Chat with Beano Cook

Beano Cook
  (3:04 PM)

Good afternoon and it is nice to be back talking college football with you. This is our monthly chat during the off-season and I will be back again in June, check your local listings.

Bill (NYC)

Why does the Big Ten whine about playing in the Bowls with ideal weather? Tickets are split up proportionally. The home field advantage is UCLA if and when they make it. They have plenty of time to get acclimated to the time difference. How many games do they actual play during the regular season in the so called elements.

Beano Cook
  (3:06 PM)

Mr. Delany forgets that the first 13 games, the Big Ten won 12 of them. The only one they lost was January 1, 1953, with Wisconsin lost to USC, 7-0. On January 1, 1949, Northwestern, the second-best team in the Big Ten, beat California, 20-14. All Mr. Delany likes to do is whine and make excuses when his teams lose to SEC teams.

Beano Cook
  (3:07 PM)

Mr. Delany does deserve kudos for getting Nebraska to join the Big 10. It was one of the best acquisitions since the Louisiana Purchase. That was unbelievable.

Brady Hoke (Ann Arbor)

Is Denard Robinson going to play in such a way this year that he helps cement my legacy at Michigan or will he make me want to pull my hair out?

Beano Cook
  (3:09 PM)

See me in November. Or maybe September first after Michigan plays Alabama in Dallas. Let me assue you that Hoke would prefer to have Robinson on his side instead of facing him with his defense.

William Thomas (Buchanan, VA)

Hey Beano! I know why SDSU and Boise made the move to the Big East and that the only sport they will be competing in is football. Is it just me or does it bug you too that SDSU and Boise will be part of the Big East when they are located all the way out on the west coast? Shouldn't the conferences keep in mind the geography and whether or not the fans can travel that far?

Beano Cook
  (3:10 PM)

I agree with you. It doesn't bug me, but in many ways it does not make sense, especially with the travel and considering the fans. They are not always part of the equation when figuring these things out.

Vinnie (ATL)

Are you rooting against the Heat?

Beano Cook
  (3:12 PM)

Everybody in America, except for people in South Florida, are rooting for the Heat to lose. I think as many people are rooting against Miami that are rooting against the Taliban.

Mike (Huntsville)

Beano - aside from Michigan-Alabama, what are some of the other early season non-conf matchups you are most looking forward to?

Beano Cook
  (3:15 PM)

I have to be honest, I have ot studied every schedule. Notre Dame-Miami is not that early but that is interesting. Boise State-Michigan State is very interesting. LSU vs. Washington on September 8th is interesting.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who do you think will be the Best College Football Team in 2012?

Beano Cook
  (3:16 PM)

Right now, my pick to play for the national title is USC vs. Arkansas. I ahve the week before September 1st to change and make my final prediction.

Dom (NY)

Beano, I started following college football in 1966- the Irish were fortunate to win the mythical championship that year. Will I ever see another? I think Brian Kelly is a very good coach, the turnovers probably cost them a chance at a top level bowl game last year. Do you think Kelly can get ND to a BCS bowl game in the next few years?

Beano Cook
  (3:19 PM)

I think he has to get Notre Dame bowl game in the next two years. This season is unlikely but the schedule sets up well for him in 2013. I believe he has a legit shot to get it done. The tougher games are at home in 2013 and that will help a lot. It is hard to believe that the Irish last won a national title in 1988, beat West Virginia out in Arizona. In my opinion, it is impossible to comprehend why they have not won at least one more since. If I had said that back in 1988 that ND would not win another title, you would have laughed.

Wyatt Hubbard (Austin, TX)

Do you feel like Texas can win the Big 12?

Beano Cook
  (3:21 PM)

It comes down to Texas and Oklahoma and the Sooners have had some issues at WR. The Longhorns have the material to do it, but that doesn't mean they are going to. At least they bounced back last year.

Alexander` (Pittsburgh)

Thoughts on Bill O'Brien at penn state? Shouldn't some of the former JoePa assistants get jobs elsewhere?

Beano Cook
  (3:23 PM)

First of all, to address Mr. O'Brien, he doesn't have a backbreaking schedule, playing a non-conference schedule that is not that tough. The Big Ten doesn't look as tough as the SEC, so I think O'Brien will do a good job there. I think that Paterno's former assistants should get a chance at jobs, the ones that left Penn State.

Austen Bryant (Miami, FL)

Do you believe Al Golden will coach Miami to at least a 10 win season this year or do you believe they will have some struggles?

Beano Cook
  (3:25 PM)

They play Florida State, Notre Dame, and winning 10 games would be a real accomplishment. I like him as a coach and he has cleaned up a lot there. What he did at Temple was incredible. One big advantage of coaching at Miami -- the state has no income tax!

Hilda (AZ)

Did Arizona get Rich Rodriguez the coaching genius from WVU or Rich Rodriguez the failed coach at UM?

Beano Cook
  (3:27 PM)

That one will have to be answered later in the season. I cannot believe how bad the teams were when he coached at Michigan. Look at how Hoke turned things around in one year. Rich Rod's record in league play was stunning. The cupboard in never bare at Michigan. Arizona has to replace Nick Foles at QB for starters.

Brian (Washington, DC)

With campus sites shot down, conf. champions priority most likely getting left behind, and all playoff/NC games being forced below the Mason-Dixon line - why should all the other conferences roll over and let the SEC get everything it wants? Can we just upgrade the SEC championship to the NC game from here on out?

Beano Cook
  (3:29 PM)

I get tired of the complaining abut where the games are played. The fact is, the SEC is the strongest conference and that is why they are winning. Notre Dame beat Alabama in 1973 in the Sugar Bowl. Penn State beat Georgia for the national title in 1982 in the Sugar Bowl. I am just giving you some examples. Right now, the SEC is just better and has won six national titles in a row. Enough said.

Todd (Houston)

Can Case Keenum make it in the NFL?

Beano Cook
  (3:30 PM)

The former Houston QB signed with the Texans as a free agent. He obviously had a great college career but that doesn't always translate.

Robert (Cedar Rapids)

1988 was closer to Ara Parseghian than it is to Brian Kelly.

Beano Cook
  (3:31 PM)

Lou Holtz won it in 1988. That is a long time ago for Irish fans. 1949-66 was the longest drought before this one.

Mike (Melbourne, FL)

Who wants to travel to Michigan or Ohio in January?

Beano Cook
  (3:33 PM)

There is some truth to that. It would not bother me if the ganes were there. There is a chance to have the championship game up for bids in the future and cities like Saint Louis, Indianapolis and Detroit could all bid and have indoor stadiums. I am tired of the whining.

Michael (Waco)

How do you think Art Briles and the Baylor Bears will look this year? Do you think they'll win another bowl this year? Do you think Nick Florence will do well this season? What do you think the running back core will look like? And do you believe the defense will be better this year?

Beano Cook
  (3:35 PM)

Baylor could have a tough time without Griffin at QB. Its first conference game is in Morgantown against West Virginia. They also lost Gasaway at running back. Defense has to improve and not get into as many shootouts since Griffin is gone.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Is this the year Lane Kiffin gains national respectability and the shadow of Pete Carroll no longer hovers over him and the USC program?

Beano Cook
  (3:37 PM)

Pete Carroll won two national championships and almost won a third one. USC will be one of the favorites going into the season and I have them in my title game too. Kiffin has not really been in the shadow.

TK (Philly)

Who was the GREATEST college football player you have ever seen?

Beano Cook
  (3:40 PM)

Wow, that is an intresting question. Off the top of my head, O. J. Simpson would be right up there. You usually pick an offensive player. I did not see Cam Newton in person but he might be up there, that was as good as any player had in one season. The greatest I have seen int he last 30 years may be Tim Tebow.

Mark (Chicago)

Will Illinois surprise some people this season?

Beano Cook
  (3:42 PM)

I have been waiting for 30 years for the Illini to surprise somebody. For 50 years, I have not understood why they have not won more games. They have great fans support and often have good athletes but lack consistency. I do not understand why they do not win more games and challenge in the Big Ten.

Mike (Melbourne, FL)

What do you expect from the Gators offense this year? Certainly it can't get any worse. Running backs look improved, and QB's should have more poise with experience. WR still a big ??

Beano Cook
  (3:43 PM)

I think we will find out early for coach Muschamp. They are on a semi-hot seat. The Gstors looked so poorly disorganized last season but that was only one year. They have a chance to respond and bounce back. There is some pressure on.

pkdot (boston)

Beano - one coach for one game - who?

Beano Cook
  (3:44 PM)

Boy, that is another good one. Right now I would pick Nick Saban. I would have to look at Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer right now too. You cannot dispute Nick Saban's record.

Jim (Memphis)

You like the new SEC-Big 12 champion bowl game?

Beano Cook
  (3:46 PM)

I do not like it as of now. I want to see what happens and see if the colleges vote on a playoff. Down the line, I might like it. Each day, college football is becoming more and more like the NFL.

Tina (Wiener Neustadt Austria)

who are some of your dark horse for the heisman

Beano Cook
  (3:48 PM)

Well, favorites are probably Matt Barkley and maybe Landry Jones. Montee Ball may be a darkhorse though everyone knows who he is. West Virginia's QB perhaps. Tyler Wilson of Arkansas could be considered a sarkhorse. We will find out about Arkansas early. Alabama faces them on September 15th.

Mike (Huntsville)

Beano - back from the Mets vs Pirates game so soon?

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

I prefer the chat to baseball. Pirates are still in the hunt, and that is amazing considering how little offense that lineup produces.

Tom (Oklahoma)

Can Landry Jones win the Heisman?

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

He could. Oklahoma will be good, though his receiving corps took a bit of a hit.

Beano, come on man, it's too early for CFB ok? Go watch law and order and chill out ok? Get a life dude!!! Go somewhere and cool out!!!

Beano Cook
  (3:51 PM)

I prefer Hawaii 5-0 and McGarrett, thank you. Book em Dano.

David (Michigan)

I bleed maize and blue, but I have to admit Dantonio has made things interesting. As coaches, how do you see Hoke and Dantonio matching up?

Beano Cook
  (3:53 PM)

Michigan State has been very solid and this is a very good rivalry, sometimes overshadowed by Michigan and Ohio State. I like the job D'Antonio has done though the Spartans have to replace Kirk Cousins and that won't be easy.

Keenan (Atlanta, GA)

Will the natives call for Mark Richt's head if the Bulldogs don't make it back to Atlanta? The favorable schedule is unbelievable for Georgia this year?

Beano Cook
  (3:54 PM)

I agree. I think Georgia will play for the SEC title and I picked Georgia to get to the national title game because of the schedule and then they opened 0-2 before responding. I think the Bulldogs are a legit contender to play for the national title. There will be some pressure on coach Richt.

Beano Cook
  (3:55 PM)

Thanks for all of your questions. See you sometime in June, probably June 20th at 3 pm ET.
