Hi everyone, thanks for joining me again this week. We'll go for about an hour so start sending the questions in.
Also, it says Auto-update is on so if it's not working let me know and I'll tell someone.
Which ESPNU150 recruit do you think Michigan will get next?
It's tough to answer that right now, Su'a Cravens says he's going to visit Michigan the week before school lets out before his decision but it seems like USC is the team to beat right now, WR Laquon Treadwell is on the list, DB Kendall Fuller, WR Jordan Cunningham, his teammate DT Maquedius Bain is 35 overall, Ty Isaac is at 68, if Michigan misses on Isaac there's a chance they'll go after Derrick Green harder who is 83 overall. There are still a lot of options out there.
Can we expect to see Borges to throw multiple looks against Bama such as some stacked power I formations, the deuce, the diamond formation and some 4-5 wr formations. I think we would need to be creative and confuse Bama's defense in order to have a shot of winning that game.
As long as the offense can handle it, which they should, I don't see why not. Any advantage you can get on Alabama's defense will help. I don't know that they'd get too crazy though since it's the first game.
What are the chances we can lure Su'a Cravens away from the West coast? Is he the most important remaining prospect for us to pick up? Who is the one guy we would want to get above all else?
That's a good question. I said this a minute ago, but I believe USC is most likely the team to beat for him right now. However, for him to take an unofficial visit to Michigan before he decides says to me at least that he has some legitimate interest. His cousin, Joe Mathis, is part of why he's taking the visit, but we'll see what happens. I don't consider him to be the most important prospect, I think landing a top receiver like Laquon Treadwell is more important based on need right now.
How many questions do you think you'll get about Laquon Treadwell today? More or less than 50?
We still need receivers, what is the status of Treadwell -I thought he was close to making up his mind? How good is York -we really hadn't heard too much about him?
Treadwell told me that he is no longer planning on taking his four official visits and then deciding after the season. He said he wants to make a decision during the season, potentially early on. He is supposed to be visiting, potentially this weekend, so we'll see what happens. The Michigan commits are aware and are recruiting him. On York, I've seen him at camps throughout this year and every time I have said to myself that I don't know why he's not being recruited. He always has good days at the camps and performs well.
What are the odds On cravens and Ty Isaac
I truly believe, and I've been saying this for about two weeks now, that Ty Isaac is torn. He told me that if he knew where he wanted to go he would've ended it by now, and I believe that 100 percent. I think it ultimately comes down to USC and Michigan and they are so different, which I believe makes it more difficult for him. I'm in regular contact with Ty and his mom, and I think he is truly deciding right now.
who do you think the top name that still on the board that michigan has a really good shot at landing and how much of an effect does chris rock leaving have on this team and this recruiting class
I think Laquon Treadwell and Jordan Cunningham for me are the top guys. I think Michigan needs to land that marquee receiver it's been lacking and those two guys would be good options. Beyond that I think someone like Henry Poggi, Eddie Vanderdoes or Maquedius Bain would be big gets as well.
Will this chat be limited to subscribers?
It is limited to only people named Jeff that live in Ann Arbor. Congratulations, you made the cut.
What's your record prediction and who, if any, do you think we lose to?
I hate this question, but I'll answer it. I think it's a one or two loss season. I think they'll lose to Alabama, which I think is fine. In my opinion Michigan State is a must win game. You can't lose again to MSU, and lose at home, you just can't.
Who will be our go to receiver? Is Jerald Robinson in the conversation? What kind of speed does he have?
I have heard that Jerald Robinson has been performing well, but you have to look at Roy Roundtree as the leader. It's his time to step up and lead that corp so I think he'll have a really good season.
Michigan still the team to beat for DT Henry Poggi?
I don't know if Michigan was definitely the front runner, I think they were among the leaders and pushing for the top spot. He's going to continue to take visits and then should make a decision sometime soon. I believe he'll be going out to West Coast schools, but I think Michigan, Alabama and a few other schools will likely be his top group. I still think they have a good shot, but we'll see after all these visits.
if we miss on Treadwell are there any other blue chip receivers we have a solid chance with?
Yeah, a lot. I'll have an article outlining who they are tomorrow. But like I mentioned before, I think Jordan Cunningham is really good. He's been overlooked because he just recently got offered and because everyone is focused on Treadwell. Guys like Darrell Daniels and Demorea Stringfellow too.
Do you think the lack of a "burner" at receiver so far should be a concern or do you believe that the coaches are confident that they can coach up whoever comes aboard?
For some reason people don't realize that Jehu Chesson from the 2012 class is a track guy. He's faster than people think, and he should be able to stretch the field.
first timer...is anything happening here?
Nope. We were waiting for you to get here.
Tom, What are your thoughts about our current wide reciever commits? Do either of these guys look like they could wear jersey #1 in the future?
That's kind of a loaded question, and it's up to them really. I'll say this, I think the receivers they have are guys that the coaches really like. I do believe though that someone like Treadwell is needed.
Which true freshman do you think will have the biggest impact on the field this year, and which freshman do you think will be the biggest surprise to get a redshirt?
A lot of people are saying the obvious of Joe Bolden and maybe Jarrod Wilson, but I think Devin Funchess might have a shot to see some time early. If he can catch on and put on the right weight I think he could be a threat in the offense.
Does Michigan have a real shot at landing CB Kendall Fuller?
Had you asked me that question before he took his visit to Michigan I would have said no, but I believe they do now. Fuller said he's going to try to get back up to Michigan again sometime soon. He recently included the Wolverines in his top four, and while they still might be on the lower part of the top four I think they have a shot.
How is your baby?
Great, thank you.
It is common knowledge that long distance relationships generally don't last. How do you see Chris Rock's departure effecting his bromance with Jack Miller?
Jack loves Michigan, so they'll just have to make it work.
You've mentioned Vanderdoes above. Anything new on him causing you to mention him? I'd love to see him go blue but am skeptical he'd leave the left coast.
No, I think you're probably right. Michigan is still in the conversation but I think you're right that it will be tough to get him.
Lets play the odds and assume Cravens chooses USC. Have you been given any indication as to how that affects where Mathis ends up? While the scouting services rank Cravens higher, I think Mathis might be more important to the class in terms of positional need/value.
I think they will make decisions independent of the other. Mathis is working on his academics, so that could play into things, but I think they'll make their own decisions.
Tom, you sound a little crabby this afternoon. Need a cupcake?
I think I'm crabby because I have had too much cake lately. My birthday a few weeks ago, wife's birthday, mother's day, every day that ends in 'y', I've had too much.
Hey Tom, what are your thoughts on Shallman as an every down back?
I don't think he's being brought in as that type of player. He's been told he will be a running back, but more Mike Alstott than Fitz as far as every down.
Do you think Dantonio is in panic mode over Michigan's recent recruiting success and in state dominance
No, I think they had to have known this would happen to a certain extent. I'm not sure what they're doing with some of the local and Midwest guys though. There are a few guys that I feel like they should have offered but haven't. With Illinois' new coaching staff too they're going to have a lot of competition for the recruits they'll go after.
Do you see Jack Wangler getting any attention, either as a walk-on or a late fill?
Chantel will have a good article on him tomorrow.
do Michigan still Suck with a donut eater coach?
I don't understand the question and why did you capitalize the S and not the D in the beginning of the sentence?
Who do you think is the first to verbal to Michigan for the 2014 class, and when might this happen?
That's a good question, the answer is going to depend on when some offers start to go out to the local kids. The 2014 Cass Tech kids all really like Michigan, so an offer to them could accelerate things. Malik McDowell has been told to wait to make any type of decision, so I think he'll wait a bit. You'll have a better idea after summer camp and more offers go out.
With his height and overall athletic ability do you feel Gardner could be a wr threat for us or at least a decoy..? Similar to nichol at state was
I guess. It's a different situation though, because Gardner is really still your backup. If he were to take snaps at receiver in a game, from what I understand, it's not a permanent thing.
I know this is tough, but are any of the committments not as strong as others? 18 seems to be a lot. I always worry that guys are just holding a spot in a class with a verbal
That's a fair question, and it's odd with this class everyone seems to love Michigan and gets along really well with the other classmates. There was some panic among the fans because David Dawson was hearing from Florida, but I don't think there's concern right now. All of these guys are pretty solid.
Speaking of Jack Miller, are things moving at all with his brother?
You guys have good questions this week, I like it. You're talking about 2013 DE Matt Miller, Jack's brother. I talk to Matt quite a bit and Matt thinks that things are progressing with Michigan. He plans on camping and could have a better idea of where he stands after that. He is in contact with the coaches quite a bit.
If there is an open scholly near signing day and all the needs have been filled, could you see UM picking up another QB?
Not with a scholarship, no.
Doesn't Ty Isaac seem like this year's Jordan Diamond?
No, not at all. Completely different.
Tom, our archenemy Ohio, I know they're looking at Jaylon Smith but who else might they pull that could big tough for us in the future (like Spence last year)?
They already have Cam Burrows and Eli Woodard committed, and I saw Burrows in person at the NFTC camp. He was bigger than I expected and I think both those guys are going to be really good for the Buckeyes.
Did C'sonte York have an msu offer? ESPN doesnt have one listed. Any chance he would change his decision if they did offer since hes a state fan?
York didn't have an MSU offer. He did grow up a Michigan State fan, but when I asked him why he committed to Michigan he said that it was just too good to pass up. He said he had to look out for his education from the academics side, and he really felt like the coaches were genuine. I don't think an MSU offer would change that for him.
Which recruit left on the board for 2013 would be the biggest gamebreaker for Michigan?
Probably Su'a Cravens. He is so versatile and could really help out in a lot of ways. Another guy that I like is safety Leon McQuay. Wherever he goes he's going to be very good.
What are the keys to ending the four game slide against Little Brother THIS year?
Minimize mistakes, especially on offense. Denard and the offensive line need to play well.
how did we beat Notre Dame 3 years in a row??? I think we were the underdog each time!
Michigan had more points at the end. Boom #TomVH'd
Who is the most important recruit for the 2014 class?
It's a little early to be able to tell that, depending on attrition and any other unforeseen things happening. OL will again be a need, tight end, DB's and defensive line for sure. They have offered some really good defensive line prospects with Malik McDowell and DaShawn Hand.
Do you feel Pipkins will see a good amount of time as a freshman?
I think so, as long as he comes in with the right weight and strength.
so who is this Shane Morris kid I keep hearing about? is he really any good?
He plays safety, runs a 4.7 40, don't worry about it, go back to sleep.
Is it weird that I feel like the MSU game is the most important game on our schedule this year? Never would have thought that 5 years ago..
Given the circumstances I don't think it's weird. It's a strange season because of the past few years and what transpired last season. I think there a lot of expectations right now.
so you dont think with as much as bama lost last year and the lack of experience in there defense that we can beat them. I know bama reloads well but kirby smarts system is a tough system bama is always a better team by the end of the season, i think playing the first game of the season benefits us more bringing back way more starters. Also they have big ? marks in their receiving corps and rb depth. I think our biggest strongpoint barring no injuries is our offensive line and secondary i believe we can move the ball on them and also shut down their receivers. Thoughts?
Stop bullying me into answer your questions, Kirt!!! But seriously, they are very well coached and they reload every year. That is going to be a really tough game. I don't think it's impossible, but it's going to be really tough.
How do you like our chances with Alex Kozan?
For old times sake.
You've talked with most if not all of the current 2013 class. Ignoring Shane Morris, which players seem most likely to be a future leader of the team (on or off the field)?
It's funny because they all seem to encourage each other and they're all competitors. At the camps and in the games I've seen them at there is a lot of communication. When David Dawson stoned Billy Price, Logan Tuley-Tillman was the first person to scream back at Dawson for his accomplishment.
Tom has got to be trollin us every week with the auto-update status. it's never worked.
muahahaha....no, really though I have it on. I'll tell our tech guys.
What are your thoughts on Pagano?
He has been blowing up lately. He texts me multiple times a day with his new offers, it's ridiculous. I told him I'm just going to put "All of them" on his offer list. He told me that he is going to visit some West Coast schools this summer, take officials to LSU, Nebraska and Baylor. One of the officials will be between Notre Dame and Michigan. I really like him though, really good prospect.
if michigan gets a couple more espn150 players and some solid players to round it out do you think thatd be enough to hold down the top recruiting class this year bama had the top class last year with 13
That will depend on where some of the five-star guys commit to and how many five-stars end up in the final rankings. Another update to the rankings will be out in June, but yeah I don't think that's unrealistic to think if they can land a few more 150 guys they could have a chance at the top class. It should be top three for sure.
You've mentioned Jordan Cunningham a few times. I hadn't heard much about him with regards to us being a leader. Is there something that you know about him that makes you optimistic about our chances?
I don't think Michigan leads. I said I think they have a chance to get in the conversation with his leaders. His principal went to Michigan, so that helps, he likes academics and comes from a good high school so that helps, and like I said they offered his teammate. I'd like to see him visit first, but I think they have a chance to get in the conversation.
Tom, it has been two weeks since you admitted you haven't tried Blimpies, have you cracked your cherry?
I haven't had time to be honest. I will get there soon, though. A good burger sounds good right now.
Hey Tom, when you talk to these recruits do they mention any of our current players as being expert recruiters on their visits like we have heard about morris?
They mention that they like the Michigan players because everyone is always relaxed and just has fun on the visits. No one is pressured or sold on Michigan. The visiting recruits ask the current players why they chose Michigan, they tell them why and that if Michigan fits them then they should to. The players know that Michigan isn't for everyone, so there isn't a ton of selling.
I have time for one more question then I'm going to go. Sorry about the auto-update, I'll have someone look into it.
Is it more likely that Michigan finishes the class strong and ends up with a top 2-3 class, or misses on some of the 50/50 guys (as happened in the 2012 class) to finish and ends up outside of the top 3 classes?
Another good question. I think there are enough top guys that Michigan is in on that they should have a chance to land some of the bigger names they're in on. Last year was a bit different because it was just a few guys and they were deciding late, so everyone was focused on those misses. I think Michigan should be able to close strong.
Alright, thanks everyone for joining me. I hope you enjoyed the chat. As always you can follow me on Twitter @TomVH, and make sure you sign up for WolverineNation for more updates and news. Have a great day.
