Thanks for coming on and interracting with us. Ready to answer any questions you have.
When do you think that you will race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series?
Uh, no rush on that right now. Hopefully, in the next four of five years. I've always taken my time in the series I"ve been in so I"ll be ready for that next step. Joey was kind of rushed into it. It's taken him a while to fully grasp onto it.
What do you think might be the biggest challenge for you this weekend at Charlotte?
I'm not racing at Charlotte. I wish I was. It's tough, but I was expecting it. They said the four races I had was Iowa, Iowa in August. Then it's Richmond and Dover. I was ready for it. the K&N series same way, Bristol, wait a month.
Do you think that the Nationwide car is way different than the K&N Pro Series car?
Yes. KN car you can slide around some more and not be able to fall off as much. NW car is more of a point and shoot car where you have to be able to point if off the corner to be better in the long run.
Beside yourself who enjoys racing in your family?
Everybody. My dad definitely enjoys it. We have our own racing pool between me, my dad, two of my cousins and two of my uncles. I definitely wore them out at the beginning of the season. I've already racked up a couple of hundred bucks. They're catching up with me now.
What was it like racing at Iowa in a Nationwide Car?
It was a lot of fun. Different than what I was used to in the KN car. I was treating it like I was on pins and needles way too much. I finally started to get the hang of it on the last restart. Logging laps and seeing I kept falling off the pace really quick till I finally got on the wheel and stayed right there with the.
Who do you see as some darkhorses for this week? What are your thoughts on the 5, 9, 20, 21, 22?
The 600, I haven't done any research. Take a JGR driver. Pit stops, Kyle Busch will be the best one based on All-Star qualifying.
What is your best memory from high school?
Oh, yeah, yeah. Hanging out with you. Oh, man. This is funny. I guess ... there were a lot of good times there. I'd say football games. Hey, you need to change your favorite driver to a JGR car. You're a Harvick fan, right?
Who is the most influential person in your life?
I'll say my dad. From hearing what he went through... he didn't graduate high school. He left six months before we did to move to Concord. He lived in shop, took shower with garden hose, opened up a Coke machine for a refrigerator ... to see where he is now ... he has his own business, opened first shop.
Whose your favorite Cup driver Darrel? Are you a short track guy or a super speedway guy?
My favorite driver is Kyle. He has that no fear attitude. He never wants to finish second. I'm a short track guy. I grew up on them. I haven't had a chance to run on anything bigger than a mile.
Darrell Wallace Jr what was the biggest challenge going from a kn east car to a nationwide car
Pit stops now, so you can go harder. I have to tell myself to go harder and get out there quicker, especially on restarts. I didn't do green flag pit stops, but I did a few under caution. They were pretty sketchy. The sketchiest thing was restarts. Everybody was aideways. You're on radial tires, so once the rear end kicks out it takes four or five laps to come in.
Get any tips from any drivers in the Garage before Iowa race in Nationwide?
Yep. McDowell. He told me some lifting points and where he was getting off the gas. Drew Herring, he gave us a ride around in the pace car and showed me the line, where he would run. He showed me where I should be and where I shouldn't. Then he me how to do pit stops.
Can you send me a autograph hero card? Thanks
Sure. Send a note to the PR department 13415 Reese Blvd W, Huntersville, N.C. Be glad to.
What is your favorite track you have raced on
Definitely be Dover. The first year I went there it was definitely intimidating. The second year I went in with a whole new attitude and came home with the win. Not being scared of going into one, that was it. You've really got to drive it hard in there to get it working.
Any drivers, current or retired, that you look up to or have has heroes?
Dale Earnhardt Sr. I mean, he was always my favorite driver. He was winning. I never got into NASCAR until a couple of years ago, but when I did he was always the one winning. Wendell Scott after hearing all the stuff he went through. Being able to meet his family, hear about his past and watch that documentary about him really put chills down my back. Now my favorite is Kyle Busch.
Are there any plans to run some arca races this year
Not right now. I'd like to. There's a bunch of good tracks they go to, superspeedways.
How hard is it for you to get sponsors? Are you personally involved in selling sponsorships, or do you have someone or a company that helps you with it?
I have a group of people that help me get sponsors. I don't really pay much attention to it. I do, but I don't. I just go out there and drive a racecar. I've been a part of board meetings with sponsors. It's kind of like throwing a middle schooler in college when they're talking this and that and what we should do. It's very hard. I've been trying to get a sponsor ever since I started racing. I definitely feel we're getting close to something. We defintely had a good run with Dollar General. Hope there is something there in the future.
What track did you grow up racing at?
Concord Speedway, 601. That's where I started out in go-karts. I still have a Legend car out there. I feel like me and the bad guys can beat up on some people. I'm one of the bad guys jumping down to that series and wearing them out.
Do you have a good relationship with Joe and JD Gibbs? They seem like good people.
Yes. I have a very good relationship. Not even 20 minutes after the race I was getting a phone call from Coach. On the flight home I got a call from J.D. He said he's still working on getting me a sponsor. Every day we have a five to minute conversation. It's not about racing. It's usually about family, sports, anything.
What are your thoughts about CNB Bank Raceway Park race later this year in East Series?
I don't really know. I've never really seen it. We migh tgo test up there. I'm looking forward to it. It's another track I've never drven on.
Are you treated differently in the garage area, or do most people in the garage see you as just and up and coming race car driver?
From Iowa experience they just see me as another driver. At Iowa I was, 'Who's that guy?' I didn't experience any negative feelings. Some guys I knew from growing up on pit crews. Some were probably checking out the suit. It was bright. You couldn't miss it.
Do you enjoy social media and interacting with the fans?
For sure. This right here is pretty cool. Having a lot of fun with it. The questions are great. I'm always on Twittre. I just got verified. I got an email from Twitter at 1030 or so one night. I deleted it. I went on to see how mnay followers I had and there was that little checkmark. Me and a teammate had a bet on who would get verified first. I won.
Any favorite sports away from racing? Favorite teams?
Definitely a Tennessee Vols fan. My mom went there. She's from Knoxville. She ran track at Tennessee. She was pretty good. She held her own. Definitley a Redskins fan. The best sport to watch for me is college football. I kind of tell people you pick somebody that's really good. So you go with a Tim Tebow even though I hate the Gators. You kind of follow that person throughout their four years. When you get to the NFL they kind of level off. I just see them as all the same.
Do you think iRacing helps you prepare because you need to race against me on it?
For sure. It definitely helps when my computer doesn't crash. I try to run at the tracks I am going to in the near future.
I am a Harvick fan and a Wallace Fan. You got to race with me on iRacing.
I'll be sure to get on there one day and wear you out.
Any plans of running full-time in Nationwide next year?
It's all up to sponsorship. I'm hoping if we can find a fulltime sponsor we can go full speed with it.
Thanks for everybody joining. I had a great time. I definitely want to do this again soon. Be sure to follow me on Twitter at @BubbaWallace. Have a great week.
Thanks to Darrell Wallace for chatting with us. He was great and had a blast. Now you've got me for 30 minutes. Let's keep it going. Fire away.
Wher do you think that Ryan Newman will sign with for the 2013 Sprint Cup Series Season?
Well, Tony Stewart says he wants Newman back at SHR if sponsorship can be found. That's the key for a lot of folks, but I would imagine from Tony's comments Ryan will stay put.
Before you pacify Jr. Nation with a win prediction, please note that he beat 2nd and third tier drivers to qualify, then he won his leg when the big dogs were lagging. A fifth place finish with a huge advantage belies his abilities. By the way, tall Tyler I'm not Octo.
You left out Junior had the best average finish of any driver in the All-Star race. And I'm not picking him. Hard to pick against Jimmie Johnson the way he is running.
david, anytthing new on dodge, and whats this andretti rumor ?
Other than they hope to make some announcement by mid-summer. Maybe Indy is the place. Not sure about this Andretti rumor. That would be a reach.
Hi David, any chance that all 3 JGR drivers finish in the top 10 this weekend. Also I saw Roush Fenway Racing sponsoring Ricky this weekend, is he also having trouble getting sponsorship as well???
Definitely a chance the way those drivers are at Charlotte. Kyle Busch I especially like this weekend outside of Johnson. And yes, Ricky Stenhouse and Roush Feneway have been having trouble all year with fully sponsoring the car. That Matt Kenseth still has eight to 10 open races is amazing. He could win the title.
Will your uncle Rusty be voted in to the HOF today?
Not my uncle, but it could happen. He's not on my top 5. I believe some of the pioneers should go in first.
What is going through you mind as the pace car signals one lap to go to start a race.
Sure this was for Darrell, but since he's gone I'll answer. I'm thinking this is going to be one of the more exciting moments of the race since restarts have become that. Sorry I didn't get this one posted for Darrell.
Who is your pick to win the Coke 600
Jimmie Johnson. Hate to say it, but he'll be the favorite the next three weeks the way he runs at Dover and Pocono, and with the way that team has its game on.
Thanks for the time! Great chatting with ya!
Darrell and I thank you.
I know you pcked up 1 new fan this week in me. Good luck in the future! Have you ever talked to or received pointers from Smoke?
This with my history with Smoke I definitely know was for Darrell. I interviewed Darrell for half an hour before the chat and Smoke's name never came up. Glad to see there's a new fan out there.
Newt, how would you rate Kahne's chances for this weekend? Do you feel like the #5 team has turned the corner? Thanks
He's really, really good at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Yesterday, I was with him and Rick Hendrick and Hendrick asked him if he was going to win the race. Kasey said, 'I'd like to.' Rick said, 'That's not good enough.' So Kasey said he would win. I'd definitey put him in my top five picks for Sunday's race.
How does it feel having a NASCAR Superstar stud like Kyle Busch as a JGR teammate and has Rowdy helped you with advice?
Another one for Darrell that I think I can answer. He told me he talks to Kyle about as much as anyone for advice, but he really doesn't seek much advice yet. He's just getting to the same tracks that Kyle drives. I suspect he'll lean on him and the rest of his JGR teammates more as he advances.
David, look into your crystal ball for 2013 for silly season. Stenhouse in the 6, RPM's manufacturer, and Andretti/Furniture Row as Dodge outfits in 2013?
Stenhouse will be in the 6 unless absolutely no sponsor is found. RPM will stay with Ford and I can see Furniture Row in a Dodge, but that one is a little cloudy.
Newt, I've been a NASCAR fan for more than 20 years and have been seeing a lot of "Greatest Moments at Charlotte" pieces this week and everyone says the Pass in the Grass. What's the big deal with it? I thought "One Hot Night" was 10 times better!
I agree. The way they wrecked going to the finish was more exciting. Wish we had some of that in this past weekend's All-Star race.
Will we see Logano still at JGR after this season?
I asked Joe Gibbs that yesterday and that is his hope. He said the focus is getting the No. 20 up to speed with the 11 and 18. He didn't sound like an owner who had given up on his driver.
Hey Newt, if Stewart want Stenhouse for the #39 do you see Newman going to Furniture Row?
I don't see Roush letting Stenhouse go to Stewart or Chevrolet. He'd run the 6 unsponsored to keep him from doing that. And again, Stewart wants to keep Newman, so unless I am missing something here neither will happen.
Will congress pass to ban the military to sponor NASCAR? It will impact SHR more so than Dale Jr.
They've been down this road before in congress. True, they've gotten further along than before, but the military really likes its presence in NASCAR and sports. I don't see it going totally away. If it does, it definitely will impacdt SHR more.
Do you think Michael Waltrip and Aarons would consider putting Newman or Kurt Busch in the 55 car so they can have a driver that is competing for a title full time? And move Martin to a 4th car part time (if there are sponsors)? Or dump Martin for the next best thing like they did with Reutimann?
That would be interesting. I know they like Kurt, but Gibbs told me he does too. Not sure Kurt's image fits Aaron's. Can't see him and Waltrip doing any funny commercials. I'd be more inclined to think Kurt, if that happened, would be in the fourth car. Michael might want to keep Aarons and the 55 with Martin so he can run a few races.
Will 11 races in the books, who to date, is your, front runner to win the cup.
Sorry, but Johnson. Best driver, best crew chief and best pit crew now it appears.
David - in turn 4 you mentioned wanting to see a short track in Chicago. Why are there so many 1.5 milers on the tour anyway?
Because track owners saw the potential to put in more seats and suites and condos around that size track when the sport was at its height in popularity. Basically, greed. You can sell a lot more seats at a 1.5-mile track than a short track. Plus it opens up more room for more infield campers, another selling point. It had nothing to do with the quality of racing.
Enjoyed your response to my Turn 4 question. The conversation on that article brought up a few other tracks people would like to see brought back and put in better markets. One that caught my attention was Trenton Speedway (Kidney shaped 1.5 mile). Do you know much about that track when it was around and do you think something like that would go over well in today's NASCAR??
Thanks. I don't know much about that track or its history, but odd shaped tracks such as Darlington and Martinsville are at the top of my favorites list, so I'd probably like Trenton.
Is it a problem with RFR selling sponsors or do they charge more to sponsor the car? Most of the top teams seem to be able to find sponsorship, but they seem to struggle.
Lots of behind the scenes stuff not really meant for here, but I think things are improving over there and that will change in the future. Look at what they are doing with Edwards in particular.
Have you heard anything on Stenhouse going to Stewart Haas?
Just rumors that I don't see happening.
Mr. Newton, ever waved the green flag to start a cup race?
No, but I want to. At Darlington.
Your predictions for this year's HOF? AND - your picks for this year's HOF?
Curtis Turner, Joe Weatherly, Fireball Roberts, Leonard Wood and Rick Hendrick. But I am subject to change on a few of the first three. Just want to see some pioneers go in.
With Kurt rumored to be going to RCR where do you see Harvick landing? Furniture row maybe?
Are you kidding. Harvick has a long-term deal. He's their best driver. He's not going anywhere. Kurt is rumored to RCR, JGR, MWR and probably somewhere else I've missed. That one will be interesting.
Who from ESPN is going to monitor Clint Bowyer's chat?!?!? Clint can be very colorful as you know on twitter.
Not me, but I'd like to be there. I'm in a conference room at JGR.
What are you hearing about Monster Energy and Rowdy taking KBM up to Sprint Cup?
They did back him for the All-Star race, but it'll have to be some deal that Kyle agrees to because they are locked into his NW team.
Newt, thanks for answering my question in Turn 4 because it really made my day to see you guys acknowledge me and made me feel important! Thank you soooooooo much!
You're all important.
Whats with the "sorry" when keep picking Johnson?
I guess because many fans hate it when you pick the best driver, in particular when he's Johnson.
Do you think Dale's 4 year, 141 race losing streak is more important or his 1 win since May 2006, 235 races ago?
Making the Chase.
DN.. this is the one rumor we really need to put to rest: I heard you play a pretty mean game of cornhole with the other media types. Any truth to this?
I hear there's this PR type at JGR who thinks he is the Tiger Woods of cornhole. I'm thinking he's like the Tiger we know now, very unreliable, and that I could take him.
Do you think NASCAR went light on RCR-Sadler only docking them 6 drivers/owners pts. for the Iowa cheating?
Seemed pretty fair to me.
I agree with Andrew, it is great to have the personal interaction with the folks at ESPN...and the fans. We appreciate it more than you know!
Thanks. And with that I have to get to the Hall of Fame for the announcement. Thanks for those that participated with Darrell Wallace and myself. He's a cool kid I hope you all get to know better in the future. And I hope one day we can have a chat with him where his race isn't a factor, that his skills as a driver is. From what I saw today it's getting much closer to that. And if I missed your question today, I'm back tomorrow for a bonus Thursday chat. See you then from Charlotte Motor Speedway.
