Chat with Ian Begley

ESPN New York
  (12:01 PM)

Ian was at Knicks shoot-around in Miami and is heading back to the hotel. He'll be with us shortly. Sorry for the delay!

Ian Begley
  (12:09 PM)

Hey all, Apologies for being a few minutes late. Busy morning at Knicks shoot around. But, now, I', here for you guys .... Fire away!

Deven (Buffalo, NY)

Hi Ian. Will Mike Woodson receive an extension this off-season?

Ian Begley
  (12:10 PM)

Yes, I think so. He is the odds on favorite to get the job and should get an extension shortly after the season

Sam (New York, NY)

What are the keys to the game tonight in order for the Knicks to force a Game 6?

Ian Begley
  (12:13 PM)

Limit the Heat's secondary scorer .... And Carmelo goes off for 35-plus, shooting near 50 percent from the floor

Kris Missouri [via mobile]

Knicks are trying, but will they contend with Bulls & Heat in next 4 years? Break my heart if you have to.

Ian Begley
  (12:15 PM)

Kris, the last thing I want to do is break your heart, so I'll hedge a bit here. I think it depends greatly what they do at point guard. If they retain Lin, can he avoid the ups and downs associated with a deviling player. Can the next coach -- Mike Woodson or someone else -- figure out how to get Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire to play together? To me, those are the two biggest developmental issues surrounding this team

Alex (Anaheim)

Is Woodson going to be the guy next year, or can you see someone like Phil Jackson taking over?

Ian Begley
  (12:17 PM)

What's up Alex, I think if Phil Jackson shows interest, the Knicks will hire him. But everything I've heard on this says Phil isn't interested. If that's true, then the Knicks should do the right thing and lock up Woodson

Jim (Utica, NY)

Steve Novak has had an awfully hard time getting his shot off in this series. Are there any adjustments that can be made to get him more looks?

Ian Begley
  (12:19 PM)

Hey Jim, I think there are adjustments Steve can make, though I'm not sure they can be done in this series .... since the Heat are face guarding him with success, he can expect to see the same defense implemented against him (by most teams) next season. To counter that, Novak would be wise to work on shooting off of a screen and shooting off of the dribble JJ Reddick provided a great example of this in Orlando the other day when he took a dribble, let a defender fly by him, and knocked down an open three

Jeremy Lin (NYC)

How much money do you think the Knicks will offer me to stay in the orange and blue? Would I also have my boy Fields with me next year?

Ian Begley
  (12:21 PM)

ha, hey what's up fake Jeremy. I think the Knicks will dip into their MLE and make Lin the best offer possible this summer -- which, at its highest, is 5 million. I have a gut feeling the Knicks let Landry walk this year, just a hunch though

Eric (New York)

If the Knicks somehow pull out a win in Miami, MSG will be so crazy Game 6 that the Knicks might be able to pull out another. Then the choke-worthy Heat could check out of Game 7! Is anyone talking about this possibility?

Ian Begley
  (12:22 PM)

Die hard Knicks fans are dreaming of it, Eric

jon (nyc)

Which Knicks do you believe will be re-signed next year? And who are some realistic target roster acquisitions?

Ian Begley
  (12:25 PM)

Hey Jon, I think they bring back Lin for sure and try to bring back Novak using an exception. I think J.R. is gone and they may let Fields walk. Unsure about JJ given his knee injury. As far as targets go, it looks like the Knicks won't have much cap space so they won't have much opportunity to make a splash on the open market, unless they make a major move between now and then

Greg (Miami)

What will be the higher number after tonight's game? How many the Knicks lose by, or Melo's shot attempts?

Ian Begley
  (12:25 PM)

hahaha. Greg, a confident Heat fan, chiming in ...

Tony (Michigan)

How would the city of New York react in the Knicks came back and beat the Heat in 7?

Ian Begley
  (12:26 PM)

Remember what Boston was like after the Red Sox came back in 2004? It should be along those lines

Jim (Utica, NY)

I think Game 4 provided some hope that the Melo and Amar'e duo can be succesful. What are your thoughts Ian?

Ian Begley
  (12:28 PM)

I think your right Jim. Game 4 showed both superstars at their best. It works if Amare is actively cutting in the half court and Carmelo is an active passer ... those two events haven't happened at the same time very often .... If Im a Knick fan, though, I'm optimistic that a full year under Woodson and an assistant coach focused on offense will help the two players come together

Max (Long Island)

What is the missing piece for the Knicks? Why haven't they had the #3 seed or at least higher than 7?

Ian Begley
  (12:30 PM)

Hey Max, the Knicks aren't happy that they ended up in the seventh seed. Two or three guys have mentioned in the past few days that if they'd 'taken care of business' earlier this season, they wouldn't be in the predicament they find themselves in currently .... that means they shouldnt have lost games to teams like Charlotte, New Orleans and Cleveland this year

Steven (Long island)

will the knicks trade amare

Ian Begley
  (12:36 PM)

I don't think so Steve. There a few major barriers here -- the length and amount of $ left on Stoudemire's deal, the fact that his contract is uninsured because of past knee surgeries, and the fact that his production seems to be on the decline. I think for the reasons stated above, it will be tough to find a proper suitor for Stoudemire

Anthony (Orlando, FL)

Hey Ian,Odds are definitely against us, but if the Knicks can steal game 5 in Miami, don't you think there is a legit possibility of a potential game 7? I think Toney Douglas is the X factor. Hopefully he'll take advantage of his new found playing time. We need the old Toney D to show up; the one who can hit a 3 point shot.

Ian Begley
  (12:41 PM)

Hey Anthony, you're right, they sure could use that old Toney back, but I haven't seen any signs so far that he has the same shot this season. who knows? maybe he will shock everyone with a big game

Deven (Buffalo, NY)

Where will Jeremy Lin end up next year?

Ian Begley
  (12:45 PM)

Hey Deven, I think he stays in NY. For several reasons: They think he can develop into a solid playmaker for years to come and he's a huge marketing asset for the Knicks and has been a financial boon for the team this season....

Ian Begley
  (12:45 PM)

Guys, I have a few stories to write, so I have to run. It was great chatting with you. You're all very knowledgable and passionate and I appreciate that. Hope we can do it again soon!
