Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings all. Welcome and thanks for coming.

Jason (Indianapolis)

How do you feel Angerer and Connor fit in the new Defensive scheme, both are tackling machines, not sure of the cover skills?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

I think Pat Angerer is a player. I'm not sure about Kavell Conner at all.

Coach K (Office in Reliant)

Paul, I know it is too soon to say this, but I think we really have a shot this year at the AFC title. Although our schedule looks fairly tough, I think we can win a good majority of our games. Do you think our team has what it takes to be the AFC Champs this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

I think you can challenge for it. Two concerns. Tough schedule. Potential defensive dropoff -- regression to the mean type of deal.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Looks like as reported by Tania Ganguli that there was more to the release of Drew Coleman than simply numbers. Drew Coleman was promised a chance to start and never got an opportunity. He challenged that decision, and might have been let go because of it. You don't release a good starting slot corner in May because you want him to get a jump on getting a job elsewhere. What do you thin k about this situation?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

I wrote I think it was foolish to release him at this point in the year. You take him to camp.

Eddie George (Acting Class)

Have I officially retired yet? If not, am I holding off so that people will have forgotten about me when I do become eligible for the HOF (cuz I AIN'T getting in...am I?)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

You don't have to have officially retired to be Hall of Fame eligible. And I've never heard him say he is Hall of Fame worthy. He's not.

Red Devil (DC)

Do the Wright/Blackmon/Fleener picks indicate a shift in philosophy away from defense for the AFC South teams? Any chance this has something to do with a certain QB moving on?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

Small sample size to declare any sea change. Whole league is about quarterbacks and giving them weapons. AFC South teams fell in line with that.

Matt (Nashville)

Shouldn't Douzable fit into the rotation at DE for the Titans this year as well as the other 4 you mentioned the other day?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Yes, a guy the pass-rush desperate Jaguars let walk is a guy the Titans should rely on. My error. #sarcasm

Shaun (TN)

I really think the Titans should sit Locker until Week 5. I can just see him begin fed to those Defensive Wolves and getting skiddish, much like a young Jax QB. I know he must take his lumps. But a smooth transition would be nice. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

How do you make a smooth transition at Week 5 if Hasselbeck's done OK?

Red Devil (DC)

Vlachos is a technically sound, albeit undersized center, who signed with a team coached by two HOF linemen... what are the chances that he makes the roster, and that he contributes in some capacity?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

I'd say good except one of the guys he's competing for a roster spot against is Kevin Matthews, who happens to be one of those HoF lineman's son. Practice squad, minimally.

Matt (New Jersey)

Who do you project to be the Texans third receiver? Posey, Jean or Martin?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Posey. It's amazing how good Jean's gotten in fans' eyes in the last couple weeks.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

What are your expectations for Blaine Gabbert this season? Do you think he will make strides in the right direction with the addition of Justin Blackmon and a full training camp under his belt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

I think he can improve to average, and that would be a big jump.

Shaun (TN)

How do you propose to "fix" the D-line of the Titans? I like you am not sure the current roster will produce enough sacks/pressure to help out the secondary like it needs to. Is Umenyora still in play? Any other FAs or undrafteds that look good?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

You're not finding fixes at this stage outside of a trade, and I don't think there will be much of that going on. They have what they'll have, barring a surprising cut somewhere in camp.

Blueman (Indy)

Do you think ever player that was drafted in the 3rd rd or latter and ends up starting or being a contributor will have Jax fans saying "Yea we coulda had him but Gene got his punter"

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

Yes. And not every one would fit Jacksonville. But some of them would have.

Tony (Michigan)

Will Andrew Luck have a better rookie season then Cam Newton did last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

No. Newton's numbers were pretty ridiculous.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Looks like Mike Brewster might be in line to take over the C spot after Meester retires. It's a little concerning to me that a UDFA might be expected to start in the next couple years. Aren't most C's drafted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Why is it confusing? Undrafted free agents make teams regularly, and guys who make teams sometimes become starters. They like Estes. Now Brewster can compete with him to take over for Meester. Several centers who media projected as draft picks weren't selected. So media overrated how teams rated them. Jeff Saturday wasn't drafted, was he?

Joseph (Louisville)

How many linebackers do the Titans plan on carrying this year? I'm seeing at least 7, if not 8.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

Akeem Ayers, Colin McCarthly, Zach Brown, Tim Shaw, Patrick Bailey are definites. Will Witherspoon probable, but hardly definite. Gerald McRath probably needs a good camp. Can't see where you're finding an eighth?

Eric Z. (Melbourne, FL)

Why has Bud Adams never been elected to the HOF? Nearly every owner that helped the original AFL get off its feet is in. Lamar Hunt is in, and has the AFC trophy named after him. Everything I have read shows that Adams had as much to do or more in making the AFL into a power and shaping the NFL into what it is today.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Done nothing of note since. He was huge in the AFL. But I need a bit more. I don't think he's a Hall of Famer.

TO (looking for work)

Paul, now that I'm maturing could I be a good mentor to the WRs in Tennessee?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I've said it 1,000 times. You sign guys to play, not to mentor. And since when have you been a mentor? A cancer, not a mentor.

Devin (Glenn Dale, MD)

Greg Jones is one of the most underrated players in the league no doubt, but will disposable in Mularkey's new offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

It's hard to be underrated as a fullback. The difference between a very good fullback and an average fullback isn't that much, and it's a situational position that plays about a third of the time. I'd rather have a great guy than not, but it's not like having a great player at a position that plays every down. I don't know Mularkey's plan for fullback.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

If Gabbert can become an avg QB this year can the Jags challenge the Texans for the Division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Not inconceivable.

Rusty Smith (driving Jake and Matt to Starbucks)

is there still a need for a 3rd QB? What is my contract worth? Why are the Titans still keeping me? Should I be cut?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

Why wouldn't they be keeping you? You cost them zero salary-wise until the season starts. They need you for camp and preseason games. If they still like you after that, you're a cheap third. If not you can be cut then.

Alan (Dallas, TX)

Please do not allow the location decieve you... by no means am I a cowboys' fan. Do you believe, on a neutral field, that the Texans could stand toe to toe with the Patriots? There are critics who discredit last year's success due to the teams Houston played and believe this year's schedule is set to reveal the true Texans.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

They could stand toe to toe, sure. They wouldn't be favored. They wouldn't be my pick to win it, I don't think.

Zoo (Indy)

Would Cedric Benson be a good 1 yr signing for the Colts? A Strong running vet would seem to fit a need & the direction of the new offense. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

I suspect they will look at the three they have in Donald Brown, Delone Carter and Vick Ballard. If late in camp they think they don't cut it, they can find a veteran then.

Bryan (Nashville)

The other day, Colin Cowherd said he thinks the Jags will finnish 3-13. With better coaching, receivers, and an off season for Gabbert to learn, shouldn't they have a better record than they had last season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

They should. It's very popular to pick them to be bad. It's not a view from close range, I don't think. I think they can be decent or even good.

Tony (Michigan)

Can Chris Johnson get back into his "CJ2K" form from a couple of years ago

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Not 2,000 yards, no. Can he be an effective back again? Absolutely.

Red Devil (DC)

I know Titans fans were pretty upset a few years ago when Fisher cut LeGarrette Blount to keep a pair of special teams LBs... looking at his one-dimensional-ness, and the fact that the Bucs drafted a RB... was Fisher right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

No, he said it was the wrong move in hindsight. They knew Blount was going to be an NFL-caliber back. They just didn't have room for him then. It wasn't an unreasonable move right then.

JAY (Texas)

Why do people still think the Texans will have a drop off when Williams didnt play for most of the season and Ryans didnt fit in the 3-4 ??? ...and if its a leadership thing Bradie James was a big leader when he played in Dallas for Wade ...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

So Bradie James is automatically a leader in a new room where he isn't even a lock to make the team? A good unit in year A does not always stay a good unit in year B. Do they have the personnel to be very good again? Sure. I worry about Kareem Jackson without Jason Allen.

DK (Working Hard)

Which Titans WR has the best stat line this year?Britt, Washington, or Wright?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

Britt.

Joseph (Louisville)

When will the league add more players on gameday? I heard it talked about recently. Have they already done so? 45 on gameday is ridiculous.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

Why is it ridiculous? Bill Belichick is dead on with this issue. You raise it much, you allow for too many specialists and don't require teams to find enough football players. Do you really want to see more players who can only do one thing? Let's have a kickoff kicker, a long field goal kicker and short field goal kicker.

Shaggy (Houston)

Your take on Case Keenum? They say size and strength get you drafted (ala combine numbers), and timing and accuracy gets you playing time. He's probably going to be 3rd stringer at best and practice squd at worst. Any NFL potential you see there for the future?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I really don't have a feel for him and am not super into Keenum vs. Beck until I see them on the field.

Jason (murfreesboro tn)

Someone on NFL network said this morning that he thought the Jags, not the Titans had the best chance to upset the Texans and win the division. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I think the Jaguars could be as good as the Titans.

Jacob (Houston)

I saw on an earlier post that you said there could be a potential defensive drop off in Houston...with that said, where do you think the weakness lies going into the season? The loss of D Ryans isn't that significant from a production standpoint on the field and losing M Williams to free agency doesn't scare me either. Should I be worried?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

You should worry about Kareem Jackson.

Hank (Arlene)

Brady,Rothlisberger,ManningI and II Brees Warner. It takes top level QB to win SB.I just don't see Matt Shaub filling the bill.As good as the Texans are Shaub just doesn't seem like an IT kinda QB.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

And so they should do what?

Jordan (Clarksville,TN)

how big of an impact will Wright have in the Titans offense this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

I would think he should be in the top five in receptions.

Greg (1 EverBank Field Drive)

I'm not sure I understand the signing of Jordan Palmer and the release of Dan LeFevour. With uncertainty at the QB position, do we really need two veterans? Why let go of a very talented prospect that could benefit from being developed in favor of a veteran with no resume?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

How is LeFevour a talented prospect? Hasn't he been cut by a couple teams? I trust Jacksonville's brain trust to judge who's best for them at No. 3. And No. 3 needs to do more in practice than anything. The Jags are developing Gabbert. They don't need to be developing anyone else right now, I don't think.

eli (my cube)

PK, do you ever play video games? if so, what type of games are you into? Do you play Madden at all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

May come as a surprise, but I am older then 15.

ttuman (Atlanta)

Why do you think the Titans let Finnigen go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

They don't think he is worth anything close to what he's getting paid.

Joseph (Louisville)

It doesn't have to be a YUGE raise in numbers Kuharsky. Adding 5 or 6 would allow for some helpful depth. Why not just let it be 53? Healthy scratches is a waste. Let them Play!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

That is huge. There is nothing wrong with it as is. I love how problems that don't exist need correcting. You have to healthy scratch to match up with my injury scratches to make things more fair. It works.

James (Charlotte, NC)

Thoughts on Eben Britton and the impact that he will have next year--does he take over for Whimper or do they keep trying to play him at RG? Who would you have as the starting 5 on the line next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

If Whimper starts, I retract all my Jaguars' optimism.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Rodgers completed 68 percent of his passes last season. I don't know if Locker's ever coming close to that number.

JR (cubical-deep)

Any chance that the Titans give Kevin Matthews a legitimate shot at the starting C job? He seems to play well in preseason games, but yeah I know - it's only preseason.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Everyone has a legitimate shot at the starting center job.

Red Devil (DC)

I remember a few years ago when teams would practice against each other for a week or so during summer camps... is that still going on, or has it faded away for some reason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

Still happens. But fading. Because with two-a-days disappearing, it's not necessarily worth it.

mike (tn)

teh afc south has the best kickers, mlb. and rbs whos says this is the weakest division lol???

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

Who cares about those positions if you have mediocre quarterbacks?

Miles (Austin, TX)

You've been telling Texans fans for two years to give Kareem Jackson time, he's still young, he'll develop, he needs to adjust, etc. Time to panic all of a sudden?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

They lost their safety blanket when Jason Allen left. Two years in, Jackson should be better. Not saying time to panic, saying he's the defensive concern.

lokey (tn)

ok ive had this argument with texans fans that say matt schaub is a top 10 qb i think that when hes healthy hes top 15 maybe, i know its ticky tacky putting numbers on players but there no way hes top 10!what do you think paul?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

I just counted today, for a piece that will show up shortly. I have him 13th or 14th.

Awayne (Indy)

How are you dealing with the thought of Mariano Rivera possiblly being done as a Yankee.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

He's not done.

Nathan (Murfreesboro)

I don't think Locker needs to complete 68% of his passes. If he can just get to 58-60% with his propensity for completing the big plays and scrambling I think he'd be successful.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

Let's not mention him with Aaron Rodgers then.

LuvYaBlue77 (Camden, DE)

Is there any possibility that the Titans swing the TE from SMU to DE from time to time?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

I don't really see the rationale for playing him two ways.

Bobby (Houston)

Will Blaine Gabbert finally manage to complete more than 34% of his passes over 10 yards this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

Finally? After that whole one year of failing to do so?

LuvYaBlue77 (Camden, DE)

So who's gonna be the nickel and dime DBs for the Tiatns this year. Does Mouton have a realistic shot at either?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

He does. Nickel could be Coty Sensabaugh or Mouton. Or they could shift Verner inside and use Tommie Campbell or Chris Hawkins outside.

Drew (TO's drive way)

Your response to TO was hurtful. He was well behaved with the Bills and Bengals. Mark my words, he will help a team this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

More likely he's not in the league.

Brent (Chicago)

People don't seem to remember that the Colts were in MOST of the games last season. Chances that with the influx of talent they are WAY better than people are giving credit for?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

Influx of talent? Have you looked at the defense? They have two legitimate, proven players in the entire secondary -- Antoine Bethea and Jerraud Powers.

Dreamer (Nashville)

Can you walk us through how somone like us, or you, goes from football fan to getting paid for it? What steps does it take?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

People are bored by that. Send a note to the mailbag and I will respond via email.

Colton (Jacksonville, FL)

Do the Texans have the best group of receivers in the division? If so which team is 2nd, The Jags or Titans with their additions or the colts with their new tight ends and Luck throwing to them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

How could we rank the Texans first when their second guy is limited and the candidates to be third are rookies or have no experience? I'd rank the Titans first. Need to see more to judge the rest.

Joe (Houston)

T.J. Yates is a great insurance policy for the Texans - do you think he's got what it takes to develop into the future franchise QB? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

Maybe in time. Not for 2013.

Jason (Los Angeles)

Do you see either the Texans or Titans regressing this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Both. At least a little.

Wayne (Tempe, AZ)

Brees, Manning I and II, Brady, Rogers, Great year but too early to tell on Newton, Rivers maybe, Cutler maybe, Stafford, You probably count Roethlisberger for his SBs which I suppose is fair, Definitely Not Flacco or Matt Ryan. Romo is good but chokes in crunch time more than anyone. I think Schaub should be in the top 10. He's a better passer than Big Ben just hasn't won as much. I'll be interested to see this article and your reasoning.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

There is no case in the world to be made that Matt Schaub is a better NFL quarterback than Ben Roethlisberger.

Matt (Denver)

Who is going to win the Stanley Cup?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

Devils.

LuvYaBlue77 (Camden, DE)

Are you satisfied with the Titans RB situation?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

For 2012, yes.

Brent (Chicago)

"Influx of talent? Have you looked at the defense? They have two legitimate, proven players in the entire secondary -- Antoine Bethea and Jerraud Powers." The Texans didn't even have 2 before last offseason.Just tell me there's a chance Paul.........

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

And then the Texans had an influx of talent. The Colts didn't.

Steve (Longview, TX)

Are we really supposed to believe the retired players when they say they didn't know what the side effects of playing football would be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Whether they knew or not, if trainers were sending them back on the field, the league has some responsibility for the after effects.

Red Grange (Heaven)

Canton Bulldogs or the Oorang Indians? Which should the NFL bring back?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I'm partial to the Pottsville Maroons.

Rob (Pittsburgh)

In your opinion, should a 1st round rookie generally be the immediate starter? Or does it make more sense to sit and get used to the new defenses?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

Depends on what you have at the position. But I like my first round pick to be an immediate contributor and starter, yes.

Dee Bagg (Jax, Fl)

Do you think MJD will be a huge part of the Jags Offense or will they look to Jennings to take some of the load away?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:00 PM)

Jennings will get carries. They may try to measure MJD's carries, but not for any reason but to maximize his chances to be the same guy in December he is in September.

Bobby (Houston)

"There is no case in the world to be made that Matt Schaub is a better NFL quarterback than Ben Roethlisberger."Let's give it a shot. Schaub throws for more yards, more accurately, and throws fewer interceptions. Give Schaub the defenses that Ben enjoyed his entire career and he has rings on his fingers too.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

He doesn't have that defense. Ben doesn't have Andre Johnson or Arian Foster. Ben is incredibly tough, hard to get down. Schaub is not.

Simon (At the mall)

I need your help with my Mother's Day gift!

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

I'll take care of it.

Kevin (Knoxville)

Angerer and Conner at ILB in a 3-4: Not so scary. Freeney and Mathis at OLB in a 3-4 and no proven depth: Scary. The Colts need CB's, but don't they also need serious help at LB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:05 PM)

They need virtually everything on defense. Corner more than anything. Freeney and Mathis are good football players. I have far less of a concern about them than about empty slots on the depth chart.

Andy Luck (Colts Central)

Thanks to all, it has been a great chat. I look forward to your support.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:07 PM)

Thanks Andrew.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:08 PM)

Buh bye.
