Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (12:57 PM)

Let's get started. Welcome to my chat.

Dan (Kansas City)

Is Gary Woodland in the tourny this week? What do you think of his chances to get back into the WGR by the end of the year?

Farrell Evans
  (12:58 PM)

Yes, Woodland is in the field this week. As you probably know he's battled injuries some this year. He's stud but the tour is full of guys with his talent. He just needs to get some reps.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

In memory of Payne's Stewart pefect drive down the fairway at Olympic in '98 that ended up in the sand filled divot....what golf rule do you want revised or abolished period? Thanks!

Farrell Evans
  (12:59 PM)

Divots should be treated like ground under repair. Payne would want that.

Alex (Anaheim)

What's the toughest shot in golf?

Farrell Evans
  (1:02 PM)

Before the advent of the hybrid, I would have said the long iron shot. But now I go for the more delicate variety, the 60-75 harder that hard's to dial up because it's not quite a full shot.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What LPGA & PGA Tour Event are on the same golf Course?

Farrell Evans
  (1:03 PM)

There isn't one but incidentally, Mike Whan, the LPGA boss, would like for Augusta National to host a ladies event.

jonathon warriner [via mobile]

Who do you tabor to win the U.S. open?

Farrell Evans
  (1:04 PM)

I like Luke Donald to win the U.S. Open because of his excellent form of his game. But as I wrote on Sunday, it's hard to use his play around the majors as an indicator of how well he'll do. You just never know what Luke is going to show up, at least in the big events.

Paul (NJ)

in 2014, Pinehurst #2 will host both the Mens and Womens Open.

Farrell Evans
  (1:09 PM)

That's correct but it's not a PGA Tour event. That's the USGA. The LPGA could get a boost from the men by sharing venues from time to time.

Chat Police (Bristol, CT)

Farrell, can we please stop the madness which is Chris Fiegler from Latham, NY. The guy asks the same asinine questions in every chat. Anyways sorry the the rant, now onto golf, how do you think Bubba and Dustin Johnson are going to do after their long layoffs?

Farrell Evans
  (1:12 PM)

Thanks Chat Police. Dustin is coming off of an injury. So his game hasn't been sharp for a long time. Bubba hasn't had many competitive rounds, but he's healthy and fresh. I don't expect either one of them to contend on Sunday, but they will both make the cut.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

In our lifetime, do you think Pine Valley will ever open its doors to spectators outside of the Crump Cup for any major and/or tournament?

Farrell Evans
  (1:13 PM)

Nope. That's the whole allure of the club. It's uber-private and they want to keep it that way. I always joke that it's the most famous club that nobody's ever seen.

Scott (Salt Lake City)

When is Tiger's next tourney?

Farrell Evans
  (1:13 PM)

He's playing this week then the U.S. Open.

seth (orlando )

is woods done for good

Farrell Evans
  (1:14 PM)

Will he ever be dominant again? No. Will he ever win two or more events in a season? Yes.

Farrell Evans
  (1:18 PM)

Luke must have a case of the nerves in the majors. How do you win events in the weeks surrounding the majors, but then struggle a bit the week of the major. It's a weird thing. DS. email me your contact info. I have lost them.

Shoshana (Boston)

My theory on the problem with Luke in majors is that he tends to miss greens (100th in GIR this yr), and it's harder to get up and down at some of these places

Farrell Evans
  (1:19 PM)

Shoshana,The low GIR is symptomatic of bad ball striking brought on by nerves.

Seth Mitzel (bismark nd)

who will win the U.S. Open?

Farrell Evans
  (1:20 PM)

Seth,I like Jason Dufner. He'll be fresh going into Olympic after a two week break. He's playing the best golf of his life and the course suits his game.

Shoshana (Boston)

That GIR number is for the year on the PGA Tour, he's never had a good GIR number for the year

Farrell Evans
  (1:21 PM)

Shoshana,GIR is maybe overrated when it comes to analyzing Luke, because he is the best player in the world inside of 100 yards.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

Last ?, B/c of the upcoming changes to tour school, do you think sponsor exemptions for top college players will be non-existent. Is that fair to players like Cantlay and Rodgers who can stripe it as good as any touring pro?

Farrell Evans
  (1:23 PM)

Cantlay has to prove himself on tour under the new rules. It's not fair to the guys who are ready but generally the new rules are supported by stats that show that guys who make it on tour through the Nationwide stay on the big tour longer.

Rusty (Lexington KY)

Going to the Memorial for the 1st this weekend. Best place on the course to catch alot of action?

Farrell Evans
  (1:24 PM)

Let me ask Michael Collins.

Shoshana (Boston)

Luke is definitely the best on tour from 100 and in, Stricker is another one like that (who also hasn't won a major). I just wonder if that profile works better at regular tour stops then majors. Just a theory

Farrell Evans
  (1:27 PM)

Shoshana, I don't know if that explains why he can't win a major or not. I see things not falling into place for him those four weeks. And at the same time, the majors are the biggest events but they aren't any harder to win than the BMW PGA that Donald won last week.

Shoshana (Boston)

BTW since the last person to win two in a row was Tiger, 3 years ago, I am crossing off my list for the US Open whomever wins this week & Memphis :)

Tarik (LA)

Farrell, I cant remember if it was you or not, but a question was asked about the lack of black golfers after Tiger's arrival? You said you wanted to get to the question but didn't have the time, Thoughts?

Farrell Evans
  (1:30 PM)

Tarik,It's hard for anybody to make as a pro golfer. Right now there aren't enough black players in the pipeline for many to make it on tour.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

That's what people keep saying in regards to the stats, but I heard a commentator on a golf show say that the stats are closer to 50%. I don't know which is true though

Farrell Evans
  (1:31 PM)

I think you throw out the stats for the majors. Luke scores high on all the indexes for preparedness for majors, but he hasn't won yet.

Jason (St. Louis)

Now that Anthony Kim has some time off, how much of it do you think he will be spending in Vegas?

Farrell Evans
  (1:32 PM)

Give AK a break. He's taken responsibility for his mistakes. Now he has to have the discipline and humility to fight his way back to being a top player in the game.

Ty (Philly)

The Golf Assoc. of Philadelphia is having its Open Championship at Pine Valley this year on Monday July 23rd

Farrell Evans
  (1:33 PM)

Ty,If that's true, that's great for the field.

Derek (IA)

Do you like Zach Johnson's chances in the US Open. He has been playing well lately. Any other major besides Masters fit Zach's game?

Farrell Evans
  (1:34 PM)

Zach is good anywhere he plays. I wouldn't bet against him at the Open.

Hurricane Jeff (Byesville, OH)

Hey Farrell, it's me, Hurricane. Are there any golfers at the college level that you believe have the potential to be big at the professional level? Hurricane comin' at ya.

Farrell Evans
  (1:35 PM)

Patrick Cantlay from UCLA is one. Practically the whole Alabama golf team is tour ready, according to some of my agent friends.

Shoshana (Boston)

Thanks for the chat and why on earth would you throw out the stats in majors? There might be more pressure but guys don't become good ball strikers or putters just bc they show up to a major. It's always possible they have a hot week though

Farrell Evans
  (1:37 PM)

Shoshana,I think you have the stats as a measuring stick, but there are so many other intangibles that shape those weeks. I mean how do you explain Darren Clarke winning the British Open last year? That was a fluke! But as a good wind player he struck gold for that one week.

Shoshana (Boston)

What does dominant mean? If it means regularly winning more than 2 events in a season, will we see that from anyone?

Farrell Evans
  (1:38 PM)

Dominant is winning 6 or 7 times like we saw from Tiger and Vijay.

Shoshana (Boston)

BTW not saying stats are the end all be all, they are a tool and you have to understand their limitations in order to use them. They are also better in the aggregate etc. But they can be a powerful tool

Farrell Evans
  (1:39 PM)

Absolutely. I mean Luke Donald has solicited through his swing instructor the advice of the Columbia Business school professor who came up with the putts gained stat. So he definitely takes stats very seriously to gauge where he needs to make improvements.

Shoshana (Boston)

Right, anyone at this level is good enough to have a hot week, which is why golf is hard to predict.

Michael (Cincinnati)

Who do you like this week at Jack's place?

Farrell Evans
  (1:42 PM)

Luke Donald.

Max (Overland Park)

Over/Under on the number of times Tiger does something this weekend (throw/kick clubs, curse, short interview, etc) that the media will make a big deal about?

Farrell Evans
  (1:43 PM)

I don't know the over/under but I do know that if Tiger is playing poorly, he'll show some respect for Jack's house.

Ty (Philly)

Farrell - Here is a link to the Golf Assoc of Philly http://www.gapgolf.org/event.asp. They had to add a 4th qualifying location originally started with just 3 locations

Farrell Evans
  (1:44 PM)

Maybe they are trying to open up to the world. I have heard that they have great turtle soup at Pine Valley.

Dave (KC)

Waiting for Tiger to return to the Tiger of old - I know it probably isn't happening - is like waiting for the Royals to make the playoffs. Luckily there is still great golf being played at the tournaments this year.

Farrell Evans
  (1:48 PM)

Dave,I'm glad that you've come to that realization on your own. But I wouldn't put him in the category with the Royals, who were once a very proud franchise.

Michael (Cincinnati)

Watched Rory McIlroy this AM on the range for all of ten minutes. That's all it took to convince me he looks more like a guy who misses his third cut in a row than the world #1.

Farrell Evans
  (1:50 PM)

Michael,Rory is out of sorts and it's hard to understand exactly why. He's having a lot of fun being Rory McIlroy. That might be the problem. Perhaps, he needs to start grinding a bit more, instead of hanging out with his girl playing tennis.

Hurricane Jeff (Byesville, OH)

Hey Farrell, it's me again, Hurricane. Have you ever considered a job as a part-time caddy? I think you would do a splendid job.

Farrell Evans
  (1:51 PM)

I was a horrible caddie in the few Nationwide events I worked about 20 years ago. I dropped a bad in somebody's swing once. It probably cost the guy the cut.

Chat Police (Bristol, CT)

SHUT UP SHOSHANA!!! WHY DONT YOU START YOU OWN CHAT, IF YOU ARE SO SMART

Farrell Evans
  (1:52 PM)

Hey. Ease up on Shoshana. She knows her stuff.

Dan (Harrisburg, PA)

I think you've predicted both Luke Donald AND Jason Dufner to win the US Open this year in this chat? What gives?

Farrell Evans
  (1:53 PM)

Dan,Lol. I can't pick them both. I said that Donald was going to win the Memorial and Dufner would take the US Open. Two different tournaments.

Keith H (Seattle)

Even though he didn't win the tournament, it's impossible to remember the US Open at Olympic without thinking of Payne Stewart. To those of us in our 50s, we miss him tremendously.

Farrell Evans
  (1:54 PM)

I don't know if you read it or not, but I did a story last week with Mike Hicks, Payne's long-time caddie, about that week, particularly that Sunday.

Michael (Cincinnati)

His girl playing tennis has really plumetted from the top of the hill.

Farrell Evans
  (1:55 PM)

It's easy to get caught up with the celebrity. It's addictive. But then you have to win and keep winning until you retire.

Dan (Harrisburg, PA)

People bash Tiger for being too "shut in" or whatever. But perhaps that is the only way to truly dominate golf in this day and age. It seems guys like Rory and Westwood, who love Twitter and whatever else, just don't have the focus to live up to their potential. Any thoughts on that?

Farrell Evans
  (1:58 PM)

Dan,Maybe golf means too much to Tiger and those other guys are trying to lead normal lives. I think you try to find a balance.

Farrell Evans
  (1:59 PM)

Guys, my time is about up. Next week we'll continue our conversation at 1pm eastern. Thanks
