Fantasy Sports with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang! We're back for a rainy 60 minutes of fantasy chattage so let's get started, shall we? Second cup of coffee in hand. Who is - wait for it - up first?

Hanley (Miami)

No one is really talking about me? My counting stats have been good, but wheres the average? Worried about me?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I'm not worried, and in the re-ranks that should go up today on the site, I have HanRam at No. 5 overall. Considering how well the counting stats have been without average, I'm quite optimistic.

Matt (DC)

De Aza or Trout... who do you play?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Like em both, both right now I'm sticking with Trout.

Lee Workman (Oklahoma City)

How can Feldman get a loss for throwing 4 1/3 innings w/ 0 earned runs?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Because he lost. Unearned runs count on the scoreboard just the same as earned ones.

Harry (Portland)

AJ--any update on Freeman?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

Haven't heard anything new. Freeman left the game last night with blurred vision... that could be allergies, a poke in the eye, scratched cornea... who knows? Speculation would be foolish... news should come out soon.

MR. Wolfe (PA)

10 team roto league. I have Pujols and he is KILLING me! What should we poor Pujols owners do???

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

What can you do? Either keep him in there and wait for him to come around, or see if you can trade him for value, knowing full well that he may turn it around the moment you deal him.

Steve (IND)

Melky or Swisher ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Close call, but I give slight edge to Melky.

Eric (Chicago)

AJ, do you trust Henderson Alvarez today at home?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Always hard to pick SP or hitters to do well for one day only. I am not really a Henderson Alvarez supporter overall. Personally not likely to start him.

Steve (Work)

AJ: Read your book when do we get another one? Was offered Worley for Middlebrooks 10tm dynasty league? What's Worley's value going forward?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Thanks for the read! We'll see about another one... spread the word! I think Worley is a No. 5 SP in fantasy, so it comes down to Middlebrooks sticking or not and I lean to yes. (Which means I don't trade for Vance)

Chad (Charleston)

Someone sent me Darvish for Braun? Would you accept or not?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Not a chance. Yu has been good, but in first season in MLB, I still worry about how he does second half of year. Not giving up potential No. 1 overall hitter for him.

Stuart (Ontario)

Is it time to cut bait on Danks?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Long since past that time...

Dave (Denver)

Drew Smyly or James McDonald ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Another close call, but I go Smyly. Basing this one totally on lack of faith in PIT run support, though.

Joe (Richmond)

ARod has been exceeding his draft position, I think...except, where are the RBIs? Just a fluke that they are so low?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Can't drive in what isn't on base for you. RBIs are a function of team, not individual. I have A-Rod as top 50 going forward. 11 RBI in 32 AB with RISP not awful.

Max (Westchester)

Thoughts on Wei-Yin Chen? Legit?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Borderline No. 5 SP. I think he's a pitcher, meaning he knows how to get guys out without phenomenal stuff, and those guys tend to have more success over the long-term.

T-Dogg (the background)

Cut C. Pena for either A. Craig or LaRoche? need a 1b, slim pickings...

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

Either is fine for me... not exactly sure I'd be so disappointed with them either.

Scott (Rochester)

Loved the book! Replace Kemp with Dirks, Nava, Avery, Mayberry, Polanco or Elliott Johnson? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

Thanks! Dirks for me. Been a fan for some time, and glad to see the stats are there as well.

Ed (Charles Town WV)

I'm looking for a closer and the options are Reed, Rauch and Thayer. WHo has the best shot at keeping the gig?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

Thayer. Not sure Rauch "has" the gig at all and don't think Chicago will "trust" Reed with job.

Brian (Princeton, NJ)

RE: Closers....how's Soriano rank in that mix?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

Given the injury to Robertson, I think you have to put him in the mix. He's probably more likely to keep the job than any of the other trio mentioned.

Dan (Paterson)

Is Bud Norris a top 50 Starter?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

I think I might fit him in there just under the wire.

Arvydas Sabonis (Lithuania)

Altuve...keep him or shop him?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

I'd shop. If you could turn him around for a Hill/Johnson and an SP/other bat you're in good stead.

Judd (Granger)

didnt read your book, does that matter? Drop Jed Lowrie for Cozart, Aybar, Alexei or Peralta?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Ha! It matters to me, because I'd love everybody to do so. It does not matter in terms of a question being answered. And I say hang on to Lowrie.

Todd (CA)

Ibanez has been a pleasant surprise but doesn't seem to have much trade value. Your thoughts??

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

That's precisely because he has been a surprise. When nobody believes in April, few people are going to suddenly buy in with an older guy like Raul in May. I say ride him until he starts to slump and just enjoy the stats.

Carlos (Fort Myers)

J. Montero or J. Mauer? Why?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Mauer for me. Still a terrific eye at the plate and I have to believe the Twins (as a team)right the ship somewhat going forward.

Jon (Seattle)

Thoughts on Chris Sale ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

I'd stash him right now because I do think he can be a very good pitcher the rest of the way. But given the bizarre yo-yo treatment that the team gave him recently, I'm going to let him get back into a routine and make sure the arm issue is fully gone before he's in my rotation.

Scott (Scottsdale)

Friedrich or Diamond worth a look? Never heard of either one until a week or so ago.

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

And neither likely did the teams they were facing, which is why you should always take new SP with a grain of salt. Once teams start to break down video, then you can fully judge how well an SP will do.

Garrett (IA)

Has Yovanni turned it around after his slow start? Keep him or deal him for value?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Always be willing to deal for value. Right now, I'd try and convince other owners that he has turned it around, because I'm not 100 percent sold he has.

Nick (ATL)

Speaking of slow starts... Haren finishes as a top ___ SP. Take him for Heyward straight up?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Willing to accept that Haren's issues are injury-based and nothing more. One missed turn could be what he needs to right the ship. I'd say he's a top 30 SP. If you disagree, though, Heyward is equitable value.

Brian (NYC)

Doumit or Ike Davis ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Going to lean Doumit here.

Rick (Toronto)

Haven't read your book yet either, why should I in one sentence? Also, drop Ubaldo/Zambrano for James McDonald?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

I'd certainly drop Ubaldo for JM right now. Zambrano I am willing to give a bit more leeway. As for "selling the book" all I have to say is that those who have told me they've read it expecting to be entertained were indeed entertained.

Erik (LA )

Beachy for Beltre?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Fair swap.

Porky (the Little Apple)

What do you do with owners that seem to offer lopsided trades in their favor all year long? My inclination is to just ignore that owner for any future trades? What are your thoughts?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

I don't think you should outright ignore a guy like that... just because he thinks he's offering a lopsided deal and may be trying to "get you" that doesn't mean one offer might not seem incredibly lopsided in the opposite direction for you. Never cut off a potential trading partner if you don't have to.

Pat (Boston)

What about those who didn't expect to be entertained? How long do you think Beltran can keep this up for (accepting that "this" allows for some regression)

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

Those who didn't expect to be entertained put the book down and proceeded to watch "Whitney" instead. They, too, got their wish. I think Beltran, even when healthy, regresses to around No. 65 rest of the way.

Ben (Knox)

Been offered Kipnis and Jesus Montero for Cano. Good deal

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

No way I'm parting with Cano right now. It's not the worst offer in the world, but it's playing to your fear that Cano doesn't return to form.

Mike (Brooklyn)

Thoughts on Fister ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Love Fister. Loved him in the spring and don't have any less of a strong affinity now. Ranked him No. 174 overall in re-ranks.

jcwaveslider (ca)

AJ got any weather low downs in DC? Start straussy even tho it may go 3 inns or so?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

I'm no Al Roker, but it should be raining all day. I think you start Strasburg if you don't have a limit on starts, and you sit him if you do.

Jason (Pittsburgh)

Vargas or P Hughes?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Vargas by a light year.

Kevin (Baltimore)

Kyle Seager ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Didn't rank him, but I can see an outside shot at a top 100 finish for him. One of those guys that if I had him, I'd feel good about keeping him, but not one I'd actively pursue if I did not.

Kevin (LI)

Who are the biggest busts in fantasy this year? Pujols, Bautista, J Upton?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

We can recognize who has been bad so far, but it's what you do with that info that matters. I'd say Ryan Raburn and Francisco Liriano are the biggest busts, due to there being little chance of rectifying the poor starts or recouping any value.

Jon (Bozeman, MT)

AJ, who replaces Niemann in the TB rotation?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Maddon has said it won't be Davis, so expect a callup of Cobb or Archer, at least for the first start. After that, how that pitcher does may dictate where they go from there.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the whistle, gang. This hour flew by. We've got a Vokle video chat with Tristan at 2pm, so stop on by! Otherwise, Twitter (@ajmass) is there for you as well. Until the next time, as always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
