Happy Friday my friends...Thanks for coming to my afternoon chat. Switched it up on you today! Everyone ready for the weekend?
With Lance Berkman coming back from the dl soon, how is this going to impact another Cardinal that just came of the dl himself, one Allen Craig. Thanks and you are not a cone.
Joe: First, I thank you for recognizing what I know to be true...It will be interesting to see what they do. Sorry - a technical snag interrupted my typing. Berkman has indicated he's willing to come off the bench - and it might not be a bad idea to ease him in. Hard to believe they sit Craig when he's been playing so well. At least for the early phase, we'll have to check lineups and reports closely as it could change daily.
Whats up with Chris Sale? How long does it take to get MRI results?
Dustin: hahaha...not this long. But there are probably a number of conversations going on before anything is publicly announced so as to present a plan for the situation going forward. The team has to address not only whatever the health issue may or may not be with Sale's elbow, but also his role (starter vs reliever) and how they maneuver the rosters around depending on whether he's going on the DL (and for how long).
Hi Stephania! Love your work. Have you seen any signs of lingering health issues with Josh Johnson? He has not been himself.
Mike: I don't think it's something lurking beneath the surface. I think (and I am drawing some of my own conclusions here based on what he's told me, what I've seen and his entire history) that he is still figuring it out after so long away - and - trying to play through injury last year. I look at it a bit like Tommy John and a guy rediscovering his arm after so long away from the game. I'm still hopeful.
Figuring out Brett Gardner's injury is like solving a riddle. Any news? Did he suffer a setback?
There is some news. Another MRI indicates he did aggravate the forearm strain.which originally placed him on the DL in the first place. A very unusual injury to begin with and then the only way to really put it to the test is to return to play. That's what he did but after his last rehab outing he had swelling, so here we are.
Hey Stephania! What do you make of Tim Stauffer coming off the DL? Think he going to be worth pulling into my bench? Bard has been pretty bad thus far after all. Thanks!
Matt: I would go ahead with Stauffer. His last outing was strong - seven scoreless innings. He has had back-to-back outings with no subsequent symptoms so I'm feeling encouraged about him.
Any new news with Luebke? Safe to drop in a 10 team mixed?
Jason: If it were me, I'd drop him. Here's why. Initial MRI supposedly saw damage of ligament. Sounds like based on that and his discomfort the prospect of surgery was at least discussed. But swelling in the elbow led someone to believe the read of the MRI wasn't ideal (swelling often interferes with a clear image), so the thought was to wait until swelling went down to further evaluate. BUT - when he went out and tried to throw last after taking some days off, he couldn't throw normally (weak more than pain). Even if he opts for rehab, I see a lengthy shutdown in his future and he may yet be headed for surgery.
Chris Young playing in rehab games this weekend? Over/under next Friday for his MLB return?
Chris: Intrasquad games but I haven't heard definitively about rehab assignment. It could come soon - usually guys coming back from long absence are targeted for series. Don't know their schedule but could see him returning on a Friday or a Monday depending when rehab starts - AND no problems.
Any Progress with Ryan Howard? do we see him early June? has he been making progress?
Jeff: Hitting a bit now. I still think it will take some time to get his strength back after being immobilized longer with the wound. I don't see him before mid-June - but consider it a bit of a guess b/c every day they're evaluating him to see if he can up the activity any more.
Did you know that your's is the most important of all the chats? Thanks! Any update on Erik Bedard? He's gonna be a two-starter next week, but not sure if he'll be playing!
Chris: I did not know that...but thanks! The word is that he said he was feeling better Thursday but no one is committing to even his next start just yet. And if you know Bedard, you know why...
Is Werth even worth a DL spot? Is this one of those injuries that even when he's back it's going to take a while to get back on track?
Jeremy: This is one of those where it's so need-dependent based on your league, rules, etc. Yes, I think it will take him a while to get back on track. Could be 3 mos. And he's had wrist problems before - not in same specific area, but still a worry.
Which 3B has a better chance of bouncing back this year, Panda or Longoria?
Jay: Panda's return far more predictable. And we saw him come back from this last year. Granted, never identical but he already knows what to expect in terms of how it feels, rehab, etc. Longoria - with a serious injury to his hamstring, has the potential for a rockier road back in my opinion.
Any updates on Morse and his projected June 1 return
Addy: Not from an activity standpoint. I think he is still hoping for that. But remember he was to be shut down for 6 weeks. We're only about a month in so he's not doing much. He's doing some conditioning and working the other side of his body but hard to project if he'll be ready to return at that point when no baseball activities yet.
Stephania: What is your injury history like?
Andrew: Too long for this chat...
I'm the owner of BOTH Pablo Sandoval & Jacoby Ellsbury. In your opinion, who do we see back on the field first, from their respective DL stint?
Ricky: This dovetails from the last Pablo question. Both could be coming back around the same time if all goes well, but Panda more predictable. One of the things we don't know about Ellsbury (who just started doing weight bearing exercises) is how he will be at the plate, how he will be fielding when he has to dive with that arm outstretched (a vulnerable position if he feels at all unstable). So I trust Pablo more and I think he may even end up back first.
Is there a reson to be concerned with Braun's nagging Achilles? Do you see a DL trip for him at some point this season or will occasional rest be enough to get past it?
Tony: THis is exactly the type of injury that worries me. More often we see guys who rupture their Achilles say that it began with a few episodes of soreness that lasted a couple of weeks. Not always, but it's not uncommon either. And in his case, he's going to try to play as much as possible...may be hard to get the complete rest that he needs. I would not at all be surprised if this turns into a DL stint.
What do you think the outlook is for Kevin youkilis? Is he worth holdin on to or should he be someone else's problem? There is always a chance for another DL stint this season.
Fred: Well, kind of the same as I said before the year started. The chronic injuries are starting to catch up with him. I wouldn't be surprised if the back acts up again later or if it's something else. It just happens to guys who play hard and who play for long enough. I'm not sure I give up on him yet b/c he's good when he's there -and it sounds as if he's not too far off from rejoining the team. But the next time...
Angel Pagan's hamstring going to be ok?
Benny: They're making it sound like it was no big deal ("tightness") but want to see him come back and run before I believe it.
Any updates on Jason Bay?
Curt: Bay reportedly still had pain with coughing and sneezing this week...and he had the flu. Bummer. With a fracture the pain sticks around a few weeks so I don't think we're seeing him anytime soon.
Sergio Santos - full go when he comes back or are we talking a lingering type of inflammation?
Whaler: He's got a ways to go. He is just getting to throwing program then we need to consider whether they have him do rehab start (feel like that would likely happen) - and any return afterward will be predicated on how he responds to throwing. They don't want to get him back in a role unless inflammation has resolved so expect a few weeks yet.
Should I be worried about Matt Joyce's ankle? It looked pretty bad when he rolled it, but he was able to pinch hit yesterday.
Matthew: It did look like he turned it pretty dramatically but apparently it didn't feel too bad for him. Sounds like he'll play this weekend. Of course, we have to hope he doesn't roll it again...
Will Crisp return on the 18th when he is eligible?
Arun: It does not look that way. Still no baseball activities. Prob a while longer.
Hey Stephania, Is Matt Kemp's Hammy OK? Do you think this has been lingering all year and it's why he hasn't done much stealing?
Spencer: I don't think it's been lingering all year. Really believe it just cropped up and I'm not overly concerned. He's probably eliminated a number of potential steals from hitting so many home runs...
Joe Mauer has struggled since taking a ball to the knee. Do you think that is a coincidence or nagging injury the Twins aren't talking about?
William: Alert the conspiracy theorists! And, I kid. Last year I wondered how much information was being withheld with Mauer's situation. This year I think it's coincidence. But...I could be wrong. Although the entire team has been struggling which doesn't help.
How is Utley looking?
Chris: Still not fielding. Behind the pace from last year. We are not going to know much of anything on him to project forward b/c they are literally taking his rehab progression one day at a time, essentially based on how he feels when he wakes up.
OK friends...Time for me to vacate the room. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Stay healthy!!! See you next week.
