Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (11:30 AM)

Well I'ts good to see y'all again, sorry I missed Monday but I was traveling. Let's have a fun hour!!

Bill (NYC)

How bad would u guys be killing Tiger right now if he withdrew after a 79

Ms. Lane (Sorry South Florida)

Michael: I appreciate your honest and comedic talents, but really, Phil's WD NOT being promoted as BAD, yet Tiger gets crucified for ACL being phony to WD, and then he had to show backup paperwork from a Dr., he did, yet the hate still continues and Phil gets off. TOO BAD PHIL DID BUSINESS PROMOTION IN NY ON TUESDAY AND THAT'S WHY HE'S TIRED. Absolute crap the golf media doesn't crucity him. Michael, I don't care about others WD, but this "godlike" affinity for him cause he signs autographs? I am extremely pissed, and will be at YOU if you try and be politically correct and tell me they are contractors. B.S. Tiger gets crucified for any ailment, etc. Phil has done it this time. Their choir boy just got a free pass, again!

Michael Collins
  (11:32 AM)

First, Ms. Lane, you obviously didn't watch the video blog Harig and I did last night cause I did NOT give him a pass. So please all of you that say, "you guys" stop it because I am attacking him for WD'ing the way he did especially when A guy who's had TWO heart transplants seems to not be too tired to play.

Michael Collins
  (11:35 AM)

And seeing as Tiger has never WD'd for "fatigue" reasons mental or physical, I'll say this. If he ever pulled out of an event because he was mentally tired he would get KILLED by the media, but you all also have to remember that Tiger brings MUCH higher ratings than Phil EVER has which would drive the media even more. It's just the way it is. You don't have to like the truth but you better accept it cause it ain't changing.

Ms. Lane (Soggy South Florida)

*****My location is SOGGY S.Fl, not Sorry, although I am SORRY I live here. LOL Stay dry Mike.

Ms. Lane (Soggy S. Florida)

Mike, does this mean you have to work an addt' 2 hours due to rain delay? What time will the last tee time be now? Will get too dark to continue. If so, start even earlier tomw A.M.? BYE

Michael Collins
  (11:37 AM)

A two hour rain delay means there backs are gonna be against the wall to finish the second round. Afternoon tee times have 1:50 added to them so it's gonna be close. It's rainy and cool here so don't feel bad.

Greg (Orlando)

Wow, Phil is now a quitter? I guess 'mental fatigue' can set in when counting up so many strokes. Phil should have done the honorable thing and stick it out for Day 2 in order to appease the fans, sponsors, and most especially host Jack Nicklaus. Even for Phil's 'big picture' outlook, couldn't he have at least used Round 2 to work on whatever he needs to work on, especially considering his own assertions that Memorial represents US Open type green speeds & set up? Hey, we've all played through 'hangovers', and sometimes we even 'figure something out' when doing so. These are NOT the actions of a true champion, so then is it true about the rumors of Phil being a phony?

Michael Collins
  (11:40 AM)

Aw Greg you had it til that very last line. Funny that he said he wanted to get some work in with Butch when in the past he'd fly Butch in to work with him at a tournament. I agree it disrespects Jack, even though Phil was being honest. But don't call him a phony. That just makes you look like a hater and a name caller.

Michael Collins
  (11:41 AM)

And I'm playing with a hangover today too and I still showed up for work... haha just kidding.

Adam (Work)

I'm mentally fatigued so I going to WD my question. Thanks for having me! Hope I didn't disappoint my fans, make any alternates mad because I should have WD BEFORE the tourny, or upset the Memorial staff and sponsors. Give me a break Phil! He was getting his butted whooped and couldn't take it like a man. Your thoughts? (Could barely muster up enough energy to ask that!)

Michael Collins
  (11:43 AM)

The thing that stinks is William McGirt was onsite and had asked if I would caddie for him if he got in, so in a sense Phil screwed me too! If you are healthy enough to tee it up, and don't get hurt during play, finish. Mike Weir shot 83 yesterday and he's still here. Bet he's mentally EXHAUSTED too.

Ryan (Minnesota)

In regard to the currently popular Phil WD, I don't have a problem with him removing himself from the tourney, however wouldn't he have known that he was ready before teeing it up? How do the alternates feel when something like this happens? I believe it was 3 players who WD'd yesterday without an "injury" if I was next in line to get in that tournament I would be pretty upset.

Michael Collins
  (11:45 AM)

4 guys WD'd after playing yesterday. That's 4 alternates that would have gotten a chance to tee it up. But we all know even if you're first alternate, that's the way it goes sometimes, there are no hard feelings towards your fellow players because most guys are friends out here

Jerry Anderson (Dallas, Tx)

Lets go easy on Phil, could be side effects from the arthitis medication? He did look fine at the Byron though - maybe two rangers games, Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor wore him out? And then a trip to Italy - I would be mentally exausted, too!

Michael Collins
  (11:48 AM)

Let's not go easy on Phil, you can't have it both ways. I'm mentally exhausted because my arthritis flared up. PUUH-LEASE! He didn't pull out because of injury. So when you say your tired, then deal with the fallout.

Matt (Philly)

I do not really have a problem with Phil's WD but it is Jack's tourney why not just play today and miss the cut. He would have had an early time today and still could have gotten home tonight.

John (Los Angeles)

What do you think of Sepncer Levin as a longshot at the Open? He plays there a lot and may have an advantage in knowing the course.

Michael Collins
  (11:49 AM)

Love the way Spence has been playing this year, just remember, the course he's gonna be on for the US Open is NOTHING like the course he's played in the past. Might actually make it harder cause you have to forget alot of what you knew.

Paul (Austin)

Do you think Kuchar or Louis Oous. is a better pick at Olympic?

Michael Collins
  (11:50 AM)

Oostey but only by a fraction

brian p (west deptford nj)

Michael: there have been a lot of guys getting first wins this year. Besides Duffner who is on fire, who you see making a huge charge this year? Also, follow you on twitter and love the commentary.

Michael Collins
  (11:53 AM)

Thanks Brian, I was a bit nervous at first tweeting, ya know didn't wanna get in trouble from the guys and girls with BIG offices but now I'm pretty comfortable. Glad you enjoy. Watch that kid Seun Yul Noh, and I think Ricky Barnes is close to getting his first win soon

Samaon (Knee deep in heather)

We all know Tigr drives the ratings, but what should PGA be doing better to increase viewers of televised events?

Michael Collins
  (11:55 AM)

That's a great question because it's such a delicate balance between showing new guys and showing guys you already know. I want to do more stuff with golfers off the course so you can get to know them and then have a reason to watch and root for a guy.

derek (Iowa)

Face the facts both Tiger and Phil withdrew because they played or were playing terrible and both need to be called out for it.

Michael Collins
  (11:56 AM)

Face the facts, Tiger didn't WD and you are not paying attention1 FAIL

Ms. Lane (Soggy S. Fl again)

Are you on site or comfy indoors?

Michael Collins
  (11:57 AM)

Both, onsite in the media center GUZZLING coffee

Adam (Work)

So I thought most of the leaderboard would drop off today. Now the rain. Is this rain going to keep everything pretty even for everyone? I'm assuming it's going to slow down the greens and keep the long drivers a little shorter without the roll in the fairway.

Michael Collins
  (11:59 AM)

And they are NOT playing "lift, clean, and place" for the second round so it'll make the course a bit longer. But it was so dry here I don't think mud balls will be a problem. Should keep the field bunched

Clark Kent (Original Phone Booth!)

Phil shouldn't have scheduled personal $$$ busines promotion for Tuesday. Should have been practicing at course. Tired, yes. His problem. He should be properly spanked and and acknowledged publicly for for his over-zealousness, and thinking the hard working public would fall for his "mental fatigue". Think Tiger isn't grinning from ear to ear hearing that sorry story? Talk about mental fatigue the last 30 months with the 24/7/365 coverage and nasty media on his mind....nope, TW's one million percent better "mentally" than the man who earns over $50 million annually in endorsements (not on the course earnings).

Michael Collins
  (12:01 PM)

Well that was kinda all over the place, but I don't think Tiger honestly cares what Phil does when he's trying to win a tournament himself.

Adam (Work)

If you were Phil's caddy, what would you have said to him if anything? If it were me, I would be embarrassed and mad that I paid my way to the tourny just to turn around and leave.

Michael Collins
  (12:03 PM)

It comes with the job brother. You have to know and accept that going in. Happened to me on more than one occasion. But I'd rather my guy do that and come back get a top 3 finish than stick it out and suck the next week too cause now it's making me lose even more money.

Mitch (Oak Lawn)

You may not have a hangover Michael, but from the tone of the first few comments from the chatters, you might want to order yourself a few drinks :-)

Michael Collins
  (12:04 PM)

If you're buying.... I can always find some Aleve! haha

DJ (Louisiana)

How do you think tiger will finish this week?

Michael Collins
  (12:04 PM)

Top 20 with a good chance to finish inside the top 10

Adam (Work)

I will say one nice thing about Phil. At least he had the marbles to be honest with everyone as honesty is very rare in most sports these days. Probably because the athletes don't want to deal with the fallout.

Michael Collins
  (12:06 PM)

And that's why at least for me it makes it hard to rip him with full force because I don't want him to stop being honest, but sometimes it's better to just not say anything.

Samaon (Knee deep in heather)

I think wwe all have to remeber we go to work fatigued because we need the money,Phil can go home tired because he has a 7 didgit bank account.Everyone should get over the I work tired all the time 'cause if our bank account looked like Phil's I doubt if we'd care what people think when we decide to skip work.

Michael Collins
  (12:09 PM)

True dat. Even if I won Powerball I'd still keep working here at ESPN cause I love this job... My attitude may change a bit about when and how I work though! ;) But in truth my bosses are pretty cool so not much other than my house and car would change.

Michael Collins
  (12:10 PM)

Just a heads up for y'all, Bob Harig just came in from outside and he is SOAKED! Said it is a full tropical downpour outside.

JR (Chicago)

For real darkhorses, I think Ryan Moore and Robert Rock fit the profiles of guys who could fare well at Olympic. Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (12:10 PM)

I would call them Pitch Black horses.

derek (Iowa)

Speak of Spencer Levin, How many golfers smoke on the course like he does. Don't really see many on TV

Michael Collins
  (12:12 PM)

Not many because they get fined when they get caught on camera. Best example is Angel Cabrerra who quit smoking after winning the Masters and hasn't won since. Not Saying, just saying.

Jimmy Olsen (The Daily Planet)

Phil earns over a mid-high EIGHT digit bank account annually. Just statin' the facts.

Michael Collins
  (12:13 PM)

That is not making me or MY bank account feel better! haha

Paul (Portland, OR)

Hi Michael. Kind-of a different question for you, but any advice on teaching my wife to play golf? I'm not a great golfer myself- never break 100- but she has picked up the swing reasonably well after two driving range lessons, and is making good contact. I tried a little chipping and putting lesson last week (not quite as successful). Obviously a professional lesson eventually if she's serious would be good, but any advice in the meantime?

Michael Collins
  (12:16 PM)

Get her a lesson with a professional ASAP, the longer you work with her the more of a chance things will go bad. If you can watch golf together and talk about what's going on or she sees different swings she can try and mimic that's cool too, but every guy that tries to teach his girl ends up playing alone!

Matt (At work)

Michael, I am mentally fatigued at work. Can I go home for the weekend?

Michael Collins
  (12:16 PM)

I give you permission and you can tell your boss I said so!

tommy (pittsburgh)

michael, just joining in didn't read above, in your opinion, can tiger pull this memorial off with a victory this weekend? wuts his tee time 2day,thanx

Michael Collins
  (12:18 PM)

better late than never homey! Don't know if Tiger can win this week but it'll depend on today and tomorrow. His tee time is now 3 pm but that may be in jeopardy cause of the weather.

Samaon (Knee deep in heather)

Personality sells, even in golf.Should PGA do more to promote guys personalities to get more people interested and hope the product keeps people interested?

Michael Collins
  (12:19 PM)

Absolutely. But you gotta put guys on tv who you've never heard of in order to drive the product but that's dangerous because you could lose viewers trying to do that. If you own a business you gonna take that risk?

Adam (Work)

Do you need a sidekick for the US Open or the British Open? I am GREAT at fetching coffee, holding an umbrella, or telling people to get the hell out of your way!

Michael Collins
  (12:20 PM)

Yes but I can't pay you and you'll have to get your own ticket! LOL

Kranger (Idaho)

One way to look at it is Phil was not going to make the cut,so by playing he was not gonna get paid. How many of us are willing to go to work knowing we are not gonna get paid?

Michael Collins
  (12:22 PM)

yes but do you win at your job? And if you can work an extra couple hours so that the next time you go to work, you'll make a million dollars for the week, you might just stay and put in the extra hours.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Sounds like golfing in the weather you're having down there would be like really being in that infamous scene from Caddyshack.

Michael Collins
  (12:22 PM)

I don't think the heavy stuff's gonna come down for a while yet, you should keep going!

Kranger (Idaho)

Golf needs a bad guy,a guy you watch to hate.

Michael Collins
  (12:24 PM)

Media is trying to make Sabbatini that guy but he does WAY too much for the Wounded Warriors. That's the problem, there really are no BAD guys out here. It's all individual preferences.

Kranger (Idaho)

I have always loved match play, why isn't it more popular?

Michael Collins
  (12:25 PM)

Because the early rounds are usually great and the finals suck. Bad ratings that way, and if tv don't like it, you ain't getting it!

Adam (Work)

Great job on the chat today! Keep up the good work and have a great weekend!

Michael Collins
  (12:25 PM)

thanks man you have a great weekend too.

TO (Chicago)

Huge Phil fan but can't excuse this at all. The worst part to me is he always says he is thankful for what golf has done for him. Well, Jack is a huge part of that. Do you think Jack is not happy about it or do you think he doesn't care much?

Michael Collins
  (12:26 PM)

I'm sure Jack is disappointed but I also believe he understands what Phil is doing trying to get that US Open monkey off his back. Jack of all people would get that the most.

derek (Iowa)

I know Tiger didn't WD, I was talking earlier this year, which other people were talking about. YOU FAIL!!

Michael Collins
  (12:28 PM)

I know Derek, I was just getting you all jacked up. But Tiger has always WD'd because of an injury. Never fatigue.

Lana Lang (The Daily Planet)

If he finishes in the top 5 he'll be my Superman!!! Mike, love your sense of humor!

Michael Collins
  (12:28 PM)

If he finishes top 5 he's gonna be a HUGE favorite going in to the US Open.

Steve (Seattle)

Johnathan Kaye as a bad guy?

Michael Collins
  (12:29 PM)

But he's not a bad guy. Can have a bad boy image every now and then but a good person overall.

Perry White (The Daily Planet)

OMG!!! Adam Scott is tied for the lead!!!Stevie Williams is probably practicing his acceptance speech!

Michael Collins
  (12:30 PM)

It's been so long since we've seen him, he might be a mute now!

Michael Collins
  (12:31 PM)

Another quick hour! Thanks everyone for hanging out with me.If there are any questions I didn't get to and there killing you... email me.ESPNCaddie@gmail.comor hit me up on twitter @ESPNCaddieHave a great weekend! Talk to you soon!MC
