Hi gang. Here's my deeply personal column today on the loss of Dan Wheldon: http://tinyurl.com/dxpmv9z
If for some reason, SHR can't find sponsorship for the #39 car next year, what are some possible landing places for Newman? JGR? MWR? RPM? Back to Penske?
Ryan still could end up staying at SHR if they find the funding. Otherwise, he probably will be battling Kurt for the same spot at one of those teams.
Will dale jr win at charolette
I think he has a good chance based on what he showed in the all-Star Race, but 600 miles is a much different animal.
would creating a system that awards points based on car position each lap generate better racing?
Way too complicated. How about just more points for winning.
I went to a minor league baseball game on Sunday, and there were no sandbagging MLB players. Just wanted to throw that out there.
And no MLB stars trying to win games in Triple-A unless they are on a rehab assignment.
Obviously, NASCAR has the rest of 2012 to worry about but are you willing to make a guess as to whether or not we'll see changes to the 2012 All-Star race format (yet again) after the back-of-the-pack rodeo we saw on Saturday night?
It chances every year. That's a given. The sandbagging thing was a flaw, but the racing up front was great unless the last 10-lap segment when JJ ran away with it.
Is there any any substance to the story that Andretti is coming to NASCAR?
I doubt it. But it always come down to money. And any driver can make more money in NASCAR than he or she can in IndyCar. But Indycar needs him and they need him to win. Sunday would be huge.
Is there a better race weekend than this weekend for race fans? Memorial Day means Monaco in the morning, Indy in the afternoon, and the Coca-Cola 600 at night. What a day!
It's as good as it gets for gearheads. I've covered almost every major sports event in my career, but Monaco remains on my bucket list.
Do you think with lessening the turbo boost during the Indy500 that any Honda has a chance to win the Indy500? Chevy looks really strong as they have all year.
Things change in race conditions. I still think Chevys have a advantage, but the Hondas will race better than they qualified.
Admittedly, I am a newer NASCAR fan, but the points scoring seems off to me. How about doing away with the current points system and just going to descending points for the Top 20 finishers (kind of like F1 does).
I've said for a long time NASCAR shouldn't award points past 25th place. Then you wouldn't have torn up cars going back on the track and getting in the way after a wreck.
Where will you be this weekend, Terry? Indy?
I'll be at Indy. Haven't missed one in 20 years.
Will NASCAR drop a huge $50K fine on Brad K for his obscenity laced, vulgar tirade against Ron Hornday caught on live tv after the truck race?
No because it was a private conversation not intended for TV.
With the new body styles being implemented next season, will teams be starting from scratch again with the handling similar to the struggles with the COT debuted?
It'll be different, but in a good way. Teams will be allowed to make more adjustments than they do on the COT.
Big weekend coming up in Indy, Who is your predicted winner?
I honestly think they are about 10 of 12 drivers who cna win it. I'd love to see Helio win it for a fourt time.
Terry - as you know 2 of the 3 Roush cars had mechanical issues during the All-Star race. I understand they were special engine packages from Yates that they used, but how worried should I be that these issues will continue? And do you think our hometown guy The Biff has anything for JJ or is his hot streak like years past where the 48 will blow away everyone else?
No worries at all on the Roush engines for the 600. They were experimenting in the All-Star Race. I think Biff can contend all year. Matt Puccia is doing a great job as the CC. I know JJ is hot right now, but I don't see anyone running away with things.
With Hinchcliff on the front row at Indy in the Go Daddy car and Danica into the wall at a minor league race in Iowa do you think she's questioning her NASCAR experiment?
Not a bit. She smiling all the way to the bank.
Last week, Ed hinton said he could see Danica as a top 10-15 driver in nascar within the next 4 years. This comes after Michael Waltrip gave her an A+ for finishing 31st and 6 laps down at Darlington. Is Ed getting senile? Why are journalist going overboard to convince people that she can drive in Nascar? She's a stiff.
She's no stiff Yemi. I don't understand the hatred for her. Danica isn't the best driver out there, but she's far from the worst. She has the ablility to race well, but I admit I've been disappointed overall this year.
Helio didn't win Indy the third time, Paul Tracy did
Ahh, some controversy today. I like it. That point always will be up for debate.
With McDowell's history of overly aggressive driving do you expect NASCAR to penalize him for dumping Kurt on the last lap at Iowa?
No. Even Kurt said it was no big deal.
Is Jimmy Spencer still available? He needs to come back and teach Kurt Busch some manners.
I thought Kurt showed great manners in how he handled the situation with McDowell Sunday.
Who's been the bigger disappointment? Danica, Cole Whitt or the entire JRM team?
Whitt is no disappoinment. That kid is impressive. He has a bright future. But you make a good point in the fact that JR Motorsports equipment may be a notch behind right now.
i think on sunday was kurt busch trying to smooth over what happened at darlington way to be
No doubt, but at least he did it.
With the possibility of the US Military pulling all sponsorships from all motor sports would Hendrick have an easy time finding another partial sponsor for Junior? Are there sponsors not yet in the sport who will line up to sponsor him or will one switch teams possibly leaving another team sponsor-less? Big competition for the few companies willing to dish out the money, right?
No problem finding sponsors for Jr, but it might be tough to find one willing to spend as much as the National Guard is spending, about $25 million a year.
Why do they practice and qualify Thursday this week, then take Friday off?
It's nice not to conflict with what's going on at Indy.
Isn't JRM the official Hendrick Motorsports NW team?
Sort of. They have a affiliation, but it's still Junior's operation.
Would you like to see a couple of the last place drivers on each segment dropped from the All Star race? It would completely stop sandbagging and likely create some intense racing.
The easy fix is have the segment winners sit out until the final segment.
You mean a kelly Earnhardt operation?
You're right about that Sam. Kelley runs the show there. She told me a story once about how she was mad at Junior and was cussing him out in her office. Jr. walked out and came back a few minutes later with a yellow slip of paper. She said, 'What's this?" Jr. said. "I went to HR and had you written up for abusive langauage to your boss." She cussed again and told him to get out.
since Kenseth didnt blow up during the allstar race is it a safe assumption that he akes better care of his stuff?
No, just luckier than the other two guys. But it didn't hurt that he was able to coast in the back for a while after winning a segment.
With Rowdy earning 4th and Kurt 8th in the All-Star race are The Busch Brothers favorites to win the 600?
I don't see Kurt as the favorite to win any race on the team he drives for now. That doesn't mean he can't win it, but he's not the favorite.
Hi TB - Love the Turn 4 and Dan Wheldon article! Yes, I'm a gearhead, sports nut and also watch girly shows ie The BacheloretteNASCAR folks on Twitter have been unusually quiet about this..is there an unspoken cone of silence of some sort about not bringing more attention to the attention getter Bachelorette?
Laura, I don't watch that show so don't know much about it, but NASCAR loves all the attention it can get.
After coming up short at Richmond the past 2 races will Carl Edwards break through this fall?
He'll win a couple of races, but I don't think Richmond will be one of them.
What do you make of Harvick wrecking Menard and Paul publicly bashing Harvick's behavior?
Just boys being boys. No big deal.
Nationwide was great on Sunday, nice showing for Bubba Wallace, is he a real deal, too? Seems Austin Dillon is very consistent, too.
It's dangerous to make an evaliuation after one race, but every indication is Wallace has what it takes tio win at the Cup level in a few years. And what a polished kid he is. That was the first time he actually has done live pits stops, so finishing in the top 10 is remarkable.
Love Turn 4. Was gonna ask about Wallace today but you guys beat me to it. I think the kid's the real deal, any chance of him replacing Brian Scott as the full-time Gibbs NNS driver?
Bubba has a bright future, but which car he gets still is up in the air. Believe me, a couple of more races like Sunday and they'll make space for him.
OMG. Terry, your column on Dan Wheldon was wonderful. Just wonderful. Thanks for keeping him in our thoughts.
Thank you Jenny. One of the hardest things I've ever had to write, but it was heartfelt.
Its gonna be hard to bet against JJ in the 600....especially if there are no wrecks like during the Allsnooze race...my top 5 are ...48,88,5,29, 2
Good picks, but the Roush boys will have a say it in also.
They need to add top 10 in points to the All Star race. The fact that Truex and Dale Jr even had to race in the Showdown is crazy seeing they are top 5 in points. The fan vote needs to go also. The 47 had no shot at winning and took a spot from a competitive ride like the 56.
The only reason Bobby got in was that Jr. won the Showdown, so the fan vote went to the No. 2 vote getter. They won't eliminate the fan vote. Way too popular.
What's the situation in the 48/88 shop? Has Dale resigned himself to the fact that he will never be a Jimmie Johnson level racer?
Who is a JJ level racer right now? The man has five championships and probably will win more.
The big Holiday weekend is here and I will NOT be at Indy. So what is the Indy must have food or restaurant for you?
St. Elmo's steak house, hands down. One of America's great restaurants. And here's big tip. The shrimp cocktail is awesome, but it can kill you if you take a giant first bite. Vry hot, but old-timers who take newbies love to see them get surprised and don't tell them about it until after that first bite. So I just saved all of you.
Right now, Mark Martin is the greatest driver to never win a Cup championship. In 15 years, who else do you think may hold that crown? Carl Edwards? Kyle Busch?
Good question. Harvick might make that unfortunate list.
Dale's last win was Mich. June '08 and before that it was Richmond May '06 so technically, Dale has 1 win in the last 7 years going back 253 races. Is that the real stat people should focus on?
No it isn't. He's having a great year and finished 7th in the Chase last year. Bad drivers don't do that.
My thanks for the Dan Wheldon column, as well. Sometimes the most difficult assignments turn out the best.
Thank you Keith. Dan was a special guy and a great father.
How do the drivers go pee-pee during the Coca-Cola 600? Do they hold it for the whole race? Diapers? Or just stink up the firesuit?
This Hoosier is So envious you are going to be at Indy 500! Do you know what time the Indy 500 Chat starts? And stay cool in Indy, weather says gonna be a hot one!
I'm sure we'll start the chat right before the green flag. I see it may be 90. I've been to some Indy 500s when it was 50. You never know there in May.
Dan Wheldon was a great ambassador for the sport. I asked for his autograph and picture and he treated me like I was the only person on the track. And he wanted to make sure the picture came out ok. He was ready to retake the picture.
Dan was a big ham. He loved taking pics. And he loved doing practical jokes on a teammates.
Are the top five finishers in the 600 the same as the allstar race?
If that happens I will run down the frontstetch naked.
Terry whats your race weekend like with F1, Indy and the Coke 600.
I'll watch Monac from the Indy media center Sunday morning. Cover the Indy 500 that afternoon and watch the last half of the 600 from my hotel that night.
Why are some Nationwide teams like JR Motorsports able to survivie with only having Nationwide drivers but other teams like Gibbs and KBM need Cup drivers to be able to survivie in the NNS?
I don't think they do Larry. Team owners say sponsors want do it without a Cup guy I the car. Balonmey. Tell them if you want the Cup guy you can sponsor the Cup car. However, In JRM's case, Danica is a different deal.
Should we do a Turn 12 article the week of Sonoma?
If you really were K Lee, you would know there's no way he's editing 12 answers from each of us. It's enough torture for him just to do four.
If You could only watch one, which one, Indy 500 or Coke 600.
Indy, without guestion.
Or a Turn 3 article in a couple weeks for Pocono?
Now that we could do, but what would we do for the NHRA?
When Danica goes full-time cup in '13 do you know if she will quit NW?
I think she will run a partial NW sked.
If Danica does Indy 500 again what team do you think she will race for?
Impossible to say. It would depend on sponsorship, but she wouldn't do it unless it was a top team.
KLee's computer probably not working today, either :)
His office computer works great. He also has his own HD TV there with every chennel in the known world, although I doubt it ever leaves at ESPN platform.
If a track in CA doesn't draw why do you think one will in Seattle?
What does one have to do with the other? Nothing. Cali's problem is location and a track not conducive to good racing. There also are tons of Cnadian race fans would would come to an event in the Pac NW.
You missed the point in my Turn 4 question. If you could recreate any historic NASCAR track and put it in a big market, which would you choose?
I didn't miss the point. I wouldn't do it. That's my point.
There are some knowledgeable fans here who realise Nascar isn't the only series...I love it! Thanks to you all.
True race fans enjoy different forms of the sport at different times.
Do you think Kurt Busch is in line to take over the #24 since that historic car should be raced by a Sprint Cup champion?
Not gonna happen.
Do you think the efforts of two congress persons to stop the military to sponsor sports in general (NASCAR for one) will survive?
Hard to say, but I think the sponsorship is worth it for military recruiting and goodwill.
If your in control who does stenhouse replace in cup series? Or does someone more experienced like vickers get a ride?
The plan is for Ricky to get a fourth car at Roush if they have the sponsorship.
Gotta run folks. Time to pack and get ready to leave at oh-dark-30 in the morn for Indy. Have a great week and enjoy the best weekend of the year in racing. Peace.
