Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel, let's talk golf for an hour! Rickie beats Rory to get his first win, Tiger misses cut for the second time at Quail Hollow... which is the bigger story?

Alex (Anaheim)

Fowler's playoff shot to within 4 feet of the cup: swing of the tournament?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

Oh yeah! Especially with Rory having yet to play and being 15 yards closer and having a better angle. No doubt, that shot is the one he'll remember for the rest of his life.

Keith (Milwaukee)

What are some of secrets on how to read greens so well?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

What kind of greens? Bermuda, Bent, Poa, Tiff Eagle. You have to start with what kind of greens you're putting on first. There's a lot more involved than just, am I looking at them wrong.

John (Sacramento, Ca)

Do you think that Tiger will be more comfortable at a links style course with his monster drives and will be able to work the ball a little more? or is he just average everywhere he goes now?

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

Well since his problem has not been his driving, per se (it's his putting), I don't think it matters where he tees it up. If you can't putt, you can hit fairways and greens all day.

Stees (NC)

What are the chances Tiger makes the cut this week?

Stees (NC)

Who would you take this week? Tiger or Colt Knost?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

I think Tiger has a 50/50 shot at the cut. It feels almost like he's back to square once after his performance at the Masters and Wells Fargo. I'd take Colt Knost right now.

Aaron L. (Missouri)

Will all orange be the new Sunday red???

Rickey Fowler (Quail Hollow)

I'll now be selling all kinds of orange outfits!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

And remember how when guys started wearing baseball caps people complained about how unprofessional it looked? Me either, but I've heard from the older players. Now flip the hat around backwards after the round... People are losing their minds at how much they hate it. Makes me laugh.

Diddles (ATL)

Michael,if you were a betting man, and had to put your money on one of these outcomes, would you say that tiger is more likely to WIN this week at the Players or Miss the Cut.

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

If I had a gun to my head in a vegas casino, I take Tiger to miss the cut. But I don't bet on golf just so that won't happen! ;)

Adam (Work)

A golfer tweeted recently (I think Westwood) about how he thinks that since the new groove requirements have been introduced the cut of the rough has been much lower. Is this coincidence or are courses intentially making the rough shorter so we can still see amazing shots?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

yeah it was Westy, and I think some of it has to do with the weather some of these places have gotten over the last year. But there is a bit of truth to what Lee said. I think the tour is still trying to find that happy medium to where the rough is penal but guys might try a crazy shot, they just haven't gone the harder route yet

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Creamsicle gets his first Tour victory. Is he a lock for the Ryder Cup, and which major suits him best?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Absolutely put on the Ryder Cup right now, even if it's as a captains pick. His record in match play going back to his Walker Cup days is too good not to. I can't wait to see him at the PGA Championship this year.

derek (Iowa)

OK first Duner, now Fowler. Who will be the next first time winner?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Watch out for either Sang-Moon Bae or Seung-Yul Noh

Diddles (ATL)

Shoot me straight, Michael. Is it time for Tiger to fire Sean Foley, he seems about as confident with the club in his hands as Phil Mickelson hitting righty on #4 at Augusta

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Someone asked me this at breakfast this morning and I said it's a good thing that Foley still has Mahan and Rose because he's not gonna last the year with Tiger unless he gets at least more wins

Dustin Alonzo (DA) (New Orleans)

How many majors does Rickie Fowler end his career with? McIroy?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

WAY too early for that, but injury free I give Rickie 4-5 and Rory 10-12

Shoshana (Boston)

Rickie, Rickie, Rickie! Now can we let him be a good young player and enjoy the win without moving on to pressing about when his next win will come, or the first major?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

did you see the last question? It's like when someone gets married and at the reception some idiot always says, "So... when you gonna start having kids?!"

derek (Iowa)

Bubba & Ricky the new face of the PGA Tour? Americans that is....

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

Without question

Matt (Chicago)

If Tiger wins only one more tournament this year, which one do you think he wins?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

Dan Mataro (Kappa Sig)

MC, Does Tiger make the top 8 for the Ryder Cup team or is he a captain's pick again?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Captains Pick, but I think he's gonna miss just by the skin of his teeth

Shoshana (Boston)

Seve has 5 majors, Phil has 4. Nobody since 1980 other than Tiger has more than 6. If Rory has Phil's career he'll be one of the top 5-10 players of all time

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

And he will be

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Briny Baird! /probably not

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

Love Briny, but probably not

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Okay, Mike here's one then: Who gets a major first: Rickie or Donald?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

WOW!! That's a tough one now that the monkey is off Rickie's back. I say Luke first but Rickie wins the one after!

Adam (Work)

If Woods does get rid of Foley, does he go out alone or will he bring along another teacher for the ride? If he gets someone, who?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

First Bubba, now Rickie (whose coach died a year ago), I say he goes it alone for a while

CP (Charlotte)

I liked the tee they used on 17 this week. More flag-hunting as opposed to bailing out right and trying to get up and down. You think they'll use that tee for all 4 rounds at the PGA in 2017?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

I sure hope so. I like seeing guys have at least a birdie chance on 17. It's WAY too boring if every guy is bailing out and just trying to get up and down for par. But I think the PGA will use the left tee box at least once.

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger was swinging the club really well heading into Augusta, wonder what changed?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

One bad swing, first hole at the Masters, and it was gone. We've all been there when it just vanishes and nothing but bad habits feel right, we're just not used to seeing it for so long with Tiger

derek (Iowa)

Sorry its Rickie. Who wins again this year. Tiger, Rickie or Phil

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I'll say Rickie but I won't be surprised if Phil has a chance coming down the stretch at the US Open this year

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

The guys from CBS were all over the fact that "this will be the first of many" for Fowler. I don't buy it...I just don't think that he has 'IT'. He just seems like one of those pro's who seem to be just happy to be there and are concerned about being liked. Tiger,Phil and Vijay were fairly unpopular among the tour players and look at their records. Fowler just doesn't have that swagger or assassins attitude. Toughts?

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger has gone it alone twice, once in between Butch and Hank, and second after Hank (which prob shouldn't count), with poor results. Most people do better with a coach, and he's had one since 2.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

I got some news for you, just because Tiger says he's working on his own publicly, doesn't make it true.

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

tdiddy... where you get your information about Tiger, Phil, and Vijay not being liked by other tour members is not based on fact. So don't say things from that dark stinky place also called rumorville. Rickie has that swagger and then some. Find the transcript from his post round interview and you'll read how he said he expected the win to come earlier and he was starting to feel the pressure. He's not satisfied just being out here. And you're hearing this directly from me who got it directly from Rickie.

Adam (Work)

Do you like Rickie's golf attire? I personally love it. Instead of staring the business casual look all day, we get to see a little life out there. I could do without the backwards hat though...

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

I love it. I can't pull it off myself (other than the hat) but too many people that say, "we need to grow the game" say, "he shouldn't do that with his hat". Oh yeah, then WHO are you trying to grow the game with, 70 year olds?

The Drizzmeister (Cleveland,OH)

Comment: With the recent concerns in the NFL regarding concussions and player safety, I think the NFL should work directly with an equiptment engineer to ensure the best equiptment to prevent injuries such as concussions. The helments should have some sort of spring system inside of the helmets to reduce the force of impact taken by these hits.

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

As soon as golfer start wearing helmets I'll get right on that. For now, I'll defer to the NFL chat. WHOOPS

Shoshana (Boston)

Ok speaking of people actually having a bad year (look it's not actually a bad year if you have a win, a 2 and a t3) what is going on with Watney?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

He had three good rounds last week and then crashed and burned on the 7th (made a triple with an o.b. AND water ball) but I think after talking to him ealrier in the week there may have been some personal stuff going on along with the injury that he's fixed. He'll be just fine by the playoffs

Adam (Work)

I heard you took TW's ball on Friday?!?!? Is this true? Ha ha Seriously, has that EVER happened before with a free drop/no penalty?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

yes BUT there was always an undisputed witness that saw someone take the ball, in this case NO ONE saw the ball being stolen and it ain't on ebay. If he would have made the cut on the number it would have been a HUGE story

Shoshana (Boston)

Who do you like other than Lee Westwood this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

I'm gonna pick Rory to win in my Expert Picks... which means he has no chance! HAHA

derek (Iowa)

Do you have a darkhorse pick for the PLAYERS?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

for that one you'll have to wait and see who my Super Sleeper is!

tdiddy (winnipeg ) [via mobile]

Why do they call Phil FIGJAM Why did no one come to Tigers defense during the scandal? Why did no one back up Vijay during the Sorenstam hullaballo? Come on Mike, I'm sure Nicklaus wasn't Mr.Popularity back in the day either...I know you can't be %100 candid, but c'mon. I still love you and your chats though.

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

If you know all this...? Phil wasn't the first one called that there was another, it was just put on Phil but that ain't where it came from. What golfer in their right mind is gonna go on tv and say, "Tiger, it's cool. I got your back." after the scandal. And same thing with Vijay, in the PC world we live in and with the amount of sponship dollars on the line for these guys, who is gonna come out publicly and say, "HEY WE'RE ALL WITH VIJAY TOO!" Seriously are you that naive? People have "brands" to protect.

Sand Bagger (Las Vegas)

Well played last week. I hear you carry a 15 handicap and shot 77-78 in successive rounds. Is it tough keeping a straight face when the losers hand you their money?

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

The truth is I shot 77-77. But what you're not telling people is I shot 91 two days before, and 93 the round before that! And the guys I played with the first day were only ONE down going into the back! So no sandbagging here... and you still owe me $5!

Adam (Work)

Do you know what a player does in the evening after they win a tourny? Do they go out with friends, head home, or something else? I have always been curious because I know if it were me I would go all Darren Clarke on the evening and see the sun come up!

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Rickie had two "meet and greet" cocktail things to do then had a jet to catch, so I don't think he partied too hard especially since he wants to win this week too. He's also not a big party guy to begin with. It truly depends on the player, but if they have the week off after a win... oh boy!

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Ps. I'll bet you dinner that Ricky gets no majors in the next 4 years. But you will have to come to Winnipeg to collect. And I'l have to ask my wife if it's weird that I have to buy an ESPN employee dinner.

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

all that crap you threw at me earlier AND I have to come to Winnipeg to collect. HA... NO CHANCE. I did a comedy show there years ago on New Year's eve and it was -21 when I landed. Rickie wins, send me a gift card!!

Nick (Washington DC)

Do you think Bubba has the killer instinct to become one of the all time greats? Or do you think he will get satisfied, and have a mediocore career?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

I think he has a killer instinct, but he wants to do it on his terms. That will drive people nuts and it already is, but like Sinatra... he did it his way.

Shoshana (Boston)

Rickie def wants it, Bubba I'm not as sure about

Keith H (Seattle)

Michael, for those not getting the backwards hat, here's some news for them: It started over 20 years ago with a guy named Ken Griffey Jr. It's time to get in the right century.

Shoshana (Boston)

If you want the average age of golfers to come down south of the early bird special, you have to stop acting like the high point of behavior and dress was 1950

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

And they used to smoke on tv too

Shoshana (Boston)

Well fair point, although I'd imagine that most coaches would want leak the fact that they were working with TW somehow :)

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

And if they leaked it, then they get fired before they ever get paid

CP (Charlotte)

How long were you waiting for a call from Westy?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

still waiting! LOL

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Now I'm fired up! Can we still be friends? Come back to Rumors anytime, it's still there.

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

No matter if we agree or disagree, I'm friends with everyone who come into this room. Can't lie, Rumor's is a great comedy club and I had an awesome week there. Just froze my butt off!

Nick (Washington DC)

Do you really think Rory will get ten to twelve majors? Ernie Els won his first US open when he was only a couple years older and he only has three Majors nearly twenty years later!

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

But Ernie had Tiger, and he knew he couldn't beat him. He even said it. Who's Rory got?

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Man there are so many more good questions!! Alas, time for me to go make some more videos and talk to guys out here at TPC. Thanks for the fast hour. Same time, same place next week? COOL!ESPNCaddie@espn.comTwitter... @ESPNCaddieStay in touch!!
