Hello everyone, welcome to the chat. Let's get started.
How did the Isaac visit go last weekend? Any insight on what school(s) he might be leaning towards? What about Cravens? Is it looking like he'll commit come June?
All indications are that the visit went well and Ty got to spend a lot of time with the players. His parents also got more comfortable with the school and the area. I don't get a real clear sense of which way he's leaning between USC and Michigan, even his mom talked about how the two schools are so different and that's what makes the decision harder. Cravens will commit to a school on June 6th and at this point I think it will be USC.
Garry,What are your thoughts on USC top offensive targets for 2013?
I would put the two top running backs; Ty Isaac and Justin Davis, as well as the in-state receiver with an offer, Darrell Daniels.
How many receivers can USC use at one time, and how many tight-ends are eligible at the same time, do offenses ever use three tight-ends at the same time? I ask because it seems that if USC can get any kind of running game going they will be almost impossible to stop. Do you agree?
I think Kiffin is a very progressive coach in this regard. He will use 4 WR's on one play and then 3 TE's on the next. He likes to mix things up, line guys up in different spots. It's not so much about running different plays, it's about running them from different formations with different personnel to help dictate mismatches with the defense. When Kiffin is on his game, that kind of strategy is hard to stop.
Hi Garry!! Should we at all be worried that Cravens wants to take a couple of visits to Big 10 country before he announces in June? Or do you think these are just visits he wants take for the sake of traveling?
You can never say "don't worry at all" but I don't get much of a sense that there is anything for USC fans to worry about here. His cousin, Joe Mathis, took trips to both schools and encouraged Su'a to do the same. All indications are that he will take those trips, have a good time and then come home and commit to USC on June 6th.
There are many potential benefits of USC that recruiters use to draw athletes to move across the country to play football. What do you think is the biggest inticement: the football program, the academics, great tradition, the location/weather, or other? FIGHT ON!
The coaches will make sure to emphasize all those benefits when talking to a recruit but if I had to pick one that stands out, I think it is the tradition of the football program. Any player who is being recruited to play football at USC has the sport as an important part of their life plans (even if it is simply a means to get a degree) and the USC tradition of the sport will play a huge role in their decision.
Garry,What's your guess on the next 2 kids to commit to SC?
Justin Davis and Su'a Cravens.
What date is Justin Davis announcing, and what do you think USC's chance are?
May 17th is when he will announce. I like SC's chances.
Can you compare and contrast LK and PC coaching styles and philosophies, especially when it comes to game day preparation, traveling and recruiting.. Fight On!
The main outward difference is their personalities. Carroll is more open and effusive with the public while Kiffin comes across more reserved. Many of the current players, however, will tell you they know Kiffin as a person much more than they knew Carroll. Both have such a similar focus with how they prepared after two seasons as USC coach, so dedicated with attention to detail on trying to get the program back to great heights. Both also want control and pay attention to most every detail you can imagine.
What two school is Caverns visiting?
Michigan and Nebraska
Hi Garry -- How concerned are you about Robert Woods' ankle? A little disconcerting that it's still seems to be lingering nearly year (and a surgery) later. Think he'll be full speed by the fall?
It would certainly be nice if this was no longer an issue. I completely agree with the decision by the coaches to sit him out all spring to give the ankle the best chance possible to be healed by the time fall camp rolls around. He set a school and conference record for receptions on a bad ankle, I wonder what he can do on a good one?
What are USC chances with Max Redfield, Priest Willis, and Tahaan Goodman?
They are certainly in on all three players and I wouldn't rule out any of them ending up at USC. But there has also been a lot of scuttlebutt recently about LSU with the three of them so keep an eye on the Tigers.
Hi Gary and Welcome back. I know its a good sign that Ty Isaac and his parents came out here on their own dime. I hear he is considering 3 and I know Michigan is one. Who is the other school and do you know who would be the faster/quicker back between him and Justin Davis.
Yes, it was a good sign for USC that Ty had his parents come back out to see the school on their dime. I just don't see them doing that unless his interest is legit. He threw in Notre Dame as a school he's also considering but most recruiting people seem to think this one is SC or Michigan. Neither Ty or Justin Davis are what you would call "speed" backs, both are fast enough but they have pretty good size too.
Why is USC holding off offering Khaliel Rogers?
They are telling him that they need to be real careful with the reduced number of available scholarships. He's OK with that right now because he has a lot of interest in USC and two of his buddies are already committed.
Do you think USC can get offensive tackle Christian Morris?
It sure sounds like he is interested but it's hard to say how legit that is when he hasn't taken a visit. He's saying all the right things though.
How many defensive backs do you think USC gets? 5 or 6? Thank you
Right now I would say four but I could easily see that number going to five, especially if one of those five is Su'a Cravens. One way it could go up to 6 is by bringing in a bunch of guys who could end up at other spots, such as Su'a or Max Redfield.
In the last three recruiting class the coaching staff have done a great job but have missed on some positions of need in 2010 it was safety and linebacker (Riley, Lofton, Shirley, Zumwalt), 2011 it was defensive tackle (Richardson, Grimble and Simmons), and 2012 offensive tackle. Do you think with what happened on signing day with Kyle Murphy, Andrus Peat, and Kyle Dodson that the the coaching staff with consider back up plans?
You are asking about one of the true "arts" of recruiting. It's always hard to balance waiting at the end with the need to have back-up plans. Last year was a tough one at OL for the Trojans as all three names waited until the final day before announcing, it's hard to have other kids on hold right up until signing day like that because those kids usually have other decent options as well.
When Is Ty Isaac expected to announce?
Ty hasn't given any firm date for an announcement. Here was his recent quote "I don't have a specific date, I don't want to be one of those guys that sets a date and then have to make a decision by then. I'm just going to let it happen. If I knew where I wanted to go right now I would have already ended it, so I'm just going to wait and see."
When is Justin Davis committing and Whats ur take on our 5 commitments not a fan of early commitments because they always tend not to stick prefer them doing it in the fall .
Justin Davis will announce his choice on May 17th. I think the value of the early commits rests mostly with the kid himself, is he someone who is truly making a commitment or is he putting a commit in his back pocket while he continues to take a look around? I get the sense that all the early commits for USC this year are solid.
I want ur honest opinion with a straight up answer ! USC record at the end of the year will be ? And what bowl will they be playing ?I predict 14-1 with USC going to the Rose Bowl , not sure but i believe USC will lose to a team that they werent supposed too
Will Lane Kiffin have the guts to put Blackwell ahead of Farmer as the #3 WR? If so, will Farmer transfer after this season?
If Blackwell is outplaying Farmer then I think Kiffin would do it. So far we haven't seen that yet but, then again, we haven't seen a whole lot from Farmer yet either due to injuries.
If SC does not win the National Championship, is 2012 viewed as an abject failure?
I hope not. Of course, it all depends on what happens if they fall short of a national title. Does the team go to the Rose Bowl or do they go 6-6? That's a big difference in how they would be viewed.
USC potentially can get more then the 4 DB they would like to take.lets just say they end up with Goodman , Hawkins , Cravens , Willis , Redfield , Johnson , Hargraves ? Would they take them all? If not which ones do u think would be left out ?
Yes, that reality could happen, I don't know if they would take 7 but they could take a real good haul from that group since there are players in there who could end up at multiple spots (Su'a could end up at RB, Redfield could be at WR, etc.)
Is Walker really the starting LT?
As of right now, yes.
Hi Gary, what is the decision date for Sua Cravens? What schools has he narrowed it down to as well? Many thanks.
June 6th, his mom's birthday. USC is considered the leader but he will visit Nebraska and Michigan so it stands to reason that those are two other legit options.
What's the latest news on Tee Shepard?
Nothing confirmed. Rumblings are that he's waiting on a decision from USC, his first choice, before moving forward with any other plans (Washington and Fresno State are thought to be two other options, he also visited UCLA). USC has not stepped forward with a firm offer, presumably because they are waiting for info and clearance on his medical situation. That is what we're hearing from the Shepard camp.
Why is USC recruiting for two wide receivers this recruiting class? Even if Robert Woods leaves early for the NFL next year there will be enough depth if USC takes one wide receiver. Don't you think that scholarship should be used on a position of need like offensive tackle, defensive end, or another defensive back?
With the way multiple receivers are used these days, you can always be sure the Trojans won't fall short in numbers when recruiting that spot. I do think they end up with two in this class.
Garry, still in shock over Seau. What stands out about that 89 defense in your mind? That defense was pretty loaded with Junior, Ryan, Owens, Gibson, Ross, Carrier, etc.
With all due respect to the others, the d-line is what I always remember from that defense. Owens, Gibson and big Tim Ryan, what a stud he was. Great group.
With the NFLs sudden high drafting of maybe not quite 1st rd talents at QB. Does it seem to ease pressure on a real talent like Barkley going into a predraft season? Or does it cause a guy like him more pressure, thinking if he doesnt do great some combine wonder kid is going to get taken before him?
I think Barkley is past any worries like that. His game is so ready made for the NFL that the draft part will take care of itself.
Toughest road game in 2012?
I'm going to say Washington. It will be the fourth road game in five games, it will be in a strange building (Husky Stadium is under repair so it will be at Seahawks home), they will want revenge for the SC victory last year and they have a quarterback who is more than capable of getting hot.
Can you give us a prediction of who you think USC gets as cornerbacks and safeties? It's early I just wanted to know. Thanks
Hello Mr. Fan. I think it will be Hawkins and Johnny Johnson at corner, Su'a Cravens and Tahaan Goodman at safety. You can easily end up subbing others such as Redfield or Willis, I'm just giving one guess as we sit here in May.
Is SC too stacked at QB, with Wittek and Kessler the lead for 2013 and Max Browne coming in next year and David Sills the year after that?
I don't think so. Sills is coming in class of 2015 while Browne is 2013. Depending on potential departures of other quarterbacks between now and then it wouldn't surprise me to see a class of 2014 QB as well. You always want to have 4 QB's on the roster.
Good afternoon Gary,June 6, big day for USC is Cravins picking the trojans what are u hearing or thoughts.
Eddie - everything I'm hearing is still positive in the direction of the Trojans.
What are you thought on the chances of USC landing Ty Isaac.
I honestly don't have a clear sense which way he is leaning. I don't think he has a clear direction either, that's why he hasn't made an announcement yet. I guess that means the chances are pretty close to 50-50 right now.
Hi Garry, Is there players that you'd like to see get an offer from USC that hasn't received one yet? If so, who would you like to receive those offers.thanks
Vanderdoes would have been at the top of that list until the recent offer. Now I would put WR Steven Mitchell from Alemany up there, along with DB Tyler Foreman from Crespi. I also like OL Kenny Lacy from Arizona.
Are the coaches really interested in T. Goodman, and if so does he project at DB or WR? I think there are enough DBs in this upcoming class, wouldn't you think?
There is definitely interest in Goodman and it's on the defensive side of the ball as a safety. There are certainly enough DB's in this class that it's not a huge loss if he goes elsewhere but the fact that he has such an early offers shows that he's a guy the coaches would love to have.
Do you see SC bringing in another QB or do they wait to get one next year and Sills 2015?
I don't see another QB in this class but, as mentioned earlier in the chat, I do think it's possible to see one in 2014. A lot of that will depend on if Kessler, Wittek and Scroggins are all still on the roster at that point. If one of them should depart this year, that could change the thinking on another 2013 guy.
Hey Gary, If Justin Davis commits to USC do you think Ty Issac won't be interested in USC ?
Both players are well aware of USC's interest in the other guy and the coaches have preached that they want two tailbacks in this class. I don't think a verbal from Davis would negatively impact Isaac at all.
What position battle are you most looking forward to Garry once fall practices begins? My thoughts are the third wide receiver.
I'm going to go with nose tackle. I just think that is such a critical spot and it's not anywhere near settled. That 3rd WR spot is going to be a great competition though, no doubt about it.
Does a conference championship this year silence the Kiffin naysayers? Or does he need to at least make it to the BCS title game?
I think a lot of those naysayers were silenced at the end of last year but, as you say, a conference title and/or BCS title game run would certainly help keep them quiet.
What is up with Khaliel Rogers not getting an offer. It's on tape that he a dominant lineman, and he is highly underrated. It's also no secret that he and Kenny bigelow have both been offered by Ohio St, and that there is an obviously strong connection between them, and Kenny already said that he would take a trip anywhere Khaliel wants to go. It's easy to see than Urben Myer is using this as a recruiting tool to steal Kenny Bigelow. What is Lane Kiffin's counter measure, and what is he waiting for. Khaliel would be a terrific center to, and we definitely need one now that Holmes is leaving this year.
First off, Cyrus Hobbi is the probable center of the future on the roster right now, or maybe even Abe Markowitz in 2013. I think Rodgers is right on the bubble for an offer, it's not like the coaches are ignoring him right now. They are being very honest and upfront. That group with Sills, Bigelow and Rodgers is very tight and they would obviously love to keep playing together but they appear to understand the reality of the current waiting situation.
Are Su'a Cravens and Joe Mathis really a package deal for the Trojans? I've heard rumblings lately that Mathiis is quite interested in going to school out of state?
I don't think they are a package deal but they are cousins so there is a natural family relationship. Joe has encouraged Su'a to take these out of state trips and Su'a is doing it. Does that automatically mean Mathis is headed out of state? Not necessarily. He's a young man who is experiencing the recruiting process for the first time and is enjoying it very much so far.
Hey Gary!! Lane Kiffin is a great coach and is turning this program around fast If Pat Haden was AD when Pete Carrol departed do you think LK would of been an option??????
Good question. No, I do not think Lane would have been hired in that scenario. I think he would be hired by Haden now, I just don't think it would have happened then.
Will USC venture down south and pluck another Leonard Williams, or Nelson Aghalor away from the SEC and southern schools? What players would you say are on Kiffin's radar?
They are certainly trying with guys like Carl Lawson, Montravious Adams and Vernon Hargreaves.
When do you think Oregon is going to receive info and possible sanction on the willie lyles case and any indication on what the penalties might be?
I talked to one person in the northwest last week who seemed to think things were getting close, as far as an announcement of penalties. I do think Oregon will get hit pretty hard but I don't think it will be at SC level (even though I think what they did involved gaining a clear competitive advantage).
Name 1 break-out player on offense and defense that no one is talking about right now.
Anthony Sarao on defense, he's legit. Nobody is really mentioning Josh Shaw either since he didn't play in spring but he will be a factor too. On offense, I will say Soma Vainuku is more of a factor than people think.
At this point in time, who is the better coach: Kiff or Sark?
The momentum is certainly on Kiffin's side from the play of the Trojans over the last half of the season and heading into next year. Sark hasn't had the Huskies at that level yet, even though he has done some really good things. I think he pulled off a couple huge coaching coups this year with Wilcox and Lupoi.
What do you think about the Utah game? That game gives me nightmares. They will have a better offense with their QB back from injury, plus a solid defense. Plus we have to travel there.
No doubt, a new venue and a solid opponent. I've always like Jordan Wynn's game too.
With all the attention being given to Georgia and Floria this year. What is your gut prediction on the number of gets for SC there this year?
I'll say one. I don't get any real sense of a player from that area who is genuinely leaning this way but these coaches have a knack for pulling someone each year.
Any idea when Hutchings will announce? And is he an SC lock?
Nothing firm but it is expected to be over the summer before the season starts. It sure seems like everything points the SC way right now.
Is Jim Mora creating any competition for the Trojans regarding recruiting?
Not yet but he's doing a real good job of going after the type of local players he should go after. SC can only get so many and there is still plenty of talent for UCLA to build a program if they can keep those players away from Washington, ASU, etc.
Could Barkley,Holmes,Woods, and Mcdonald be 1st round picks in 2013
When Tre Madden comes back in 2013, if Justin Davis and Ty Isaac are incoming RBs, will Madden go back to LB?
Kiffin has already said Madden will stay at RB
Garry,Is Tee Shepard better than Willis, Johnson, Hargreaves, Hawkins? Would you take him over the others?
If Tee Shepard is cleared and wants to come I would take him, bird in hand. At the very least he's right in line with those guys.
Thanks everyone, that's all we have time for today. See you next week.
