Fantasy Sports with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (10:59 AM)

Good morning gang! Hope you had a good weekend. Plenty of fantasy chattage to get to, so let's not dilly or dally. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?

Matt (Toronto)

AJ... What do I do with Matt Moore in a ten team mixed? I'm too afraid to start him, but his upside keeps me holding onto a usable roster spot.

AJ Mass
  (11:01 AM)

Agreed that it is scary, but I think coming off yesterday's outing, you can see a glimpse of what could come. I'd still go matchups with him right now, but can't/won't cut him.

Fitzy (Mass)

AJ am I crazy thinkin' McDonald & Dickey can keep this up? Are they must starts in wkly h2h? thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I have a bit more faith in McDonald than I do in RA, especially in terms of the K totals... but certainly with a weekly reset, there's no reason not to start both right now.

Micah (CT)

David Wright is slumping for the first time. Would you sit him for morneau this week?

AJ Mass
  (11:03 AM)

Did you really expect .400 all season? All hitters have good and bad weeks, but to try and guess where and when? Not possible. I'll stick with Wright.

Rich (Kalamazoo)

Interesting offer - which side you on? Verlander & Teixera for Haren, Pujols

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

I'd take the Verlander side, though one can easily argue either.

Tom (NY)

So I lost Pedroia AND Weaver to injuries.... my weekend was as great from a fantasy standpoint....:::sigh:: any words of advice??

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

Tough hit, but this is a marathon and not a sprint. This is why you need to always be working on improving your bench, even if you don't ever plan to use them... at some point, you may end up having to... Hang in there and don't overreact by making any rash deals.

jcwaveslider (ca)

Lucroy woes...is Cuddyer and Scherzer or Morrow too much for Posey or McCann? h2h points

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

You're in need, so you may have to spend a bit more. I'd prefer giving up Max and getting Posey.

Mark (NY)

Who closes for Cubs/Mariners?

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

Good question. I don't believe the managers know for sure... gambling, I go Russell and Wilhelmsen for now.

Romero (Bronx)

Just read your book, I have to admit I didn't have high hopes for it, but you proved me wrong. I fully enjoyed it and recommend it to not only those who have doubts, but to everyone in general. Well written my man. With that said, who do you like ROS: J. McDonald or F. Paulino and Salty or Arencibia?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Thanks, I think... I like McD and Salty. Mmmmm... need to go get some fries now.

GoCelts! (Beantown)

I was about to cut Buchholz, and then he finally had a great game. Is he worth keeping now?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

I hesitate to change my opinion of a player based on on outing. I'd go with my gut and try and trade him to someone who feels optimistic.

Jay Y (East Longmeadow, MA)

Homser or Jaime Garcia?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Taking need out of the mix, I'd rather have Garcia right now.

Arvydas Sabonis (Lithuania)

Altuve, Trumbo, Reddick...hold or sell?

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Altuve I trade. Trumbo I keep. Reddick I only deal for really solid value.

JT (Austin)

Battle of the ON FIRE SPs... Sale or Beachy?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Sale gets the nod.

Hank (Philly)

The Rumor Mill has Roy Oswalt signing with a team very soon, is he worth stashing??? 14 Team Mixed??

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

Absolutely. Worst-case scenario, he struggles and you cut him. Best-case scenario, he has a Clemens-like rebirth.

Mike (NY)

Kelly Johnson, can he be a top 5 2B rest of the way?

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

My guess is that he is not.

Tom (Calif)

Short term, Frenchy or Viciedo?

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

I want to say Frenchy. Getting a lot closer to the player I was hoping for in spring.

Benny (NYC)

Rather own Laroche or Lahair?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

I'd go with LaRoche, especially if Morse returns soon and is back to the player we used to know.

Bill (Chicago)

Can Adam Dunn continue on a pace anywhere close to what he's been up to?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

I think he definitely can. K rate is always going to be tremendous, but in an OBP league or points, the walks cover a lot of that issue.

Freddie (Waiting room)

Doc, how long will it take for my sports goggle prescription? Will I be able to play soon?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

No guarantee that fixes the problem. I'm certainly of the mind to let Freeman be somebody else's issue.

Adam (Lafayette )

Weaver injury didn't look good last, night any thoughts?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

When a team is talking both X-rays and an MRI, there's reason for concern. I'd prepare for a DL-stint and expect a Triple-A call-up to fill in for at least one turn if he avoids that fate.

Bob (Ft. Lauderdale)

Freeman follow up.....what would you consider fair value in a trade?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

Problem is, you're dealing from a position of weakness given his vision issues. I'd say you may be able to get a Brantley or a Headley, but it all depends on the other guys' risk tolerance.

Dave (PHILLY )

Ethier seems to cool off a lot after the first half.......should we not expect that since he is in a contract year?

AJ Mass
  (11:26 AM)

I'm not a believer in the contract year thing. It's foolish to think Ethier wasn't trying in previous second-halves. I like him. I think he can keep this up. $$$ doesn't enter into my thought process.

Dave (NJ)

C'mon AJ - I know each case is different, but you really talk out of both sides of your mouth. You advocate 'patience' with Weaver, despite a possibly serious back injury and then in your next breath, recommned dumping Freeman for Headley/Brantley (essentially WW fodder). Again, I recognize each case is unique and obviously Weaver is much more established than Freeman, but why shouldnt patience be a more common approach? Freeman could productively return tomorrow.

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Dave, with all due respect, you need to read more carefully. With Weaver I said to prepare for a DL-stint and with Freeman I said I thought that Headley/Brantley (incidentally both top 75 hitters in current value) might be all you *could* get... Plus we don't know extent of Weaver's injury yet and we do know that Freeman's issue is one that could easily linger all year.

Frankie (Atlanta)

Vogelsong, Parker or Masterson for a spot start streamer today???

AJ Mass
  (11:31 AM)

If I had to go with one, it would be Parker.

Nick (Atlanta)

Wieters has cooled off lately. Any worries?

AJ Mass
  (11:33 AM)

Ebb and flow is to be expected, especially in catchers as the weather gets warmer, but I don't think the bottom drops out here.

Shaun (OH)

Sell high on Prado, or hold?

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Always willing to trade anybody for value. That said, I think Prado's ROS value is not too far off his YTD value right now. I'd be more than happy to hang on to him.

Jeff (East Bay, CA)

Just wanted to say props for the Dr. Horrible reference in your book. Do you need anything moistened, made soggy?

AJ Mass
  (11:36 AM)

LOL. No, I think we got things covered. But thanks for the reminder that I need to do some laundry.

Steve (IL)

AJ, can you please give us some context on Oswalt? Who are a few pitchers you'd drop today to take a chance on Oswalt having a Clemens-like rebirth?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Obviously, you need to have enough SP who are currently active to fill whatever your minimums are. That said, I'd consider parting with spot starters in the neighborhood of say, Millwood, Arrieta, Harang, Harrell and Saunders.

Goochie Gooch Goochie (Vermont)

Garrett Richards the likely call if Weaver goes to the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

That's the sense I get from those in the know.

Rick (Toronto)

Commissioner Question: Does a trade have grounds for dismissal with injuries that happen during the waiting period? A trade went through with Pedroia and Lucroy and now they're both out for a couple weeks...

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Buyer beware. As long as the deal was made and accepted in good faith, if there is an injury in the interim the only way I would void deal is if BOTH involved parties agree to void it.

Andrew (West Chester, PA)

Zobrist for Gallardo?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

Value-wise I don't think YoGa is worth it right now.

Rob (State College)

Pedroia's out a couple of weeks? I only saw that he's day to day.

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

To clarify, Pedroia is a day-to-day thing with his thumb at the moment. Thought the previous question was valid, regardless, but sorry for the confusion.

Scott (Scottsdale)

Another trade question: what do you think of guys that always initiate a lowball offer and then state that they are 'just trying to get a dialogue started'? I don't buy it. I feel as though if you're serious about trading, you make a reasonable offer.

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

It tells you a bit about the person you are dealing with, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it. Why not make an offer than is less than what you'd be willing to end up giving? It's good strategy to have wiggle room for negotiations. Plus, my definition of player value and "reasonable" is not necessarily the same as yours... hence the reason we may ultimately end up trading.

Chris (Richmond)

Sean Rodriguez, Tyler Greene or Ryan Roberts as a fill-in for Pedroia?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Greene.

Nick (Maryland)

Melky has been a five-CAT stud so far, does he keep this up?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

I don't think he ends up top 10, but I do think this is somewhat legit. Would not be shocked to see a .320-10-25 season in the final tally.

jack (texas)

Pick 1 to trade. Betancourt, Casilla or Reed?

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

I'd trade Reed.

Britt (Brittsville)

Please...need steals. Jemile Weeks for my Adam Dunn is good, no?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

I'd avoid that deal. We are talking about a player hitting worse than Adam Dunn right now.

Anthony (Utah)

Josh Johnson or Ervin Santana?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

JJ for me.

Paul (Chicago)

Aviles or Seager at 3B?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Coin toss really, but I think I'd take a chance with Kyle.

Jimmy (Baltimore)

been holding onto Duda all season, awaiting his breakout. Time to cut bait?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

More than willing to go to the Camptown Races to scout new blood.

Tom (Brentwood)

What should one do with Heath Bell? Start him & take the saves when they come along, bench him

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Good question and one I've been wrestling with myself. I'd say as long as he has the closer's job and you are trolling for saves, you have to leave him in. Otherwise, why bother keeping him rostered.

Micah (Go Braves!)

ROS - do you like Ike or LoMo at 1B? Thanks AJ!

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Logan for me.

Nick (Maryland)

F. Hernandez end up in the top five?

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

I'd say top 10 pretty solid bet... top 5 certainly a strong possibility.

Felix Doubront (Boston)

I've been dealin' so far this season. How legit do you think I am?

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

Pleasantly surprised with Doubront, but value tied highly to K's. I'd say borderline No. 5 right now.

Andy (Madison)

Need a short term outfield fill-in... Tank Viciedo, Brantley or Ibanez?

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

I'd probably go with Raul in a short-term scenario.

Lance Lynn (STL)

What is my value in a trade for batters?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

From a performance standpoint, Lynn is equivalent to Granderson. However, getting Curtis' owner on board with that assessment might not be so easy. As always, I suggest seeing what the market will bear and judging best offer.

Will (The OC)

Stash Rizzo?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

If you have the room. Might be too late in most leagues.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the whistle, gang. Time flies! We're back at 2pm with Tristan for our Vokle chat and there's always Twitter (@ajmass) if I didn't get to you. Until the next time, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor!
