he dove down low in Turn 3 to break the draft.
24 was mad at Jr because Jr didnt go with him early in the race. And The 24 repaid him. JR wasnt crying at all. When it happened he came on the Radio and laughed. Also said Jeff had a good memory
Missed that, but thanks.
Where is all the outage and criticism for Danica Patrick for what she did after the race as there was for Kyle at Texas?
Everything Busch does gets blown out of proportion.
My prediction is that Dale Jr. finally breaks the streak at a track that we least expect him to like Darlington or Watkins Glen. He is more of a threat at places other than the plate tracks right now. He could truly win anywhere but Sonoma at this point in time I think. Things are good when 9th place is a huge let down for me as a fan. Thoughts?
If Stewert doesn't like Dega racing was doesn't he sit it out like Mark Martin?
Believe he ddidn't like what it has become, not what it was.
Im really starting to worry about Jeff. This season is reminding me of 2005 where he had such bad luck he ended up missing the chase. Will the wild card save him? Thanks.
Wild Card looks like his best bet. I still see two wins in the 24.
I plan on attending the upcoming Dover race. Is there any way I can get tickets for the Monster Bridge? Thanks.
You'd need to call the track. Pretty sure they sell fast. It's a cool place to watch from. Enjoy the race and be careful at the casino hotel next door.
Do you think NASCAR will be warning Harvick not to mess with Rowdy at Darlington?
Do you think Sam hornish goes back to cup next year? He's a top ten contender in nationwide and he contends for some top 5's too. I Just don't know if i was him if I would rather contend for a championship in Nationwide or for top 15's and some top 10's in cup
That is what Roger Penske told me the plan was after Hornish won at Phoenix last year. Hope it works out. Sam is a good guy.
So how do you like getting asked the same question over and over and having to come up with something different to say each time? Now you know how Tony and all the other drivers feel.
Part of the game.
Is ESPN paying you for this?
I love your Chats.
Hope that is not sarcasm.
"So does the issues that caused cars to run out of fuel early. Catastrophe can't be avoided when that happens while running three-wide in packs at 200 mph."Isn't that up to the teams to figure out their fuel problems?
Depnds on what is causing it.
Correct me if I'm wrong but everyone in the garage area is well aware of Kurts talent and ability....its his temperment that is under the microscope right......
How come you and ESPN refuse to give Smoke credit for winning the championship and showing plenty of speed this year?
Don't think anybody has short-changed Stewart. I certainly haven't. Go back and read my column when he won last year.
Now that the cat is out of the bag, will that trick Brad pulled on Rowdy ever work again? Next time will the 2nd place driver stay low?
Don't think it's a matter of second staying low as it is being ready to stay with the lead car when he jumps low. Hard to anticipate exactly when.
Why do the Hendrick Motorsports employees all refer to Rick as Mr.Hendrick? Im guessing i sign of respect?
You guessed right.
Newt, your chats are the best, then Hinton, Blount and McGee!
Thanks, unless this is Tony sarcasm.
Do you think Danica is ready for Darlington on Saturday?
You're never ready for Darlington until after you've driven her a few times.
Methinks you still have a grudge against Smoke for the whole bumbling idiot thing last fall.
Seriously, I like Stewart. He's great for the sport.
Thanks for all the -- ok. serious now -- great qustions. I really did enjoy a rare Monday chat. As usual, I'm available on Twitter at DNewtonespn if you have more questions. I'll try to get to them.
