Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

All right. Let's go.

Anthony (nYc)

Please tell me Giants are not thinking about getting Plax? I think they have plenty of talent at WR.

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

I will now copy/paste something Ohm Youngmisuk just tweeted from the Giants' charity golf tournament, literally moments ago: "Coughlin was asked if there was any consideration to bringing back Plaxico Burress with Nicks injury. Coughlin shook his head and mouthed no"

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

So, there you go.

BKW (MD)

Seeing how both players are disgruntled, how 'bout a straight up Osi for Mike Jenkins trade?

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

No chance. First of all, it'd be a steal for the Cowboys and the Giants aren't going to trade Osi in the division. Neither guy's getting traded, folks.

Drew Brees (On a shrimp boat in the Gulf)

In your judgement which NFC East team would be the best fit for me?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

Really interesting question. Which team(s), if any, in the NFC East would trade their QB for Brees? I welcome your thoughts on this.

Danny (Pennsylvania)

Do you see Sean Lee becoming one of the best Linebackers in the NFL this season?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

I think he was that last September and October, so if he's back to full health, sure.

Jared (Los Angeles)

Why do the Eagles shy away from bringing a veteran safety into camp? they didnt do it last year and doesnt look like they will this year..it cant hurt..only help.

Dan Graziano
  (12:04 PM)

They made a run at Yeremiah Bell, and there are vet safeties still on the market. I don't think they'll shy away if they find a guy they like for the right price.

BKW (MD)

"Neither guy's getting traded, folks."What if a CB on another team gets hurt in training camp? Wouldn't the Cowboys have more leverage to get a higher draft pick at that point?

Dan Graziano
  (12:04 PM)

Of course, but that still doesn't mean they want to trade him. What if one of their CBs got hurt the following week? Jenkins is cheap and good and not going anywhere.

Joe (New Jersey)

This is gonna sound argumentative, but I'm not trying to do that...What does Morris Claiborne have to do to change your mind that it was a bad move by the Cowboys to move up and get him?

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

He would have to become two helpful players instead of just one.

Rockin' Hank (New York)

How much blame for the Giants 32nd ranked rushing attack can be attributed to the fact that they started an undrafted rookie at fullback? Do you think Hynoski was an asset or liability last year, and what kinds of improvements can we expect from him in his second year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

I have said many times that I believe the Giants' poor rushing numbers last year were the fault of their offensive line, not their backs. Hynoski was fine, especially for a rookie. They need to get more push up front, as they did during their playoff run.

curt (Trappe Md)

How long do you figure it will take Snyder and the Redskins to screw up RGIII, i kind of feel bad for him he has no idea what a screwed up organization he will be expected to save?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

Unless I missed something, Snyder's not coaching the quarterbacks this year.

Scott (Giant's Country)

I admit confusion in our previous chats, were the cap penalties a result of dumping players (and their cap hits) or front loading salary numbers (instead of signing bonus numbers) in 2011?

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

The latter.

Will (Philly)

We have all heard how Owen Schmitt was only a marginal lead-blocker, but do you think moving on from him to a rookie in the same offseason that we lost Peters was too much change for the league's best RB, or will Shady keep producing because he's just that good?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

I think McCoy is that good, but the more significant loss for him, from a blocking standpoint, is Jason Peters. The Eagles were a great run-blocking line last year, and Demetress Bell has a lot to do to replace their best lineman.

John (Philly)

Hey Dan, who do you see winning the Eagles' outside linebackers positions?

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

I'm going to say Kendricks and Rolle.

TimVB (Arlington)

Will LeRibeus impress enough in camp to take over a starting job on the interior?

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

My sense is that Lichtensteiger has the job if he's fully healthy, but they can't be sure he is, right?

5Star Underdawg (Yonkers, New York)

If Dallas has another unsuccessful season, meaning "no superbowl appearance" is it time for them to move on without Garrett or Romo, or both?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

So, like, if they go 12-4 and lose the NFC Championship Game in Green Bay by one point to a 14-2 Packers team, they should fire the coach and get rid of the quarterback? Is that what you're asking. Neither one of those guys is in any trouble at all.

Rich (Philly)

Dan, do you think taking away the protection calls from Vick will be an improvement for Vick? Do you think a second year center is up for the task?

Dan Graziano
  (12:13 PM)

Kelce's up for it, no doubt. And yes, I think it's a good idea to get it off of Vick's already crowded plate.

Tim (NFC East Coast)

O Danny Boy,Final NFC East Standings will be Boys, Eagles, Giants, Skins.Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

I'd say that's one of about 12 possibilities.

Mookman31 (DC)

Can Martellus Bennett match Jake Ballard's 2011 production (about all the TE has to do in the NYG offense, apparently)?

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

Tough to see Bennett being the receiving threat Ballard was last year. I think he'll be more of a blocker, which is what he was good at in Dallas. But it's possible Eli can pull another rabbit out of his hat, sure.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

Last year it was late August or early September, which I think is the right time.

5Star Underdawg (Yonkers, New York)

Better season, Andrew Luck or RG3?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

I think Griffin is in a better situation and should have the better 2012.

BKW (MD)

Will you be visiting any/all of the NFC East training camps this summer? If so, when? Excited about one more than the others?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Visited all of them last year, so I would expect and hope to do the same this year. There's always plenty to learn at each. I don't prefer one to any of the others.

Joe (New Jersey)

Actually Dan, there are 24 different possibilities for the NFC East standings. Just saying.

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Yeah, but I'm sure half of them are completely unrealistic.

josht908 (SLC)

If vick gets injured and the eagles miss the playoffs as a result, is Reid gone?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

I don't know the answer to the question of "How bad a season do the Eagles have to have for Reid to be gone?" But I think, if they miss the playoffs again for any reason, it's going to be dicey for him.

Lou (Irving, TX)

Do you see Ramsees Barden stepping up this training camp or should he be labelled a bust and the Giants cut him?

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

Well, I think the answer to the second part of your question lies in the first. He'll have a chance to prove he can handle the job, but if he can't, it might be time to move on. He'll never have a better opportunity than the one he has right now.

Matt (Washington Township, NJ)

Do you think Tim Hightower can remain healthy all season this year? Will Shanny rotate Helu and Royster into the game more often to keep Hightower healthy?

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

I'll tell ya, if I ever get to the point where I can predict injuries, my great-grandchildren will be millionaires. That said, yes, Helu and Royster should get more carries and touches early this season than they did last year when Hightower was healthy. And that's not just about keeping him healthy but about putting all of the RBs in the best possible position to succeed and maximize their strengths.

jr(mp) [via mobile]

i believe the eagles will have a bad season again because they secondary will be a mess

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

There is a lot of pressure on those young safeties, I will grant you that.

Micah (CT)

Which Redskins TE has the better year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

Davis, easily. He's by far the better player right now and will impact the offense in more obvious ways. Their best-case scenario is both guys healthy and contributing, but even in that scenario, Davis should see more targets and catches. He's the one who creates those mismatches against linebackers and defensive backs.

Nathan (DC)

Any chance the Skins show Grossman the door if Kirk Cousins has a good camp?

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

No, I think being three-deep at that position is a good thing. And Grossman knows the offense very well. He'll be useful to have around to help Griffin and Cousins learn it and develop in it. Grossman was, as I have written many times, a very effective quarterback for Washington last year in between interceptions.

Mike (Maryland)

Eli Manning Career: 185 touchdowns 129 picks Troy Aikman career: 165 touchdowns 141 picks. Is he a super bowl away from being considered the better QB?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

It was a legitimate debate as recently as the morning of Jan. 1, was it not? I'd say Romo's a Super Bowl away from at least making it worthy of discussion again.

John (Calais Maine)

I look at the Redskins schedule and see 10-6...If RG3 lives up to the hype. What do you think?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

I think that would be one of the biggest surprises of the year in the NFL. Which of course doesn't in any way mean it can't happen.

Joe (DC)

How many TD's will RG3 rush for this year? How many yards will he throw for and how many INTs?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

Four, 2,871 and 15.

Andy Feid (Flip-a-del-phia)

Everyone says our safeties are going to do us in...isn't this a product of the improvements we have made everywhere else...that the safeties are potentially the only hole/weakness in our defense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

I didn't say they'd do you in. I said there's a lot of pressure on them. Which there is. And yes, on paper, your defense looks as though it should be outstanding.

David (philly)

how far do you believe the eagles will go?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

I think their longest trip is to Arizona.

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

No, I'm joking, of course. I know what you meant. But I just don't see the value of making predictions in May.

Nathan (DC)

Are you surprised the Redskins didn't trade Cooley? 2 good TE's is nice, but they are kind of draft pick deficient right now. Besides, 2 good TE's doesn't automatically make you the Patriots...

Dan Graziano
  (12:30 PM)

His salary would have made him very tough to trade, especially coming off an injury. Those two things are, in fact, why his spot on the Redskins' roster isn't 100 percent safe even now.

Gene (DC)

What's the most dull month as an NFL blogger?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

This one hasn't exactly been action-packed!

Chris Ring (Longboat Key, Florida)

You wrote in your blog that the best case scenario the Redskins have is they will be 9-7 and your worst case 5-11, again. Are the Redskins, even with the off season acquistions simply that bad of a football team or is it the toughness of their schedule that does not appear to be as bad as in years past?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

9-7 would be a four-game improvement. They play in one of the toughest divisions in football and have a rookie quarterback playing behind a still-questionable offensive line. I think 9-7 would be a pretty impressive achievement for the Redskins this year.

Southy (the south)

Dan, Mike from Maryland was comparing Eli to Aikman, not to Romo.

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

Oh, man. Sorry about that. In my defense, it was a really fun Monday barbecue. Anyway, I don't know. Comparing between generations is almost impossible. Manning plays in a more pass-intensive era. Aikman had Hall of Famers around him on offense. Tough to tell at this point. I'd still go Aikman, I think, but I think Eli'd have a strong case.

Cool Hand Mook (DC)

Games of Thrones was underwhelming this past week, given all the hype; could this be why it's such a popular show in this division?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

You must be kidding. I think it's one of the two or three best episodes they've had.

Tim (columbia, md)

How much to you buy into the thought that the lockout was to blame for the rash of injuries last season?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

Do we have the numbers to indicate that there were more injuries last year than usual? I haven't see those.

Nick (Vermont)

The Redskins went from 6-10 to 10-6 just by having Brad Johnson become their starting QB. 9-7 can't be the best case scenario.

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

Well, then you do the post. Seriously, show me the 10 wins.

Caz, The Eryie [via mobile]

If the Cowboys Defense struggles to protect 4th Quarter leads again this year, does Jerry show Rob Ryan the moon door?

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

Possible, yes. If defense is the problem again this year, I could see Ryan being scapegoated. Just don't forget: Jones is giving Garrett a lot of leeway on coaching staff decisions these days, and Garrett likely would have to be the one making the decision.

TimVB (Arlington)

For the record I'd be ecstatic with the Redskins reaching .500 for the first time this decade.

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

Noted, for the record.

Shaggy (Randolph, Vermont)

Will the NFLPA lawsuit do anything about the NFL's salary cap penalty against the Redskins and Cowboys?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Nope. That ship has sailed.

VakAttack (Ocala, FL)

I think Brees makes the most sense, by far, to the Cowboys.1. He's still in what essentially is a dome, where he statistically plays much better football.2. He's one of the 5-6 guys who's an undeniable upgrade over Romo, so Jerry would do it.3. Romo is great, but not quite "top of the heap" which appears to be the price range the Saints are willing to go to.4. Giants are set, Philly makes some sense, too, but Brees is a 7 step drop back QB, not a West Coast, and he's just not as good in the elements. Same deal in Washington, not to mention that they just got a potential rookie stud.I think Dallas makes the most sense for Brees. Not that it would ever happen, but still.

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Yeah, I think the Giants are the only team in the division that would have to even think particularly hard about it.

Shaggy (Randolph, Vermont)

could you please elaborate? I don't quite understand.

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

The only connection the Redskins/Cowboys cap penalty issue has to the collusion charges is that the NFLPA says that's how they found out about the collusion. Their suits is not aimed in any way at making the Cowboys or Redskins whole, and the Cowboys and Redskins have already said they're moving on. This is a totally separate issue.

Mike S (Ocean CIty, MD)

Redskins 10 wins that you asked for: Saints, Rams, Bengals, Vikings, Steelers, Eagles, Cowboys, Giants ( In a row!), Browns and Cowboys!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

All right then. Surely, going 4-2 in the division would help.

JM (NYC)

What are the Cowboys doing at safety? Plugging vets on 1 yr deals til the next D Woodson comes along?

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Now, now. They did draft a guy in the fourth round that no one else had ever heard of. How can you say they're not doing enough?

Tyler (NJ)

THE REDSKINS ARE NOT BEATING THE SAINTS, RAMS, AND STEELERS.UR KIDDING RIGHT

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Wasn't me who said it.

Bryan (Altoona)

If Felix Jones steps up his game, can we see him and Murray sharing the carries this year or is Murray set for getting more carries?

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

Murray's the clear starter if healthy. He showed more in half a season last year than Felix ever has.

josh (rochester)

to be fair dan how many people drafted after the first 2 rounds do casual fans know

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

I really wasn't talking about casual fans, but fair is fair.

Matt (Washington Township, NJ)

What's the most compelling position competition in the 'Skins training camp this summer?

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

I think safety. Very interested to see what emerges from that hodgepodge.

Rhett (New York)

Did you think Todd Bowles will make any drastic changes to the secondary scheme? I know big part of Asomugha's struggles last year stemmed from his inability to adjust to playing zone in the middle of the field so much.

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

I don't know if it has much or anything to do with Bowles, but indications clearly are that the Eagles will change their coverage schemes this year and press much more, with Asante now gone.

5Star Underdawg (Yonkers, New York)

Giants in the Superbowl this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

They were, yes. I was there. Saw it with my own eyes.

Tim (NJ)

Did I miss something? Does anyone really think the Saints will trade Brees?

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

No, it was a hypothetical game we were playing. That's all. May 29 chat, you know.

Caz, The Eryie [via mobile]

Does have a great backup QB help young receivers on the roster bubble develop more quickly? For instance catching Orton instead of McGee

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

Not a crazy theory.

Ryan (NYC)

Are the Giants still in the market for a vet RB like Chester Taylor or Benson, or do they believe someone from Wilson,Ware, and Scott will step up and clearly claim #2 back?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

Hmmm. Really not trying to be sarcastic about this, but can the answer be yes to both?

Gene (DC)

Do you really think anything will "come out" of the skins safety situation? Seems like a stop-gap at best.

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Well, they signed Jackson thinking his old coach (Raheem Morris) could get something out of him, and they have high hopes for Gomes, and Meriweather was once thought of quite highly... I think it's possible that two good starters could "come out" of it.

Evan's Dad (VB, VA)

NFL Spokeman Greg Aiello, "There was no collussion, no agreement....totally unfounded" Say what?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Well, what do you expect him to say?

Thomas (Richmond, VA)

If the Cowboys trade Jenkins could they be looking for players instead of picks? For example could they trade Jenkins for a Center or Safety instead of the assummed picks? Would that reduce the risk of going with 3 good CB's instead of 4?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

Your logic makes some sense, but (a) player-for-player deals are rare and tough to pull off and (b) I really, really, really don't think they're trading him.

Evan's Dad (VB, VA)

OK, fair enough. About the question you just answered prior to mines- I had something to add to it. Doesn't Merriweather have to really, really impress since he's probably facing a suspension for his DUI charge?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

I think it's fair to assume the DUI doesn't help his standing in the eyes of the coaching staff, yes.

Caz, The Eryie [via mobile]

Do you get an advantage in fantasy for knowing the division so well? None of my casual fan buddies even know who Leonard Hankerson is.

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

I did win my league for the first time ever last year, but I don't know how much it had to do with the NFC East. I had Bradshaw for a while but failed to deal him for value before his injury. Traded Nicks in a deal that got me Maurice Jones-Drew, which really helped. Drafted Vick high and stuck with him all year and won anyway. I guess spending big FA bucks on Ryan Torain after his big game and dealing him, Jimmy Graham and Andy Dalton for Matt Ryan, Brandon Marshall and Mendenhall was a pretty big deal. Maybe paying extra attention to Redskins helped me pull that off.

mo (ny)

who's going to be the giants week one MLB

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

I'll guess Blackburn, with one of last year's rookies taking over sometime during the season.

Nolan (Philadelphia)

Any chance Brandon Graham plays like a 1st round pick?

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Of course. If he's healthy, which he hasn't been, why not?

Evan's Dad (VB, VA)

OOOH, good one for you Dan- you picked the Charges last year to win the SB. I think you were the only one among your colleagues to pick them. Do you like them this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Well, again, not making picks in May. Though, given that one, maybe I should.

Nolan (Philadelphia)

Why is there no ESPN Philadelphia?

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

That question's way above my pay grade, Nolan.

Bryan (Altoona)

Which one would you recommend to take your date to: Men in Black III or The Avengers?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

I saw the Avengers with the kids this weekend. Haven't seen MIB3. But I have to say, really enjoyed Avengers.

Steve (Bristol)

Do you see Davis working on his blocking ability a little or will they just keep sending him out to catch passes? Makes it difficult to compare him to Cooley when Cooley is a FAR superior blocker. Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

I agree that they are different players, and I think the Redskins will and should continue to play to each guy's strengths.

Ben (Philly)

Men in Black 3 was decent. Avengers was far better though Steve.

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

I mean, yeah, unless MIB3 has the Incredible Hulk in it, I'd have to think so.

Jon (DC)

I don't really have a question to ask, just a statement to make and hope you agree with. Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

Sure.

Tim (columbia, md)

Let's find out if Dan is a comic book geek. After the Avengers credits rolled, did you know who "that big dude" was or did you have to look him up?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Had to look him up. Not a comic book guy at all, and never was. Fortunately, my 8-year-old has a gigantic "Marvel Encyclopedia," and we were able to figure out who Thanos was.

Joe (Middletown, CT) [via mobile]

Is Osi happy now? I haven't heard much from him in awhile!

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Just wait. Training camp is dark, and full of terrors.

Shawn (Easton, PA)

Did you grow up a Giants Fan or a Jets Fan?

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Nope.

Jason (Ft. Carson, CO)

Avengers...MIBIII, "just a statement"...you suck worse than MM.

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Plain or peanut?

Tyrion (King's Landing)

Those are brave men out there, Dan. Let's go kill them!

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

I'm right behind you. Til next week, folks.
