Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

what's up. Y'all ready to roll? We can talk Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, Mark Cuban, Rick Carlisle, SMU hoops - who woulda thunk it - or whatever else pops into your mind.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will we see Yu Darvish become a 20 game winner?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:07 PM)

Not this year. The Rangers haven't had a 20-game winner since Rick Helling in the 90s. Eventually, I think Yu will get there, but winning 20 requires more than skill. it requires luck, a good team, run support and health

Long time cowboys fan...Art [via mobile]

Should the Cowboys move on without Tomorrow next season if he doesn't take them to the Superbowl?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:10 PM)

Is it Tony Romo's fault if they don't win the Super Bowl this year? What if he throws 6 touchdowns and passes for 380 yards in the NFC title game and they lost 45-42. Is that Romo's fault? I've been pretty consistent about this. If everyone did his job as well as romo, the Cowboys would have some playoff success. He;s not perfect, but he's a lot better than most.

Roderick Autry_Mansfield [via mobile]

Why the Cowboys want get a real DT & let J. Ratliff play end or he needs a real backup?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:11 PM)

It has been several years no and they seem to have no inclination to do it. Obviously, they think his best position in NT. They like his quickness and ability to shoot gaps and be a disruptive force.

daniel (dallas)

still depressed from mavs quick playoff exit. has anybody brought up the option of not signing deron williams for the max. what about siging hibbert, drogic and/or oj mayo? i question siging d-will to a max contract because we seen what dirk is with an all-star point guard, i feel dirk is better with a viable big man. (with good hands) hibbert's still young and i dont think he'd require the 15mil chandler got. drogic learned the pick and roll from the master(nash) and oj could create his own shot. i like filling 3 holes instead of 1. thanks

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:12 PM)

Nope. Hibbert is restricted, so the Pacers would match any offer. Drogic is ok, but he's not close to being Deron Williams. OJ Mayo, to me, is barely above just a guy. He's not close to being an NBA star.

Adam (Toronto)

Think Dallas has made a mistake by not properly addressing the pass rush? Or will the improved secondary help make up for that?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

There was no one to take. They could've taken Fletcher Cox. He was the best pass-rusher in this draft, but he's not supposed to eventually be one of the best pass rushers ever. If so, he'd have gone in the top 5 easy. Instead, he went 12. They took a pass rusher in the 3rd round, but he isn't going to help for a year or two. The secondary is much better on paper and should help the pass rush. You can't fix all of your needs in one season. It's a process.

Raul (rio grande city Texas)

JJT, I know we are still far from training camp.... but do you feel that something positive is going to come out of this years training camp? Is there a chance that the Boys hit on pass rushers with these rookie free agents?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

When the club tells you the 3rd round pick is a project, then I expect NOTHING this season from him

Kris Park Hills,MO [via mobile]

Josh Hamilton has SO much talent. How much does the contract year effect a guy who got such a late start in his career? Do you think he puts up a career year knowing this could be his last big contract?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

If he stays tea;thy, he'll put up numbers because he has profound talent. The question has never ever been talent. It's health and drug-related issues. If he didn't have those, he'd already have his $150 million

Mark (Cary NC)

Good Afternoon JJT. I know Claiborne was the best CB in the draft - but is he SO much better than Kirkpatrick from Alabama to warrant giving up the 2nd rounder to get him?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:17 PM)

yes. No one has ever said Kirkpatrick is one of the best cornerbacks to ever hit the draft. They say that about Claiborne. No one has ever compared Kirkpatrick to Deion. Several folks have compared Claiborne to Deion

joe m (Auburn)

JJT! In you opinion based on what you have seen last weekend. Are wilbur and Crawford going to be the type of players to make a difference on this team or just another reach by JJ and Co.?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:19 PM)

I boycotted the rookie minicamp so I could watch the Mavs play Game 4, so I didn't see any of those guys. I covered the NFL for so long - 11 seasons - that I don;t get hyped about the Underwear Olympics. Training camp, however, is another matter. You can watch guys work and hit at TC. There's no hitting at these minicamps

Alejandro (Tucson, AZ)

What are you expectations for this season? I only ask you because you seem to be more realistic than others. thank you

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:20 PM)

I can't really have expectations until we know who's on the roster. Unless something goes wrong, the Cowboys will be in the playoff hunt at Thanksgiving. Then we'll figure out if they can finish. It's the same story every year for these dudes

jr(mp) [via mobile]

do u think the texas rangers need to make a deal for better 1 baseman (a die hard ranger fan)

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

Moreland has been hitting the ball pretty well lately They also use 1B to rotate Young and Napoli into the lineup against lefties. You can't have high-priced stars at every spot. You need some bargains. For now, he's a bargain

beevomav (dallas)

Chandler just had a (1) point game against the Heat..Meanwhile Melo had to score (40) for them to win..Doesn't this prove the Knicks overpaid for Tyson.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:23 PM)

I wouldn't say they overpaid. He was defensive player of the year - not offensive player of the year. He does a lot of stuff that doesn't reveal itself in a box score. Most teams would be better with him in the lineup

Jason (Dallas)

Do you think Dallas is an attractive NBA destination for free agents? It would seem to be, but then I've heard many local pundits say no big name free agents want to come here.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:24 PM)

Players go where they can get PAID - first and foremost. Then they think about how good the team and the city is. If the Mavshave cap room they'll be desirable. The Lakers, Bulls, Knicks and Celtics are always high because of their tradition and their cities. Dallas is probably next on the list.

Justin (Lewisville)

Do you think Carlisle will definitely be back next year? Was Cuban reluctant to give Carlisle an extension because the one he gave Avery blew up in his face after he let the Randy Galloway's of the world talk him into that deal?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

If I had to pout a percentage on it, I'd say 85 percent. mark Cuban reminds me of one of those guys who always thinks he's the smartest dude in the room, so you can never, say never. It would be a mistake to let Carlisle go.

Jesse (Texas)

Are you running late or do i not understand how to work this chat?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

did u figure out the answer?

Steve (Syracuse)

Ronald Leary--you think he has a shot to be a starter? Some say he had a 3rd round grade if not for the knee.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:28 PM)

Sure. Jerry has been talking to him quite a bit. Whenever the owner is intrigued it's a positive - and it's not like either of the guys they signed in FA are untouchable

Jordan (Ft. Worth)

Is Tyson Chandler being so built up by the Mavs collapse this season that he's now gone from very good role championship player to extremely overrated? Not to say they shouldn't have resigned him, but I think some are going overboard on his impact.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

I don't think so. You saw what Ibaka did to the Mavs. You can't downplay his role and his importance on last year's team. But he's a great role player. He's not a star. And he doesn't have a defined offensive game. But he's a leader and he gives a team spirt and energy. On the right team, it's wonderful. Put it like this: If you put LeBron on the Bobcats they might have won 21 games instead of 7. With Tyson, they may have won 10 because his skill set is more noticeable on a good team

Gavin (Maryland)

As a lifelong Cowboys fan, I'm somewhat miffed about the Tony Romo hate among the fandom. It really baffles me. They weren't even in the picture for a long time after Aikman left. I get he lost a few games, but it seems like he won a lot more. My question is, can you enlighten me some on why he in particular is such a polarizing figure in football because its hard for me to understand? Many thanks.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

It's really pretty easy. People don't believe he takes the game seriously enough and he hasn't won in the postseason like Aikman and Staubach. That's the standard around here just like Starr and Favre is the standard in Green Bay and Young and Montana is the standard in SF

Darren (Colleyville)

Would you go out of your way to bring Jason Kidd back? He sounds like he's content to being a backup but that he doesn't what to come too cheaply. How much is he really worth at this point of his career?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

Yes, it the Mavs sign Deron Williams. He can play 18-20 minutes a game and he'd be more than fine

Will (Texarkana, TX)

Can Mike Jenkins or Orlando Scandrick play free safety?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

Nope. Neither is big enough or thick enough. Jenkins can't stay healthy at corner

Rick (TX)

Are you gonna let your kids play football? What do you think about that conversation?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:38 PM)

my 8YO plays and is about to start his second season after a year of flag. There is some inherent danger in almost everything we do. He truly loves the game. He asked me to play twice before I gave him the go-ahead. You wonder if you're opening Pandora';s Box, but when kids show passion for something I think you're obliged to let them within reason. I don't think you can put bubble wrap around your kids. I often joke that kids try to accidentally kill themselves 10 times a day whether it's jumping down the stairs or climbing a tree. I'm concerned about the concussion information and I think it's important to be aware of teaching your kids how to react in those situations and discuss it with the coaches and make sure they're learning proper technique even at the youngest ages. It's definitely a tough question. I wrote about it in 2010 at the Dallas Morning News. You might be to google it.

jr(mp) [via mobile]

what is thick enough they can cover no ones a big hitter know in the nfl dont want to pay tha fine

JJT
  (1:42 PM)

Safeties force the run. Your body has to be thick enough to play in the midst of all that traffic. Again, Jenkins can't stay healthy playing corner

Nathan (Longview Tx)

I am sure to have missed you chats, but I am dying to know what your thoughts were about Dallas trading up to get Claiborne.

JJT
  (1:43 PM)

I thought it was great. I believe in adding elite players at premium spots. That's what they did. He was the No.1 defensive player on every board

Mike (Dallas)

Even if the Mavs are lucky enough to land Deron Williams, don't they have the issue of having enough cap space to surround Dirk and Deron with a capable supporting cast? The two of them alone aren't going to being serious contenders.

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

When you ask the most beautiful woman in the world to dinner, you'll figure out how to afford a new suit, rent a limo and take her to the finest restaurant in town once she says yes

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Let me correct your earlier statement: If many of the Cowboys played at 80% of Romo's level of play, they would be a competitor to possibly go deep into the playoffs.

JJT
  (1:44 PM)

that, bro, is your statement - not mine

Fletcher Cox (Ole Miss)

Need to remind your readers I only had 5 sacks last year. 5. Heck your whipping boy Spencer had 6.

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

That's what I mean, bro. It's not like you're Reggie White or Bruce Smith or even Julius Peppers coming out

NYC Cowsheep (NYC)

For the 2012 Season, the #3 Cowboys WR will be _________ .My hope is that Danny Coale wins that spot. Your Thoughts?

JJT
  (1:45 PM)

i'm not sure he's on the team yet. Robinson didn't arrive until September. Coale will be in the mix, but I can't get hyped over a 5th round pick

jr(mp) [via mobile]

did u hear that suga got arrested for killing tupac

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

don't believe that's true...lol

Teon (Richmond, va)

Would it be smart for the Cowboy to not sign anymore free agents, besides maybe a TE and see what the Wr's on teh roster could do?

JJT
  (1:46 PM)

nothing wrong with adding talent and competition. You never know when u might find that guy like Romo or Miles Austin

Corey (D.C.)

Last week you posted my comment saying I thought you were so rude to your chatters that I couldnt tune into your chat anymore. Out of curiousity I peaked in the room and see you are not even close to your usual jerk-self. I mean that as a compliment. Your insight is appreciated, and Im glad to see you answer politely instead of calling everyone a moron, when they know more than you think. Be blessed.

JJT
  (1:50 PM)

Thanks, but I don't think i'm any different than I was last week or the week before that or the week before that. Sometimes, it's perception. Or someone doesn't agree with an answer, so they get upset. I do me. If you change to make some folks happy, then another group will be mad and you'll have to change to make them happy and so on and so on. That said, I'm glad you're enjoying this week's chat

Jeff (Middletown, Ohio)

With Romo and Orton signed to multi-year contracts, is there a need to carry a 3rd QB this upcoming season? Maybe use the spot for diamond in the rough pass rusher?

JJT
  (1:51 PM)

It has been done before. You cut McGeee and keep a developmental QB on the practice squad and call him up if u need him. Good question. It'll come down to how much the like the guy they want to keep compared to McGee.

Mike (Dallas)

If the Mavs don't land Deron Williams, then what is their next best option? It doesn't seem like there are many worthwhile free agents so do the Mavs save their cap room for the following summer or try to pull off some big trades?

JJT
  (1:52 PM)

sounds like a plan. You don't just want to spend money to spend money, but you would hate to waste another season of Dirk. He can't play forever

Daniel (Dallas)

JJT what did you major in?

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

journalism at The Ohio State University

Lance (NYC)

JJT don't listen to the haters about "your rudeness" - I've emailed you several times over the years & EVERY time you've written back- you da man!

JJT
  (1:53 PM)

thanks. No worries. It's all good. Thoughtful debate is a positive

Corey (D.C.)

Rotoworld just released their Offensive Line rankings, and had the Cowboys #16 in the NFL. On the surface, without additional investigation, do you agree with the ranking? They claim they have excellent tackles, but have major issues up the middle. What are your thoughts on that analysis?

JJT
  (1:55 PM)

I don't pay much attention to Rotoworld. Just my opinion. Just because someone makes a list doesn't make it worthy. It depends on who's doing the ranking. I think you and I would agree they have good tackles, average guards and an sub-par center. No breaking news there.

Nastygee (Italy)

So if the Cowboys didn't address the DT position in free agency or the draft this year, will they do it next years and who are the top FA and draft available DT's next year?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

you're asking me to answer a question about a season that hasn't taken place yet. I'm good bro, but not that good

Talon (Fort Wayne, IN)

Do you think Romo gets a bad rap because the defense has been so bad the last few years. Eli gets all the credit in the world, I don't think he is that much better than Romo, it's just that his defense is far superior at the end of the season. What are your thoughts?

JJT
  (1:56 PM)

in the playoffs Eli has been sensational; Romo has not. Eli has played a huge role in each of the giants' SB wins. He ain't trent differ

Jordan (Ft. Worth)

Do you think the Cowboys were proper in their assessment that the secondary was the top priority to fix in the offseason? They have spent most of their resources on that area so hopefully that will greatly improve the pass defense.

JJT
  (1:57 PM)

there were no pass rushers to spend money on, so it was the next best thing to do. No problem.

Corey (D.C.)

More people know and follow rotoworld than Jean-Jacques Taylor...just FYI.

JJT
  (1:58 PM)

I just said I didn't follow it. I follow Pro Football Focus and Football outsiders. It doesn't make it right or wrong. It's just what I do

Daniel (Dallas)

JJT were you always interested in writing? or more into covering sports and with that came journalism? i want to go back to school and cover sports. thanks

JJT
  (1:59 PM)

since I was about 7 or 8. There's no need to go back to school in my opinion. You might need a course or two for the basics, but lots of folks have blogs. Reading and writing and doing is far more important than spending money on a journalism degree

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Just make it a point that the losses are rarely due to Romo. He keeps blowouts from being blowouts and wins games that should be losses. Dude is least of the problems for the Cowboys.

JJT
  (2:00 PM)

u can't give him the credit for the wins and blame the losses elsewhere. it doesn't work that way. They missed playoffs 3 of 4 years. He gets some of the blame for that

JJT
  (2:01 PM)

gotta go get my lil man fitted for a tux. we'll chat next week. Peace. You can hot me on Twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas if you want to continue the conversation
